I. LENTEN MESSAGE OF HOLYFATHER FRANCIS 2014

He became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich(cf. 2 Cor 8:9)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,As Lent draws near, I would like to offer some helpful thoughts

on our path of conversion as individuals and as a community. Theseinsights are inspired by the words of Saint Paul: "For you know thegrace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for yoursake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich"(2 Cor8:9). The Apostle was writing to the Christians of Corinth toencourage them to be generous in helping the faithful in Jerusalemwho were in need. What do these words of Saint Paul mean for usChristians today? What does this invitation to poverty, a life ofevangelical poverty, mean for us today?1. Christ's grace

First of all, it shows us how God works. He does not revealhimself cloaked in worldly power and wealth but rather in weaknessand poverty: "though He was rich, yet for your sake he became poor…". Christ, the eternal Son of God, one with the Father in powerand glory, chose to be poor; he came amongst us and drew near toeach of us; he set aside his glory and emptied himself so that hecould be like us in all things (cf. Phil 2:7; Heb 4:15). God's becomingman is a great mystery! But the reason for all this is his love, a lovewhich is grace, generosity, a desire to draw near, a love which doesnot hesitate to offer itself in sacrifice for the beloved. Charity, love,is sharing with the one we love in all things. Love makes us similar,it creates equality, it breaks down walls and eliminates distances.God did this with us. Indeed, Jesus "worked with human hands,thought with a human mind, acted by human choice and loved with ahuman heart. Born of the Virgin Mary, he truly became one of us,like us in all things except sin." (Gaudium et Spes, 22).

By making himself poor, Jesus did not seek poverty for itsown sake but, as Saint Paul says "that by his poverty you mightbecome rich". This is no mere play on words or a catch phrase.Rather, it sums up God's logic, the logic of love, the logic of theincarnation and the cross. God did not let our salvation drop down

from heaven, like someone who gives alms from their abundanceout of a sense of altruism and piety. Christ's love is different! WhenJesus stepped into the waters of the Jordan and was baptized byJohn the Baptist, he did so not because he was in need of repen-tance, or conversion; he did it to be among people who need forgive-ness, among us sinners, and to take upon himself the burden of oursins. In this way he chose to comfort us, to save us, to free us fromour misery. It is striking that the Apostle states that we were setfree, not by Christ's riches but by his poverty. Yet Saint Paul is wellaware of the "the unsearchable riches of Christ" (Eph 3:8), that he is"heir of all things" (Heb 1:2).

So what is this poverty by which Christ frees us and enrichesus? It is his way of loving us, his way of being our neighbour, just asthe Good Samaritan was neighbour to the man left half dead by theside of the road (cf. Lk 10:25ff). What gives us true freedom, truesalvation and true happiness is the compassion, tenderness andsolidarity of his love. Christ's poverty which enriches us is his takingflesh and bearing our weaknesses and sins as an expression of God'sinfinite mercy to us. Christ's poverty is the greatest treasure of all:Jesus' wealth is that of his boundless confidence in God the Father,his constant trust, his desire always and only to do the Father's willand give glory to him. Jesus is rich in the same way as a child whofeels loved and who loves its parents, without doubting their loveand tenderness for an instant. Jesus' wealth lies in his being the Son;his unique relationship with the Father is the sovereign prerogativeof this Messiah who is poor. When Jesus asks us to take up his"yoke which is easy", he asks us to be enriched by his "povertywhich is rich" and his "richness which is poor", to share his filial andfraternal Spirit, to become sons and daughters in the Son, brothersand sisters in the firstborn brother (cf. Rom 8:29).

It has been said that the only real regret lies in not being asaint (L. Bloy); we could also say that there is only one real kind ofpoverty: not living as children of God and brothers and sisters ofChrist.

2. Our witnessWe might think that this "way" of poverty was Jesus' way,

whereas we who come after him can save the world with the rightkind of human resources. This is not the case. In every time and

place God continues to save mankind and the world through thepoverty of Christ, who makes himself poor in the sacraments, in hisword and in his Church, which is a people of the poor. God's wealthpasses not through our wealth, but invariably and exclusively throughour personal and communal poverty, enlivened by the Spirit of Christ.

In imitation of our Master, we Christians are called toconfront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to makeit our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it. Destitution is notthe same as poverty: destitution is poverty without faith, withoutsupport, without hope. There are three types of destitution: material,moral and spiritual. Material destitution is what is normally calledpoverty, and affects those living in conditions opposed to humandignity: those who lack basic rights and needs such as food, water,hygiene, work and the opportunity to develop and grow culturally. Inresponse to this destitution, the Church offers her help, her diakonia,in meeting these needs and binding these wounds which disfigurethe face of humanity. In the poor and outcast we see Christ's face;by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Our effortsare also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimina-tion and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause ofdestitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they takepriority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our con-sciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity andsharing.

No less a concern is moral destitution, which consists inslavery to vice and sin. How much pain is caused in familiesbecause one of their members - often a young person - is in thrall toalcohol, drugs, gambling or pornography! How many people no longersee meaning in life or prospects for the future, how many have losthope! And how many are plunged into this destitution by unjustsocial conditions, by unemployment, which takes away their dignityas breadwinners, and by lack of equal access to education and healthcare. In such cases, moral destitution can be considered impendingsuicide. This type of destitution, which also causes financial ruin, isinvariably linked to the spiritual destitution which we experience whenwe turn away from God and reject his love. If we think we don'tneed God who reaches out to us through Christ, because we believewe can make do on our own, we are headed for a fall. God alonecan truly save and free us.

The Gospel is the real antidote to spiritual destitution: wher-ever we go, we are called as Christians to proclaim the liberatingnews that forgiveness for sins committed is possible, that God isgreater than our sinfulness, that he freely loves us at all times andthat we were made for communion and eternal life. The Lord asksus to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It isthrilling to experience the joy of spreading this good news, sharingthe treasure entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offeringhope to our brothers and sisters experiencing darkness. It meansfollowing and imitating Jesus, who sought out the poor and sinnersas a shepherd lovingly seeks his lost sheep. In union with Jesus, wecan courageously open up new paths of evangelization and humanpromotion.

Dear brothers and sisters, may this Lenten season find thewhole Church ready to bear witness to all those who live in material,moral and spiritual destitution the Gospel message of the mercifullove of God our Father, who is ready to embrace everyone in Christ.We can do this to the extent that we imitate Christ who becamepoor and enriched us by his poverty. Lent is a fitting time forself-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give upin order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us notforget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this di-mension of penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and doesnot hurt.

May the Holy Spirit, through whom we are "as poor, yetmaking many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything"(2 Cor 6:10), sustain us in our resolutions and increase our concernand responsibility for human destitution, so that we can becomemerciful and act with mercy. In expressing this hope, I likewise praythat each individual member of the faithful and every Church com-munity will undertake a fruitful Lenten journey. I ask all of you topray for me. May the Lord bless you and Our Lady keep you safe.

CBCI XXXI PLENARY ASSEMBLY - FINALSTATEMENT

Renewed Church for a Renewed Society - Responding tothe Call of Vatican II1. We, the 187 member-bishops of the Catholic Bishops' Confer-ence of India (CBCI), came together at the Alphonsian PastoralInstitute, Palai in Kerala, the place sanctified by St. Alphonsa, fromFebruary 5 -12, 2014, for the 31st Plenary Assembly. In continuationof the 30th Plenary Assembly's theme, Role of the Church for aBetter India, the Bishops deliberated, under the guidance of the HolySpirit, on the theme: "Renewed Church for a Renewed Society-Responding to the Call of Vatican II". On the 50th anniversary ofthe Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the CBCI PlenaryAssembly reflected on this theme in the light of the Second VaticanCouncil documents in order to draw inspiration for her future courseof life and ministry. We took into account the reflections of theCatholic Council of India, which studied the same theme at itsDecember 2013 annual meeting in Varanasi.2. We first recalled the Church's self-understanding, enshrined inthe Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, as the pilgrim Peopleof God, a community rooted in a deep experience of the TrinitarianGod in Christ Jesus. Ad Gentes, reminds us that the Church is acommunity with a mission to evangelize, to proclaim the good newsof Jesus to all, a mission entrusted to her by Jesus and the Spirit. TheChurch exercises her mission in a world marked by a tremendousimbalance: a few very rich and the vast majority poor struggling toeke out a living. The Document on the Church in the Modern World,Gaudium et Spes impels the members of the Church to an involve-ment in the struggles of suffering humanity based on the principlesof respect for the human person, solidarity and effective socialdialogue to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. Finally, theCouncil document on the Laity, Apostolicam Actuositatem pointsout that the lay faithful, who form the vast majority in this People ofGod, have a specific role in society - that of penetrating and

perfecting the temporal order in the spirit of the Gospel.3. When we look at our country, we see corruption plaguing everysphere of society. In such a scenario, Church institutions must be anexample of transparency and probity. Another phenomenon is thatof internal migration which, while opening opportunities to people,has torn the cultural and religious moorings that sustained them. Glo-balization too has brought in its wake problems like prolonged work-ing hours which have disrupted family life. We witness the trend tofundamentalism which seeks to dilute the secular character of ournation. Against this trend, we stand by the values upheld by theIndian Constitution and appeal to governments to respect thesevalues.4. The Church in India has tried to live up to the vision of Vatican II.Several people have been led to a deep experience of God throughreading the Word of God, through the traditional practices of pietyand through the Charismatic Movement. In many places SmallChristian Communities, rooted in the Word and Eucharist have beenestablished. "These communities are a sign of vitality within theChurch, an instrument of formation and evangelization, and a solidstarting point for a new society based on a 'civilization of love'"(Redemptoris Missio, 51). The Church has worked for the uplift ofthe downtrodden. She has been appreciated for the way she hasresponded immediately to natural calamities, for her unbiased out-reach to the needy and vulnerable sections of society. Participatorystructures have been established in several regions, dioceses andparishes. The 2010 CBCI Gender Policy has been hailed as a step inthe right direction. Youth have experienced empowerment throughtraining programs and services.5. However, there is still need for improvement. The reflections ofthe Plenary Assembly centred chiefly on seven areas:5.i. Fostering God Experience: What is needed is a deep experienceof the Trinitarian God drawing on the treasures of the Churchespecially the Word and Sacraments. For this, our liturgies have to

be well prepared, participative and meaningful. Hence, we havedecided to initiate a renewal in the celebration of the liturgy so that itbecomes an effective means for Christ-centred God experience.We bishops have to be ourselves Spirit-filled men of God, givingpriority to prayer and to the Word of God, and helping our clergy andlay faithful to become aware of God's presence and activity in theirlives. The God experience will lead to an inner conversion madevisible in the simplicity of our lives, in our attitude of love, compas-sion and forgiveness. Following the example of Pope Francis, wewill live a genuinely simple, humble, welcoming and outgoing lifereaching out to all people. We will so orient the formation of futurepriests and religious that they enter the ministry with an attitude ofhumility, ready to serve the poor and marginalized of society.5.ii. Addressing justice issues: The experience of God will lead us toinvolvement in and solidarity with the marginalized and the exploited,those suffering from disabilities, those living in the peripheries ofeconomic, cultural and social spheres. We will speak out against allforms of injustice meted out to them and we will defend their rights.We listened to the call of Pope Francis urging us to "work toeliminate the structural causes of poverty and to promote theintegral development of the poor." (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 188). Wewant the Church to be truly a Church of the Poor. We reaffirm oursolidarity with the Dalits in India who continue to be oppressed. TheCBCI reiterates its resolve to struggle for equal rights of DalitChristians on par with their counterparts in other religions. We willcontinue the fight against the 1950 Presidential Order, whichunjustly discriminates against Dalit Christians and we demand thatthe Government remove this 64 year injustice. Justice delayed isjustice denied. We also commit ourselves to rooting out all forms ofdiscrimination within the Church and ensuring equal opportunities inleadership roles for Dalit Christians.5.iii. Ensuring for our lay faithful their rightful place: Recognizingthe God-given talents and potentialities of the lay faithful, we will, in

the first place, listen more to their voice. Hence, we commitourselves to establish Pastoral Councils in every diocese. Werealize that formation of the lay faithful is the need of the hour. Tothis end, we commit ourselves, as a priority, to initiate programmesfor lay formation to equip them to play their role in the Church andsociety.5.iv. Stamping out Discrimination against Women. We commitourselves to strive for the equal dignity of and equal opportunitiesfor women, providing especially equal opportunities for the educa-tion of the girl child. We wholeheartedly support the campaign againstfemale foeticide and domestic violence. In the face of increasingsexual abuse and violence in Indian society, we will do all in ourpower to enforce discipline so as to ensure a secure environment inour institutions for women and children.5.v.. Creating a Christian presence in political and public life. Wedepend in a special way on our youth, the future leaders of the Churchand society. As bishops we realize much more needs to be done forthem. We want to embark on intensive programmes for them toenter into the mainstream of public life so as to ensure value-basedpolitics. Hence, we request every region to set up, whereverpossible, training centres to prepare the youth for leadership roles incivic and political life.5.vi. Promoting Dialogue. India is home to a rich variety of ancientcultures and religions. The Church in India has to be a Church indialogue. We urge our lay faithful to engage in the "dialogue of life",mingling with our brothers and sisters of other religious traditions,greeting them on their feast days and being with them in life'svulnerable moments such as sickness and death. Besidesstrengthening the already existing Small Christian Communities, wewill seek to establish Basic Human Communities which would be apowerful means for communal peace and harmony.5.vii. Safeguarding Ecology. The Bishops re-affirm their commit-ment to the protection of nature. We stand for sustainable develop-

ment of peoples and human ecology. The CBCI Plenary Assemblyshares the apprehensions of people living in the Western Ghats andin the areas affected by the 2011 Notification of the Ministry ofEnvironment on the Coastal Regulation Zone. We appeal to the UnionGovernment to protect the civic rights of the inhabitants in areasadversely affected by the proposals of the Madhav Gadgil andKasturirangan Reports. The CBCI also shares the similar concernsof the tribal population in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradeshand Jharkhand fast coming under mining projects.6. The road ahead of us is challenging. But we count on thepresence of the Risen Lord who, through the power of His Spirit,"makes all things new" (Rev. 21:5). All renewal is always the workof the Spirit. We place our efforts at renewing the Church in view ofrenewing society in the hands of Mary, our Mother, the Star ofEvangelization.

Having completed hisstudies at St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminay, Aluve, Kerala, he wasordained Priest by Mar. George Njaralakatt, Bishop of theDiocese of Mandya on 31-12-13 at St. George's Church,Ambayathod. Large number of Priests, Brothers, Sisters, Relatives,well-wishers and Parishners enthralled their heart in praise of Godfor the great gift of the newly ordained Priest. Dear Fr. Thomas, weare indeed proud of you for your YES to God to be a Priest. He isappointed as the Asst. Parish Priest at St. Joseph Church,Chundakkara in the diocese of Mtdy.2. Diaconatea. Bro. Joyson Kizhakkel was conferred Diaconate by Mar George

Njaralakatt on 12-9-13. He is at present doing the pastoralministry at Good Shepherd Forane Church, Ripponpet, ShimogaDt. He will be ordained Priest on 1-5- 2014 at Rajagiri Church,Thalesserry Diocese.

b. Bro.Sunny Koovackal was conferred Diaconate by Mar GeorgeNjaralakatt on 28-11-13. He is now attending few classes atDharmaram College and will be ordained Priest on 28-4-2014 atFatimapuram Church, Kappunthala, Palai Diocese .

c. Bro. Jobish Naripparayil was conferred Diaconate by Mar GeorgeNjaralakatt on 28-11-2013. 3. Report of Pastoral Council MeetingThe Pastoral council meeting was held at Infant Jesus

Cathedral on 25th January 2014. Fr. Thomas Mangalathil led theprayers. Fr. George Alukka, Vicar General welcomed the partici-pants.

the providence of God, thanked all the faithful, clergy and thereligious for their help and support to the diocese through the lastfour years. He emphatically stressed the main thrust of the diocese,which is evangelization through pastoral and missionary work. Fr.Paul Vazhappilly then presented the financial status of the Diocese.The members constituted a team to study the possibility of starting a1. treatment centre in the diocese.4. It was suggested to have the formation of the diocesan seminar-

ians in Karnataka itself to be accustomed with the local lan-guage and cultureA five member committee was constituted to make a detailedstudy of the proposed projects as well as other possibilities ofincome generating means and ways. Fr. Paul Vazhappilly, Fr.Gervasis Mattam, Mr. Johny Kunnel, Mr. Joy Cheeramkuzhyand Mr. Bastin Joseph are the members of the committee. Thiscommittee is requested to present their report and proposalsbefore the next pastoral Council meeting in July2014.

5. Diocesean level Bible Convention.It was suggested to invite Rev Fr. Xavier Khan Vattayil, theDirector of Sehion retreat centre, Thavalam to conduct acharismatic Convention for the spiritual formation of the faithfulin 2014. It was suggested to invite the migrant youth in differentcolleges and nursing schools for the convention.

6. Diocesan day celebration: It was agreed upon to celebrate theDiocesan day on 26th Saturday April 2014. Archbishop MarJacob Thumkuzhy will be the main celebrant for the Holy Massand officiate the programme. Rev. Fr. Joseph Chittoor, the GoldenJubilerian will be honoured on this occasion.Dr. Francis Kulirany proposed the vote of thanks and themeeting was concluded.

4. Priests Seminar:A seminar was held for all the Priests of the Diocese of

Mandya at Infant Jesus Church on 24-1-2014 to delve deeper in toEvangelii Gaudium-the Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis. Theresource person to discover the richness and demands hidden in thisbook was Rev. Fr. Joseph Thondiparambil, Professor of St. Joseph'sPontifical Seminary, Mangalapuza.

Highlighting the possibility of new evangelization in the con-text of Mandya, he said that for a priest pastoral work is important.People see the face of Christ on the face of the Parish Priest. Hislife and mission is to be that of a Missionary, ready to go forward.

The document has an introduction and five chapters. The firstchapter, explains the nature of evangelization and the Church is pre-sented as a mother who is always ready to go forth. The secondchapter, deals with some of the challenges arising from a globalizedculture. The impact of the new economic situations especially uponthe poor are highlighted here. Second part of this chapter gives chal-lenges faced by the Pastors. In the third chapter, Pope calls us as"missionary disciples". The entire faithful are missionary by baptismbecause they have experienced that love of God in Christ Jesus.The fourth chapter is concerning the poor and marginalized. Heteaches that confession of faith implies commitment to the society.Pontiff also speaks about many types of dialogues that are also meansof evangelization. In the fifth chapter, we are exhorted to enter intoa personal encounter with the saving love of Jesus because thatalone would sustain us. In the last section, Mary is presented as amodel of evangelization.

The pastoral workers are invited to say "yes" to the mission-ary spirituality and to the new relationship, which Christ has broughtabout by means of Incarnation. It involves saying "No" to selfish-ness and spiritual sloth, to sterile pessimism to spiritual worldlinessand to warring among ourselves.

5. Inauguration of the New Building of Jyothir VikasaJyothir Vikasa has now a new office cum residence building.

The new building, built with the support from different donoragencies including Caritas India was inaugurated on 29th January2014. The blessing of the new building was jointly done by BishopLumen Monteiro, Chairman, Caritas India and Bishop GeorgeNjaralakkatt of Diocese of Mandya. In the public meeting that fol-lowed, Bishop George Njaralakatt presided. Mr. VenkattaremanaReddy, representing District Commissioner inaugurated the func-tion. Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Kunnath welcomed all present for the func-tion. Bishop Lumen Monteiro, MUDA Commissioner Mr. MathaiK, Rev. Fr. Peter Brank, Director of KROSS, Mr. Jimmy Mathew,Karnataka Caritas Officer,Rev. Fr. Francis Kureekkal, MSTRegional Director, spoke on the occasion. Fathers and Sisters fromMission Stations and institutions, people from different villages andneighbors and staff of Jyothir Vikasa participated. A word ofappreciation and thanks to Rev. Fr. visited Jyothir Vikasa on 29th January 2014. They also visited twovillages, Sangapura under Cheekanahalli Mission Station andChottanahalli under Kalenahalli Mission Station- and interacted withthe SHG members organized by Jyothir Vikasa.7. Priests Gathering at Belthangady:

A combined gathering of the Priests with the Bishops of thethree dioceses: Bhadravati, Bethangady and Mandya was held on26-27 November at Pastoral Centre, Belthangady. After the officialwelcome, all the Priests with their Bishop's introduced themselvesand gave a brief introduction about their dioceses. The next day,Rev. Fr. Mathew Assariparampil of Thalassery Diocese, shared hisexperience with the members and appreciated the Mission spirit ofthe Priests. He said that it is important to have Priests who aredeeply committed and going after the sheep. We have the fire butnot the flame. If the fire is extinguished in the furnace, snakes andscorpions would come. So let us ignite the fire in our hearts. Weneed to reunite ourselves with the people. Priests should meeteveryone and inspire him or her with his life to live a life of theCross.

In the afternoon session, we had an elaborate discussion onKasturirangan report. The session concluded in the evening.

We are grateful to Mar. Lawrence Mukkuzhy, Vicar General,Priests of the Pastoral Centre, all the Priests of the Diocese and thesupporting staff for the great hospitality, love and concern. Ourinteraction with the Priests of the three dioceses has indeed rejuve-nated us to delve deeper into the Priestly call.8. Report of the Finance council meeting

A meeting of the diocesan Finance council was held on 30thOctober 2013 at Infant Jesus church Cathedral, Mysore. Mar GeorgeNjaralakatt, Bishop of the Diocese of Mandya welcomed themembers. Rev.Fr. Paul Vazhappilly, the finance officer presentedthe audit report of the year 2012-13.Points of discussion:Minor seminary formation: The meeting proposed to start a seminary,for the brothers who have completed three years of formation indifferent minor seminaries, for one-year experience in the diocese.

The seminarians who go for College studies also can stay in thisseminary to pursue their studies. As 1.10 kunta of land is insufficientfor a seminary, the members suggested to purchase one more acreof land adjacent to the land procured for the proposed seminary.

The members suggested to start a school at Kalenahalli inorder to find some source of income for the diocese after few years.Another suggestion was to build a shopping complex at Hinkal churchto lease the building for rent due to the accessibility. The memberssuggested convening a pudhuyogam of the cathedral church to dis-cuss the matter. The members suggested for a detailed study of thepossibility of the construction. The President, Mar. GeorgeNjaralakatt thanked the members for their active participation inthe meeting.9. Concluding Ceremony of the Year of Faith & Honouring

of Archbishop Mar George ValiamattamThe concluding ceremony of the Year of Faith and welcome

to Archbishop of Thalassery Mar George Valiyamattam was orga-nized at Infant Jesus Cathedral, Hinkal, Mysore on 10th November2014. Participation of all the families of the diocese added colour tothe functions. The diocese whole hertedly honoured Archbishop MarGeorge Valiyamattam, celebrating his silver jubilee of his EpiscopalOrdination, Golden jubilee of his priestly ordination and 75th birth-day. The whole diocese wished him and prayed for him.

After a grand welcome accorded to Archbishop Mar GeorgeValiamattom, he celebrated the Eucharist with Mar GeorgeNjaralakatt and all the Priests. It was indeed a time of deep faithexperience. The felicitation of Archbishop Mar George Valiamattomand the concluding celebration of the Year of Faith immediately af-ter the Mass was indeed an experience of great joy. The programmebegan with a prayer dance by the young girls of Infant Jesus Cathe-dral. Rev. Fr. George Alukka, Vicar General the diocese, welcomedthe dignitaries and gathering. Rev. Fr. The Commission for Ecumenism and Dialogue of the Catho-lic Diocese of Mandya organised an Inter-Religious Christmas Cel-ebration at Infant Jesus Cathedral Parish Hall in Hinkal on Saturday,14th December. This was part of the efforts of the Commission tobring people of different faiths together on the occasion of the worldcelebrating the joy of Christmas. The meeting, presided by Mar.George Njaralakkat, the Bishop of Mandya, had the presence ofProf. Bhashya Swamiji, Principal, Govt. Maharaja Sanskrit College,Mysore and former Director, Academy of Sanskrit Research,Melukote and Prof. Syed Akheel Ahmed, Dept. of Chemistry, Uni-versity of Mysore. Sharing their thoughts on the occasion the speak-ers reminded the audience about the common approach that variousreligions have when it comes to love and peace. They also urged

people to uphold the humane values of their respective religions,without losing respect or regard for other faiths and its followers.The need and importance of various religious communities comingcloser to preserve the ideals of secularism and ensuring peace andharmony in the society were also stressed upon. The programme,which was attended by the members of various religious communi-ties, ended with presentation of Christmas Carols and inter-faithfellowship. The Managers of the different schools under the umbrella ofEducation Commission in its meeting on 30-1-2014 at Bishop's House,Kalenahalli, Mandya expressed the need of organizing a seminar forthe Teachers in June 2014 to introduce them to the new methodol-ogy of Teaching, techniques to interact with the students in a friendlyway and other basic requirements. The members authorized theSecretary to order the textbooks and Note books for all the schoolscollectively as in the past year after obtaining the requirement fromthe respective schools run by the diocese of Mandya latest by 10thof February. The members have agreed to have common questionpapers for all the schools run by the Diocese for the final examina-tion and the secretary is to monitor the formalities. The membershave suggested nominal increment of the school Fee every year.The Secretary with the core team is requested to visit all the schoolsat the earliest to update he records, accounts and to enhance theschool functioning.

1.ASHAKIRANA: Support Program for the HIV affected.ASHA KIRANA is now a program of Jyothir Vikasa to help the

HIV/AIDS infected and affected people of Mandya and nearby Taluks.More than 350 such people are now supported through referring totreatment Centers, counseling, providing nutritious food support,awareness and training programs, Support Group meetings, educa-tional support to children, linkage to ART centers and hospitals,

availing support from Govt. schemes etc. During the past threemonths, 14 new cases were identified and referred to ART Centerat District Hospital, Mandya. 55 people were referred and broughtto ICTC(Integrated Counseling and Testing Center,Mandya).Support Group Meetings and Nutritious food support:

Over 180 infected people and their families are helped on aregular basis through monthly Support Group meetings conducted atJyothir Vikasa Office. They are formed into five groups and groupmeetings have been conducted in the past months. Support Groupmeetings were conducted in September, October and Novemberand over 85 people participated. Awareness classes on health, nutri-tion, ART treatment, social and family problems faced by theaffected population etc. are conducted. These meetings have alsobeen occasions for the affected to overcome their depression andget social support, counseling and emotional support and to thinkpositively about their life.

Food packets containing nutritious food items like eggs, pulsesand cereals, ragi, oil etc sufficient for one week for an infectedperson were distributed in the meetings. In October, clothes werealso distributed to the needy, which were collected and provided byThomattuchal and Moolankave parishes of Mananthavady Diocese.Mr. Pradeep, coordinator, Vikasana(NGO, Mandya), Mr.Krishnagowda, coordinator, ODP Mysore, gave awareness classesduring these meetings.Monthly Scholarship for 15 children from Govt.

Through the efforts of Jyothir Vikasa, 15 HIV/AIDS infectedand affected children have been referred to CWC (Child WelfareCommittee, Mandya District) and they have been included in theICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) and under thisscheme they are now getting a monthly scholarship of Rs. 650/-Jyothir Vikasa staff Hemanthkumar and Manjula provided technicalassistance for this.HIV affected Children's Meet at Guthalu, Mandya:

On October 26, 2013 HIV affected Children's Meet was or-ganized at Vimala Higher Primary School, Guthalu. 97 children and50 parents participated in the meet. Awareness classes, sports and

games for children, food and clothes distribution, parents' meetingetc. were part of the program. The one day meet was begun with aformal meeting presided over by Fr. Kuriakos Kunnath, Director,Jyothir Vikasa and inaugurated by Mr. Girish, coordinator, KROSS,Bangalore. Mr. Yoganand K.A.S, social welfare officer, Mandya,Mr. Krishnagowda, coordinator ODP, Mysore, Fr. Paul Vazhappilly,chancellor, Mandya Diocese, Sr. Gracy Mathew , H.M, VimalaSchool, Sisters from Vimala Convent, Guthalu participated in themeeting and other programs of the day. The program was spon-sored by the Mathru Sangam of Infant Jesus Cathedral, Hinkal andits representatives also visited the program and the children.Awareness Programs:

HIV/AIDS Awareness programs were conducted in 13 villagesof 5 Panchayats, 3 High Schools, 1 College and 2 Youth Organiza-tions. SHG groups of villages in Halebeedu, Yeliyur, Gummanahalli,Induvalu, and Honaganahalli Grama Panchayats covering more than500 people were given awareness. In three Govt. schools namelyGovt. High School, Hurumaranakasalgere, Govt. High School, Bebi,Honaganahalli, and Govt. High School, Chinakurali , awarenessclasses were conducted during the past months. In Govt. P.U Col-lege, Chinakurali and two youth groups namely Sri Vinayaka GeleyaraBalaga at Gummanahalli and Lorry Drivers and workers Sanga atHonaganahalli also awareness programs were conducted.World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was observed on December 1.DAPCO (Dis-trict Aids Prevention Council) under the Health Department of theGovernmnet organized public rally in Mandya town. HIV affectedpeople under the banner of Jyothir Vikasa also collaborated andparticipated in it. A seminar was also organized at Kalamandir, Mandyain which MLA, Health Dept. officials, Adarsh Jeevan Mandya net-work coordinators etc. participated.

AIDS Day programs were organized in Ragimuddanahalli andMolekoppal villages also. Seminars were conducted in both the placesand Mrs. Manjula and Manjunath, ICTC counselors of ChinakuraliCHC, and Dakshinamurthy, Health Inspector, Mandya were theresource persons.

2.Women Empowerment Program:Jyothir Vikasa has also now become partner of a collabora-

tive project supported by MISEREOR under the monitoring supportof KROSS, Bangalore. Women Empowerment Project now beingimplemented by Jyothir Vikasa will be supported by these agenciesfor 30 months. Ms. Sudhamani MSW is appointed the coordinatorof this project.Capacity building of SHGs:

90 SHGs are now organized under Jyothir Vikasa in 4 Mis-sion Centers: Cheekkanahally, Kalenahalli, Ragimuddanahalli andPandithahalli. They are in 24 villages under 12 Panchayats. 4 Sis-ters and 4 Animators are now helping the SHGs and its members toimprove their capacities, to understand their civic rights, to obtaintheir entitlements, to monitor their savings and credit and micro-finance programs. Regular trainings and classes are arranged in allthese SHGs. Sr. Nancy, Women Empowerment coordinator, KROSS,Bangalore also visited different SHGs in October 2013 and offeredsuggestions for further improvement and action. Through thecapacity building programs and involvement, now 6 people got housesunder the Ashraya Mane Yojane of the Govt., many people havestarted enrolling for job cards under the MNREGA, 6 people gottoilets under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan.Training for Women Leaders

On November 13, 2013, one day training was conducted forwomen SHG leaders at Bishop's House, Kalenahalli in which 60members participated. Bishop Mar. George Njaralakatt inauguratedthe program. Fr. Paul Vazhappilly, Chancelor, spoke to the leaders.Sr. Nancy and Mr. Varghese from KROSS gave training to the lead-ers on Panchayat Raj and good Governance and enlightened themon their rights and duties.3. Other Projects and Programs:

Caritas India is supporting a project for " Improving the healthstandards of villages through right based approach". The projectsupport is for 3 years and many activities for the capacity improve-

In collaboration with San Jose Hospital, Mandya, a HealthCamp was conducted at Elechakkanahalli in October 2013. About300 patients attended the camp and got free check up, counselingand free medicines. A team of 5 doctors, 12 nurses and 4 para-medical staff under the leadership of Sr. Jessa MSJ offered theirservices for the people. Free blood check up by ICTC, Mandya alsowas there. Sr. Grace Anto SH, SHG leaders and Jyothir Vikasastaff organized the program.Health Awareness Seminar by DHO

Health awareness seminar was organized in Kalenahalli vil-lage on 22 Oct. 2013. District Health Officer Dr. Shivanand andteam conducted the program in which awareness on vector bornediseases was given to the people.Staff Trainings

Jyothir Vikasa is giving due importance to staff developmentand training. During the past months staff were sent for differenttraining programs to improve their capacities. Training in Right basedApproach was conducted in Chaithanya Training Center, Shimogaon October 9,10 and 11. 6 staff members from Jyothir Vikasa par-ticipated. Training on Panchayatraj and Good Governance was con-ducted at KROSS, Bangalore on November 4&5 and ILMS (Inter-nal Learning Monitoring System) training was conducted at KROSSon December 9&10 and staff of Jyothir Vikasa participated in thesetrainings.

DDC(Development Dynamics Course) which is an intensive25 day's International course organized by Caritas India. SudhamaniMSW, coordinator, Jyothir Vikasa participated in the program.

4. Commission for Catechetics Teacher's Day and Children's Day was organized on 24th

Nov 2013 with a Holy Eucharistic celebration by Rev. Fr. GeorgeAlukka as the main celebrant on a specially decorated alter with thetheme "Let the Children come to me". Teachers and students, alongwith the parishioners had an experiential participation in the HolyMass. The celebrant stressed upon the importance of Catechismduring the homily by saying that the parents were and are still nowthe first catechists who have to pay great attention to pass on tochildren their faith experience. He also reminded the teachers to bea role model by applying the Word of God in their day-to-day life toproduce fruit.

During the Karosuza prayers, Mrs. Jessy Clement prayed forthe spiritual benefits on children and Miss. Maria Muttath beseechedblessings on teachers. The student representatives from Nursery toClass XII and all the teachers took active participation in theoffertory and the prayers thereafter.After the liturgical celebration, students participated in variousBiblical activities like Quiz, dumb-sharad, identifying the saints andbombing the city etc. The goal of having children's day celebrationwas the Biblical upbringing of the children and to encourage them toreach out to families and friends with God's Word & life-style. Thedirector, Rev. Fr. George Alukka felicitated the teachers andappreciated the organizers of the day. Miss. Renu Sebastian andMiss. Deepika Johnson spoke on the occassion of celebratingteacher's day. Children wished their respective teachers with cards.Prizes were distributed to the winners of various activities.

As mentioned in the Catechism calendar, the term IISummative examination for all classes in our diocese is to beconducted on 16-2-2014. The scholarship examination for class 4 &7 will be on 13-4-2014. The next academic year 2014-15 willcommence on 1-6-2014.Report on Christmas Celebration

Director, Rev. Fr. George Alukka spoke about the importance offestival and appreciated the Teachers: Mrs. Maya Joby, Mrs. Jessyand Mr. Zecharia for organizing such a wonderful and a meaningfulprogramme. As children sang the popular carol Jingle Bell, SantaClause came up dancing and distributing goodies. Children exchangedgifts with their Christmas friends wishing each other peace andharmony - the message of Christmas.

5. Commission for Pious AssociationCherupushpa Mission League

Though we do not have any claim of doing big things we areproud to tell that we have used all the possible chances positively inour activities. The CML could reach out to many poor and thedowntrodden people during the last working year. We were able toovercome the shortage of fund by collecting and selling the oldnewspapers from our well-wishers to use this fund for differentcharitable works. The Mission League under its initiative collectedused dresses and dress materials from the houses and distributedthem among the poor people of our nearby villages.

We also distributed different study materials like notebooks,geometry boxes etc. among the tribal students under the Jyothi VikasaCentre, Honnamanakatte in H.D. Kotta Taluk. It was indeed amission experience for the members. The sum collected from ourfood and ice cream stalls on the Mission Sunday and on the annualfeast day was used to help a poor family in Yelwala.

All these experiences have inspired us to take up biggerresponsibilities and greater initiatives. As part of this, with the helpof the well-wishers we are planning to provide a glass of milk to allthe inmates of the Vimla Terminal Care Centre daily in the comingyear. 8. Commission for YouthAN OVERVIEW OF ICYM ACTIVITIES 2013-2014

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there amI among them”. Truly, the Lord’s presence among the MandyaDiocesan unit of ICYM turned each of our activities into a greatsuccess. Here are the details of the success stories of ICYM, Hinkalduring the past year.

A group of 18 youth of Infant Jesus Cathedral, under theguidance of Fr.Renerse distributed around 1000 notebooks, pencils,bags and an amount of Rs.8000/- to 2 schools in the region namelyJyothir Vikasa Centre, Mandya (a centre for children of HIV infectedparents) and St. Thomas school ,Honnamanakkate. The celebrationof Syro - Malabar Youth Day for the year 2013 with an aim ofattracting more young lives towards ICYM was held under the masterplan of Fr. Renerse and by the resource person of the day,Mr.Sebastian Palamparambil. The God-filled young people of InfantJesus Cathedral participated wholeheartedly in the ‘Month of Rosary’celebrations by leading the prayers on all 10 days of the celebrations.

For the success of our mega fund raising event, all themembers of ICYM had been working day and night for monthstogether. Famous playback singer Mr.Vidhu Pratap hosted the nightalong with a team from the famous comedy reality show ‘Comedystars’. The ICYM’s hard work on the ‘Thattukada’ stall servingtraditional Kerala dishes to the people who had gathered for thefeast of Infant Jesus was a success. Nearly 15 youth from the parishparticipated in the daylong retreat led by Bishop Mar GeorgeNjaralakatt and Fr. Daniel at Teresian College , Mysore.

A Blood donation camp was held at the Cathedral, under ICYM.As many as 50 parishners donated their blood in the church to K.RHospital,Mysore.

2. St. Mary's Parish, HassanThe life journey of the parish is accorded by programs for the

proclamation of faith and self renewal of the faithful. The adventseason witnessed a galaxy of events transmitting the message ofthe birth of the Son of God. On 14th December 2013, Carol singingcompetition along with variety of colourful cultural events wereorganized in the parish, in which seven educational institutions andthe parish team participated. Govt. Nursing College, Hassan baggedthe First prize and the Trophy sponsored by JJ Constructions, Mysore.Second and third trophies were lifted off by Mangala Nursing Collegeand Rajeev Nursing Institute respectively.

From 18 to 20th December, the parishioners conducted Carolvisits to institutions and families. On 22nd December, our parishioners

participated in the Ecumenical Carol Road Show enacting Biblicalplots, music and street dances. It was a collective proclamation andwitnessing of faith by the Christian Community in Hassan.

St. Mary's Catholic Youth Movement visited orphanages anddistributed new as well as used clothes to the needy. The youthstranded in the modern cultural hub were made aware of their dutyof witnessing to the life of faith.

As part of our Parish renewal programme, three full daysannual retreat was conducted for the parishioners from 9th to 11thof January 2014. A team (Fr. Joseph Anthikatte, Bro. RennyNjarakkulam, Sr. Graceline MSMI, Sr. Ushas MSMI and Sr. LillyPaul MSMI) led by Sr. Daffini MSMI, Jordania Retreat Centre,Nedumpuzha preached the Word of God to a gathering of 550 people.

On 19th afternoon, we had a joint meeting of the DiocesanCuria and the Parish Council of St. Mary's Parish, Hassan to chalkout programs of action to be pursued on our journey of faith. Specificpoints, such as, the purchase of land, construction of the Church andpastoral approach to the floating population were discussed.

On 26th January 2014, we had our Community Daycelebration. Rev. Fr. Paul Vazappally celebrated the Mass and brokethe Word of God. Colorful cultural programs were presented bydifferent educational institutions, which were joyfully acclaimed bythe audience. The Community Day celebration culminated with thefellowship meal. Though the faith community is small in number, thewheel of faith revolves to face herculean tasks ahead.
