U8 RocketsWhile most mothers were lounging in bed being pampered by their sons, the U8 Rockets were braving the cold to face the might of St. Bedes. The pre-game rev up by L. Mittelman was just what the team needed. The first quarter was an arm wrestle with both teams giving as good as they got from siren to siren. Importantly, it highlighted just how far the team has come in such a short period of time. Leading the charge were our inspirational captains Gordon and R. Stabey who injected some serious speed and grunt into the game. They were magnificently supported by the Rockets’ midfield brigade made of Weingart, Mymin, Greenberg, Rapoport and L.Raleigh. They kept the ball moving and provided plenty of opportunities. Fortunately, Borowski and Mittelman were in sensational form with both finding the goals and showing plenty of class. C. Rose gave a ripping half time address and just at the right time. The defensive pressure, team work and sublime skills of our backline was simply incredible. Fajnkind, M. Raleigh, Szwider, Kirszbaum, Oliver, C. Stabey, Feiglin, Small and Gerber were inspirational. It was tough stuff, with each player enjoying their moment to shine.Pleasingly for the coaches the team’s relentless pressure and focus on second efforts was on display all day. Incredible efforts by Weinstein, Janover, Rose, Davis and Nowoweiski rounded out a fantastic four quarter performance.

U8 StarsThis week, the Stars returned home for Mother’s Day, and what a present we gave them. For the 2nd time this season the stars managed to keep their opposition to a zero score, what an amazing effort. The rumors are running rife through the competition that playing at Princes Park Oval 4 against the Stars is as tough an assignment as playing Brisbane at the Gabba through 2001-2004. The similarities don’t stop their either, with many comparing the cunning and wisdom of coach Grundy to Leigh Mathews. The most pleasing thing about the performance today though was not the score, but rather the way the kids played. They are taking what they are being taught at training onto the field. Passing the ball around, looking for a team mate, leading, and manning up in defence. All 4 were a focus on Wednesday night and all 4 featured in our game today. Hope that everyone enjoyed the win and from the U8 Stars to all the Mum’s our there, Happy Mothers Day.

U9 RocketsPlaying Ormond away, for the second week running, our opponents got the jump on us in the first quarter. Parents, perhaps we need to have a team curfew for the season, or if you could restrict the kids' intake of take away on the Saturday night, it might assist the Rocket’s starts. One boy was even seen taking a phone call in the warm-up, despite the media ban (the claim of speaking to holidaying parents fell on deaf ears from the coaches). Having said that, once again, we got ourselves back into the game with incredible hunting of the ball, looking up and not blazing to the opposition and inspiring team work and goal kicking, turning the match on its head. We have one week to go of grading and from what we have seen so far, we expect to be more than competitive with whoever we are drawn to play against. Go Rockets!

U9 StarsCaptain my captain! Its not easy travelling to the hostile environments associated with an away game. Cold showers, damp rooms, unfamiliar surroundings. To silence the home crowds and lessen the size of the hurdle, leadership is needed, and boy did the Stars have that in spades today. The leadership team today stared down the Stars and challenged them to deliver for their mothers on mothers day, with aplomb.Yet again, it was the small things that mattered most, as the Stars had to fight for 4 quarters to see off the hard running and sleek moving Sandringham side. The team ethos that ensures all players are brought into the game by their mate, saw great results. Bodies were bruised today and blood shed, but it was for the team, and that suits the Stars perfectly. Their never say die attitude and 4 quarter effort gave the mums the best mothers days gift they could wish for (and their dads ☺). In the after match presser, the coaches echoed the above saying they were pleased with the continued improvement and effort by ALL Stars players and their never say die attitude. It’s been a good start to the season Stars, but let’s not rest now. Lots of work is still to be done. Rest up! Ice the bruises and wipe the blood off those mouths. We are all very proud of you! Have a great week, and don’t forget to remind your mums how much you love them.

U10 RocketsIn a special Mother's day clash, the U10 Rockets took on the Dingley Dingoes at home. With inspirational pre-match words from Natalie Suss (Jordan's mum), the boys were led out by their captains Kave and Slonim. It was clear the U10 Rockets were switched on from the start with everyone playing their role and stepping up when it was their turn to go. Schimmel set the tone getting to every contest and taking the game on with dash. In defence, Rosenberg was desperate all day and Smorgon, Kave & Gelfand through the midfield made sure our forwards saw plenty of the ball. There were some great plays where the Rockets moved the ball by foot and handball down the ground and first gamer Shua showed some promise. Judd and Zohar were determined not to let the ball out of our forward line and Lucas opened the game up beautifully with some runs through the midfield and long kicks into attack. Oliver was dominate in the ruck, grabbing the ball at every chance, allowing Krasnostein, Theo and Levy to launch into attack. Slonim was everywhere in a breakout performance. There was a nice spread of goal kickers with Gelfand, Rosenberg, Slonim, Hyams, Kave and Rose all posting majors. In a fitting tribute to the mums, the boys ran the game out well and played "true 4 quarter footy" and they all celebrated the win with a stirring rendition of the AJAX club song with their mum's joining in the circle. Well done U10 Rockets. That's what team work and effort looks like!

U10 StarsThe AJAX Under 10 Stars played away this week against St Kilda City on the bayside Wattie Watson Oval. The theme for the day was, of course, MUMS - which for us was Man Up when the opposition and Make Space when we had the ball. Luca and Luka were team captains and implored the team at half time to tackle hard, run hard and man up. They also gave a shout out to all the Mothers. It was a tight start to the game with a lot of pressure. JJ provided some spark out of the mid-field, while Jarrad and Yeshaya applied strong pressure on the opposition in the back and forward-lines respectively. It was a tight quarter however St Kilda did capitalise more from their forward entries. In the second quarter we did lift. Josh Beebe and Eden provided a lot of drive out of the mid-field, Archie led by example with strong spoils from the backline and Josh Levy provided a highlight with a running mark and goal to cap off an end-to-end transition by the team. The second half was a bitmixed. On the plus-side, there were definitely a lot of strong individual efforts, including run and tackling by Brad and a nice mark and pass by Ethan Small. The opposition played a strong brand and moved the ball well. We will work on moving the ball faster and tightening up on defence at training this week, and look forward to continuing our strong Princes Park form for our upcoming home game against South Melbourne Districts on Sunday.

U10 SunsThe Suns faced off against St Peter’s at home ready to show their mums how much they have improved their footy. Captains Zac Onas and Dean Banky called for the boys to tackle hard, run hard and to stay on their players. In a tough first quarter, St Peter’s managed to get a few early goals, but the Suns kept trying and eventually were able to get a goal back when Levi Wynne kicked a great goal from a tight angle. The second quarter was a tight affair with the both teams having many chances to score. Dean Banky, Hugo Waisman and Jordan Ritterman worked hard in defence, while in the midfield Zac Onas and Noah Wise lead from the front, sending the ball into the Suns forward line on several occasions. The tackling was fierce and the boys continued to work hard throughout the quarter. After half time the Suns continued their pressure against a very strong opposition. A great team effort starting with the ball coming out of defence to the running Ari Szwarc who pumped the ball into the forward line where Harley Rechtman was able to break through a pack a kick a great goal. Zac Feldman and Guy Cohen worked hard getting plenty of possessions in the midfield, while Alon Noriskin took some big marks in defence. It was another great effort from the whole team, despite facing a very strong opposition they never gave up.

After days of wild weather, Melbourne gave us a perfect day to enjoy the Mother’s Day Round. The Mighty U11 Rockets were up against their old foe, East Malvern, a team that had always been a strong opponent, but you could tell the Rockets were up for the challenge. From the opening bounce, The Mighty U11 Rockets hunted the ball, surging it towards goal with the forwards keep the dangerous space in front of goal open and clear. When the hardworking mids and half forwards win possession, they centre the ball with discipline so our forwards know where to lead and the Rockets are rewarded with multiple scoring opportunities. When the opposition do win the possession and move it forward, our backs are playing beautiful intercept footy. They play disciplined man on man and run off when there is opportunity to help their teammates and create extra numbers around the ball, win the ball and drive it long. This hard-working team continues to play a brand of football that is enjoyed by all. We were once again treated to a rousing rendition of the club song. Go Rockets, Go Ajax

It was the Mother of all games on the Mother of all days as the Ajax mums took centre stage to support their boys. Before the game, Rafi called on the boys to play hard at the ball and keep it clean (because all parents know how hard it is to get those grass stains out of white shorts). At quarter time, Karina rallied the boys to step it up and play tough to the end. The boys heard the call and did their mums proud in an intense contest against their traditional rivals. The Stars supported each other in every contest and they weren’t afraid to get their white away shorts dirty. They kept their brand of footy tough but clean. In a physical game that would test their resilience, each Star made their mother proud.

Mother’s Day 2019 provided us with the opportunity to work out where we are at this year. Playing another undefeated strong side was going to be a great test. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chocolates. Hard to believe that you can lose a game with 2 kicks after the final siren, but it did happen. As apart of giving all the boys opportunity in a variety of positions the coaches continued the policy of moving the entire team around each quarter. This was been very beneficial for the coaches seeing where the boys play their best football but also proved detrimental to our success on the weekend. The Comets came out firing with a great first quarter. Leading the opposition to the ball, some fast ball movement and some great link up football. During the second and 3rd quarters our boys didn’t play with the team first attitude and team rules the coaches have been talking about and trying to implement. Thinking that playing well would just continue to happen a lot of the boys intensity dropped off. Winning the contest, being physically hard and strong at the ball, kicking to a leading player, playing man on man are some of the key points we have been emphasising. Unfortunately, on too many occasions we strayed from these rules and the opposition capitalised. The fourth quarter was a lot more competitive and the boys got back to playing the team rules. We didn’t convert enough of our opportunities and as mentioned above we were pipped at the post.A lot to learn from this loss which will help us through the rest of the year. Looking forward to seeing the response at training and at next Sunday’s game.

Breakfast in bed, homemade cards, a cuddle and kiss and then it was off to McKinnon Reserve in the light rain for a game of football. What more could a mum ask for on Mother’s Day? I’ll tell you what… a committed effort from 22 players that saw individual and team highlights to make every mum proud. The day started with some excitement around Jesse Felbel’s 50th game. He led the team out before his teammates formed a guard of honour for him to rip through his banner which read “Jesse 50 Games WTG”. He then went with the mantra “tails never fails” and kicked to what would be the scoring end. We were fortunate to have Naomi Swart demonstrating the Mother’s Day spirit by running over 5km as boundary umpire. The game started with a number of great individual efforts including the ruck dominance of Hoppe, Swiatlo racking up the possessions, Smolarski dominating in the middle and Owide providing a problem for St Paul’s McKinnon up forward. The highlight however was the team football that kept pumping the ball into our forward line before Smolarski snapped truly for the first goal of his career. The second quarter saw our opponents get some ascendancy despite some really good Jets football. Marabel-Whitburn was great in the ruck with Hoppe playing well as a midfielder alongside Swart and Naphtali. Asher Black started to assert himself on the game. The third quarter continued like the first with the Jets continuing to pump the ball into attack. The boys loved getting around Ollie Goldstein as he took the ball from the pocket, ran toward goal and snapped truly for his first goal for the club. As we continued to dominate around the ball Mini started to make his presence felt, finding a lot of football. Reichenberg and Fink were dominating their wings while Nathan was doing a great job in the ruck. Greenberg and Naphtali started clunking marks, Gaspar was hunting the ball and Swiatlo was having an incredible game which was capped off by a long range snap that sailed through for a goal. Factor and Rubinfeld were excellent off half back and Adam Rubenstein really shinned on the backline. We entered the final quarter 8 points down and with a real chance of singing the song for the first time this year. St Paul’s goaled early in the quarter before Smolarski kicked his second and we were in striking distance. Rubin was excellent on a wing, Cabelli started to find some footy and lay some big tackles, Mini continued his good form and Swart won some crucial contests. Hoppe was showing dash from full back with some scintillating runs. Then came the Freddo moment, as 50 gamer Felbel, took an unbelievable mark - totally out-muscling his opponent. Jesse along with Black and Shaw were providing a number of great contests but just couldn’t break through the strong St Paul’s McKinnon defence. Unfortunately St Paul’s McKinnon managed to kick a couple of late goals seeing us eventually go down 49-29. The other team awarded Adam Rubenstein as the player they thought showed the most tenacity throughout the game.

Oh what a match! History was made when the U12 girls won their first ever match against St Paul’s by 1 point. Led by captains Ruby P and Ruby J, the girls started with much aggression and competitiveness throwing themselves into every contest and tackling very hard. As the opposition had less players it was encouraging to see our girls rotating to help them out with numbers which was much appreciated. The contest was extremely tight and at the last change we were only up by 10 points. We asked the girls to dig in deep and make sure that we get this game over the line and they all responded in the best possible way. All 15 players literally threw their bodies at the ball and with some great kicking, tackling and marking the Jackettes held on for the win! Three weeks in and the improvement of each player is amazing. The girls are playing as a tight team and making everyone who watches and cheers them on proud!

The coaches of the U13 Comets keep trying players in different positions as well as game plan ideas during the grading games, and today we got closer to how we want to line up and play from now on. The team focused on being ready to play from the time they arrived at the ground, and once the game started being accountable and better defensively. The response the team provided was Div 1 quality, as we were aggressive towards each contest, first to the ball, manned up at all times and we got a 4 qtr consistent effort from all the boys. Pressure count (tackles and chase) was up in every quarter, and the standard has been set for the remainder of the season. Well done to Grossy and Paneth for their first games with the Comets this season. A real team effort, as the song was belted out for all to hear. Lets back it up next week!!

What a win and a great response to last week. The boys responded brilliantly to the challenges we set them at the start of the game- 100% effort for 4 quarters and hard two way running. Our midfield set the tone early with Gelbart asserting himself on the game through his tap work and pressure, supported by Segal on the wing and Benzur who showed class and ran hard all day, Rockman who was in and under every pack in his 50th game and Schwarz who lead from the front with an outstanding individual performance, bringing his team mates into the game all day. Our forward line worked well with Pitt leading hard at the ball and Orbach constantly bringing the ball to ground for our small forwards Reuben and Nathan Gomo to swoop in and kick some great crumbing goals. Our defence stayed tight and focused all game lead by Glance, Weiss and Werdiger who each had great games (or halves). We experimented with some positional changes in the last quarter, Nick Gomoshowed he can be an effective backman as well as a great forward and Rabin may have found a new home down back. Special mention also to Strunin who played a great role up forward in the second half and Farkas who showed his class and skill on the wing. As a team we have set the bar high so far, now it's just about putting together consistent performances for the rest f the year, which starts at training on Wednesday nights.

U14 CometsAJAX 7.9 (51) def Ormond 3.4 (22) Goals: Zielinski 2, Becker, Green, Marabel-Whitburn, Nirens, Pike Best: Graham, Green, Gribble, Nathan, Nirens, Pike

The comets had a tuff and grinding win against an always-determined opponent in Ormond on aSunny Mother's day. While the old saying, “an ugly win is better than a good looking loss” was appropriate, it was always going to be an uphill grind due the lack of preparation by the players. Unfortunately we broke some of our key Team Rules & Game Plan rules - on and off the field –COMMUNICATION & PREPERATION. We trust all the players learned a lesson – preparation reflects mindset & game play. Pikey, Gribble and Carter were outstanding and carried the team to the line. Rafi in his first game was impressive and Levy’s dash out of the back line is a great part of his game we want him to persist with. Jake tried hard in the ruck and his 2nd effort’s is the way we want him to play. Dan Nathan was creative & took the game on while Zaro – when he was pushed – showed how hard at the contest he can be. The team has set the expectation over the first 2 weeks of the season (Round 3 was a learning experience) – but the coaches will keep pushing the squad to be the best we can – on & off the ground. Another test of character this week against a team we should beat – but this will only happen if the entire team commits to the plans & rules that have been agreed to. The harder we work the more the rewards!

Today was a really exciting day for our team, as we finally clicked after a couple of disappointing performances. We established our dominance early, which was pleasing after placing a focus on getting out to a fast start. Our command on the game was generated by great discipline throughout our team. Our midfield was sublime, they generated clearance after clearance and once it got inside 50, they locked it in with a wall that was too stubborn to let the ball past all day. Our forward line saw multiple goal kickers, with plenty of players putting their hands up as goal scoring threats. We will now have to work hard to maintain such focus and discipline, as we face greater challenges in the weeks to come.

On a beautiful Mother’s Day, the girls were pumped and excited to play on the centre stage of the big oval. We came out firing with Dahlia, Perry and Devorah tackling, running for 5 and showing amazing courage. The coaches were vigilant with their “MUMS” strategy - Man Up and Make Space at the half time break. The opposition were unbeatable in the air and with a little help from the umpires pushed forward in attack. Going into the last quarter, the mission was to win on all the 1 percentres and the team never gave up right to the last bell. Yakira, Liv and Mye put in some huge efforts in the last quarter as the girls continued to have fun and learn about strategies to implement for next week.

In front a big home crowd on an uncharacteristically warm late-Autumn Sunday, the boys lined up for their clash with traditional Mother’s Day rivals, St Peters F/C in captain Raphy Light’s 100th game. With last year’s heavy final round defeat to St Peter’s still leaving a bitter taste, the boys were determined to assert their authority on the match from the opening bounce – and didn’t they do just that? Bursting out of the blocks, the Comets had 5 on the scoreboard before conceding a score, adding another 5 to the tally before the quarter time break making it a Mothers’ Day Blitzkreig @ Princes Park. Sheezel was as dominant as ever with a handy bag of 4 first quarter goals, ably assisted by captain and milestone man Raphy who was having a party of his own with 3 sausage rolls to the quarter time break. The running brigade of Spicer, Spitz, Alter, Herman & Schauder continued their domination of the middle through the second and third terms whilst smalls Black, Bentata, Wasbutzki & Siegel were causing plenty of headaches for the opposition up forward. As with every big win, whilst the scoreline talks openly of the potency of the forward line, it only whispers of the performance of the defensive unit, but let there be no mistake; to win a game like they did today requires an exercise in total team discipline and that just what the Comets delivered. Led ably by Lowe, the backline of Rothfield, Potash, Edwards, Kaye & Israel, worked brilliantly to parry St Peter’s attacks and set up several forward thrusts, many resulting in goals. It would have been easy for the boys to take their foot off the peddle with an unassailable 13 goal lead heading into the last quarter –especially without perennial hard-men Green and Chrapot, both of whom succumbed to last quarter injuries sustained unsurprisingly, with team-first, selfless attacks on the football – but listening to the coaches instructions to run out the game and not lose their structure, the boys added another 6 to the tally to win all four quarters and extend their lead over the magical 100 point mark.Having established themselves as a genuine force in Under 15 Division One Football, the challenge to this group is to continue to their improvement knowing that’s exactly what their opposition are doing. A big mazel tov to Raphy Light on 100 games of first rate football and leadership.

For the first time this year, we finally had a full time, which proved lethal. From the very start, our boys were on top. We went out with intent and managed to kick 7 goals in the first quarter to their 0. We mixed things up in terms of positions, which all the boys took on and continued to dominate even when playing out of their natural position. In such a big win it’s hard to pin point stand out performers but honourable mentions to Gabe who kicked 5 goals, Coby who kicked 4, Saul Goldberg who dominated the midfield and even Adam managed to snag himself 2 goals. Overall, great performance by the boys as we look to next week for our top of the table clash! #OneInAllIn

Some blurry eyes were gradually joined by a strong and focused mindset as we discussed some basics expected from the day. These essentials were outlined in context of being competitive & playing with spirit.....team thinking, superior positioning, winning the one on ones, efficiency with ball and composure in & from the heat along with the meaning of RUN were emphasised - plenty to take in and action. After a very good first quarter we were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over for the duration of the match... 4 x very even quarters. Our ability to concentrate on our structures and early positioning combined with our strong run, support and composure was most impressive. Our energy and spirit along with our confidence and trust in each other continues to build. We witnessed an excellent team effort with significant contributions from every player as a result of competing with real passion and spirit on every occasion. Very enjoyable. Our mums should be proud.

On a glorious winter’s day, on an oval the size of the MCG, and against an evenly matched opponent, AJAX started well but could not capitalise on the good work of Slonimsky who was finding heaps of the ball on the wing. Eventually the opposition were able to take a few strong marks in their forward line and goal and AJAX once again found themselves falling behind in the game. The second quarter followed a similar pattern with the girls not as fit as their opponents, and struggling at the back end of the quarter. Kacser however was keeping the team in the game with a great individual quarter of football. In the second half AJAX lifted their intensity, and the game opened up a little. Klooger and Block were able to provide some great run and drive through the midfield and the Jackettes were able to maintain possession in their forward line for large parts of the quarter. The final quarter was a tough tussle, and while the girls fought it out, they were once again short at the final siren. Alford fought hard all day in various positions, and Rothschild was solid in defence for most of the game. It’s clear that if the U16 girls are to match it with their bigger, stronger and mostly older opponents, they need to get fitter quickly, improve their skills and run their future opponents off their feet.
