AKCA Projects Update Committee discussed the need for continuing the current sponsoring project of Advanced Level (A/L) students, considering the recent funding availability from Dr A Thiagarajah Foundation for the same purpose. Committee has decided to gradually phase out sponsoring of A/L students and to take only 15 students (instead of usual 30) from the 2015 A/L batch, which commenced in April 2013. The committee has also decided to increase the monthly payment to Rs. 2,000 (approximately A$15 - A$20) per student. Total amount per student will be approximately A$500.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Development – After School Classes This is aimed at improving Tamil, English and Maths skills of the identified weak students in Karainagar Hindu College. AKCA received a formal request from the Principal, Mrs. Vasugi Thavabalan, to fund this as a one-off project. AKCA has already provided Rs. 36,000 (approximately A$300) for the after school Tamil Language classes. Principal has confirmed that the students are participating with high interest. Committee has resolved to provide Rs. 72,000 (approximately A$600) to coach weak students in English and Mathematics with the requirement that the progress report be received on the outcome of the special coaching sessions. Values from Srimad Bhagavad Gita Chapter 13 – Verses 7 to 11: Values and Knowledge (Jnanam) Humility, absence of pretension (simplicity), not hurting, forbearance, honesty, service to the teacher, cleanliness, steadfastness, mastery over the mind . . . . . (Verse 7)

Absence of sense of ownership, absence of obsession towards son, wife, house and the like, and constant evenness of mind in desirable and undesirable situations . . . . . (Verse 9)

An unswerving devotion to Me (God) with undivided attention, seclusion, non-indulgence in people’s company . . . . . (Verse 10)

Karainagar Hindu College Celebrates 125th Anniversary

On 1st and 2nd of August 2013, Karainagar Hindu College celebrated its 125th anniversary. The AKCA Committee of Management sent a congratulatory message to the Saimbu Malar (rak;G kyu;) in May 2013. Karainagar Hindu Founders Day Speech prepared and delivered by Mr Kandiah Sathasivam is included at pages 7 to 13. It provides a good history of Karainagar going back to late 1800s.

From the Editor This year under the leadership of Mr N Gananadha, AKCA has revived and made significant progress (highlights are on page 4). A milestone achievement of AKCA this year is the successful launch of our website (akca.org.au). Considerable effort has gone in the development by Mr Elyathambi Sachchithanantha. The website has the potential to promote the interest of Karainagarans world over. Contributions to the future editions of the newsletter from children and adults are welcome. This will be a snapshot in the timeline and will be a good memorabilia when looking back after a few decades. Past newsletters are available on our website.

KARAINAGAR MASTER PLAN 2025 - KMP2025 KARAINAGAR THAT WE WANT

PROPOSAL FOR A MASTER PLAN FOR OUR HOMELAND INTRODUCTION We are blessed to have inherited from a great village with rich culture language religion and values. In keeping with our ancestral exploratory acumen Karaiangarans are World over driven by the maxim ‘Yathu Ure Yavarum Kelir’. Besides we cherish our ancestral values and continue to be committed to the development of our ancestral village. To this end we have established Karai Associations in several countries notably in UK, CANADA, SWISS, FRANCE AND AUSTRALIA with the passion to preserve and promote our identity and cultural ethos. STATE OF THE ART It is heartening to note all Karai Associations and individuals’ World over are sponsoring developmental and humanitarian projects to help improve the livelihood and quality of life of our people in our ancestral village still determined and committed to continue to live and enjoy their birthplace. This is indeed a great boon to our village whilst promoting nobility of our Diaspora globally. WAY FORWARD Time has come for us to formulate a master plan for Karainagar in order to facilitate a coordinated and integrated approach to the development of our village. We need to formulate a plan with short term medium term and long term objectives to create the KARAINAGAR THAT WE WANT by 2025. For this purpose we need to mobilise our expert personnel in different fields spread world over. A subcommittee in each sector could be set up to draw up a plan with defined objectives, resource allocation and mobilisation implementation plan with key performance indicators assigning responsibility and time frame. ACTION PLAN The following action plan is suggested for consideration by Karai Associations & Diaspora World over together with Karai Abiviruthi Sabai in Karainagar. 1. A Questionnaire to be administered by Karai Abhiviruthi Sabai in Karainagar to identify what the residents of Karainagar want – assigning weightage to the following sector priorities:

1. WATER. 2 EDUCATION. 3 HEALTH. 4 ROADS. 5 HOUSING. 6 TOURISM. 7 RELIGION. 8 EMPLOYMENT CREATION. 9 CULTURE. 10 FAMILY LIFE AND LIVELIHOOD 11 ANY OTHER TO BE IDENTIFIED

2. A sub Committee to be set up for each sector comprising experts in the above sectors in various countries. Each sub Committee to elect its chairman and Secretary/ Secretariat. 3. ALL KARAI ASSOCIATIONS to identify and nominate personnel to different committees. Each committee will draw up its term of reference with deadlines to be adopted by all Associations. Terms of Reference shall be drawn by each committee as the first task and agreed upon by all participants. Each TOR and task to be assigned to a person or group of persons with deadlines agreed upon assigning responsibility for timely delivery.
