A Parent’s Transition Guide
INtroduction
Going to kindergarten is a huge milestone for students and families. The transition can be emotional and bring about many questions. Students and parents must adjust as new independence is explored.
The transition to school is an important time in your child’s life and education. We seek to create a smooth transition and positive experience for students, families and educators. Early, frequent communication is essential to ensuring a smooth transition.
Transition first begins in preschool. You, the child’s first teacher, along with preschool and transition staff, will work together to accomplish these goals. Working on our transition plans together helps your child navigate the move to kindergarten with more ease and success.
This guide is designed to help you to understand the process of kindergarten transition, provide resources and develop an individual transition plan.

Transition planning begins in preschool. Our preschool staff will send your child home with materials, teaching you and your family all about the transition from preschool to kindergarten. Once materials are signed and returned to preschool, you will be contacted by a transition teacher, who will then work with your child.
Working with your child in the preschool setting will help him or her become familiar and comfortable with the transition teacher, and allow this teacher to understand your child’s strengths and opportunities for growth. The transition teacher will share the information with your child's future kindergarten teacher, who will then implement strategies in their learning to meet your child's needs.
Preparing your Preschooler
for Kindergarten
Before school is out — Plan and schedule Plan a visit to your child’s elementary school before summer break so they know what to expect before school starts.
Schedule an appointment with the school to register in late winter or spring. Early registration will help reduce anxiety for your family.
During the year — Explore your school Play on the school playground and explore the outside area with your child.
Show him or her pictures of the school, their future classroom and teachers.
Praise him or her for being old enough to go to kindergarten.
In the summer — Prepare from homePreparing your child at home for the transition from preschool to kindergarten is important. There are activities you and your child can do together to get ready for kindergarten including:
Writing the alphabet and his or her name
Counting numbers together
Reading and listening to stories without interruptions
Using art tools such as scissors, glue and paint
Cleaning up after playtime
Establishing routines, including homework and meal times
