Page 6: Alamo Area Kids and Family

Even at the age of two, children can be heard muttering the words “dogs” and “cats”. Naturally, children are drawn to animals because they are viewed as loving creatures. The holidays have once again arrived and on the top of many children wish lists is the word “pet”, probably with many heart symbols following it. Now here’s the big question, should or shouldn’t you take on the responsibility of an animal?

The initial argument that plays through parents minds when they are faced with the pet dilemma is whether or not the child will keep up their responsibilities as a pet owner. Realistically, a toddler will not be capable of taking on all the challenges of owning a pet, but with time, they can become the sole provider for their pet. Give your child responsibilities depending on their age.

Ages 0-2 Teach them to play and with and pet animals gently.Ages 2 to 4 Help with feeding (for dogs, cats, fish), learn to pet

gently, learn to brush cats or dogs.Ages 5-10 Give food and water regularly to animal, walk

dogs (with adult supervision), play with animals more regularly, change litter box, clean up after dogs and/or clean cages.

Ages 10+ children are able to take on the full responsibilities of owning a pet.

Pets have extremely positive effects on children. Pets have been shown to help children cope with a variety of disorders such as depression, poor immune function and social anxiety. They help to teach a child empathy and compassion as well as confidence. Children will have a better sense of responsibility when they know they have an animal to take care of. Pets can also help all family members with their stress levels because of their unconditional love and attention.

If dogs or cats are too much of a responsibility for the whole family, consider a guinea pig, parakeet, rabbits, hedgehogs or gerbil because they require less attention and assistance.

Adopting a pet is a long term commitment, but the negatives, such as costs for food, toys and vet care, don’t seem to matter once you’ve made you’re pet an official member of your family.

There may not be snow covering the grounds of our city, but the holiday season has certainly arrived. This year, visit the many festive sights around San Antonio with your family and say yes to holiday cheer.

The South Texas Maize begins this joyous season by opening their doors on September 22. Not only can you journey through their legendary maize, but you can jump onto a hayride, sit warmly by a campfire, pick out the perfect pumpkin to take home and treat yourself to a family picnic. Once the fall wind glides across your face while you’re sitting atop a bale of hay, you’ll know the holiday season has finally arrived.

When the kids begin mentioning Santa’s name and you begin cringing at all the Toy “R” Us ads sprawled across the floor, take

the family away from the material items and visit Devine Acres Farm! Dress warmly and enjoy Devine Acres Farm’s playground, horseshoes, washers and tin bucket golf and petting zoo. To visit with Santa himself, reserve a spot on

December 1, 8th or 15th and have a pancake breakfast with Santa Claus! Remind your children to be on their best behavior for Santa only delivers gifts to the nicest of children. Don’t leave without a pine tree strapped to the back of your car!

Every weekend in November, the Texas Renaissance Festival will be hosting a different themed weekend. The Christmas celebration lasts November 23rd to the 25th. The park will look absolutely magical with holiday décor brightening every corner and beautiful music playing throughout the festival. You might even believe you’ve been transported to the North Pole!

Along with the many holiday festivals, there will be performances throughout the city. The Nutcracker will be playing at the Majestic Theatre November 23 to December 2 and Woodlawn Theatre opens their curtains for a Christmas Story, playing November 23 to December 23. A musical celebration titled Holiday Pops will put on their annual show on December 21 and 22 at the Majestic Theatre, a performance Alamo Area Kids and Family looks forward to every year.

However you decide to spend this holiday, do so with your family and let the magical spirit of this time of year embrace you.

Recipes

CooKinG With KidsPilgrim Hats

Ingredients:2 to 3 hot dogsTube of crescent roll doughBologna (hand-sliced from the deli

counter, for a larger diameter than prepackaged)

Sliced yellow American or Cheddar cheese

Flour

Directions: 1. Heat the oven to 350°. Cut hot dogs into eight 1-inch segments.

Separate the dough along its perforations. On a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper, stand the hot dog segments on end, spaced well apart.

2. Drape a triangle of dough over a segment. Dip a glass in flour, then use it to cut out a circle centered on the hot dog. With floured hands, press the dough around the segment to form a hat shape. Repeat to make the remaining hats. Bake them for 10 to 12 minutes.

3. Cut eight thin strips of bologna and eight small squares of cheese. Arrange them on the cooled hats as shown.

Candied Popcorn

Ingredients: 12 cups popped popcorn1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk1 (3 oz.) package flavored gelatin

Directions: HEAT oven to 300ºF. Line large shallow roasting pan with heavy foil,

extending foil over edges of pan. Butter foil.REMOVE all unpopped popcorn. Pour popcorn into prepared pan. Keep

warm in oven.COMBINE sweetened condensed milk and dry gelatin in medium

saucepan. Heat and stir over low heat until mixture is slightly thickened and bubbly, 4 to 5 minutes.

POUR mixture over popcorn. Stir gently to coat using a long-handled wooden spoon. Bake 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. Carefully turn out onto large piece of lightly buttered foil. Cool. Break into pieces or clusters.

RecipesReeses Krispies

Ingredients: 1 Cup Sugar1 Cup Corn Syrup1 1/3 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter4 1/4 Cup Rice Krispes1 Pinch of Salt4 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, chopped1 Handful Chocolate Chips

Directions: 1. In a large sauce pan over medium heat, melt the sugar, corn syrup,

and peanut butter until smooth and evenly combined.2. Remove from heat.3. Quickly add the salt and cereal and stir to combine thoroughly. Add

the chocolate chips and stir again. Wait about 1 min and add the candy, quickly folding the mixture together so as to not smash up the candy.

4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and drop rounded tablespoons onto the sheet. Let cool and devour!

Nutter Butter Snowmen

Ingredients: Nutter Butter cookiesWhite candy melts (vanilla flavored)M&M candiesOrange Tic-Tacs, cut in halfBlack decorator icing

Directions: 1. Line a baking sheet with wax

paper; set aside.2. In a small to medium bowl, melt

the white candy melts according to the package instructions.3. Working one at a time, dip a Nutter Butter cookie into the melted

coating and flip it over to coat completely (a fork is great for this). Remove and let any excess drip off then place on the wax paper-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining Nutter Butter cookies. Place the baking sheet into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes so the coating can set.

4. Attach a small decorating tip (I used a #2) to a pastry bag and fill with black icing (I just used Wilton decorating icing to make it easy). Dab a small amount on one side of an M&M and place on the coated cookie. Repeat with another just below to make the two “buttons”.

5. Dab another small amount on the bottom of half of a Tic Tac and affix to the center of the top of the cookie for the nose. Again, repeat.

6. Now squeeze out small dots for the eyes and the mouth. Ta-Da! Snowmen!
