DELAWARE

Jennifer Margaret BarkerNewark, DE [email protected] .comInstrument(s): Piano, Oboe, Violin

Described as “a composer of profound sensibility,” Scottish-American Jennifer Margaret Barker has received performances of her compositions on six continents by a wide variety of symphonies, choral ensembles, chamber ensembles, and soloists. Her heart, however, remains with chamber music. At the tender age of seven, chamber music was added to Barker’s musical training: from Leighton to Elgar and Brahms. As a twelve year old pianist, she and her quartet members were labelled “The Un-Giants” when they won the ‘Under 18’ Chamber Music category at the Edinburgh Music Festival. Consequently, a youth spent enveloped in piano trios and piano quartets has left a lasting impression on her compositional style and output.

How are jazz careers made? Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music. For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. Simultaneously an award-winning composer, creative improviser, an artist/businessman, and modern thinker, Mr. Burnett was also an early explorer of the digital music landscape.

MAINE

Kim DiehneltME [email protected]

Maestra Kim Diehnelt has been called “a renaissance woman” for bringing her own brand of beauty and passion to the world through her work as an international conductor and composer. Trained in the United States and Europe, Maestra Diehnelt has been composing works for solo instruments, chamber, orchestral, and choral ensembles since 2011. Her style is best described as a “Nordic Palestrina,” as her works possess a lyrical, vocal quality with an attention to beauty and the sense of an unfolding story. Additionally, she has garnered critical acclaim through recent world premieres in both New York and Chicago.
