A Message from the Training DirectorAs the days begin to get shorter, it is time to review your training needs. The schedule looks a little different this fall because it is reflecting the training that will be offered during the fall por-tion of the training season. A second schedule will be produced in late October/early November which will reflect the spring training schedule. Renewals will be offered to meet the needs of those expiring certifications and skill-based training will closely reflect upcoming work. You are encouraged to regularly check the Alaska Laborers Training School’s website http://aklts.org where you will find information about all training programs and classes, upcoming events and an up-to-date training schedule. Also check out the training school’s Facebook page (Alaska Laborers Training) where photos, information and events are shared. Make sure you have the most current information all of the time.

With two new, state-of-the-art training schools, you will find many things about the training program and classes are changing and improving. AKLTS instructors are in the process of becoming ANSI (American National Standards Institution) certified, through a rigorous training and certification process delivered by LiUNA (Laborers International Union of North America). Both Danny Ruerup and Gabriel Hardy will become ANSI certified instructors this fall! They worked hard to achieve this level of certification and they bring the highest level of standards and “best practices” into the Laborers’ classrooms. This level of certification brings a nationally recognized level of curriculum, credentials and effective instructing methods. It is clear that both management (contractors) and labor (unions) understand the importance of a highly trained workforce and providing training as a benefit. Invest in yourself by signing up for training classes today. Space in many of the skills-based training classes are limited and many classes fill quickly.

I would like to thank all the journey workers for their dedication to the Alaska Laborers Ap-prenticeship program, helping to mentor over 100 apprentices currently in the program. These young people are the future of our workforce and must be trained to produce a quality product every day, making sure that there is pride in every job done, and always meeting the Laborers’ Union standards. This can only be taught in the field by you. It is critical we develop not only a skilled workforce, but strong Union members. Our best applicants for the apprenticeship pro-gram come from you, because you know who has what it takes to become a great Laborer. You are the reason why this program continues to be so successful. Thank you!

Alaska Laborers Training School strives to provide training that is relevant, meets the needs of contractors, and prepares our membership for any task or job they are placed on. We under-stand that Alaska’s Construction Craft Laborers are highly skilled, highly trained in all they do. Alaska Laborers Training School and its staff are dedicated to providing the training you need to excel. If you have suggestions or ideas about training, we would love to hear them.

In Solidarity,

Suzanne McCarthy, Director

Classes for 2017No, you’re not missing a page of the schedule. To reduce schedule changes and unavoidable errors in the training schedule it has been decided to produce two training schedules. Our Spring 2017 training schedule will be issued in December of 2016. This helps us better schedule training in correspondence to what Alaska’s job de-mand is. If any changes are made to the current schedule it will be listed on our website www.aklts.org and on our Facebook page.

Travel PolicyWe know that Alaska’s Laborers are located all over the state and need to obtain training. AKLTS is proud that we are able to supply travel assistance to those who need it to remain highly trained for the construction workforce. In order to provide this much needed service, it is requested that all students register for training classes at least 2 weeks prior to class beginning. All student travel requests must be approved prior to any arrangements being made. Students should fill out their own travel request unless they are out of town and unable to access the forms then the student is encouraged to contact AKLTS directly. Students who travel are asked to plan their training to maximize efficiency (in other words, try to get as much training per travel trip as possible).

1. Students should fill out a travel request form at the same time they apply for training classes. A travel request form should accompany each class application.

2. All student travel must be approved prior to any travel or arrangements being made.

3. If a student who is being assisted with their travel is absent or leaves training for any reason, immediate notification is required. Absences may impact travel assistance.

4. Most travel reimbursements will be done by mail. Specific arrangements must be made with accounting for hand delivered reimbursement checks.

5. All direct reimbursement requests must be accompanied by receipts.

If you can’t make it to class…Not going to be able to make it to class? Give us a call and let us know! We’ll give you the dates of when that class will be given again in the future and let you know how to apply. By contact-ing us about your change of plans gives another Union Member the opportunity to learn a new skill or update their certification. No Call No Shows affect everyone! Communication is everything. Here are four easy ways to communicate with the training school:

1. Call the training school – you can call in the middle of the night even. There is an answering machine!

2. Call the instructor directly – most instructors give out their phone numbers to the classes

3. Email the training school Anchorage School: [email protected] Fairbanks School: [email protected]

4. Facebook – send a private message… we will pass it on to the instructor

Did you know? OSHA has a new Silica StandardSilica is one of the most common, naturally occurring elements on the planet. Materials that contain crystalline silica are not

hazardous unless they are disturbed, gener-ating small-sized particles that can get into your lungs (“respirable crystalline silica”).  For example, blasting, cutting, chipping, drilling and grinding materials that contain silica can

result in silica dust that is hazardous for construction workers and others to breathe.

Are you at risk of being exposed to silica?

The new rule is a comprehensive health standard for construction that minimizes the need for air sampling and

focuses on controlling the hazard. AKLTS will be offering training about the new OSHA Silica standard throughout the coming year. Information will be embedded into existing training, such as concrete-related classes and as stand-alone classes. Learn what you need to know to work safer.
