Issue #4 February 2009 Published by I.E.S. Diego de Siloé—Albacete http://www.diegodesiloe.com
Everyday teachers tell you to recycle
the papers you have already used
and need no more. Maybe it sounds
to you crazy, or boring, or even
useless. But,
have you thought
about the amount
of paper we use
at school? Have
you thought
about the amount
of paper you
waste because you only write a line and then tear it
off your notebooks and throw it away? Remember
that every time you use paper a tree was cut down,
and a factory used chemical products like bleach and
chlorides which are dangerous for the environment.
So, please help trees
and save our unique
planet. Here you can
see a picture taken
from a satellite. This is
the Amazon Rainforest.
All the picture should
be green but now we
can only see a few
areas with trees.
On December 7th 1972, the crew of the spacecraft
Apollo 17 took a photo of
Earth; “the Blue Marble”.
A world we think is
gigantic is diminished to
a child’s marble in outer
space. A beautiful marble
with deep blue oceans,
green and brown earth
and brushstrokes of
swirling, white clouds.
But this marble is in
danger because of us, its inhabitants.
We are slowly destroying our homeland by sending out
poison gases to the atmosphere, cutting down the
forests or killing thousands of animals. It seems we are
not aware that we aren’t the only living beings on
Earth, and that this planet is probably the only one we
can live on. That is why the United Nations General
Assembly declared 2008 the International Year of
Planet Earth.
The International Year of Planet Earth was made to
make politicians and scientists think of ways of
sustainable development, lesser the effects of natural
catastrophes and improve the understanding of the
evolution of life, among other aims. Also, everyone can
take part in this year by helping the planet, starting at
home: walk to nearby places instead of going by car,
having a shower instead of a bath, turning the lights off
in a room when there is no-one in it or recycling the
rubbish. Understanding and getting to know Earth helps
too, for then you know what species are protected or
near extinction, what is the state of the rain forests or
the use of different plants.
But above all, respect every living thing
on Earth and treat them as you would
like to be treated.

This book is a Spanish novel published
anonymously in 1554. It tells about the life of Lázaro of Tormes, since when he was a
child his mother gave him to the blind until
Lázaro got married. He had 6 masters: -The blind, -The clergy, -The squire, -The
friar, -The Pardoner, -The chaplain
The Blind: The blind taught Lázaro that in
this life is very important to be crafty. With
this master Lázaro was always very
hungry; finally Lázaro made the blind crash against a pillar.
The Clergy: The clergy also made Lázaro to be very hungry. One day, somebody who used to make and sell pans and copper and iron boilers came to the house where Lázaro was living and Lázaro got the key of a cabinet where the clergy
kept the bread; when the clergy was in the church Lázaro ate bread but when the clergy learnt about this, he threw Lázaro
away from his house. The Squire: This master was very poor and Lázaro fed him; every time Lázaro was eating in the house the squire said that
this food was the better food and things like that.
The Friar: With this master Lázaro had his first shoes but they only lasted for one week and for this and other reasons
Lázaro left this master. The Pardoner: This master was a preacher who cheated the parishioners selling bulls (bulas)
The Chaplain: With this master he worked selling water and when he saved money to buy decent clothes, after that he left
the chaplain. After that, Lázaro got a real profession: town crier. He was very good at this job; he finally got married.
Besides its importance in the Spanish literature of the Golden Age, Lazarillo de Tormes is credited with
founding a literary genre, the picaresque novel, so called from Spanish pícaro meaning "rogue" or "rascal".

The “Teatro Circo” is in Albacete. This is
one of the oldest theatres in Spain. It started
working in 1887. The “Teatro Circo is one
hundred twenty years old. It was closed in
1985. Before 1999, when it was in ruins,
there weren’t any performances in the
“Teatro Circo”. Then one group called
“Friends of the Theatre” helped
the “Teatro Circo”. This group
gave all the necessary money to renew the theatre. Now you can go to “Teatro Circo”
and see a lot of performances. In Albacete all the people are very happy with the “Teatro
Circo”.
DISCO MUSIC: This style of music arose in the middle of the seventies. In these years disco music was fashionable. Like for example Bee Bees, Boney M, Abba or singers like Donna summer, Gloria Gaynor, etc.
BEE GEES: It’s is a legendary group that was formed by the Gibb brothers.
They had great hits like Stayin ´alive or Night Fever.
SOUL: the Afro-American musicians have produced the popular music but of the planet. It’s a mix of hip-hop, funk
or soul. The soul was born in the decade of the sixties in the USA.
Ray Charles: Ray Charles is blind since he was seven years old. He was the
first Afro-American musician in the establishing who owns its own record
company along with James Brown.
REGGAE: Reggae is the name that receives the Afro-Caribbean musical style It was born in a charity fair in Europe. I have listened to it for the first time. Reggae comes from a subject of the sixties, of toots and the metals called to do the reggae. The most famous singer of that style is Bob Marley.

A study that was carried out in Toronto´s University (Canada) showed that children who assisted to music classes improved their intelligence 3 points
more than others who did not go to any extracurricular activity.
This study was carried out with 144 children chosen at random from those who went to 3 different activities: piano classes, singing classes, drama classes
and those who did not to any classes.
At the beginning of the year, scientists passed them an intelligence test, that was repeated again at the end of the year. The results were that children that went to piano classes or singing classes improved 7 points in intelligence, while
those that went to drama classes or did not go to any classes, obtained 4,5
points more.
This difference comes because music implies practices, rehearsal, memorization and learning new songs. Thanks to that we can increase our
capability of learning other subjects, specially Maths.
This is one of my favourite films, it is about a pirate called Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), the captain of the Black Pearl
and he only loves two things in the world: his boat and himself. He has some friends as Will Turner and Elizabeth
Swam and many enemies as Davy Jones, the damned captain of the
Flying Dutchman, who wants Jack Sparrow´s soul to be in hell. His pet
is the terrible
kraken that it can
sink very big
boats. But a
person wants to
kill Davy Jones to
rescue his father.
He is Will
Turner.
Innocence - Children in Namhsan,
Myanmar by Kimberley Coole. Equip-
ment: Canon EOS 5d
This photograph transmits the life
of the children. It really
represents innocence.
I think that the child suffers
because he appears to be poor, but
still he is smiling. When you see
the picture you think that he has
to live in a very hard world.
I like a lot the brightness of his
eyes. His eyes make me feel more sensitive. When I see the photograph I feel
calm. I hope he will be smiling for all his life.

Palouse Falls Sunset by Kevin McNeal. Equipment: Canon 5D Palouse Falls are in Washington State– USA.
This photo is so wonderful that it even seems an
unreal landscape. It seems impossible that so much
water as we can see in that waterfall can be in a desert
land. On the other hand, the sky looks like a painting
with a great mixture of colors such as orange and blue,
which are very strange to see in the sky. This picture
transmits me a sensation of fear because if you look at
the center of the eddy, it seems that the water is
waiting to catch someone. It also transmits me fury,
the fury of the water that is falling in the waterfall. A
very amazing and strange picture that the
photographer could have only taken in that precise
moment and place having waited for a very long time till getting all the mixture we can see here.
