At Maple Lawn Preschool, your child will be provided opportunities to build their self-esteem, have positive interactions with children of different abilities, ages, and backgrounds, and strengthen their problem solving skills. Garden classes offer story-based curriculum for students ages 3-5. Our new Ready, Set, Go classes will help your child be successful in kindergarten. Both will help children develop their social, language, and motor skills. Call 541-917-7766 for class availability.

ReAdY, Set, Go!Our new, Ready, Set, Go! class is geared for those children who will be starting kindergarten in the fall of 2013, and who will be turning 5 in the fall of 2012. Ready, Set, Go! will focus on those skills needed for a successful kindergarten year: social skills, pre-writing skills, letter recognition, fine motor skills, turn-taking, and direction following.

Fees listed on the left generally reflect a reduced price for Albany residents or, in some cases, a reduced cost for individuals ages 62+. Those who live outside the city limits pay full tuition. You may purchase an Out-of-City user card ($40 individual/$80 family) which allows you to pay in-city rates for one-year. (Note: Classes cosponsored with LBCC reflect a reduced price for those age 62 and older.)

Refunds & Photographs: In the event the department cancels a recreation service, a full refund will be issued. If a participant decides to cancel, a refund/credit will only be given if another participant is found. Give your child an imaginative start with art! These classes are designed to build the skills to express their creativity. They’ll not only have fun, they’ll develop fine motor skills, learn to listen, stay on task, gain spatial organization, and develop patience. Register at Albany Parks and Recreation and let your young Rembrandt experience and learn the fundamentals in a positive, nurturing environment!

YoUNG ReMBRANtS CARtooNING (AGeS 5–12)

Encourage your child’s enthusiasm for art and help develop drawing skills through cartooning! Your child will learn how to draw facial expressions, personification, and story-telling through a series of illustrations each week.

MeSSY FINGeRS (AGeS 11/2–3)Bring your toddler to this fun art class where they’ll discover just how great getting messy can be! With you by their side, they will explore a variety of art-related, sensory activities that will spark their imagination…while your house stays clean! From playdough and painting on easels to finger painting, stamping, and more, you and your little one will create works of art! Please dress to get messy. Pre-registration is required one week prior to the start date.

NAtURe PAPeR VALeNtINe’S (FAMILIeS ANd INdIVIdUALS 10 ANd oLdeR)

Using nature paper ornaments, seeds, and a variety of natural creative decorations, you can create original gifts and cards for your Valentine. Price is per person.

Put your imagination to work as you turn trash into treasure by using tissue paper, leather scraps, colorful product labels, a variety of other papers, and glue to create collages and journals. Step It Up! Break It Down!Get your child off to a healthy start when you have them up and in motion! Dance, movement, and physical skill development classes teach children techniques while increasing their rhythm, poise, coordination, and confidence. Check out our website for full details.

tUMBLING FUN (AGeS 4-6)Somersault, roll, and jump your way to fun in this class that teaches basic tumbling and gymnastic moves along with other floor movements. Children will improve their strength, flexibility, and coordination skills in this fun and active class. Pre-registration is required one week prior to the start date.

LIttLe dANCeRS (AGeS 4-6)Awaken your little dancer to music, ballet, and the use of their feet to create rhythmic patterns and beats with tap. They’ll develop rhythm, basic musicality, and coordination as they improve their motor skills. This class provides a great introduction to two popular forms of dance. Your child will learn ballet steps, tap combinations, use props, and learn terminology while dancing to energizing music. Pre-registration is required one week prior to the start date.

Grades k-2 Where in the Worlds: Discover the fascinating planets and moons that make up our solar system. Your young scientist will learn about the qualities of atmosphere and space with hands on activities including building their own air-powered straw rocket.

Grades 2-4 Move Your Class: Get up and moving while investigating the effects of exercise on the human body. Students will explore the benefits and science behind exercise.

Grades 4-6 squid Dissection: Young biologists will learn proper dissection techniques to explore the inside of a squid. They will discover firsthand where the beak, ink sac, and other essential parts are located.

10:40-11:40 a.m. Workshops:

Grades k-2 kiddie Chemistry: This introduction to basic chemistry will have students exploring mixtures and chemical reactions right before their eyes.

Grades 2-4 Imagineering-Down with Gravity: In this gravity-defying workshop, students are challenged to reduce a falling ball to the slowest speed possible through a maze of obstacles.

Grades 4-6 Energy options: How does a wind turbine generate electricity? Can we use solar panels in Oregon? Students will explore what makes energy renewable as well as energy options.

11:45-12:15 p.m. Lunch: Bring a sack lunch and beverage

Grades k-2 sounds of science: Students will experiment with unusual instruments to discover how waves and vibrations create all kinds of sounds and how these sounds reach our ears.

Grades 2-4 Cowabunga Chemistry: The ultimate in chemistry fun as amazing chemical reactions are discovered.

Grades 4-6 Imagineering-hover, Drop, Fly!: Students will use paper airplanes to explore the engineering design process and examine the effects of changing variables of a design.

1:30-2:30 p.m. AssEMBLY: “rEACT-o-BLAsT” Students help OMSI staff conduct experiments that vividly demonstrate the predictable, and sometimes unpredictable, reactions of matter—including some that may have explosive results!

Easter Egg RollIt’s an old-fashioned egg roll brought

to you by the Albany Parks and Recreation department and the

Albany Downtown Association. Join us for fun and family memories on

Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 10 a.m. in Montieth Riverpark. It’s amazing

what fun you can have with a wooden egg, a paint stick, and duct tape! The top three winners in each age group (3-5, 6-9, and 9-12) will receive a ribbon and everyone will

get a filled Easter egg.

Springtime Crafts

Directly following the Easter Egg Roll, crafts and games will be provided in

the Albany Senior Center for families from 10:30-Noon.

Free of charge.

Scavenger Hunt

The Bunny Trail scavenger hunt begins at 10:30 a.m. Parents and

children together make their way along the bunny trail and collect stamps on their cards from local

businesses. Every child with a completed card will win a prize.

Grab your family and friends and visit a local park, river, or any natural outdoor area and explore what it has to offer! Let’s get up and “Let’s G.O.!” The goal of this national program taking place in April is to bring together intergenerational groups of people to get outside together, to be active, have fun, and connect with nature. This month-long campaign is brought to you by Children & Nature Network and Albany Parks & Recreation. Looking for a great

way to get started? Check out the free activities listed

PetS, PALS, ANd PAthS: APRIL 6 Bring along your four-legged friend as we explore the Takena Landing Trail. This is a soft surface path, that runs along the north side of the Willamette River. The trail starts at the boat landing and heads to the east. As you travel down the trail the sounds of the city gradually give way to the rhythmic sounds of the river. The end of the trail loops back and allows you to return the way you came. Distance: 1.5 miles each way. Dogs must be on leashes. Each dog will receive a goodie bag with an Albany Parks and Recreation bandana. Join us at 10 a.m. as we take a walk on the “wild” side. Please dress for the weather. Pre-registration for this free event is requested but not necessary.

tALKING WAteR GARdeNS toUR: APRIL 13Our first tour of The Talking Water Gardens took place last spring. Now it’s time to take another look to see how the gardens have grown. This project is an engineered wetlands facility designed to reduce water temperature, restore riparian forest and wetlands, promote wildlife habitat, create a living laboratory that brings wetland science to life and create a new natural attraction for Albany-area visitors. Join our guides from 10:30 a.m.-noon and learn how this unique project is progressing. We will board the bus at Carino’s Italian Restaurant for a free trip to Talking Waters Gardens. PRoCeSSIoN oF the SPeCIeS: APRIL 20 Dance, flutter, and prance your way into spring fun in front of the Courthouse at 10 a.m. Join this community celebration of the environment through art, music, and dance as the parade weaves its way through downtown ending at

GeoCAChe deMoNStRAtIoN: APRIL 27Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunt where you and your family will work together to locate hidden containers called geocaches using GPS-enabled devices. Meet at the Senior Center at 10:30 a.m. for an introduction to this fun, free, outdoor activity before heading out in search of caches at 12:30 p.m.. Please bring your GPS-enabled device with you. eNeRGY MedICINe 101 (14+)See, learn, and experience the healing power of Eden Energy Medicine-a profoundly simple and fast fusion of energy techniques from around the world. Dr. Oz, states on Oprah “The next big frontier in medicine is energy medicine”. This amazing energy medicine class is taught by Brittany Legacy, an Eden Energy Medicine Practitioner, trained and certified by the internationally renowned Donna Eden. A supply list will be provided at registration. A free informational meeting with the instructor will be January 23rd from 6:30-7:30pm at the Albany Senior Center.

FUSed GLASS JeWeLRYThey dazzle! They sparkle! They shine! Create earrings, pins, or pendants in this three-hour workshop. Students will have access to a variety of beautiful glass including spectacular dichroic glass. Let your imagination go wild and amaze your friends with your special jewelry.

PRoGReSSIVe SeLF deFeNSeThis skills class teaches effective techniques that can be learned quickly and applied in realistic situations. Students will learn blocks, strikes, control holds, and escapes, along with a variety of combination techniques.

Verbalization while in stressful situation along with tactical thinking will

also be emphasized. A supply list will be provided online and at

registration.

FUSed GLASS VALeNtINe’S SUNCAtCheRCreate an amazing Valentine’s suncatcher that you and your family will cherish for years. Students will have access to a variety of beautiful glass including spectacular dichroic glass. You will have a fun time meeting new friends while creating a Valentines masterpiece!

CReAtING LAStING MeMoRIeSDon’t let those precious memories slip away! This class will teach you all the basics as well as so much more to keep memories lasting forever! Learn to crop photos, add embellishments, mat photos, create pockets, fold out pages, and two ways to secure the books to prevent damage to contents. You will go home with a photo wallet, a photo book, and a handmade wire-bound 4”x4” mini scrapbook. This class will get you prepare to preserve a lifetime of memories! A supply list will be provided online or at registration.

AdULt BASKetBALL ANd VoLLeYBALL LeAGUeSWhat are you doing to beat the winter blues? Now is the time to think about staying active and having fun indoors. Albany Parks and Recreation has some terrific options available to help! Our volleyball leagues are seeing record high registrations this year with a very inexpensive team fee that allows players to stay fit, have fun, and socialize together. Our open gym pickle ball, basketball and volleyball run every Sunday through April. They are open to everyone. Enjoy a true drop-in setting. All equipment is provided, so come by yourself or bring a friend and have the time of your life make friends, stay in shape, and be healthy in mind and body. Join us, have fun, and get good exercise. Express your inner-self in movement with music. Learn basic techniques, basic steps, and four ballroom dances: cha-cha, rumba, jive, and waltz. Dance partner required.

JoURNAL to the SeLF® Discover how to keep a journal for personal growth, creative expression, and life enrichment. The Journal to the Self® workshop is a 12-hour course that will help you learn eighteen writing techniques and discover the writer within. The course is taught by Marcy Keuter Certified Instructor with the Center for Journal Therapy. Based on the best-selling book, Journal to the Self nearly 100,000 people around the globe have learned this easy, effective, empowering model of journal keeping using the Journal to the Self method. The workshop is adaptable to nearly any population, across the life span. It is now taught by a network of certified instructors throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Pacifica. This is a 2 part class. You register for each part separately and they can be taken out of sequence. Registration is required one week prior to the class start date.

PRoGReSSIVe SeLF deFeNSeThis skills class teaches effective techniques that can be learned quickly and applied in realistic situations. Students will learn blocks, strikes, control holds, and escapes, along with a variety of combination techniques. Verbalization while in stressful situation along with tactical thinking will also be emphasized. A supply list will be provided online and at registration. Registration is required one week prior to the class start date.

eNeRGY MedICINe 101See, learn, and experience the healing power of Eden Energy Medicine-a profoundly simple and fast fusion of energy techniques from around the world. Dr. Oz, states on Oprah “The next big frontier in medicine is energy medicine”. This amazing energy medicine class is taught by Brittany Legacy, an Eden Energy Medicine Practitioner, trained and certified by the internationally renowned Donna Eden. VIdeo edItING 101Have you always wanted to make an amazing movie from video taken on camcorders, smartphones, web cameras, or flip cams? This basic Windows video editing class covers how to edit videos using Windows Live Movie Maker and how to transfer videos from your smart phone, web camera, or digital camera to your computer. This class will cover many different aspects of video editing including basic special effects, how to send videos to social network sites and differences in flash memory cards. It will also provide overview of other off the shelf video editing systems for DVD production. Note: Notebook computers, smartphones, and camera equipment should be brought to class. Brittany Legacy is an Eden Energy Medicine practitioner, trained and certified by the internationally renowned Donna Eden. She has a private practice in Eugene Oregon. After being classified as severely disabled, she healed herself using many of the techniques she now teaches. She loves to be in constant motion, on the road exploring in sunny places with her nine year-old daughter. Tax-Aide by Appointment This Year!The AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will again prepare taxes at the Albany Senior Center for people of all ages with low to moderate income. These tax returns are prepared on computers and are electronically-filed at no charge. To help avoid long waits, appointments are required. The volunteers will be preparing taxes at the Albany Senior Center on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and at the Albany Public Library main branch on Tuesday, from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. This will run from February 1 through April 15. Call the Senior Center at 541/917-7760 to make an appointment for either location. Please note if you need help with previous years taxes the volunteers will help you with this during the month of March.

To assist Tax-Aide volunteers in preparing your taxes in the shortest time possible, it would be helpful to summarize your various deductions for medical expenses and charitable contributions prior to your coming in. If your non-cash donations to charitable organizations total more than $500, you will need to provide the date of purchase, date of donation, as well as the cost and description of the items donated. Medical and charitable mileage deductions should be summarized into two periods – January thru June, and July thru December. Also, you must bring last year’s tax return, your 2012 tax documents (1099, W-2, etc.), social security card, photo I.D., and records of any estimated tax payments made during 2012.

Registration: You can register at either the Albany Senior Center (489 NW Water St. /Phone: 541-917-7760) or at the Albany Parks and Recreation Department (333 Broadalbin St. /Phone: 541-917-7777). Registration begins immediately for these tours. Tours are open to any person over the age of 18. Individuals may register in person or by phone. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Discounts: Register by January 14 and receive $1 off per trip.

Deadlines: Registration for each tour closes 3 working days prior to the date of the trip. At times, there will be an early registration deadline based on tickets or reservation requirements. Any early registration deadlines are noted in the trip’s description.

Returns: Return times may vary due to traffic and/or weather conditions. We will do everything possible to return at the scheduled time.

Cancellations: If a participant decides to cancel, a refund will only be given if another participant is found. If a replacement is found and the participant is entitled to a refund, they may choose either a certificate of credit or a refund by check less a $10 processing fee. Refunds of less than $5 will automatically be issued as credit.

Departures: Unless otherwise indicated, all tours will depart from the Senior Center and Carino’s Restaurant parking lot. Carino’s Restaurant is located at 1825 14th Ave SE. Participants are required to park in spaces on the South side of the parking lot (The spaces that backup to the Mall entrance Road off of Geary Street Entrance) The Albany Senior Center is located at 489 Water Ave. NW. Participants are required to park in the outer perimeters of the Senior Center lot. Participants should plan on arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the listed time of departure. All participants must be ready to board the bus at the listed time. We will be unable to delay departure for those not present.
