Aunty Arlene and I have just returned from a week in Cherbourg Qld. The history of Cherbourg is one of Aboriginal people being forcibly removed and brought from all over Queensland and Northern New South Wales to a newly formed government reserve in the early 1900s. People from over 50 different clans were mixed together and not allowed to speak their own languages. Cherbourg is within the Wakka Wakka tribal boundaries.
Aunty and I attended a week long course presented by the Stronger Smarter Institute. The Stronger Smarter Institute is committed to changing the tide of low expectations in Indigenous Education. The focus was on causing change through challenging assumptions about school culture and practices and engaging the indigenous community. The Stronger Smarter Institute was formed by Dr Chris Sarra, the first indigenous Principal at Cherbourg
State School. Over the next few weeks, Aunty and I will be talking to the students, staff and community about what it means to be stronger and smarter at Albert Park Public School. We hope you will be able to come and join us. Unfortunately the P&C Family Portrait fundraiser scheduled for last Sunday was unable to go ahead due to insufficient families signing up. We apologise to those families who were looking forward to participating. We are hoping to book our school in again early next year.
This week in 5/6, while Mrs Smedley was away, we
were very busy. Every day we revised our times
tables through various speed tests. Students
recorded their time throughout the week in attempt
to beat their personal best. There were some very
pleasing results!
This week students explored Human Rights. Together
we formed a definition of Human Rights and
examined newspaper articles to find further examples
in current news.

Later in the week students were involved in
investigating a change. In science we explored the
properties of gelatine
and followed a
procedure to make
hair gel. Students then
compared the
properties of the
product before and
after. A handful of
boys were only too
happy to nominate
themselves to discover
the effect of hair gel on
their own hair.
A very creative and
productive week.
This week students are looking at what causes lightning
and writing an explanation of this amazing phenomenon.
Ask your child what a step leader is?...or what a proton
or electron is?...or what a streamer is? You may be
surprised! We have also viewed super slow motion
footage of a lightning strike and discussed what we saw.
We continue to look at life on the goldfields in the 1800s
and Australia’s gold rush. Pretty hard to believe but the
largest gold nugget weighed a massive 78 kilograms!
All students are participating in Basketball workshops
for the next five
weeks and
developing their
skills. It is a great
chance for us to
make new friends
with the students
from Lismore Public.
Last week we
practiced our
shooting skills and
our lay-up skills as
well as having team
games. We even get
to use the electronic scoreboard!
Home readers need to be exchanged please…at the
moment only one or two students are exchanging
them.
If your child has one day off each fortnight by the
time they get to year 10 at high school they would
have missed out on a year’s learning.

Hi everyone, This week K/1 are continuing to learn about their local environment and they had lots of fun yesterday trying to imagine our playground through a bird’s eyes. As part of our focus on our local environment, during PDHPE this term our unit of work is “Being Safe in Our Environment”. The last two Wednesdays we have looked at “Being Safe at Home” and keeping dangerous things out of reach. We looked at labels on medicines, cleaning products etc. and identifying key words or symbols that tell us that items could be dangerous. Parents might like to reinforce this at home.
