A. AMENDMENT RECORD
B. PURPOSE
This document contains information regarding the transition to parallel runway operations at the
Calgary International Airport (CYYC), beginning 2000Z (1400 MDT), 28 June 2014.
C. Strict Adherance To Procedures – Opening Day and Beyond
An opening day operational template in being introduced upon runway opening and for a period of
time following; to ensure a safe and seamless transition from the familiar crossing runway operation in
Calgary to the new parallel runway operations.
Procedures have been established to ensure controllers and pilots achieve a level of exposure and
familiarity to the new procedures and to ensure a clear understanding of operational requirements.
It is important that the operational template and procedures be followed rigidly during this
implementation and transition period, to ensure a safe transition.
Parallel operations is a significant change from current operation and it is important to maintain the
new procedures throughout the day to ensure everyone becomes familiar with and sharpen required
skill sets for simultaneous independent and dependent operations, as required.

D. Summary Description of Operations
• 28 June 2014, 2000 UTC/1400 MDT - This is the actual opening date/time of CYYC runway
17L/35R.
• Parallel runway operations; 17L&R/35L&R, will be the normal mode of operation at CYYC.
• Runways 35 L&R are the preferred runways.
• If a crosswind runway operation is required, this will include utilization of runways 11/29 and
08/26 exclusively.
• Departures – Ground Sort – Appendix “B”
o Ground Sort program will take effect upon runway opening .
o Departures will be sorted to parallel runways by destination – generally, if eastbound –
utilized the east runway, if westbound – utilize west runway.
o Edmonton (CYEG) bound departures will normally be assigned the west runway (17R/35L)
o Oilsands bound departures will normally be assigned the east runway (17L/35R)
• Arrivals – Runway Assignment by Arrival STAR – Appendix “B”
o BIRKO (Northeast) and EBGAL (Southwest) STARs can expect to be assigned the East
parallel runway (35R/17L)
o ADVOX (Northwest) and IGVEP (Southwest) STARs can expect to be assigned the West
parallel runway (35L/17R)
• ATC Operations – Appendix “A” & “B”
o To facilitate operations with the new runway in Calgary the following ATC control groups
will be split into an East/West configuration.
 Ground/Tower control
 Arrival/Departure control
E. Parallel Operations
• Preferential runways are runway 35 Left and 35 Right.
• Parallel runway operations are the preferred operation and will be maintained as long as wind
speed and direction permit.
• Crossing runways will not be utilized in a parallel operation
EG FIR – Phase 4 Part 2 Runway Opening 28 June, 2014, 2000 UTC [5] Ver 1.1
F. Simultaneous Operations
The parallel Runway Utilization Project team determined that; during daytime operations, both parallel
runways would be utilized in a full simultaneous parallel arrival and parallel departure mode from the
onset of operations. The exception to this is night time operations, as per noise abatement.
Simultaneous operations may be either dependant or independent depending on traffic demand at the
time.
Operator procedural guidance and considerations
• In order to run aircraft to parallel runways efficiently aircraft must be level prior to turning base
leg. 1000’ vertical separation will be maintained with aircraft on the opposite runway until both
aircraft are established on final approach. (localizer)
• During simultaneous operations, aircraft will be expected to descend, without delay, when
cleared lower by ATC, as the aircraft on the “low side” cannot be turned base until they are
level. • Aircraft that are slow to descend may have to be re-sequenced or left to fly the downwind while
aircraft that are behind them and level are turned on to final.
• Pilots are encouraged to call the airport in sight; as soon as possible, as visual approaches will
potentially increase arrival efficiency.
• For the initial trial period, the approach on ATIS will be an ILS or visual approach.
• If an RNAV (GNSS) or RNAV (RNP) approach is preferred, make the request with the arrival
controller on initial contact.
• If flying an RNAV (RNP) straight-in or short transition approach (IMC or visual), expect to be
issued alternate missed approach instructions that include a divergent heading or track away
from the parallel runway.
G. East/West Split Operations – Appendix “A” & “B”
The implementation of the parallel runway brings with it a requirement to split the duties of
ground/tower and terminal controllers based on geographic position of the parallel runways. The
natural split is an east/west split.
Attached in the appendices you will find charts depicting both the airport and terminal, east/west split
operations.

H. Departures
Ground Sort Program – effective 2000Z, 28 June 2014 – Appendix “B”
Ground traffic will be sorted and taxied to parallel runways depending on destination. In general, traffic
with destinations to the west/southwest/northwest, will use the west runway and traffic destined to
the east/southeast/northeast, will utilize the east runway.
Pilots can expect the following runway allocations as per the Ground Sort Program:
a. Aircraft exiting the YC Terminal Control Area clockwise from OTARA to BITGA shall be
assigned Runway 35L or 17R and
b. Aircraft exiting the YC Terminal Control Area clockwise from AVROM to UBVAL shall be
assigned Runway 35R or 17L.
c. Edmonton (CYEG) bound departures will normally be assigned the west runway (17R/35L)
d. Oilsands bound departures will normally be assigned the east runway (17L/35R)
NOTE - MEDEVAC aircraft are exempt from the Ground Sort Program.
Simultaneous Parallel Independent Departures
In order to maintain simultaneous parallel independent departure operations, the required departure
track divergence (15 degrees) will be applied to the new runway (17L/35R), as depicted in the SIDs.
Traffic will be required to turn; as soon as safely possible, to the defined headings in the appropriates
SIDs.
I. Arrivals - Runway Assignment by Arrival STAR – Appendix “B”
Airspace design and arrival routes from departure to STAR arrival waypoint will now establish the
arrival parallel runway.
Generally, arrivals from the east land on the east runway (17L/35R) and arrivals from the west will land
on the west runway (17R/35L).
• BIRKO (Northeast) and EBGAL (Southwest) STARs can expect to be assigned the East parallel
runway (35R/17L)
• ADVOX (Northwest) and IGVEP (Southwest) STARs can expect to be assigned the West
parallel runway (35L/17R)
J. TAXI Routes – Appendix “C”
Attached charts depict taxi route possibilities depending on active parallels.
