Talc reserves here are estimated at around 14.8 M tonnes. The Segal property is not far from the Governeur talc deposits, which were mined onwards from the mid-1870s until the mid- 2000s. These deposits typically contain 30-55% talc and 35-60% tremolite. The talc is particularly suitable for ceramics applications, but can also be used for paint, cosmetics, plastics, rubber, paper and refractories. In 2006/07, the Segal talc property was donated to St Lawrence University and the university authorities then began looking for a mining company to take out a long- term lease on the property. If CMC goes ahead with development of the property, it could be producing 80,000-100,000 tonnes/y of talc here by early 2014. Providing that it meets its commitments on wage and employment levels, Repi will receive a grant of $75,000 over three years from the state’s development fund, One North Carolina Fund.
