ALBURY PUBLIC SCHOOL PROUD Member of the crossing point learning community Week 5 Term 1 28 February, 2018 Last night I attended my first P&C meeting at Albury Public School. It was refreshing to see so many parent (and grandparent) representatives from the school, all eagerly supporting the parent body to work closely with the school. We had some lively discussions as well as looked at some long term plans for 2018. At the meeting I spoke to the development of the school plan and some of the changes that will be taking place at Albury Public School this year as we work to put Albury Public School back to its rightful place as a high performing, value adding school. In order to do this, the three year school plan which will drive the changes, will address the following: The way teachers work collaboratively to plan and program from the syllabus documents where proficiency is the minimum standard; Teachers collaboratively support each other to improve teaching practice and learning opportunities for students; Practices that are detrimental to student learning, such as ability grouping classes and labelling of students, will be replaced with all students being challenged based on their needs at a point in time. This means that assessment will drive the grouping of students which will be fluid and allow students to move to extension or further support depending on their needs with concepts and learning; A renewed focus on the students as learners and personalised learning. Every child should be known and cared for with strong connections with the home; Strengthening the Learning and Support team to address the learning needs of every student in consultation with classroom teachers so that every student is ready for a day of learning when they arrive in the morning, every day; A culture of ownership, high expectations and self- improvement across the whole school – staff and students; and Behaviour expectations, respect for self and others and relationships as the cornerstone. This is an exciting time to be in education and at Albury Public School. I look forward to further discussions today at coffee and cake with the parents and ongoing student consultation this week. UPDATING INFORMATION AND HEALTH CARE PLANS- The Learning and Support Team is currently updating all student health care plans and student details. Please ensure that any Asthma plans, Anaphylaxis plans or medical plans are updated and signed off by the GP and are returned to the school as soon as possible. In the case of an emergency we need to have access to the most accurate and up to date information. Please also ensure that any changes to addresses, phone numbers, emergency contacts or court orders are provided to the office. Your cooperation with this is really appreciated. Have a great week. Week 5 Term 1 28 February, 2018

Last night I attended my first P&C meeting at Albury Public School.

In order to do this, the three year school plan which will drive the changes, will address the following:

The way teachers work collaboratively to plan and program from the syllabus documents where proficiency is the minimum standard;

Teachers collaboratively support each other to improve teaching practice and learning opportunities for students;

Practices that are detrimental to student learning, such as ability grouping classes and labelling of students, will be replaced with all

students being challenged based on their needs at a point in time. This means that assessment will drive the grouping of students which will be fluid and allow students to move to extension or further support depending on their needs with concepts and learning;

A renewed focus on the students as learners and personalised learning. Every child should be known and cared for with strong connections with the home;

Strengthening the Learning and Support team to address the learning needs of every student in consultation with classroom teachers so that every student is ready for a day of learning when they arrive in the morning, every day;

A culture of ownership, high expectations and self- improvement across the whole school – staff and students; and

Behaviour expectations, respect for self and others and relationships as the cornerstone.

This is an exciting time to be in education and at Albury Public School. I look forward to further discussions today at coffee and cake with the parents and ongoing student consultation this week.

ICAS COMPETITIONS- Today the students in Years 2-6 received a Boomerang Blue note with the details of the ICAS Competitions for 2018. These tests are NOT based on the NSW syllabus and are deliberately designed to be a challenge to students and present work which often has not been covered in the classroom. Please note that all the competitions are to be paid for by bulk entry and there will be no refunds given. Participation is voluntary. Full payment for entry to each competition must be made by Friday 16 March. Late entries cannot be accepted. Extra notes are available from the Front Office.

ROLL MONITORS- Congratulations to Sienna Prosser, Skye Siriruang, Chelsea Isaac, Jorgi Jasko, Tegan Inglis and Phoenix Robson who are Year 6 roll monitors that deliver the daily messages to all of the classes. The roll monitors display great organisation and have enjoyed the responsibility of this senior roll. Well done, Roll Monitor Team! Christel Pargeter

STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM- Our chicken coop is now fox proof and ready for chickens. If you have chickens to donate please contact the school and leave your number and Amy Dean or Leanne Schifferle will be in contact.

STAGES 2 AND 3 MINI-ATHLETICS CARNIVAL- This year the students in Stages 2 and 3 will be taking part in Mini-Athletics Carnivals to try out for the field events for the School Athletics Carnival.

Stage 2 (8, 9 and 10 year olds) Wednesday 7 March

Stage 3 (11 year olds, 12,13 year olds) Friday 9 March Students in Stages 2 and 3 who are in an age group that is being run on a day that is not their Stage day, will be given the opportunity to trial on the day their age group is trialling.

Students who turn 8 years old this year and are in Year 2 can only try out if they have given their name to their teacher and also participate in Little Athletics outside of school. They should be aware that they will be competing against 9 and 10 year olds. Students who are absent on the day of their trials due to illness, will be given the opportunity to

do a catch-up trial at lunchtime. Information will be provided on the Daily Message Sheet. There will be no regular Friday Sport for Stages 2 and 3 on Friday 9, 16 or 23

March.

Students should speak to their classroom teacher if they have any questions. It has been terrific to see the students putting new skills into practise or refining their technique during the Sport sessions as a lead up to next week. We hope every student will strive for a personal best in each event. Christel Pargeter and Jacqueline Henderson (Assistant Principals)

ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL- Last Thursday 31 swimmers represented our school at the Albury PSSA Zone Carnival. It was a very successful day and the entire team should be very proud of their performances, behaviour and sportsmanship. All four relay teams won their 4 X 50m freestyle relay race, while Chelsea Isaac and Charlie Murphy were

age champions and Zoe Morrison was runner-up age champion. The following swimmers have now qualified for the Riverina Swimming Championships being held here in Albury on 14 March: Oliver Ayton, Maya Black, Seamus Bready, Hudson Collins, Alice Eggleton, Riley Irvine, Chelsea Isaac, Zachary King, Thomas Lefoe, Sarah Mooney, Zoe Morrison, Charlie Murphy, Isabelle Rae, Noah Spry and Daisy Tuksar. Congratulations and the best of luck to all our talented swimmers. Dylan Clift, Team Manager.

PSSA CRICKET TRIALS- On Monday 26 February, five students attended the Riverina PSSA Cricket trials in Deniliquin. Kade Griparis, Dom Korzeniowski, Noah Spry, Rory Harrap and Harry Grigg spent the day batting, bowling, fielding and played in some centre wicket match simulation games. Congratulations to all of these boys for making it to this level and for representing our school so well. It is a great achievement to have five out of the 12 boys from the Albury District come from Albury Public School. Special congratulations must go to Noah Spry who was selected to trial for the Riverina team over winter. Noah will now be involved in two winter training sessions at Deniliquin before a final selection trial in Barooga in October. Well done boys. Alex Takle (Cricket Coordinator) PSSA FOOTBALL TRIALS- Trials for Albury District PSSA football will take place on Thursday 1 March at lunchtime on the Block. Students in Year 5 or 6 who wish to trial should bring appropriate footwear and clothing (boots will not be necessary as the ground on the Block is quite firm). All students MUST bring a mouthguard. Please note that this is to trial for representative football and is not for the Friday afternoon PSSA competition which will take place in Term 2 and 3. Alex Takle (Football Coordinator). RIVERINA WATER POLO- The Regional water Polo trials will be held in Wagga, later in March. Good luck to Charlie Murphy, Rhys Kilo, Ryleigh Hogan, Zoe Morrison, Chelsea Isaac, Alice Carroll, Maya Black and Ruby Kadaoui who will be representing our school. Christel Pargeter

LIBRARY HELPERS NEEDED!! - If you are able to assist in the library could you please contact me. I need volunteers to cover books as well as other tasks. Lack of experience is no issue as I will show you what is required. Please contact me if you think that you may be able to help. Alison Griffith Teacher Librarian

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE (PRC)- The PRC is a great way to encourage your child’s reading. It is a challenge NOT a competition. There are set reading lists from which the children have to select the majority of their books. K-2 students need to read 30 books. Children 3-6 need to read 20 books. Please go online and check out the website for the rules and reading lists. From March 5 students will be able to enter their reading log online, until then simply keep a print record of the author and title. If you have any questions or queries please contact me in the library. The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge website is: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html Alison Griffith PRC Coordinator

KAS We have enjoyed the beginning of Kindergarten and are

having a wonderful time learning.

We have enjoyed making new friends and playing with them in the playground.

We are learning how to count, add and make patterns in mathematics.

We are learning to concentrate in the ‘Engine Room’ to learn how to write new letters and words.

We take new books home each week to read to our families. We know our teacher and families are very proud of us.
