ALBURY PUBLIC SCHOOL PROUD Member of the crossing point learning community Week 2 Term 1 7 February, 2018 Welcome to Week Two! What a busy week we have already had settling back into the new school year. Welcome to all of our newly enrolled families and our Kindergarten students who have started their education journey with us. I hope that the big smiles we saw on their faces last Wednesday will remain with them throughout their primary school years (and not just on the day they leave us for high school). Starting Kindergarten is a massive milestone in all childrens lives and one that will shape their future educational endeavours. It Is essential that the experience is as stress free and supported as possible so that children feel comfortable at school, safe and part of the education community. It is a long journey that they have ahead of them. The staff and many parents/carers have reported that the students are settled and getting down to the business of learning. Classes were finalised last week with all students moving into their 2018 classes last Thursday, with only a few minor tweaks necessary. Thanks to everyone for ensuring the smooth transition into the new academic year. As a reminder, if you ever have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher in the first instance or the executive staff, including Jessica Brooker or me. Please call the school to make a time. I look forward to the many exciting opportunities our students will have this year at Albury Public School. The staff began the year with the Term 1 staff development day where we completed mandatory training and began our planning for the year including the school plan which will be consulted on at the next P&C meeting on 27 February. This process was started with Ms Howard last term and I am excited to be completing the plan to set the direction for the next three years. The schools draft strategic directions are: A dynamic and engaging learning culture Innovative, evidence-based teaching practice Strong, strategic and effective leadership PARENT INFORMATION SESSIONS. These are scheduled for next Tuesday night, 13 February from 6:30pm. I encourage all parents, new and old to attend and get to know the class teacher and class organisation/programs for 2018. All sessions will commence in the school hall and then parents will move with the class teacher to their classrooms. Kindergarten6:30pm, Year 1 and Year 27:00pm, Year 3 and Year 47:30pm and Year 5 and Year 68:00pm. NB 2/3MM– If your child is in 2/3MM please attend the Stage 1 session, commencing at 7:00pm in the Hall, followed by the session in the classroom. Year 3 parents are also encouraged to attend the Stage 2 general information session in the Hall at 7:30pm. If your child is in 4/5AC - Year 4 parents please attend the 7:30 session, then meet in 4/5ACs classroom with Year 5 parents at 7:45pm. Year 5 parents then attend the 8:00pm session. We look forward to as many parents and carers as possible attending on the night. These sessions are a great opportunity for parents to meet their childrens teachers for 2018. Parking will be available in the school playground, with the entrance through the Smollett St gates. The session in the hall will give generic information about what is occurring for students in those years eg major excursions. The class specific sessions will address specific class activities and routines. We look forward to having many parents share these sessions with our staff. These sessions are not designed to be used for Parent/Teacher interviews. If at any time you wish to meet with a teacher, please contact the school office (ph 60213849) to arrange a mutually convenient time. Parent/Teacher interviews are held at the end of Term One. NB: To enable parents to gain the most from the sessions, we ask that where possible, children do not attend. There will NOT be supervision available for children. STUDENT BOOK PACKS. These will be delivered to all students who have paid tomorrow. If you have not yet purchased the required materials, please complete this as soon as possible at the front office. For all payments received after tomorrow, book packs will be delivered to students weekly. Thank you to all the families who have paid. SWIMMING CARNIVAL. I attended my first Albury Public School swimming carnival yesterday and it was a real treat. The day was superbly organised and it was fabulous to see the comradery amongst the staff and the students, all supporting their sports houses and cooperating to make the day the great success it was. The students were very well-behaved and many of our students were involved in races and other activities for most of the day. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the day, especially to Mrs Coughlan who organised and ran the day. Week 2 Term 1 7 February, 2018

Welcome to Week Two! Starting Kindergarten is a massive milestone in all children’s lives and one that will shape their future educational endeavours. It Is essential that the experience is as stress free and supported as possible so that children feel comfortable

at school, safe and part of the education community. It is a long journey that they have ahead of them.

The staff and many parents/carers have reported that the students are settled and getting down to the business of learning. Classes were finalised last week with all students moving into their 2018 classes last Thursday, with only a few minor tweaks necessary. PICKING UP STUDENTS. A reminder that if you are collecting your child/ren at 3:00pm it should be from the front office area (David Street). All Kindergarten students are to be collected from the Kindergarten area.

Please do not ask our child to wait in the playground. If you are delayed we may not know that your child has not been collected and they will not be under supervision. If you are running late for any unavoidable reason, please ring the office if possible so that students can be moved out of the weather into the office area. This also averts any anxiety your child may experience. School concludes at 3:00pm and it is expected that all students will be collected by 3:15pm.

I would also like to remind you that the playground equipment is out of bounds to all students, including pre-schoolers and Kindergarten students. The school does not provide supervision of the playground equipment after school and we ask that all parents assist us to keep your child/ren safe. Accidents happen when we are distracted and they can be very distressing, especially when they could have been avoided.

Parents/carers are asked not to wait in the playground to collect students after school, especially outside classrooms where the adult conversations can be a distraction to classes in progress. Please consider a cooler area under a tree near the David Street entrance. Enjoy our week sharing the educational journey with your child/ren.

Lianne Singleton, Principal (Rel)

SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDELINES FOR FAMILIES-Parents/carers need to be mindful of the information they are publishing regarding the identity of a child. Parents/carers should only publish online or otherwise, photographs or video footage of a child if they have received permission from the child’s parent or guardian. More information about online privacy can be obtained from the Australian Government’s eSafety office (www.esafety.gov.au). Volunteer parents also need to be aware that a current Working with Children Declaration must be completed before entering the classrooms. These are available at the front office.

BEST START TESTING- Our Kindergarten students have been completing the Best Start assessment tasks during the week. This assessment is completed 1:1 for every student entering Kindergarten each year, so our Kindergarten teachers can benchmark our students’ literacy and numeracy skills. Congratulations to the students on how they have attempted these challenges. Our teachers have been very impressed with the way the ‘2018 Kinders’ have settled into their classrooms- Well done!

CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR EMERGENCY CONTACTS- Parents are requested to inform the school office whenever the family have a different phone number, address or emergency contact. The request is made to assist us to contact you as soon as possible to minimise concerns from your child in an emergency situation.

NEW CLASSES- We were able to move our students in Years 1-6 into their new classes last Thursday. Our staff form classes based upon behaviour, educational and social needs as well as maturity. I sincerely thank all of the staff for the many hours they have given to this very important task.
