Never before have businesses been under such pressure to provide and support multiple high-bandwidth serviceswhile continuing to support traditional revenue-generatingservices. The Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SONET Link provides themeans to maximize bandwidth availability and to fill thatbandwidth effectively.

Businesses have invested billions of dollarsin their SONET network infrastructures, their operations systems, and the personnelto run and maintain them. Customers, both consumers and businesses, are nowdemanding more services, more versatilityand more bandwidth, and these demandsare expected to continue to rise over thenext few years. Consequently, SONETequipment is still called on to providetransport for new and existing services.

Pressure for revenue growth meansthat services must be deployed in the here and now, without dramatic changesto the network topology or to operationalmethods. To fully use and expand thecapabilities of SONET, next-generationtransport solutions must be able toaggregate disparate native channels atdiffering bit rates, groom these signalsseamlessly, and then efficiently fill thetransport “pipes”.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SONET Link (SL) fulfills these requirements by combining the functions of legacySONET add/drop multiplexers (ADMs),the bandwidth-grooming capability ofnarrowband, wideband and broadbanddigital cross-connects, and the opticalfiber-sharing of dense wavelength divisionmultiplexing (DWDM). The Alcatel-Lucent1677 SL offers best-in-class port densitiescombined with the scalability that isnecessary for gradually adding moreservices. What’s more, this class-leadingfeature set comes at a realistic price.

YOUR NEEDSMost operators have sufficient fiber in theground to support current and near-futureneeds, provided that the fiber is usedeffectively. In situations in which morebandwidth is needed, they know that Alcatel-Lucent has a full range of state-of-the-artactive and passive coarse wavelengthdivision multiplexing (CWDM) and DWDMdevices. What operators want is a networkelement (NE) that leverages the existingnetwork, offers data and other services via this network, and grooms signals atthe network edge. The NE must producesubstantial cost savings over incumbentequipment by providing significantlyincreased switching capacity and portdensity, while at the same time controllingheat output and power usage.

Legacy equipment makes it difficult forbusinesses to scale their networks to meetever-changing demands for increasedcapacity and new high-bandwidth services.Upgrading the capacity of a traditionalSONET ring can be a time-consuming and expensive process, often requiring the replacement of thousands of dollars’worth of equipment. Deploying new ringscould be even more complex and difficultto manage, with even further investmentin additional central office equipment toterminate the ring and to switch trafficthroughout the network.

As a next-generation SONET solution, the Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SL eliminatesscaling-limitation issues and additionalring-upgrade complexity. The Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SL provides for future expan-sion as bandwidth needs grow withinmetropolitan and regional networks. Whena new service offering is created, Alcatel-Lucent clients can increase support forhundreds of subtended rings from thesame NE and from a variety of interfaces,to support the myriad offerings that theywill want to provide.

The ability to grow networks with an installed base of equipment providesbusinesses with rapid returns on theirinvestments and saves operational andengineering expenses. Key functionality, such as OC-192, VT1.5 grooming andtransmultiplexer support, allows Alcatel-Lucent clients to get ahead of theircompetition when rolling out next-generation services. On-board, point-to-point DS0 grooming eliminates the needfor a second NE or for inter-machinetrunks. No competitor’s solution beats the Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SL for integratedfunctionality.

Scalability for Increasing Capacity

BANDWIDTH MANAGEMENTSuccessful businesses efficiently manage bandwidth and network resources. As large metropolitan and regional networks evolve to support hundredsof rings and terabytes of capacity in a region, it is imperative that theyhave the power and flexibility to switch and groom end-customer servicesin the most resource-efficient way possible. This means taking small, disparate feeds that are currently transported inefficiently and combiningthem into appropriately sized trunks to maximize return on investment.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SL grooms traffic by taking circuits frommultiple interfaces and switching them onto one pipe for transport acrossthe network. The Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SL supports STS-n (n = 1 to 48c)grooming to make the most efficient use of the carrier’s network infra-structure (see Figure 1). Additionally, two optional modules provide DS0and VT1.5 switching capability, allowing fine-grain bandwidth manage-ment. Full-featured wideband and narrowband grooming are also possiblewith this modest-sized platform using the transmultiplexing card, andcarriers may deploy this capability as needed.

In contrast to the traditional centralized model, the multi-ring termina-tion and bandwidth-grooming capabilities of the Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SLfit the emerging optical network model that disperses bandwidth manage-ment to the edge of the network.

INTEROPERABILITYAs businesses roll out new network equip-ment, this equipment must be integratedinto their back-office environments andunder their operations support systems(OSSs), which provide provisioning, monitoring and management of multiplevendors’ NEs. Hence, the network manage-ment architecture must provide standard,user-friendly, open interfaces to allowother third-party vendors to pick up sup-port for the product. This enables them toprovide comprehensive management suchas end-to-end provisioning and monitoringacross multiple NEs. The Alcatel-Lucent1677 SL is designed with the goal ofdeployment in a carrier-class environmentand includes development for open inter-faces for OSS integration. The Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SL supports interworkingstandards such as open systems inter-connection (OSI) and target ID addressresolution protocol (TARP), and theseallow integration with other vendors’systems.

MULTIFUNCTIONALITYAny new capital expenditure must bejustified by increased revenues and prof-itability, and the Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SLprovides these benefits. For example, itsmulti-ring feature allows numerous usersand circuits to be supported on one NE,thus eliminating the need for multiple NEs(see Figure 2). This decrease in equipmentuse results in an immediate reduction in CAPEX, followed by ongoing savings in OPEX.

In addition to the valuable protectionand restoration capabilities of SONET, theAlcatel-Lucent 1677 SL offers businessesthe opportunity to deliver Gigabit Ethernetservices. The Gigabit Ethernet interface of the Alcatel-Lucent 1677 SL makes useof leading-edge technology to permit thetransport of data services over the existingSONET infrastructure. This capabilityenables new revenue sources in return for compellingly low deployment costs.

directly onto a SONET network (seeFigure 3). VCAT enables these operatorsto offer low-cost Ethernet services, whilemaintaining all the benefits of SONETnetworking and without requiring drasticchanges to the network infrastructure or operational systems.

GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTHAlcatel-Lucent continues to invest heavilyin the development of the 1677 SL, winningindustry interest and customer satisfaction.Recently added functionality includesGigabit Ethernet broadcast, dual-ringinterconnection, transmultiplexing withoutthe need for a vertical switch controller(VSC), DS1 management integration, andDS0 grooming. More is on the way for thisexceptionally flexible and upgradeablesolution.
