Homecoming 1997 was a well a\\aited event for Alcester-Hudson High School The week started out with get up and go day as the students came
to school right out of bed. A new addition was added to the eyentful week. p1cmc da)' The student bod_ was seryed a picnic lunch b)' the student council. The night that e\eryone was waiting for W'as finally here, the crowning of the 1997 Homecoming King and Queen As the lights dimmed and thew ords of "Building a Mystery" filled the gym the 1997 Royalty took the stage. 1997 Attendants were: Fre hmen: ikki Ahart and Keegan Ahart. ophomore: Amber Beeler and Justm Gray. and Jumor, Sara Homandberg and Adam St. Pierre. The King and Queen candtdates were then announced. Sheryl John on and Kevin Blauth. Juhe Joachim and Josh Momn)'. and Kate Ander on and Josh Winquist As the crowd qmeted the envelope was g1 en to the MC's Kyla Honglso and Laurie Evan on and they announced that Sheryl John on and Kevin Blauth would reign over the week. The Royalty were entertained by. skits from the student body and mu-ical selection from Rebecca Ronning. Ntkki Kellen and
Melissa Mead. The program was folloW'ed by a pep rally m the gy-m because of the rainy weather Game day arrived and the mighty Cubs beat the Parker Pheasants. The game was followed by the Homeconung dance. The 1997 Homecommg \\eek was one to be remembered.

Alcester-Hudson High School presented the pla} "Wh) Do We Laugh?" by Stephen Gregg on April 24th and 25th It \\aS a nostalgic look at the hves of an aging couple portrayed during different stages of their lives by Chns Homandberg and Leslie Fickbohm as the children, Luke Bakker and Patge Heeren a the teenagers: Scott Johnson and Bethany Groan as the middle-aged couple, and Nathan Groon and Annie Van Ballegooyen as the senior citit.ens. Sara Heiman and Tara Peters provided the Lighting as the audience re-lived the hves of Mendith and Andrew Powers.

"You Can't Be Too Careful" , a play b Carolyn Lane, was presented by the Alcester-Hudson High School. The elderly women in the Bridge club were portrayed b Mary Lyon, Jenny Horner, Katie Turner, and Julie Joachim. The visitors to the house were Annie Wilson, Corey cott, and Nolan Johnson. The police officer was Matthia Melchizedek and the bank robbers were Colin McKellips and Brad Jurgensen. Keep your doors locked - You can't be too careful!

The theme song, "Time of Your Life", set the mood for Prom '98. The banquet began at 6.30 in the Elementary Gym
The class futures were predicted and we were entertamed by to musical selections and a poem. Spectators for the grand march were lined up to the gates and were all anxious to see who the new prom King & Queen would be. The bleachers were packed and the couples were escorted out and finally the new AHHS Prom Royalty were revealed .. .King Josh Winquist and Queen Jenmfer Holte. The dance was a great time, and afterwards, the couples boarded four buses to go to the after prom party held at the YMCA in toux Falls. Prizes were handed out back at the gym and everyone went home to sleep!

The Cub Cross Country team started out mth 23 runners and Mr Kroger at the head agam They had 5 re
turning letter \\inners to get the season tarted Tlus year was the first year m many
years that Alcester-Hudson had a full girl team. They turned out to be very successful. make It to the state finals as a team!!! The boys team placed 2nd in the Big Stoux Conference, and went on to send John and Erik Sommen old to state Out of 136 runners. John fini hed 75th and Enc finished l08th. John ommcrvold led the boys by receiving medals in all 12 meets for finishing as one oftllc top 20 runners at each meet. Mathias Thompson, and Bryan Burt. IndiVIdual standouts were Bryan Burt, an 8th grader, who placed 4th in the Districts to qualify for the Regions. Josh Moumy. senior. who qualified for his third trip to the State Tournament by placmg 2nd in both the D1stricts and Reg1ons. Jared Barnes. freshmen, had a stellar year b_ winning his second Big Sioux Conference championship and District title. wmning his fir t Region champ10nsh1p and placmg 3rd in the State Tournament at 112 pounds.

The 1997-98 boys basketball team was coached by Mr. Kraning and assisted by Mr. Seivert. Mr . .Kraning enjoyed the season, was qmte proud of the seniors, and said that they were a great team to work with. The senior letter winners were Matt Seivert, Matt Neu, Lonnie Johnson, Kevin Blauth, and Travis Oornimsse. Junior letter winners were Eric Haugland, Brian Larsen, and John Sommervold. Erik Sommervold was a sophomore letter winner. The season ended 12-8. The All-Conference winners were Matt Seivert who made first team and was voted MVP, Kevm Blauth made third team, and Eric Haugland received an honorable mention. Matt Se1 ert made first team All-Region and third team All-State, and the SO elite BB team Matt 1s selected to play m the SO BCA All-Star Game in July, and is 1 of 8 finalists for SO Mr. Basketball. Mr. Kraning would like to give thanks to h1s stat girls, and cheerleaders.

The 1997-98 volleyball season was successful. The Lad Cubs were coached by Karen Bossman and she
was assisted by Linda Thompson. The season ended with the record of 11-21. But, they still achieved many records. In the AI-ffiS Record Book records were set and broken b_ Jessie Hughe . Leslie Fickbohm, and Kate Anderson. The Cubs had a hard district with vennillion. State A champ , coming from their distnct. The Cubs had tremendous leadership shown with 3 eniors: Kate Anderson. Jenny Hoi the, and Heidi Larson. Kate Anderson was selected to be a member of the All-Conference Team. On the Honorable MentionTeam were Jessie Hughes and Leslie Fickbolun The Cubs look fonvard to an awesome season next year w1th 7 returning letter winners.

The boys and girls track team had a very successful season. The boys qualified in six events, long jump, triple jump, 400m dash 400 relay, 800 relay, and 1600 relay. son. The Cubs kept busy competing in eight e ents The boys squad captured dual v.ins over Dakota Valle and Elk Point Jefferson. The Girls defeated Dakota Valley in a dual e ent. The season was highlighted with six golfers qualifying for the state golf meet held at Huron's Broddland Creek Golf Course. The 1998 edition of the AlcesterHudson Quiz Bowl quad had an eventful year. The eleven-member squad \\-as under the direction of Mr. Long. The season kicked orr with one of the highlights, an appearance on KMEG's Trivia Bowl program. They also captured the Big Sioux Conference Academic Bowl title for the third consecutive year. Other events of the year \vere the annual AHHS Community Quiz Bowl which the "Teachers" team won and the Alcester-In itational Quiz Bowl which was won by Beresford. The seniors of the team were Kate Anderson, Katie Van Engen and Josh Moumy. The juniors include Brad Jurgensen, Katie Turner. and Shelli Eden. Sophomores were Justin Scott, Nolan Johnson, Colin McKellips, and Karen Kezar Adam Mielke was the lone freshmen. Good luck!!
