BEER
Beer is one of the world's oldest andmost widely consumed alcoholicbeverages, and the third most popular
drink overall after water and tea.A liquid mix, called wort, is prepared by
combining yeast and malted cereal, such as corn, rye, wheat or barely.
Fermentation of this liquid mix producesalcohol and carbon dioxide.
The process of fermentation is stoppedbefore it is completed to limit the alcohol

Short-term effects of alcohol consumptioninclude intoxication and dehydration.
Long-term effects of alcohol include changes in themetabolism of the liver and brain and alcoholism(addiction to alcohol).
Alcohol intoxication affects the brain, causing slurred
speech, clumsiness, and delayed reflexes.
Alcohol stimulates insulin production, which speedsup glucose metabolism and can result in low bloodsugar, causing irritability and (for diabetics) possibledeath.
Severe alcohol poisoning can be fatal.

Alcohol also limits the production ofvasopressin fromthe hypothalamus and the secretion of this hormone fromthe posterior pituitary gland.
This is what causes severe dehydration when largeamounts of alcohol are drunk.
It also causes a high concentration of water inthe urine and vomit and the intense thirst that goes alongwith a hangover.
