ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader,
Another year has come and gone and we have reached that busy
time of year again.
Our new Wine Coast Ward councillors have been announced and
congratulation to the three re-elected: Don Chapman, Gail Kilby
and Wayne Olsen. Welcome also to Hazel Wainright who is newly
elected. ABRA looks forward to working with these people in the next few years. You will find a letter from Don Chapman in Letters
To The Editor on p. 4.
The Esplanade cliff-top pathway construction is continuing at a
steady pace, At the time of writing they are working on the section
at Snapper Point. It is a pity the council is again spending heaps of
our rate money putting in infrastructure that is not optimised for the
use to which it is supposedly designed. Despite a strong message
they received during the consultation process to put the path as
near as practical to the cliff-face to retain the views that make it
such a popular walking and cycling venue, they are only putting it
there when they are skirting around the car parks or where there is no room to put it elsewhere. Where there is plenty of space
between the roadway and the fence they are laying the path closer
to the road, not near the cliff top. Like many of their BMX track
style footpaths installed adjacent to the roadway so that every
driveway invert creates a dip and rise, many users will probably
ignore this new path and continue walking along the cliff top. (An
email pointing this out to the person responsible at council did not
even warrant a reply it seems.) At least the new pathway won’t be
blocked part of the week by bins like their footpaths!
As this is the last issue for the year I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our advertisers and contributors for their contributions
during the past year. On behalf of ABRA I wish you all a happy
Christmas and a safe and fulfilling new year in 2015.
Remember January 26th the Australia Day breakfast at Symonds
Reserve in your diaries. It commences at 8am.
As you will see below, our December general meeting is a
pre-Christmas meeting with the opportunity to chat afterwards over
a ‘cuppa & bikkie.’
Several of our new Councillors have indicated they will be there to
meet & discuss issues with people.
I hope you enjoy the issue.

Noah's Ark: Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah's Ark.
ONE: Don't miss the boat.
TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat!
THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the
Ark . FOUR: Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask
you to do something really big.
FIVE: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that
needs to be done.
SIX: Build your future on high ground.
SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on
board with the cheetahs.
NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile.
TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic
by professionals.
ELEVEN: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils
state wide from sending these materials to landfill.
As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will
also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no
longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.
The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource
Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the
Council dump off South Road N of the bridge). There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste
to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the
Ewaste section.
You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the card they issue you with. This card will
take you off their computer.
This can be done any day of the week.
Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact
Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace
incandescent globes) contain mercury.
If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this
can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous
results.
They should be disposed of properly through recycling.
Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points
are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga
Environment Centre.

Dear Editor
When I attended ABRA’s AGM in early October this
year I was delighted that those residents who attended had
so many questions to ask in relation to Council projects in the Aldinga area. As a result I was able to ask questions
of Administration on behalf of those residents and I’m
fairly sure that most of those questions have been
addressed including a pedestrian access path to Aldinga Beach Road having been improved, signage and their
locations at Aldinga boat ramp changed, bus shelter
location to be changed on Pridham Blvd to suit most commuters, raising Council awareness the poor road
surface quality of Old Coach Road and improvements to
night time visibility of Quinliven Road upgrades.
What became clear to me as a result of that meeting is
that as a Wine Coast ward councillor I need to attend your
meetings on a much more regular basis and that our
residents need to know that their ward councillors are elected to advocate on behalf of any resident who asks
them. So, if you don’t mind publishing this letter in your
next newsletter I will be happy to represent any resident who asks.
It has now been confirmed by the Electoral Commission
that I will again be one of your ward councillors for the next four years so I look forward to a much closer
working relationship with your Committee and Aldinga
residents.
Thanks to all those who supported me.
Regards
Cr Don Chapman

ALDINGA COMMUNITY HELPS
LIONS LADIES CELEBRATE OPENING The Willunga Lions Ladies Auxiliary opened the
doors of their newest addition to their facility on November 1st. Residents of the Aldinga community had
been invited to a ribbon cutting opening ceremony with a
sausage sizzle to follow. The opening of the new facility which is a large shed at the rear of the Boutique Op Shop
on Butterworth Road has been a joint operation between
the Willunga Lions Ladies, Willunga & Districts Lions Club and the Australian Lions Foundation. This building is
to be used as a sorting, storage and distribution centre.
Many charities benefit from goods packed and distributed
from here. The Lions Ladies President Margaret Dorton
welcomed everyone and introduced Lion Bill Binns who
gave a brief history of the development of the Boutique and of the activities and monies raised in the 41 years since it
started operations. A written history of the
Boutique is available to view in the shop.
The ribbon cutting was performed by Rhonda Foreman and Jaci Bishop in front of a large crowd of Boutique
customers and Lions members. Rhonda and Jaci have been
members of the Ladies Auxiliary since the formation of the Willunga Lions Club in 1969. A sausage
sizzle provided by Willunga Lions Club members was
enjoyed by all. The Christmas Toy sale was on as well and many took advantage of the great variety of toys, dolls,
books and games on offer.
The Boutique raised and distributed $100,000 worth
of goods and money to many charities in 2013 – 2014. It has supported a large number of Lions Foundations
which support many Australian and International Lions
projects. Though Lions are known worldwide for their
successful initiatives in world vision health, child health,
and disaster relief funding, Lions service is as diverse as our members. Lions volunteer for many different kinds of
projects – caring for the environment, feeding the hungry
and aiding seniors and the disabled.

Willunga Walks has gone online! Members of the public can now access information about
our local stories and heritage via several online and
mobile sites. Firstly the Willunga Walks mobile guide for
exploring heritage in Willunga can be downloaded from App stores. This guide was launched on 16th November
by Trust President, Prof. Norman Etherington, and local
member Hon. Jamie Briggs. In addition, some buildings in Willunga now display heritage plaques incorporating
QR codes, to enable smart-phone access to online
information about the building. Linking these initiatives is Willunga Now and Then’s ever-expanding website at
www.willunganowandthen.net.au, a treasure trove of over
100 stories and articles about Willunga’s buildings and
people. We encourage you to explore our history in new ways!
The Branch’s Research and Library helpers have been
particularly bus during Willunga’s 175th year, responding to requests for information about local clubs,
organisations and people. We also continue to receive
donations, thank you. Recent items have included the Pounsett/Whitefield fam-
ily book, Ida’s 1930s recipe book, photos of the Kernick
family, buttons from Railway uniforms, school
work-books and much more

Aldinga Beach C.F.S Cadets
After many months of careful planning the Aldinga
Beach Cadets (13x Cadets 7xCadet leaders) attended their annual camp at West Beach In September. A flat tyre
almost put a spanner in the works, but thanks to the
wonderful M & D Auto, disaster was averted and we
were on our way. On arrival the cadets were tasked with setting up their camp. After some excellent team work,
tents were up and everyone was ready for a well earned
dinner. With thanks to Ellis meats, dinner was some great tasting hamburgers....definitely no left overs, they were a
real hit!
Saturday morning; after checking out the play equipment at West Beach it was off to Noarlunga for 3 games of
Lazer Skirmish. After some mighty battles, sneak attacks
and a whole lot of fun, the battle between cadets and
cadet leaders was called a draw and it was time to head to Haigh's chocolate Factory. After a tour of the factory,
learning lots about the chocolate making process, and
tasting some samples (yum!) it was lunchtime. Lunch at Glover Park on South terrace was pretty relaxed with
subway sandwiches, and everyone (including Cadet
leaders!) checking out the play equipment. For the
afternoon it was back to West Beach to enjoy a swim in the pool, a great way to spend a hot day! Dinner that night
was at Charlies Diner at Brighton. We all ate like kings
enjoying the wide variety of foods on offer. Sunday Morning dawned with some very rough weather,
which made packing up the tents pretty interesting!
With plenty of great teamwork the cadets helped each other to pack up camp, and then it was on to the next ad-
venture. Our next stop was the Maritime Museum in Port
Adelaide, where we all learned a bit more about our mari-
time past. The Star of Greece was featured quite a bit and it was interesting learn more about where we live. Lunch
was fish and chips and then it was time to head home. All
in all a great camp was had by all.
Some of the comments from cadets who attended camp
--camp was camptastic--really good camp--no more
jumping pillows--yer it was alright jumping pillow was exquisite--Charlies Diner food was nice--Haigh’s choco-
late is expensive but delicious-- Chocolate was nice food
was nice--really enjoyed Lazer tag--camp was good be-
cause I got to play soccer--the mirrors in the bathroom were amazing--it was alright, it was ok, it was amazing
food was awesome--it was awesomely awesome. Tanya Steele & Liz Pryor

At the Invitation of President of the Aldinga Bay Bowl-
ing Club John Clissitt, 64 keen bowlers from Clubs in
and around the southern areas converged on Aldinga Bay Bowling Club’s greens early in November to play an
Open Fours Tournament in what were perfect sunny
weather conditions. Teams playing were from The Great Southern Bowling
Association, Beaumont, Somerton Park, Ascot Park,
Happy Valley, Reynella, Myponga, McLaren Vale,
McLaren Flat, Willunga, Yankalilla and Aldinga. Ron Colgan’s Happy Valley team were the eventual winners.
Ron pictured below with his team being presented with
cash prizes by Cassandra, representing sponsor for the day, Alfred James Funeral Homes and with Patron of
ABBC, Ken Coxall.
Regular Pennant Competition bowlers received a much welcomed surprise recently when Sandy Mount from
Raine and Horne presented Aldinga Beach Bowling Club
with a set of sponsored brand new bowling mats and jacks, to be used exclusively for weekly pennant compe-
titions.
Sandy is Principal of Raine and Horne Real Estate Fran-chise, McLaren Vale and he is keen to support the ABBC
bowling club and its members as
much as he can during the season.
Sixteen Night Owls bowling teams are now keenly contesting the ‘under
lights’ summer competition.
Sandy is Principal of Raine and Horne Real Estate Franchise,
McLaren Vale and he is keen to sup-
port the ABBC bowling club and its members as much as he can during
the season. Sixteen Night Owls
bowling teams are now keenly contesting the ‘under
lights’ summer competition. Some say it’s the delicious sausage sizzle they have be-
fore the game at Nightowls that gives them ‘the edge’.
We’re not so sure about that, but in any case many locals are enjoying coming to Aldinga Bay Bowling Club on
Tues, Wed, Thurs and Sat each week to play both social
and competitive bowls ‘On The Green!’ Come Join Us Soon.

PATRICK
A Change of Plans
As a motor bike enthusiast Patrick competed in cross
country enduros, road trials, dirt track racing and owned a string of Yamahas, Hondas and a Bultaco.
At 22 years of age he had a plan - a plan that was totally
disrupted, by an unexpected encounter. He had decided to go all-out after wealth accumulation, and started by sub-
letting his house. A bad experience with troublesome ten-
ants disillusioned him somewhat but opened him up for a rethink and a profound change of direction.
His next tenant, Brian, a young teacher from the Southern
Vales Christian school, impressed him just by his life
style. There was something about him and the friends who visited him. And within a few months Patrick
amazed everyone by wanting to get baptised and then by
fully committing his life to Christ.
Out went the bikes and the stress of pursuing security
through materialism (his rat race) and in came a peaceful
and fulfilling life-style with a quiet joy, marriage and suc-cessful children (now adults). And all his needs have been
met - with challenges; but without the striving.
For Patrick, now 55 years old, Christmas has a special meaning. He says he made a good trade (his own plan for
that of the One he gave his life to) which he says comes
from accepting the Giver - and not just the gifts - with the
bonus of eternal life.
Patrick's church (aldingabaybaptist.org.au, 85565570) is
hosting their 10th Christmas Carols: Symonds Reserve 14
December- carnival 4pm; carols 7:30pm. Major event!

Heat stroke Summer is on us and heatstroke can be a major risk to your
pet’s health.
Dogs normally pant to lose heat; but if they cannot cool
themselves down sufficiently, heatstroke will result when the body temperature rises above 41 degrees celsius.
What causes heatstroke? One of the most common causes is being left inside a
parked car on a warm day - the temperature inside the car
can double in minutes; even if the window is left down.
Over-exercising on hot days - the amount of exercise should be moderated depending on temperature, and timed
for early morning or late afternoon once it has cooled.
Other risk factors are obesity, and thick-coated breeds.
What are the signs? Dogs will initially be agitated, panting, drooling, and barking or whining. As dehydration occurs and body
temperature increases they go into shock, where gum
colour is bright red and heart rate increases. Panting will
become excessive and breathing laboured and distressed. The dog may vomit or have diarrhoea. Eventually
circulatory collapse will occur; the gums will appear blue,
followed by convulsions or unconsciousness, then death.
What is the treatment? It is vital that these dogs are treated as soon as possible to cool them down - this means contacting your veterinarian
as soon as possible, and providing some initial
management at home.
1) Your dog should be hosed down or placed in a tap water bath, if possible with an electric fan blowing on them.
NEVER use ice baths as this will cause retention of heat
within the dog’s body. Ensure airways are not blocked. You can apply ice to the belly, armpits and groin region.
2) Transport your dog to a vet, wrapped in soaking towels
and icepacks.
3) The vet may need to place your dog on a fluid drip, perform other emergency procedures or give medications
to treat the shock and other disorders caused by heatstroke.
Organ failure (such as kidney failure or brain damage) is a major and possibly fatal complication of severe heatstroke.
Prevention is easy! Avoid leaving dogs in parked cars,
don’t over-exercise on warm days, and ensure your dog has access to a shaded area and cool water.

NUMBER PATTERNS. A FIGURE CURIOSITY
Here is a novel arrangement of figures which ex-plains itself : 0 x 9 plus 1 = 1 1 x 9 “ 2 = 11 12 x 9 “ 3 = 111 123 x 9 “ 4 = 1,111 1234 x 9 “ 5 = 11,111 12345 x 9 “ 6 = 111,111 123456 x 9 “ 7 = 1, 111,111 1234567 x 9 “ 8 = 11, 111,111 12345678 x 9 “ 9 = 111, 111,111 123456789 x 9 “ 10 = 1,111, 111,111 A specimen of the eccentricities of numbers:-
1 x 8 plus 1 = 9
12 x 8 " 2 = 98 123 x 8 " 3 = 987 1234 x 8 " 4 = 9876 12345 x 8 " 5 = 98765 123456 x 8 " 6 = 987654 1234567 x 8 " 7 = 9876543 12345678 x 8 " 8 = 98765432 123456789 x 8 " 9 = 987654321
CENTURY MAKING
The following examples show how the sum of 100 can be
represented by using the nine digits in their correct order, plus arithmetical signs:
(a) 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + (8 x 9) = 100.
(b) 12+ 3 - 4+ 5+ 67+ 8+ 9, = 100.
(c) 123 + 45 - 67 + 8 - 9 = 100.
The next two examples show the nine digits in their
reverse order. You will notice that (d) is (a) reversed:
(d) (9x8)+ 7+ 6+ 5+ 4+ 3+2+ 1 = 100. (e) 98 - 76+ 54+ 3+ 21 = 100.
A method of using the nine digits, each once only, but in any order, so that by simple addition they sum to exactly 100, is:
(f) 15 + 36 + 47 = 98 + 2 = 100.
The result of multiplying the figures 142857 in var-ied order, but in similar sequence, by 7 and dividing by 9 is very interesting: 142857 x 7 = 999999 ÷ 9 = 111111 285714 x 7 = 1999998 ÷ 9 = 222222 428571 x 7 = 2999997 ÷ 9 = 333333 571428 x 7 = 3999996 ÷ 9 = 444444 714285 x 7 = 4999995 ÷ 9 = 555555 857142 x 7 = 5999994 ÷ 9 = 666666

Member of Community and Neighbourhood Houses and Centres Asso-
St Ann’s Anglican Church, Aldinga is gearing up for the summer with the introduction of a new Family Service
on the first Sunday of each month at 9am, which looks
like fun for all the family.
Launched on 2nd November, the first service proved to be a great success with interactive fun for children and some
challenging thinking for adults as well.
Rev’d Nick Shutt, who is currently looking after the Southern Vales Pastoral District whilst on a break from
his normal duties as a parish priest in Dartmoor, Devon
UK said, “It has been great to be involved in this new ven-
ture as the whole congregation is supporting this
exciting new development. It is going to be a fun
way to worship God. I am only sorry that I have to go home to a Dartmoor winter while things hot
up here. Do come along and be part of this new
initiative. All are welcome.”
The next service will be on 7th December at 9am. Further information contact Pat Roper 8386 2470.

Earlier this term, staff from
Catholic Primary Schools in the
Southern Hills region joined to work
with Professor Paul Clarke from the
UK – Co Director and Founder of the Pop Up Foundation, on the topic of
building sustainable communities.
The aim of the MAKING A DIF-
FERENCE PROJECT (MAD) is to
nurture a programme that aligns and
connects local primary schools in
sustainable education with regional
and global processes.
Angus from Miss Balacco’s year 4/5
learning community explains how his class is contributing to the
MAD project – “We are growing zucchini and sunflower seeds in
recycled yoghurt containers to help
the community and the school. We
have two containers, we are taking
one home to grow and one to grow
at school. We are creating more
nature and making our world even
more beautiful.”
Hannah: “I think planting the sun-
flowers and the zucchinis is a really
good idea because if we do a little thing we will make a difference
because lots of big things will grow.
We want to spread awareness to the community by showing them
if we all planted one seed we can help the world.”
Holli: “Just before Christmas when our zucchinis and sunflowers
have grown we are going to walk
down to the local shopping centre
and give them to the community.
We hope to make their day by
giving them a gift.”
The students of Miss Balacco’s
learning community have em-
braced this project and are nurtur-
ing their seedlings each day in the
hope to ‘make a difference’.
Galilee MAD Project ‘Making a difference’
If we all do something little it can make a big difference!
Can you hold your breath underwater for 7 minutes? Diving with full breathing apparatus is one thing, but year 12
student Tom Campbell decided to ‘take the plunge’ this year when
he chose free-diving as his year 12 project entitled:
“The Ocean One Breath at a Time: Entering the Amazing World of Free
Diving.” Tom has been mentored by local Adelaide diver, Brent Quilliam,
currently a National and World class free-diving competitor.
Free-diving relies on the diver’s ability to hold his or her breath
until resurfacing without the aid of breathing apparatus.
Tom explains “Extreme sports are all about adrenaline but free-
diving requires complete calm. You have to listen to your body
and recognise your own limits. You have to learn how to shut out the world and work with, rather than fight, your survival instincts.
It’s all in the mind!”
Tom recently placed 2nd in the “Fish Film Festival” with a short
documentary entitled “The Ocean One Breath at a Time”. Tom
shot his footage whilst free-diving and it is indicative of the ex-
traordinary opportunity a diver has to capture spectacular footage
whilst moving through the water in such an unobtrusive way.

Along with his year 12 class mates, Tom will be speaking about his project on Sunday 16 November in the Willunga Waldorf
School hall. Other student projects will also be presented on Sun-
day 15 November and Saturday 22 November.

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn
off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, 'Mummy, will you sleep with me tonight?'
The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. 'I can't dear,' she said. 'I have to sleep in Daddy's room.'
A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice:
'You big sissy.' It was that time, during the Sunday morning service,
for the children's sermon.
All the children were invited to come forward. One little girl was wearing a particularly pretty dress and, as
she sat down, the minister leaned over and said, 'That is a
very pretty dress. Is it your Easter Dress?'
The little girl replied, directly into the minister's clip-on mi-crophone, 'Yes, and my Mum says it's a bitch to iron.'
