The neighborhood of Saussure was rejuvenated by the addition of a bright and creative aluminum wall cladding to the Rézo offi ces which now stand out from the otherwise dull environment of heavily frequented railway land. This eye-catching building was designed by Anne Démians architects.
For this unique façade, the architect combined full panels, perforated panels and large cut-out designs in anodized aluminum. In addition to the design aspect, this construction choice had some functional benefi ts as well. The curtain-like façade serves as a light shield which breaks the direct sunlight shining through the large window areas, and therefore prevents heat accumulation in the window area.
To ensure its stability a minimum thickness of 5 mm was needed. At present, Aleris’ 55HX® is the only alloy in the market that meets that stringent requirement.
Eiffage Métal, a leading engineering and con-struction fi rm, responded successfully to the architects’ tender, having already taken 55HX® into their portfolio. Thierry Le Lay, Key Account Manager at Aleris further explained that they immediately recognized the benefi ts of the metal, such as its rigidity, durability and light weight. The partnership continues to grow between Eiffage Métal and Aleris with the new “Les Halles” project, downtown Paris.

NEW RÉZO BUILDING PARIS 55HX®
Built to welcome the UEFA Euro 2012 football championship, the national stadium in the Polish capital has a spectacular aluminum façade: the white and red rectangles made of fine aluminum mesh resemble a waving national fl ag and appear to fl oat weightlessly in the air.
A total of almost 800 rectangular aluminum panels surround the actual structure of the stadium, giving it an almost playful lightness. Aleris supplied the natural aluminum for the innovative façade construction – the 5005 alloy – while construction and assembly was handled by the Polish company Mostostal Zabrze S.A..
The distinctive metallic look perfectly captures the project designers’ vision. The silver and red tones, are achieved by color anodizing the aluminum mesh panels.
“Because of the stadium’s great height (max. 70 m), the engineers anticipated particularly high wind pressure. So right from the start, we conducted wind channel tests to eliminate stability problems. The 5005 alloy aluminum mesh has proven to be up to the challenges,” explains Krystian Heisig, Aleris Sales Director Eastern Europe.
“Indeed despite its light, open feel, the façade performs a heavy-duty function, for it supports the entire stadium roof.”

POLAND’S TALLEST STATE-OF-THE-ART STADIUM IN NATIONAL COLORS

The outer silos of a former malting plant still stand as a recognizable beacon in the landscape, but the 2 center towers have been replaced by a new transparent square volume thus creating living spaces.
For the façade the architect envisioned a contemporary look featuring aluminum cladding with straight, sharp cut edges. Since the corners were not to be flanged, the panels had to have a “natural flatness.” Therefore Cuprochimique (Ghent) recommended Aleris’55HX® sheets in 3 mm thickness which provided the required result.
The cladding was “invisibly” fixed to the rear construction on-site by Wuyts Gevelbouw which designed a new profi le specifi cally for the project.
To complement the color of the concrete towers the aluminum panels have been anodized in a light bronze tone. ”When proposing two samples of aluminum in the required anodized color (C31), the architect decided that the color sample based on Aleris’ 55HX® provided the best look,” said Remco Baartmans of Alumet.

High glass front panels and façades made of perforated aluminum sheets characterize the architecture of Audi showrooms around the world.Audi, a pioneer in using aluminum in automotive manufacturing, features the light metal with its matte silver sheen in its brand communications, including the look and design of the dealerships and branches.
Audi is particularly demanding when it comes to the color of the fi nished façade elements. “There cannot be even the slightest variance across the entire façade of an Audi terminal,” explains Hans- Ulrich Koch, Managing Director of Dillinger Fabrik Gelochter Bleche GmbH (DF).

A RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX NESTLED IN THE SCENIC LANDSCAPE OF ZUG, SWITZERLAND
The colorful, shimmering look of the façades in the new residential complex in Zug´s Riedpark is at-tributable to fi ligree profi les made by the Swiss Tata Steel subsidiary, Montana Bausysteme AG.
The Hammer Retex Group, one of the leading real estate companies in Central Switzerland, outsourced the planning and realization of the project to the renowned architects Mueller Sigrist, EM2N Mathias Mueller and Daniel Niggli in Zurich.
Everyone involved agreed that the attractiveness of the residential complex should also be evident from the outside. By using aluminum with a width of 1,250 mm, and modern folding machines capable of forming almost any conceivable profi le, Montana created a curtain façade of angular or circular shapes in three different colors that upon completion shimmers in dark red, dark blue and dark brown.
“As the latter color effect plays a particular role, Montana opted for 55HX® that was developed by Aleris for the contemporary requirements associated with modern decorative and outdoor architecture. 55HX® provides color consistency,” commented François Van Engeland from Aleris.

THE MULTISTORY CARPARK OF THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY ADDENBROOKE’S HOSPITAL
The new car park in Addenbrooke, an otherwise simple and straight forward cubic structure, now stands out in its neighborhood thanks to a playful façade of cut, colored and twisted aluminum made from Aleris’ 151EX quality.
James & Taylor, façade specialists, have a well-established expertise and trust in 151EX. Samples were tested and met the expectations of formability envisaged by the designers, which had been unattainable with classic architectural specifi cations.
The aluminum plates were guillotined lengthwise and twisted until a helical shape mimicking the form of DNA was achieved. The material was then anodized natural before being powder coated on just one face in bright yellow to match the crops grown in the surrounding area.
The fi nal result is an elegant and highly distinctive landmark, winning it the RIBA East Award 2015.

THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTER IN DALIAN
The new conference center truly seems to have been pulled straight from the future into the northwest Chinese economic and leisure metropolis of Dalian. Both the interior and exterior contain Aleris aluminum alloy 55HX®.
This icon and symbol of urban development is designed by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU and combines the rational elements of a modern congress center with the fl owing lines of traditional Asian buildings and the smooth forms of the ocean.
Sustainability – as a philosophy – partly prompted the use of aluminum for the interior and exterior wall cladding. The distinctive aesthetics of aluminum also played a key role, just as in many other contemporary and ambitious architectural projects around the world.
Some 700 tons of Aleris 55HX® were used both for the inside and outside paneling of the Dalian International Conference Center. There were a few reasons for choosing this Aleris alloy. First, the anodized aluminum has a high surface quality and is excellent for shaping. Additionally, Aleris 55HX® not only provides color uniformity across numerous casting batches but also long-term color stability under all weather conditions, which is an important factor when so close to the ocean.

ALUMINUM PANELS PUT AN ICONIC FACE ON STOCKHOLM’S FRIENDS ARENA
The Friends Arena, Scandinavia’s most modern and comfortable venue for sporting, enter-tainment and music events, has taken shape in Stockholm’s Solna district. The external cladding of distinctive, triangular aluminum panels illustrates how effectively aluminum can be employed as a material in modern, high-tech construction projects.
Many designers all over the world turn to aluminum for architectur-ally ambitious building projects because of its low weight, high corrosion resistance and timeless yet modern look. And the design-ers of Sweden‘s new national stadium, Berg Arkitektkontor AB, Arkitekterna Krook & Tjäder, were no exception.
For the exterior cladding of the Friends Arena, they selected 1.8 mm thick sheets, cut in a triangular shape and mounted on a supporting construction made of aluminum sections that each hold eight panels.
The design gives the façade of the stadium a honeycomb texture, creating a remarkable, three-dimensional effect. This effect is enhanced by back lighting the façade with powerful LEDs – these can be confi gured individually for each event.
Two Swedish companies made sure that the stadium´s external skin was manufactured and assembled without a hitch. Alumeco delivered the Aleris sheets, while CNC Plat, a sheet working specialist, carried out the construction and assembly of the aluminum cladding.

AMBITIOUS INTERIOR DESIGN WITH ALERIS ALUMINUM
The interior of the new terminal clearly demonstrates Tianjin’s architectural style, which combines Chinese and Western elements, as well as ancient culture and modern design. It shows in the ample use of Aleris highly decorative aluminum material.
The new terminal has an impressive width of 652 m, a length of 395 m and reaches a height of up to 43.5 m. Tianjin Huahui Design Company designed an ambitious aluminum interior deco-ration with inner and outer ceiling structures for which Shenzhen Sipei Industrial Co., in partnership with Aleris, supplied 3 different alloys:
·· 55HX®for all the columns;·· AA5754 for the inner walls;·· AA3005 for the ceiling structure and honeycomb panels.
Aluminum use for interior decoration in Chinese public buildings is expected to rise further. The metal is esteemed for its light weight, durability, non-fl ammability and recyclability.

THE NEW MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART IN NEW YORK
When approaching the museum, you can’t help but think of a tower of white, unevenly stacked shoe boxes. It gives the impression that the creative process is still underway, a little bit like contemporary art itself, to which the building is dedicated.
Clad in a lustrous, silver aluminum mesh, the façade is particularly striking from the outside. This outer shell not only protects, but also emphasizes the simple, cubic form of the building. “We wanted an industrial-seeming material for the façade,” explains the Japanese architect’s offi ce SANAA, “one that recalls the workshops and small metalworking businesses that used to be located here.”
“The expanded metal meets all the requirements of modern resource-saving engineering standards: staggered cuts are made in the metal without material loss and afterwards stretched. With a suitable coating, expanded metal is heavier duty than woven or welded versions since they have neither joints nor welded seams.”
Aleris, in conjunction with James &Taylor, developed a customized solution out of Aleris proprietary alloy 151EX for the process. The thickness of the light yet strong ductile material is 3 to 6 mm; and the widths are up to 1,600 mm.

THE NEW FACE OF “NEW AMSTERDAM”
This offi ce block in downtown Amsterdam received a spectacular new aluminum façade. With some 2,000 aluminum panels in two carefully coordinated bronze tones, refl ecting the light like a cut dia-mond and offering a different impression from every perspective, the façade seems to be alive.
“The spectacular shade effects of the new façade, the refl ections, the interplay between light and darker bronze tones, all require an exceptionally high quality aluminum alloy. Even though the anodizing adds a color, the metallic appearance of the aluminum is unchanged, which was one of the architects’ main specifi cations,” Remco Baartman from Alumet explains. “Anodizing also gives the material a certain gloss, an effect that can’t be achieved with a powder coating.“
“For the very large formats 2 mm thick aluminum was required to give the necessary stability. These sheets have been deep-drawn into shape, then anodized and fi nally turned into panels by us,” explains Ed Prins of Prins Panelen.
“Special requirements demand a special material. We therefore proposed a modifi ed alloy with softer characteristics that allowed enough fl exibility for deep-drawing,” said Isabelle Baeyens from Aleris, adding: “With 70 years of experience, Aleris is able to recommend the optimal solution for an individual application to every customer.”

INNSBRUCK CHILDREN’S AND HEART CENTER CHOSE 55HX® ALUMINUM FOR ITS FAÇADE
The unusual façade of the new Children’s and Heart Center at Innsbruck University Hospital promises to be a real landmark for the capital of Tyrol. The Aleris high-quality anodized alloy 55HX® was supplied by Metall- und Service Center.
“Around 40 tons of Aleris 55HX® alloy were used to build the architecturally striking façade of the new Children’s and Heart Center in Innsbruck. In addition to the stringent product quality requirements, color uniformity of the anodized layer was vitally important, which made 55HX® the logical choice, especially as for such a large façade the alloy has to be produced in several batches,” explains Markus Kerbler, manager of MSC Neumarkt.
Aleris 55HX® alloy provides color uniformity of the surfaces across all batches, and this was a decisive factor in achieving the uniform appearance of the façade required by the architect.
“That’s why we chose the Aleris alloy right away,” underlines the Metall- und Service Center manager.

SELFRIDGES GLISTENS IN THE HEART OF BIRMINGHAM’S BULLRING
There are few buildings in the world today that still hold such fascination for onlookers as the iconic Selfridges department store in Birmingham.
Since its completion in September 2003, visitors have fl ocked to England’s second largest city to see this unique architectural highlight.
Its curved shape accentuated by a metallic skin made up of 16,000 highly polished and slightly convex aluminum discs, has won the architects several prestigious awards including the RIBA Award for Architecture in 2004. “It took more than three years of experimenting with many different materials, shapes and means of fastening before the design was fi nal-ized.” John Champion, Project Manager at façade specialists James & Taylor, comments. “But fi nally we opted for discs with a diameter of 800 mm made from a slightly modifi ed aluminum alloy – 151EX; with a minor modifi ca-tion in the chemical composition in order to make the discs more weather resistant and optimize their machinability.”

55HX® ALUMINUM BRINGS ABOUT THE SHIP LOOK OF ECOLE NATIONALE SUPÉRIEURE MARITIME (ENSM)
The shape of the ENSM building and its position parallel to the quay, as well as the metal texture of the façade all bring to mind a ship on high seas. At night, the lights arranged in the space between the 2 translucent skins turn the vessel into a lantern.
When designing the new Ecole Nationale Supérieure Maritime (ENSM) training school for future offi cers in the French navy, AIA Associés set itself the challenge of considering the entire school in the spirit of a “school boat”.
Although the immense building stands seven fl oors tall (and 100 m wide), it remains elegant and light due to the austere style and the metal lattice work which envelopes it from the ground to the sky.
Anodized aluminum was the natural material of choice for the envelope: as well as being corrosion-resistant, which is essential when close to the shore, it also emphasizes the metallic look of a ship’s hull.
Aleris supplied 55HX® aluminum which was afterwards perforated and continuously anodized in two bronze tones. Eventually, when forming the 2 mm thick aluminum into large panels, Alupic, the façade specialist, experienced exceptional fl atness even as the material was perforated more than 50 %.
