Why does fall always seem to suddenly appearbefore us in a dizzying, yet wonderful, rush ofevents and activities?

This year is no exception.

First, a past event. Thank you to all who attendedBartow at Avery's on September 10. It was anunparalled opportunity to see many words of RickBartow and gain a glimpse into his life, hisinfluences and his artistry. We sincerelyappreciate Bill Avery opening his home andcollection to our Council.

Second, two new events for members are coming up inNovember. On November 9, a community celebration for anew Center for Contemporary Native Art (CCNA) exhibit andon November 15, more Bartow in a program co-sponsored withthe Northwest Art Council. See details in this ALERT.

Third, events in the community. Of great interest is the Crow'sShadow Institute of the Arts (CSIA) show at the Hallie FordMuseum of Art in Salem: Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts at25, September 16-December 22. The exhibit features 75 printsdrawn from the Crow's Shadow Print Archive. Included areworks by 50 Native and non-Native artists who have worked atCSIA, including Rick Bartow, Pat Boas, Joe Feddersen, EdgarHeap of Birds, James Lavadour, Truman Lowe, Lillian Pitt,Wendy Red Star, Storm Tharp, and Marie Watt, amongothers. willamette.edu/arts/hfma/exhibitions/

NAAC is looking at the feasibility of a day trip to thisshow, so stay tuned.

If you are in Central Oregon, Raven Makes Gallery in Sistershas two noteworthy exhibits. On October 21, artists from CapeDorset will present Inuit and Alaska sculptures. On October 27-29, Zuni carvers and painters Jayne Quam, Kandis Quam andElroy Natachu, Jr. will be there for a three day show andexhibit. For more information see:www.ravenmakesgallery.com.

Wisdom of the Elders presents Native Wisdom, a filmshowcase at OMSI on November 13 that highlights howOregon Native Communities respond to a changingenvironment. For more information go to:http://nativewisdomfilmscreening.brownpapertickets.com.

NOVEMBER 9TH INTERWOVEN RADIANCE

The members of the Native American Art Council are invited toattend the reception for the opening of CCNA InterwovenRadiance, Thursday, November 9, at 6 p.m., Stevens Room.

Organized by Tlingitartist and weaver LilyHope, this upcomingexhibition inthe Museum's Center for Contemporary Native Artwill celebrate the artisticachievements and livingvitality of Chilkat andRavenstail Weavers ofthe Northwest Coast. Theexhibit willfeature Clarissa Rizal's Resilience Robe, as well as herdaughter Lily Hope's Heritage Robe. The exhibit will alsoinclude a series of Ravenstail robes from Teri Rofkar. And, also a robe called Weavers Across the Waters, acommunity-woven robe including over forty weavers from theNW Coast and Canada, all of whom contributed an originalweaving to the full-size robe.

The CCNA Exhibit opens to the public Saturday, November 11,2017 and runs to June 24, 2018.

NAAC is one of the sponsors of the exhibit.

NAAC JUNE 13TH ANNUAL MEETING

Preceded by hors d'oeuvres andsocializing, The Native American ArtCouncil held their annual meeting at theMuseum on June 13, 2017. PresidentPatty Prado, introduced Bill Ray, a NAACmember and a member of The KlamathTribes, who gave the blessing. The minutes of the June 2016 AnnualMeeting were approved, and the slate ofofficers for the 2017-2018 year werepresented by Liz Lambert on behalf of theNominating Committee. The followingofficers were unanimously elected: President Patty PradoVice-President Kathleen MarquartSecretary Judy LyonsTreasurer Jan Berger Patty Prado presented the Annual Report, and reviewed theCouncil's many activities for the past year. (Copies of thisreport were distributed to attendees, and can be obtained bycontacting a Board member.) She also gave a special thankyou to each of the Board members who have helped theCouncil have a successful year. Stephanie Feeney provided a handout detailing the books anddates of the Reading Circle meetings for next year. (See thisinformation in another part of this ALERT.)

The Council was honored towelcome Brenda Malloy,Cherokee Nation, whose workis on exhibit in the Center forContemporary Native Art.Brenda thanked the Councilfor their part in bringing herwork, and that of her friendand colleague, Luzene Hill,Eastern Band Cherokee, to

the Museum. Brenda and Luzenes' work will be on display inthe CCNA through October 29, 2017. Our speaker for the evening was MikeMurawski, Director of Education andPublic Programs for the Museum. Hebegan his talk by recognizing theIndigenous people on whose land theMuseum now stands. Mike reportedthat the posting for the position ofNative American Art Curator will closeJune 30, and the Museum will then setabout finding a curator who best aligns with the Museum'svision for our amazing collection of Native American Art.

Mike then shared the story of hisrecent visit to Juneau for theceremony celebrating thecompletion of the Heritage Robewoven by Tlingit artist andteacher, Lily Hope. The robewas commissioned by theMuseum for our permanentcollection, and honors Hope'slineage of weavers, whichincludes Clarissa Rizal, Lily's

mother, who died in December 2016. Mike spoke of theimportance of continuing to build relationships with NativeAmerican communities and collaborating with Native Americanartists. Judy Lyons, NAAC Secretary

collector BillAvery where

work by Rick Bartow from his entire bodyof art were found in every corner.

Avery spoke about their friendship withanecdotes about Rick and themes andsubjects of the art. Charles Froelick,Bartow's longtime gallerist and LillianPitt, artist, contributed to the stories.

A hand-colored etching, "Big Eagle,"offered by Avery and museum-framed byKatayama was raffled. It was won byAnne Takamoto, Development Directorat NAYA and member of NAAC.

Thank you once again to Sue Henry and Liz Lambert fororganizing a beautiful array of refreshments supplied byvolunteers to help maximize the funds raised for the benefit ofthe Native American Collection at PAM.
