As early as 2013, the FIA Formula 3 European Champi-onship established as the leading young-talent series in international single-seater racing. The FIA’s goal: to reinstall the European Championship as independent series, thus turning Formula 3 once again into an important step on the learning ladder, for the young drivers Thanks to its events being held in the support programme of international top series, the Formula 3 talents are provided the chance of demonstrating their skills on a major stage In the 2014 season, 35 outstanding young-guns from 22 countries as well as twelve teams battled it out on the highest level for the coveted FIA Formula 3 European Championship title The 2014 European Champion Esteban Ocon was being re-warded with a Formula 1 test for the Scuderia Ferrari He also secured the ‘Rookie of the Year’ title, that was awarded for the first time in 2014 The 2014 calendar comprised a total of 11 three-race events in eight European countries Thanks to appearances in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hunga-ry, Italy and the United Kingdom, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship is a truly international race series In addition, the talent pool made its debut at the Moscow raceway, locat-ed not far from Russia’s capital, Seven current or former For-mula 1 GP or test circuits – Silverstone (GBR), Hockenheimring (DEU), Hungaroring (HUN), Spa-Francorchamps (BEL), Red Bull Ring (AUT), Nürburgring (DEU) and Imola (ITA) – were part of the calendar In addition, the calendar also featured

two tradition-rich street circuits: Pau in Southern France and Nuremberg’s Norisring Seven of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship meetings were held in the support programme of DTM and one each in the support programmes of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the FIA World Tour-ing Car Championship (WTCC) and the ACI Racing Week-End And in the tradition-rich Grand Prix at Pau, held in early May, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship even repre-sented the main attraction

NEW ENGINE CONCEPT

For the international Formula 3 sport, the 2014 season repre-sented the beginning of a new era: the engines aren’t based on production engines, any longer, but are designed and produced according to standards defined by the FIA regula-tions as pure race engines In addition to the well-established Mercedes and Volkswagen power units, there is a third en-gine manufacturer involved: Neil Brown Engineering The normally aspirated 2-litre engines are equipped with 28mm air restrictors instead of the 26mm restrictors used in the past These air restrictors have the effect that the engines supplied by the different manufacturers involved have a standardized horsepower output of 177 kw Consequently, the new racing cars for the young talents, equipped for the first time with di-rect injection, now are powered by 240 instead of 210bhp

Furthermore, the new engine generation can be raced clearly longer than the previous one without needing a revision or – more precisely – 10,000 kilometres without having to be revised To date, the engines needed expensive revisions eve-ry 4,000 kilometres The homologation period for the new engine generation lasts up to and including 2017

THE STEPPING STONE TO FORMULA 1

For decades, Formula 3 has been regarded as the ideal step-ping stone to the pinnacle of motor racing, Formula 1 Here, up-and-coming talents do not only acquire valuable on-track experience but also learn how to deal with technical matters Unlike many other categories, Formula 3 does not use control chassis or engines and so, the drivers have the chance of co-operating with their engineers and mechanics to develop and enhance their cars within the limits of the technical regulations Formula 1 World Champions Sebastian Vettel, Jenson But-ton, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen, Jacques Villeneuve, Damon Hill, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna, to name just a few exam-ples from the last three decades, all learned their trade in Formula 3 before advancing to the pinnacle of motor racing And 18 of the 22 drivers on the grid of the 2014 Formula 1 season also raced in Formula 3 before advancing to F1 In

2014 Russia’s Daniil Kvyat, who contested the 2013 FIA F3 European Championship, secured a GP-driver seat and had a strong debut in F1 Max Verstappen, third in the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship, also contests the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship season After only one year in car racing and Formula 3 respectively, he was signed as GP driver and becomes the youngest F1 World Champion-ship driver in the history of the sport, in 2015 But for a suc-cessful Formula 3 driver, F1 isn’t the only step on the motor rac-ing ladder: Jamie Green and Daniel Juncadella, for instance, continued their careers in DTM after having won the Formula 3 Euro Series title Former Formula 3 driver Pascal Wehrlein entered the DTM 2013 and became the youngest race win-ner ever one year later For his good results he is rewarded as back-up driver for the Mercedes Formula 1 squad in 2015 Paul Di Resta also moved up to the most popular international touring-car series as Formula 3 Champion to win the DTM title – after four years – and make it to Formula 1, afterwards But even finishing as a runner-up does not prevent from being succesfull in DTM: After two overall second places in Formula 3, Marco Wittmann became DTM champion in 2014 In early 2015, last seasons s Formula 3 competitors Lucas Auer and Tom Blomqvist also graduated into DTM And there also are quite a number of former successful Formula 3 drivers who shine in endurance racing, today: such as Benoît Tréulyer, Marcel Fässler and André Lotterer – all three-time Le Mans

winners (2011, 2012, 2014) and winners of the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship title And Brandon Hartley or Harry Tincknell who finished fifth in the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship also currently are racing prototypes

THREE DAYS OF ACTION

Just as it was the case the year before, every race weekend of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season also began on Friday with a practice session of nearly two

hours, cut into two halves by a five-minute break Two 20-min-ute qualifying sessions were held on Friday and Saturday afternoon, respectively The first race was contested on Satur-day morning, the second and third rounds of the race meet-ings usually were contested on Sunday The race distance amounted to some 100 kilometres and a maximum of 35 minutes, respectively In addition, every race weekend fea-tured three obligatory presentation ceremonies as well as an autographing session with all the drivers

Drei Fragen an Lucas Auer

sechs Rennen in Folge.
