Every year, the United States generates approximately 230 million tons of “trash”--about 4.6 pounds per person per day. Less than one-quarter of it is recycled; the rest is incinerated or buried in landfills. With a little forethought, we could reuse or recycle more than 70 percent of the landfilled waste, which includes valuable materials such as glass, metal, and paper. This would reduce the demand on virgin sources of these materials and eliminate potentially severe environmental, economic, and public health problems

CERTIFICATIONCertification audits products and ingredients to verify a company’s use of healthy

materials and eco-intelligent design. It is a multi-attribute eco-label that assesses a

product’s safety to humans and the environment and design for future life cycles.

The program provides guidelines to help businesses implement the Cradle to Cradle

framework, which focuses on using safe materials that can be disassembled and

recycled as technical nutrients or composted as biological nutrients. Unlike single-

attribute eco-labels, MBDC’s certification program takes a comprehensive approach

to evaluating the design of a product and the practices employed in manufacturing the

product. The materials and manufacturing practices of each product are assessed in

five categories:

Finding a SolutionWhile walking to work the creative director of MBDC conducted a

study to see how much trash he could pick up while walking from

his car to work.

This is what he found:

Here for – 12 years About 1/3 of the cigarettes bought are discarded into the environment. - When cigarette butts break down they release toxic chemicals.

Here for – unknown Contains Chemicals such as phthalates, retardants, and BPA. - 73.9 million lbs are spread throughout the world each year. - In recent study 92% of sea birds ingested plastic.

Here for 80 – 100 years The US generates about 2 million tons of aluminum each year - Recycling aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy used to make alum cans

Here for – 6 months If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we could save about 25 million trees each year.

Here for – 1,000,000 years In the U.S. about 13 tons of glass waste are generated each year. Using recycled glass reduces air pollution by about 20 percent.

FIRST YEAR OF SCHOOL

A CREATIVE GUIDE FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS

Welcome to your first day at the New England Institute of Art. The school that teaches you how to “Bring your ideas to life.”

It’s finally time to start jumping into some professional design programs. Important: It is impossible to master these programs in class. Playing and finding tutorials is the best way to become an Adobe Master.

It’s time to buckle down and get some real world experience. Important: When you are looking for your first internship find a place that best fits you and your interests. Really take some time to research all of your options.

Congratulations You made it through your first two years of art school. Hold on really tight because the next two years are going to be a crazy ride!

Tips: This is the time to prove that you can fit with this company. Remember to stay VERY organized and ahead of the pack. Don’t be afraid to mess up and ask questions every now an

I’d probably guess that your tired of writing papers at an art school. One thing that you might not know is by having good written communication skills, its gonna make you a lot more valuable to employers.

I bet that you didn’t think you would be taking any photography classes. This class shows you how to take your own professional photos so you don’t have to use others. Note: Never steel photos

Welcome to your second year! In this year you are going to learn more in depth principals to graphic design. You will still be taking some drawling classes but trust me their just gonna make your life easier.

NEIA clubs are an amazing opportunity to collaborate with your fellow students. Joining a club also gives you a change to work on projects without the stressful atmosphere in a classroom.

Books are a wonderful tool for design. There are a number of resources out there that teach you a lot about certain areas of design. Note: If you want to be better than everybody else than you gotta do more.

Reminder: Graphic Design is a very expensive major. Expect a lot of money on new tools throughout the next four years.

While your doing your internship learn to connect with the people around you. Use social media to connect and share with other designers that your either know or want to know. Remember: always post things that you are passionate about.

Ring! Ring! It’s your internship creative director calling you to tell you that they would you to be a part of their team. All of that hard work has finally payed off.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your finally finished with school. Now go out there and do what you love!

Eeek! The first broken hard drive. Trust me this is not going to be the first time that this happens. Soak in the pain and take it as a learning experience. Important: Save your work on a number of different drives.
