She has a zest for life and is always the first one to try new things. Unfortunately, things have not always been easy for Alexa. As a child, she began the battle of a life-time when she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age nine. Alexa’s disease took a drastic turn in her twenties when she went into kidney failure. “My kidneys began shutting down. There were times when I could barely walk from all the dehydration,” Alexa reflects on her difficult journey. “I received a kidney transplant eight years ago. After that, I still had complications and needed a pancreas transplant.” After receiving a life-saving pancreas transplant in 2011, Alexa was relieved to learn that she could receive all her follow-up treatments locally at the Infusion Center at Norman Regional. “I had a rough time recovering from the transplant. After the surgery, I still needed weekly infusions of antibiotics and fluids. I was glad I could receive quality care in the community where I live and work.” Your donations purchased four mobile recliners for the Infusion Center so patients, like Alexa, have a comfortable place to rest during treatments. Your gifts also equipped our Infusion Center with top-of-line medical equipment to better care for patients. Alexa is grateful to you for helping make her experience easier. “Today, I am considered free of diabetes,” Alexa says victoriously. “I am thankful for everyone who has helped me along the way.” Alexa receives weekly treatments at Norman Regional’s Infusion Center.

Jeanine Rainwater Inspires Others to GiveJeanine cared for her ailing mother for several years. Every Thursday night, she would bring home dinner to her mother. This past year, Jeanine’s mother passed away. When Jeanine learned that her gift to the Foundation would help improve the quality of care for patients, she decided to take the $10 she spent every Thursday on dinner for her mother and give $10 every week to the Foundation in her mother’s memory.

An employee dropped by the Foundation office to turn in her pledge card. She said that it was the first time she had ever given to the Foundation. When asked what inspired her to give, she shared Jeanine’s story.

New Program May Save Your LifeIn an emergency, a Vial of Life assists medical personnel in administering the right treatment

If you have a medical emergency and are unable to communicate, would paramedics be able to access your medical history? The Vial of Life provides lifesaving information in emergencies. It will speak for you when you are unable to speak for yourself. The Vial is an oversized prescription pill bottle with a form for you to fill out detailing your medical history. This includes allergies, chronic diseases, and medications.

Place it in your refrigerator where paramedics have been trained to find it. This life-saving program is made possible by your gifts to the Foundation.

You can find a video and more details about how you can get a free Vial of Life at NormanRegional.com/VialOfLife
