• Alexander III of Macedon or also known as Alexander The Great was king of Macedon, a state in the north eastern region of Greece.

• Born in Pella on 20 or 21st of July 356 BC.

• Alexander was tutored by Aristotle, a philosopher.

• In 336 BC he took over for his father Philip II of Macedon after he was assassinated

• By the age of thirty he was the creator of one of the

largest empires in ancient history, stretching from the

Ionian Sea to the Himalayas.

• He was undefeated in battle and is considered

one of the most successful commanders of all time.

• Alexander broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles.

• Most memorable battles were of Issus and Gaugamela.

• He defeated the Persian king Darius III and seized the whole Persian Empire. The Macedonian Empire now stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River.

• He invaded India in 326 BC, but was turned back by his troops.

• Alexander began his ruling by eliminating any potential rivals to the throne. This includes his cousin, the former Amyntas IV, who was executed.

• Alexander also had two Macedonian princes killed. Along with having Alexander Lyncestes spared.

• Olympias had Cleopatra Eurydice and her daughter Europa (Philip’s daughter also) burned alive. Once Alexander found out he was extremely angry with his mother.

• Alexander also asked for Attalus to be murdered. He was the commander of the advance guard of the army in Asia Minor. Attalus insulted Alexander and he thought he was too dangerous to leave alive.

• Alexander died at age 32 on either the 10 or 11th of June 323 BC.

• Alexander died in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar II, in Babylon.

• He developed a fever, which got worse and worse, that then lead into Alexander not being able to speak.

• His death was so sudden that when the reports of his death got to Greece they didn’t instantly believe that it was true.
