LAST WEEKS MEETING AT THE GOLF CLUB - 12 – 7 -17
Great to have Rob Chaffe as our Chairman for the evening. Rob opened the meeting and new
International Director Lynda Robertson proposed an International Toast to the Rotary Club of Club of
Mingoria. Today, 12 July, Malala Yousafzai, the youngest person to receive a Nobel Peace Prize, celebrates
her 21st birthday. Malala was born in Minigora in the Swat Valley of northern Pakistan which became under
the rule of the Taliban in 2008. The Taliban made its opposition to a proper education for girls a cornerstone
of its terror campaign.
Malala spoke out about the injustice of life under the Taliban
particularly regarding the right to an education. In 2012, 15-year-
old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban while on
a bus heading home from school. Malala survived the attack and
continued to campaign for the right for all children to have an
education.
In 2014, Malala at age 17, was named a Nobel Peace Prize
winner.
Malala’s father, Ziauddin Yousafzai was a member of the Rotary
Club of Mingoria in Swat which was established in June 2013.
Projects have included purchasing new equipment for a local hospital, a water filtration plant and
establishing a mobile clinic to supply prosthetic limbs to victims of bombs.
Ziauddin Yousafzai said, “I dream of a time when we will go back to Swat, our dream valley, and I will ask
Malala to join our Rotary club."
Chairman Rob acknowledged the great contribution the late Roy Fox had
made to Rotary and to this Club in
particular.
President David welcomed everyone,
especially our guests, Helen and Ian Gibb.
Rob then asked for reports:-
David Strongman reported the wood raffle is going well and
suggested we should ensure that the customer who buys a ticket is
given their half of the ticket.
Rob reported the Board had given the go ahead for the Phoenix Project. The project is to assist with co-
operation with other Groups in our area and build up trust with the local Authorities. Funding to be used to
start projects. Aim is to work together to achieve better results.
For his “3 Minuter” Rob spoke to some slides of the Tour de France bike race and the America’s Cup Yacht
race. He briefly described the history of the America’s Cup and how the boat design and performance had
changed/improved over the years. He mentioned Sweden,s boat doing speeds of up to 40 knots. He
showed some of the New Zealand vs. U.S.A. race which New Zealand won. Their boat was manned by
some Aussie crew.
After the break Rob introduced our Guest Speaker Senior
Sargeant Greg Paul. Greg heads up the Victoria Police Search
and Rescue Squad. The Squad has a strength of 20 members to
cover the whole of Victoria and provides specialist assistance
beyond the scope of general policing. Greg said he grew up in
Alexandra and his father Colin was once a member of our
Rotary Club. He said he enjoyed working from Marysville and
he supported Rob’s Phoenix project. He was honoured to be
nominated for Policeman of the Year Award.

Greg spoke to a slide show and gave us a terrific insight into some of the work they do. Some things he
mentioned were:-
A lot of their jobs included underwater diving. Most times unpleasant.
With their current Hi-tech equipment, can dive to 50 metres and can hear and speak, but is usually
difficult to see.
Investigate vehicles and evidence recoveries.
Do a lot of work and training on Lake Eildon, and often
use Side Scan Sonar for underwater detection.
Some other areas of their work includes tree rescues,
cave, cliff, snow accidents, and suicides.
Greg said he would like to increase the size of his squad and
provide more assistance to local police and other emergency
services including Customs.
Chairman Rob thanked Greg on our behalf and made the
Angel Flight presentation.
Sargeant John Sharwood
fined Lindsay for going
on holidays, Pres. David for co-opting the Sarg. to a Board meeting,
David Strongman for his “Castrol” jacket and also blocking his
chimney, At least you know the smoke alarms work David!! Steve
Costley for disrupting the traffic in Downey Street, and Brian Dillon
had to pay for Judy’s birthday.
President David won the raffle.
President David said the Swap Meet Committee needed some
assistance, reminded next weeks meeting is at the Secondary College,
and thanked Steve Costley for standing in as Secretary in Toms
absence. He thanked the Golf Club ladies and all for attending.
He closed the meeting.

Exercise for People Over 50
1. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
2. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as
you can. Try to reach a full minute, and thenrelax.
3. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb
potato bags. Then try 50-lb potato bags, and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in
each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)
4. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.
