Making a Difference… From Your President What a year 2009 has been! Thank you to each and every one of you—you have helped to make this year an AMAZING one for the Alexandria Jaycees!

This year, we have:

» Woken up before the sun was up on Saturday mornings to set up yard sales;

» Raised money for worthy community projects;

» Run miles each week in our quest to become healthier;

» Competed in (bar) decathlons;

» Fired a gun (safely, of course);

» Grilled hundreds of burgers and “breakfast” dogs;

» Unloaded lots and lots of food from the Capitol Area Food Bank;

» Two-stepped; and

» Had FUN, FUN, FUN!!

I am very proud to have served as your President this year. Thank you for making my job much easier by stepping up to chair projects and regularly volunteering. I would also like to thank the 2009 Board of Directors—you all are incredible and I am so fortunate to serve with such professionals. Thank you also to Stephanie Wallis who has done a great job designing the newsletter and many of our membership materials! THANK YOU!

We still have one month to continue “Making a Difference” in 2009 in Alexandria! How? Sell Christmas trees to raise money for the Holiday Shopping Tour. Escort a child around Target and help him or her pick out the “perfect” gift for a family member. Wrap some gifts for needy families. The Alexandria Jaycees have a lot to offer!

Finally, give the gift that keeps on giving this holiday season—an Alexandria Jaycees membership! Don’t know what to get that friend or co-worker? A Jaycees membership is a great fit for even the hardest to buy for!

Again, thank you for your efforts! I look forward to an even better year under the leadership of Harry and the 2010 Board of Directors!

In Jaycees Spirit, Amy

Thank You!Thank you to our 2009 Sponsors of the Holiday Shopping Tour!

Let’s Go to City HallWant to see your government in action? Join us as we go to an Alexandria City Council meeting and learn more about what is happening in our city!

The Alexandria City Council holds their legislative meetings at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Our chapter will attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 8th at Alexandria City Hall, 301 King Street, in Old Town. Jaycee members will meet at 6:50 p.m. outside of the Council chambers. All Jaycee members will be asked to wear their Jaycee nametags and sit together. Contact Amy at [email protected] if you plan to attend.

Networking Opportunities Abound! The Alexandria Jaycees have been invited to join the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce at their last Professional Networking Breakfast on Thursday, December 10th from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at the Belle Haven Country Club. Start your morning off right by promoting your business (and the Jaycees!) and meeting new contacts!

Alexandria Jaycee members are welcome to attend at the Chamber member price of $25.

It’s a beautiful setting—the Club does a marvelous job of decorating for the holidays! To register for the breakfast, go to www.alexchamber.com. If you plan to attend, contact Amy at [email protected].

Toy Sorting for the Kids!Come on out and help us make an Alexandria kid’s holiday bright and cheery like it’s supposed to be. On December 19, we will be helping the Community Partners for Children sort and organize toys that will later be distributed to deserving children throughout the city. Yes, it is a Saturday and yes, it starts at 8 a.m. at George Washington High School (1005 Mt. Vernon Avenue). But trust me, if I, the poster child for non-early morning people, can agree to chair this even—my very first one ever—you can come and help sort toys. We take all Jaycees and friends, even sleepwalkers. We expect to finish around 11:30 a.m. Please e-mail me at [email protected] or go to our Meetup.com site for more information.

Jennifer Browne, Chairperson

Thanks from the Carpenter’s ShelterWe’d love to share a letter of thanks that we have received for a recent project lead by Mary Moschella!

“Mary,The kitchen looks tremendous! Thank you so much to all of you for all of your hard work! What a difference! We are so grateful— especially for the new can opener. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and will be back to see us soon! –Allison Clausen, Carpenter’s Shelter

Join the Bar Decathlon TeamWhile the Queens decided to dress in Drag for their Halloween special, the Jaycees had a great time playing bingo at Freddie’s Beach Bar as the fifth installment of the Bar Decathlon events. The very first round, President Amy Tenhouse declared that she was going to win that game because she wanted the space invaders prize. And sure enough, she won! As did Laura Murphy and Blair Hedgepeth. Thank you to all that came out to the event!

Does this sound like fun? Join the Bar Decathlon team at the next event! The Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse holds an annual Christmas movie festival where they show several popular holiday films. This year the event will be Sunday, December 13th from 11:45 a.m.–10:45 p.m. The cost is $8.00. Pay once and stay all day or leave and return later. They offer our full restaurant fare and table side service for the entire festival. The day will end with the feature presentations: It’s a Wonderful Life and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Scheduled Santa appearance from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be Gingerbread House Making as well. You can RSVP for this event through Meetup.com and Facebook. We look forward to seeing you out!

Supplies NeededWe still need supplies for the Holiday Shopping Tour. Anyone willing to bake some extra cookies for the party? How about donating some water bottles or juice boxes? We can always use tape, gift bags, gift boxes and wrapping paper as well! Please contact Diana at [email protected] to let us know what you can help us out with. Remember that the Holiday Shopping Tour is on December 12th—so we need donations as soon as possible!

Gobble ‘til You Wobble“ So once in every year we throng, Upon a day apart, To praise the Lord with feast and song, In thankfulness of heart.”

– Arthur Guiterman, The First Thanksgiving

On Saturday, November 21st, the Jaycees held the first annual Pot Luck Thanksgiving. There was plenty of good food, good football, and good fellowship. As we enter the holiday season, let us remember to give thanks for friends, old and new, and the many blessings we each have. Thank you to all of the talented chefs and master bakers in the Jaycees for the incredible spread for this event. And thank you to each Jaycee for bringing your uniqueness to each meeting and event, making Alexandria the best chapter in the state.

Blair Hedgepeth Director, Membership Activation

From the Membership Team…Happy December to all Jaycees!

November flew by fast folks and we are now in the last month of 2009!

I can honestly say that we have succeeded in “Making a Difference” this year. I can see the difference in our chapter itself, in our community around us and in our chapter members just from when I took office in January. I see a stronger chapter, even happier & fun-loving members, and the Alexandria Community has been enhanced and improved through the various projects we’ve run this year. Thanks to all of you for your hard work and commitment to Jaycee causes & events.

During the next few weeks—take some time for yourself and reflect on this past year. Thank those who have helped you along the way. Rest up and celebrate the holidays merrily. Think of some things you’d like to do differently next year in the Jaycees. Maybe you’d like to come to more events. Maybe you’d like to lead an event. Our organization’s purpose is essentially this: we want to make better leaders and citizens of you, our members. It’s what we’re best at doing—making you a better person and a better leader in your world.

Thanks so much for all the fun we’ve had in November! We enjoyed M-Night at King St. Blues (Kingstowne), we “Explored Old Town”, we “Gobbled ‘til we Wobbled”, and had fun pretending to be pool sharks at Bungalow Billiards at our 6th leg of the Bar Decathlon. Thanks Blair Hedgepeth for all the hard work you’ve given us all year in the socials. You are always outdoing yourself.

Events to come:Dec. 5th 2nd Annual Jaycees Holiday Season Soiree! There will be an ugly Christmas sweater competition as well as other fun things to enjoy at the party. Thanks to Mike Gallagher for chairing this one for us!

Dec. 13th Christmas Movie Festival. This is taking place at the Arlington Cinema ‘n Drafthouse. Blair is leading us on this adventure of a Christmas movie classics marathon.

Again, thanks everyone for a fabulous year. You have given me much to be proud of. It has been a pleasure to serve you as Membership VP this year.

State Convention SuccessOn November 13–15, several members of the Alexandria Jaycees traveled to Richmond for the Fall State Convention and our chapter came away the big winner!

Three members—Blair Hedgepeth, Jennifer Jackson and Kathie Moh—attended a Convention for the first time and participated in the “First Timers” program. They collected signatures of other participants and took some crazy pictures with former and current state officers. Blair took home the gold and was the overall First Timer program champion!

In the Competitions, we again had three participating members—Harry and Sally Schroeder and Jennifer Jackson—in Jaycee Jeopardy. Sally won the Competition and is now able to compete in New Orleans at the 2010 National Convention.

At the Saturday night banquet, past Virginia Jaycees President (2005) and Life Member, Beth Fujishige, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the Outstanding Young Virginian Celebration. Our chapter saw our nominee, Tyler Brummond from Alexandria take home an Outstanding Young Virginian Award. Tyler, a member of the US Marine Corps serving in Afghanistan, was recognized for his work in the community through the Carpenter’s Shelter and Westminster Church. In addition, Stephanie Slaven, an eighth grader in Alexandria, received the Outstanding Future Leader award for her accomplishments in school.

Three of our members also took home some very important hardware of their own! Patty Lee Hall and Lea Anne Chapman received Virginia Life Membership awards in recognition of their dedication to the Alexandria Jaycees and Virginia Jaycees. In addition, Beth Fujishige was honored with a Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senatorship, which recognizes her outstanding service to the Junior Chamber organization on the local, state and national level. Congratulations on these well-deserved honors!

Finally, our night wouldn’t have been complete without a little more recognition for the Alexandria Jaycees and its AWESOME members. Our chapter received the following awards for the 3rd quarter:

» Presidential Award of Appreciation–Romney Hogaboam

» Presidential Award of Appreciation Local Officer–Diana Karczmarczyk

» Outstanding Local President–Amy Tenhouse

» Business Area of Opportunity Project of the Quarter–Alexandria Birthday Celebration

» Individual Area of Opportunity Project of the Quarter–Cycling Series

And last but certainly not least… #1 Chapter in the State–Alexandria Jaycees!

Everyone in attendance at the State Convention had a great time! Mark your calendars now for the Year-End Convention in Virginia Beach on January 29–31!

get involved.Our Dare to Dream event (January 23, 2010) is in full swing! Now’s your chance to get involved.

We are in need for people to host a dinner in their home, so if you like to entertain but never do, this is the perfect excuse. If this sounds like something you are interested in, please contact Christine Flinton ([email protected]) about hosting a dinner. If you don’t have time or space but wish to be a guest at someone else’s dinner, please let Ms. Flinton know- she’ll match you up with a dinner near you.

As a dinner host, you can either cook or order delivery and it can be as casual or formal as you’d like. You need to be able to host 10 people in your home, however. You will not be reimbursed for your dinner costs—this is YOUR donation!

As a guest, the cost to attend a dinner is $25.00. All money collected will go directly to Camp Jaycee. We are inviting all hosts and dinner guests to attend the second part of the fundraiser which will be an “after-party” with drinks, dessert, and dancing at a private party in Old Town Alexandria. We will also have raffle items to give away throughout the evening. Our after-party will be free to dinner guests and hosts, and $10 for others. Tickets for the after-party will be sold after January 9.

If you are lacking culinary skills, but you’re the “person who gets things” please help us in acquiring raffle items. If this is your area of expertise, please contact Lillian Cheng ([email protected]).

There are plenty of other ways to help behind the scenes—the need for business sponsorships, for example, so if you want to do something but are just not sure what, please contact me at [email protected].
