Trying times. An elusive new normal. A challenging beginning of the year where Covid 19 statistics began to have names and faces too close to home, of too many loved ones. My condolences to you personally and the community at large. The lockdown, a necessary discomfort finds drivers particularly agitated by the curtailed mobility. Leaving the home becomes a delicious special treat. Few jams. Few traffic hassles. No school run. Long distance drivers do stop to smell the roses along the highways and byways and forage for some Zumbani for f riends and neighbours. Millions of plants all over the show. Natures balm. An undeniable divine message that Zimbos are indeed a resilient

and enormously favoured people.

In this edition the all new Toyota Starlet, for those who do not know, is actually based on a Suzuki Baleno. Winky D referred to the older version in song as a love nest having been caught by a police officer “ari mujagwa achipa chimoko chake rudo” (in the car giving his girl some love). The Starlet is Toyota great offering it at a very reasonable price for those who own the old Etios, it is deemed better than the Yaris and outshines many direct rivals f rom other

brands. Zimbabwe’s must gear itself for a treat with this new budget superstar!

YOU may have been socialized to believe that nothing beats the Toyota Hilux. You may have been made to believe that nothing is second to the Hilux except the Ford Ranger. You may have begrudgingly accepted that Isuzu probably sells better that the Hilux and Ranger because it’s as tough as a nail and does the job with without any qualms.

The three vehicles have been becoming luxurious in their own way. Now enter a truck that is more humongous than the three, is more comfortable and is way cheaper. Most of all it has some super gizmos and is has extra safety features than

the traditional three. It simply is the value champion in the truck segment

Like it or not it will shake your allegiances. This is what this truck will do in Zimbabwe. Not without reason, of course. You cannot run away f rom the fact that it is being sold by Zimoco a reputable dealership with heritage and brand equity. This will be a major selling point for the P Series.

If you are the kind of buyer who likes to fish in all the waters so as to get the best catch, then your list of alternatives has gained yet another member. One that warrants serious

consideration, the GWMs P-Series.

Just by looking at it, this beast ushers in a new direction for the brand. From the f ront, the model is edgy, contemporary – with an undisputable air of beefiness which is non-negotiable for a player in this category.

Of course, the kerbside appeal of your P-Series will depend on the specification you opt for. There are two versions: Commercial and Passenger. The former can be had in single-cab and double-cab, while the Passenger is served exclusively as a double-cab.

Then there are the model grades, with SX and DLX serving on the Commercial side, while the more generously-equipped LS and LT specifications can be found in the Passenger models. Two-wheel or four-wheel drive can be had, in either manual (six-speed) or automatic (eight-speed).

Even in the basic expression of the breed you still get cruise control and park distance control, as well as 17-inch alloys.

The safety bases are covered, with minimum specification including electronic stability control, traction control, dual f ront airbags and ISOFIX mountings. Higher grade versions get side and curtain

airbags too.

Only a two-litre, turbocharged - diesel unit producing 120kW and 400Nm is available on all models. It might seem less in the real world but with new technology you will not feel any difference.

From about 100km/h to 120km/h, the shove seems acceptable. The automatic transmission sourced f rom gearbox specialists ZF seems to better complement the power source, making lighter work of low speed activity.

With this pairing, the P-Series is undoubtedly more enjoyable to pilot. Range-topping LS models are generously equipped with features such as a touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control.

Pick the range-topping LS grade and the enjoyment levels spring even higher, into a realm that could easily beat competition. Aside f rom a more assertive exterior presence, the LS also features a cabin appointed with genuinely luxurious

materials and fixtures, in addition to useful driver assistance systems.

You get adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and a 360-degree camera, which proved especially handy over tricky off-road obstacle courses. With 4L and the differential lock at the rear axle engaged, the P-Series, with its 232mm ground clearance, put in a good show through muddy ruts.

Driver and passenger get electrically adjustable seats (heated) and a nine-inch central

infotainment system dominates the fascia.

This is an impressive product overall especially considering pricing. The flagship model, for example, with every conceivable bell, whistle and flute you could want, comes in at US$47 300. This is considerably less than equivalent top tier versions f rom other stables. You can get into the entry-level, SX double-cab (4x2, manual) for US$35 500.

IT could turn out to be Zimbabwe’s new Superstar

The Starlet, for those who do not know, is actually a Suzuki and has been available in South Af rica for a couple of years as the Baleno. The grey imported Toyota Starlet was once what Honda Fit is to Zimbabwe some years ago. Winky D actually has a song on the little cozy vehicle. In that song Winky D talks of it as a love nest.

How one turns such a miniature car into a love nest baffles me but anything is possible in this artistic world. In the song he is pleading for f reedom with the Officer after he is caught “ari mujagwa achipa chimoko chake rudo” (in the car giving his girl some love). The first time I listened to the song I got lost because I did not know what a Jagwa was. Jagwa is street lingo for car

While automotive alliances are clearly back in vogue as manufacturers seek to slash research and development costs, the products of modern platform sharing are very often distinctly

styled (think supposed “twins” such as the Aygo and Peugeot 108, the Supra and BMW Z4 and the latest-generation Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50). While they are near-identical under the skin, they are set apart by styling, each featuring a unique (brand-specific) upper body.

The Starlet is a good car and Toyota is offering it at a very reasonable price. In South Af rica the range starts at R204 900(In Zimbabwe it is likely to cost double which is about US$26000 due to duties and taxes), which is basically where the Etios also sat at when it was discontinued last year. This makes the car a good option for Toyota fans who own the old Etios. It is a better car. In fact, it outshines many direct rivals f rom other brands and I will even go as far as saying the Starlet is a better proposition than Toyota’s own Yaris which sits above it in the brand’s line-up.

It could turn out to be Zimbabwe’s new budget superstar!

Still, the long-in-the-tooth Etios hatchback – a particularly

strong seller in South Af rica since its arrival back in 2012 – needed replacing and the Starlet fit the bill. In fact, it is more spacious, better equipped, more efficient and arguably easier to look at than the Etios, and even comes dangerously close to treading on the toes of the XP150-generation Yaris soldering on in the segment above. It is evident Toyota South Af rica Motors is looking at budget entry level cars more now than ever before. Like it is my custom to say “if South Af rica sneezes motoring wise, Zimbabwe catches the cold”. Our motoring trends are more or less fashioned by what is happening across the Limpopo.

The Starlet employs Suzuki’s familiar K14B engine, with the naturally aspirated 1,4-litre petrol unit sending 68 kW and 130 N.m to the f ront axle via either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. It is a peppy little power plant, with its performance and efficiency amplified by the vehicle’s impressive lack of lard (Toyota lists a kerb weight of just 915 kg, precisely the same as Suzuki’s figure).

It rides comfortably and handles tidily, while the manual model’s feather-light clutch, gear-shift action and steering lend themselves to fuss-f ree low-speed manoeuvres. Rear legroom is particularly impressive, while the luggage compartment measures a claimed 345 litres, almost 100 litres more than that of the Etios hatch.

While the entry-level Xi trim keeps the starting price very respectable (and will likely appeal mostly to fleet buyers, with the mid-tier Xs adding only alloys), the flagship Xr seen here offers a myriad of equipment. The standard features list includes items such as a touchscreen infotainment system (Suzuki’s but with a Toyota graphic on start-up), rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, cruise control and climate control. This variant furthermore upgrades f rom two airbags to six.

So, why would anyone buy the Toyota version over the Suzuki original? Well, considering specification levels appear pretty much equal on comparable variants (Toyota offers five derivatives compared with Suzuki’s three), the Starlet is quite clearly the cheaper car at launch – by as much as R17 000 in the case of the base model, though by a mere R1 400 when it comes to the manual-equipped flagship.

In addition, Toyota SA Motors rightly points out that it probably has the largest dealer network in Southern Af rica and suggests that models wearing its badge, benefit f rom superior resale values too.

The buying public is already leaning heavily towards the Toyota, with the 178 units registered across South Af rica in the final 10 days of September 2020 trouncing the Baleno’s effort of 55 units for the entire month (Suzuki customers prefer the Swift, which managed a strong 533 units, it seems).

As much as Suzuki Auto SA might feel a little (well, very) hard done by under this global arrangement, there is no getting away f rom the fact that the typical, pragmatically minded buyer in this segment will favour the Toyota for the reasons outlined above. It certainly helps that the Starlet’s a markedly more polished product than the Etios, too. In short, Toyota has gained plenty here.

Toyota, to distinguish between the trim levels, named the Starlet models Xi, Xs and Xr. Xi and

Xs derivatives feature a double-DIN (two-tier) audio system with CD/Bluetooth/USB/ AUX functionality, while high-spec Xr models come with an Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integrated touchscreen. Xr Starlets also have a reverse camera linked to the touchscreen.

All Starlet models come equipped with the Toyota Connect telematics system which offer in-car Wi-Fi (through a hotspot) with 15Gb of data compliments of the manufacturer, or in this case, the seller. I am not sure whether these will be applicable to the Zimbabwean market once the vehicle is launched locally.

As a result, the rebadged model will surely – and rather unusually, it must be said – easily outsell the original, any cynicism around badge engineering notwithstanding.

The Starlet is a solid car and Toyota Zimbabwe is likely to offer it at a very good price.

It outshines many direct rivals f rom other brands. I will even go as far as saying the Starlet is a better proposition than Toyota’s own Yaris which sits above it in its brand’s line-up.

If you look at everything available in the South Af rican market in this category and price range, the Starlet is SA’s new budget superstar! Expect the same in Zimbabwe too

V8 TDI engine with 310 kW and 900 NmThe SQ7 and SQ8 introduce a performance stint to the luxury C-SUV segmentNow available in South Africa through a limited, once-off launch opportunity

THIS is mind boggling as other leading brands are moving away f rom diesel engines completely.

Audi presents the SQ7 and the SQ8 with a V8 diesel engine in the high-performance SUV segment. In terms of the suspension, the Audi SQ7 and SQ8 offer many high-tech components. It’s their aggressive and sporty design as well as their connectivity and technology features which rounds off the great delivery package really well. The large S models are now available for sale in South Af rica as part of a limited, once-off TDI engine launch opportunity.

310 kW and 900 Nm of torque: The 4.0 TDI has an easy job with the Audi SQ7 and the Audi SQ8. Making its South Af rican debut, this engine is Audi’s most powerful diesel engine currently available. The twin-turbo V8 accelerates both models f rom… 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

The electronics limit the propulsion at 250 km/h. Depending on the equipment, the SQ7 TDI consumes around 8.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in a combined cycle, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 228 grams per kilometre. For the SQ8 TDI, these figures are 8.3 litres and 217 grams of CO2.

A quickly shifting eight-speed tiptronic and the quattro permanent all-wheel drive put the power of this 4.0 TDI onto the road. A clutch in the automatic transmission engages f reewheeling when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator.

In regular driving operation, the purely mechanical centre differential distributes the drive torque to the f ront axle and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60. If traction decreases at one axle, it directs most of the torque to the other axle – up to 70% to the f ront or up to 85% to the rear axle!!

DRIVEtorque February 2021 | PAGE 10www.drivetorque.com

Page 11: Alfa Romeo Guila ˜ Audi’s most powerful diesel engine ˜ … · 2021. 3. 5. · Alfa Romeo Guila 2021 Toyota Starlet Audi’s most powerful diesel engine Autoworld cares with Isuzu

AUDI provides the SQ7 and SQ8 TDI with the adaptive air suspension sport system which integrates controlled dampers. It is capable of varying the ride height of the body by up to 90 millimetres (vehicle height is 15 millimetres lower than the adaptive air suspension option).

The optional all-wheel steering consists of two components. The f ront axle steering, which has a sporty and direct gear ratio of 13.3:1, increases the vehicle’s agility and maneuverability considerably.

A spindle drive influences the rear wheels: At low speed, it turns them by up to 5 degrees in the opposite direction, which makes it easier to manoeuvre. From a speed of about 60 km/h, it turns them slightly in the same direction for improved stability during fast changes of direction. A much appreciated inbuilt safety facility.

As a central control unit, the electronic chassis platform (ECP) connects the controlled suspension systems, with the exception of all-wheel steering. The driver ultimately experiences this close and lightning-fast coordination as maximum handling precision. Confidently, the driver decides how the controlled suspension components as well as the 4.0 TDI and the tiptronic are to operate via the Audi drive select system.

In anticipation, the driver can choose f rom seven driving profiles:

comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency, exhilarating, all-road, off-road, and individual.

As standard, the Audi SQ7 and SQ8 are fitted with 21-inch Audi Sport wheels with an option to upgrade to 22-inch (for the SQ7) and up to 23-inch (for the SQ8). Brake discs measuring 400mm in diameter are fitted to the f ront axle, with 350mm discs on the rear axle. The red brake calipers feature an S logo on the f ront axle and are standard for both models.

Sporty look: the exterior designThanks to its S-specific details, the special status of the Audi SQ7 and

SQ8 becomes apparently lovely at first glance. The f ront features double slats in the Singlef rame and a distinctly three-dimensional blade in the bumper, while the side air inlets are filled with a honeycomb grid.

At the side, the exterior mirror housings with the brilliant aluminum are a sight for sore eyes. The underbody protection with its powerful design, a honeycomb grid insert, and the four characteristic tailpipes provide highlights at the rear. Some attachments are designed in matte silver, including the f rame of the Singlef rame, which is designed as a wide mask in the SQ8.

If the customer ordered the black styling package, the f rame as well as other exterior parts (roof rails, trim strips on side windows, mirrors and f ront and rear bumpers) are finished in black paint. In addition to this, the extended black styling package adds the Audi rings at the f ront and rear as well as the SQ7 or SQ8 lettering in the radiator grille and on the boot lid in black. A standard panoramic glass sunroof rounds off the exterior design with a touch of class.

SPORTY CHARACTER: INTERIOR AND EQUIPMENTThe elegant sporty look is continued in the spacious interior of the Audi SQ7 and the SQ8 TDI. The sport seats are upholstered with

top-quality Valcona leather and come standard with a heating function in the f ront and memory function for both f ront seats. Their backrests feature S -embossing and colour-coordinated contrasting stitching complements the appearance.

The inlays are made of matt brushed aluminium. The series production scope also includes illuminated door sill trims with aluminium inlays with the S- logo at the f ront. The pedals, the footrest, and the loading sill protector are made of stainless steel.

Upon request, Audi will install S- sport seats plus with integrated head restraints. Their covers are also made of Valcona leather but feature a rhombus pattern and diamond stitching. Arras red is available as a further colour option in addition to the grey and black colour schemes. The S- sport seats can be further refined with ventilation and a delicious massage function.

A third seat row is available for the Audi SQ7. The contour/ambient lighting package, which is also another standard feature on both models, illuminates contours and surfaces in 30 colours that can be adjusted to the driver’s individual preference via the MMI.

NEW COMPUTING POWER: INFOTAINMENT AND CONTROLS

In terms of controls, infotainment, and connectivity, the Audi SQ7 and Audi SQ8 are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The MMI touch response control system integrates two large displays in the

centre of the instrument panel. They have a 10.1-inch and 8.6-inch diagonal measurement respectively, and respond with haptic and acoustic feedback to all finger input. The menu structure makes it easy to control with flat hierarchies. The user can configure the interface of the upper display such that they can follow multiple apps at the same time.

The two S models provide a natural language voice control system as a second control level, which understands many formulations f rom everyday language and accesses the knowledge of the cloud to respond to many requests.

A head-up display that projects important information onto the windshield is available as an option. The standard Audi virtual cockpit plus with S-specific views is

controlled via the multifunction steering wheel and serves as the standard display instrument. The driver can activate different screens, including an “S-Performance” look. It shifts the focus to the rev counter and displays the power output and torque as percentages.

These standard and attractive hardware modules supplement the infotainment portfolio. The Audi smartphone interface embeds iOS and Android smartphones on the MMI display in their native environments Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Audi phone box couples smartphones with the car’s antenna and charges them inductively provided that the phone is equipped with this function. The Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 3D sound is also available and integrates an amplifier that outputs 1,920 watts and actuates up to 23 speakers.

Convenience equipment such as four-zone automatic air conditioning is standard. The HD Matrix LED headlights with dynamic light design (standard on the Audi SQ8) are a further piece of top-of-the-line technology: Thanks to their intelligent regulation, they illuminate the road with maximum brightness and precision in any situation. In the SQ7, Matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals are part of the vehicle offering.

AUDI connect: top-calibre connectivity The services in the Audi connect portfolio offer customized information and intelligent assistance. The SQ7 and SQ8 are equipped with the top infotainment system MMI navigation plus as standard, which exploits the full potential of Audi connect. The navigation system offers satellite images and takes predictions on the development of the traffic situation, weather, parking availability and point of interest search information into account.

If the car is driven by multiple drivers, up to six users can save their individual settings – f rom f requently selected destinations to their preferred lighting – in separate profiles. The data is uploaded to the customer’s myAudi account in the cloud and stored there for their access via the app.

The car adjusts the individual settings when the driver’s door is opened. This convenient personalization feature comes as standard with the Audi SQ7 and the SQ8. The Audi connect functionality

also includes Car2X services which consists of standard safety and service features in the event of damage, breakdown or minor accidents. This functionality (through a built-in emergency button in the vehicle’s roof module) allows an emergency safety or service call to an Audi call centre to support in any event.

Additional functionality, accessible through the MyAudi application, includes remote functions that network the SQ7 and SQ8 TDI with the driver’s smartphone. This includes car finder, remote lock/unlocking, speed and theft alerts, to mention a few.

SMART CHARACTER: THE DRIVING SAFETY SYSTEMSThe assist systems make the driving experience of the Audi SQ7 and the SQ8 a confident and comfortable pleasure. Safety systems such as Audi pre-sense basic are included as an expected standard with a host of other user f riendly assistance systems available.

The adaptive cruise control takes

over steering, accelerating, and decelerating for the driver in different situations. The improved restarting comfort is a new feature: Even after a longer standstill, the adaptive cruise control gets the car to start rolling again if the car in f ront begins moving. It takes only a slight touch for the car to detect that the driver is taking responsibility for steering and automatic lateral guidance can remain active.

The efficiency assist supports a fuel-efficient driving style by notifying the driver as to when it would make sense to take their foot off the gas. Systems such as the intersection assist, rear cross traffic assist, exit warning, and the surround view cameras add to the portfolio.

The SQ7 and SQ8 TDI are now officially available for sale in South Af rica in limited numbers as part of a once-off launch opportunity. We should see a trickle down into Zimbabwe as individuals import them direct as there is no Audi dealership in Zimbabwe.

Driven: Datsun Go

SINCE the introduction of the Go in 2014, more than 32 000 have been sold in Southern Af rica. The bulk of them found across the Limpopo south of Zimbabwe. Interestingly, some 8 000 of those cars came f rom the face lifted range, introduced in late 2018.

With that mid-cycle ref resh came considerable improvements. Aside f rom visual enhancements, more crucial additions such as dual f ront airbags and ABS were added as standard. While the little hatchback has received steady styling, technology and safety improvements over its life, the only available gearbox until recently has been the five-speed manual.

With popular rivals such as the Renault Kwid and Kia Picanto offering two-pedal options, Datsun has seen fit to launch the Go CVT.

Apart f rom a small "CVT" badge affixed to the tailgate, the clutchless Go looks the same as the manual model. Much like the exterior, there have not been many changes to the interior of the Go.

Only the obvious: a new gear selector. One interesting update, however, is the inclusion of a new Alliance Radio seven-inch infotainment system. Much like the

previous touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard, along with Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port. While the previous system was already rather intuitive, the latest example builds upon that, with simplified controls making it even more of a doddle to use.

On the road, the Go CVT comes across as a little more refined than its manual sibling, with the usually vocal 1,2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine seemingly a little more hushed. Engine vibrations appear to have been reduced too, with far fewer disturbances felt through the interior, particularly the steering wheel.

Still, as with the majority of CVTs, the revs surge under enthusiastic acceleration, spilling unwanted engine noise into the cabin.

Interestingly, the CVT-equipped Go produces 7 kW more than the manual derivative, with 57 kW available at 6000 r/min, while the torque figure is unchanged at 104 N.m. Despite the power increase, Datsun claims the new addition to the range is more f rugal, sipping at a claimed 5,0 L/100 km.

On pull away, the CVT leaves the Go feeling a touch lethargic, particularly when compared with

the quicker response of the manual equivalent. However, once up to speed the self-shifting Go keeps up well with traffic. The CVT happily avoids high revs unless input f rom the accelerator pedal instructs it to. Operation of the CVT is via a chunky gear selector. While there's no manual override, there is at least a sport button that allows for slightly more spirited driving.

Besides the new transmission, the CVT-equipped Go boasts another significant feature that the manual variant does not possess: a vehicle stability control (VSC) system and ESC, further improving the vehicle's safety features. Other safety updates see the inclusion of a seatbelt reminder for the f ront passenger, while further peace of mind comes thanks to a six-year/150 000 km warranty.

On the highway, the Go moves with surprising refinement for a car in this segment, with the engine spinning at 2 500 r/min at around 120 km/h, which is commendable for a small-capacity, three-cylinder unit.

With a light clutch and easy-to-operate gearbox, the manual is simple to drive in and around town and CBD and feels more responsive, too. If, however, your commute is a traffic-laden city, and the added safety features appeal to you, the CVT could make a compelling alternative if you already had your heart set on a Go.

Q In a few words describe who Zodwa Mkandla is?A: Business, Personal, Anything? Mmmeee.. Okay, Let’s see now, where do I begin? I was born in a place called Mbembesi, in Zimbabwe, which is about 40kms f rom Bulawayo on the Harare - Bulawayo road. We are called the Fengus. We a very small minority ethnic group in the country. We are rather well known though for having powerful, prominent and delightfully gorgeous, very beautiful girls in Zimbabwe. (She laughs).

I was born in 1972. My mother’s name is Margret Mhlanga. There are 6 of us in the family. I am the second child in the sibling line up. Our eldest my sister is late. I have 3 brothers and 1 sister. I went to Mqwashini Primary School. That’s hard to pronounce, isn’t it …unless it’s your mother tongue because of the clicks? (She giggles)

Mqwashini is down there far away in the bundu there, in the rurals. We used to walk about 30kms distance to school and back each day. It wasn’t really hard then. That’s what we knew. Excellent for fitness. We were super healthy to be able to do that and not get burn out. I love great cars but once a while we just need to park them and walk, to work, the shops, the market, f riends’ houses, in the rain even, for fun, for movement for toning …mmee what do you think? (I think it a novel idea indeed and just nod my head) It

doesn’t mean I don’t have fancy cars. It just means I chose to walk. What you are seeing now is the result of years and years of good walking and good working muscles.

A fine refined product don’t you think? (as she preens to show off her refinedness, and yep I can’t argue that boastful claim) That is where I started f rom the rurals. For Grade 7, I then moved to Harare. I went to Mt. Pleasant High f rom form 1 to Form 3. I then moved back to Bulawayo to St. Columbus to do my form 4. It was back to Harare again to pursue my Diploma Courses. That’s a brief background of my schooling.

Q: What is the path you took to be where you are today?A: I’ve never really carved out a path neither did I really imagine I would get here. Well It’s just that I knew that I did not like my life back then and wanted more, way more. When you grow up in a family that is disadvantaged you start wondering why? Where you are not born in family of money and resources things pass you by.

I felt the unfairness of it all. There were some kids whose social status is higher than u, who feel they deserve to be looked after better than you. They feel superior and show off, saying that, because of your different social economic circumstances, they don’t believe that you can do better than them or become somebody useful. Your

peers, the children torment you at school. The parents boast in your face in f ront of your parents. It upset me. So, I grew up as a person who always had something to prove to the next person. My thing was defiance “okay fine, you might have the surname that I don’t have, you might have a silver spoon in your mouth, but I can always do better than you.

You do not control my oxygen. So even if this your big dad is rich, or important, it’s your dad, it’s not you, I can do better than you.” And I've proved it. I have done way better than almost everyone I grew up with. I am not one person who wants to fail in anything that I set my mind to do. I’m a go getter. I persevere.

Q: What is your biggest strength?A: My fearlessness. My ambitious drive. I’ve always wanted to succeed in anything that I do. Whatever I touch has to turn to gold somehow. Even now, whatever I do, I don’t want to fail. My children know the same thing. I have taught them that failure is not an option. There is no such thing as failure. What is named as failure is just learning opportunities or stepping stones to success. Life is not just mountain tops but has valleys too. You can go down into the valley that seems like a shadow of death, you can fall but you pick yourself up quickly and move on, your carry on to your journey to success. Q: What do you know about cars?A: Mmmeee I know that I love cars. Eiish I’m glad that either petrol or diesel which is what we are used to will be a thing of the past. I know that we now have electric cars in the world. I can’t wait to experience that one. I also know that cars need to go for service regularly. Unfortunately, most women just drive them and never bother to take care of them…till the car is making funny noises where it means something is seriously not right.

I just don’t get it though! We women, we spend too much money on servicing our hair, skin, nails. We eat good food and drink as fuel for our body but are neglectful of looking after our vehicles. That’s bizarre.

Q: What's your favourite car

and why?A: G Wagon. It's super comfortable.

Q: How do you choose a car when you are on the market?A: I like them big. 4X4s. I like to feel like I'm on top of the world when I'm driving. I also look for luxury and comfort.

Q: How do cars make you feel?A: Powerful.4x4s negotiate the traffic and the road better. It gives me visibility and presence. Owning a good car makes me know I am being rewarded for my hard work, I am also using the latest cutting-edge transportation tool to accomplish my day to day tasks. Cars validate me in a way I guess. They are my f riends. They help to take me to clinch my next big deal.

Q: What is your most important attribute as a business leader?A: To grow people. To work with the people and not above the people. To lead not rule. To collaborate and do great things and realizing that I will always have to put in an equal amount of focus and dedication or even more than my staff.

Q: What is your message for the girl child?A: To the girl child and to every woman. Absolutely no one can misuse or abuse you without your permission. Everyone is born with a gift. No one is useless. You have a brain use it well. Don’t be idle. Use your skills, experiences and continuous education and training to negotiate to get employed or start a business and not be taken advantage of by old sugar daddies/ blessers.

Your ambition does not end with you want to be mother of so & so, or wife of so & so or even girlf riend of so & so. There are way bigger things out there already set up specifically for you. That way you can date people of your own age. Madhalas have had their life, and most probably have messed it up, so can be fooling around, and full of baggage. You do not need to be part of that baggage. Be f ree to be who you are created to be. Bold. Black. Brave. Beautiful. Productive. Fly.

Q: How do you balance the demands of business and motherhood?

A: I plan my schedules and my work well. I do not take work home. It is important to give myself down time with the family. I give the girls and I time to catch up on all sorts of things.

Q: How do you motivate yourself in difficult times?A: I look up to God f rom where my greatest strength comes. Everyone has God’s hands, feet, heart and pockets around them in the form of relationship capital. If only we would build good relationships. I have a few people, or let’s say mentors that I trust. People who know stuff better than I do. I call on them for advice.

For example, Dr. Mangudya, He has contributed a lot to my success and to my business. He is one person that saw potential in me, identified it, and said “Zodwa you can do this!”. He redirects me, whenever I am falling or off track. He is now the Governor, a very big honour, but I've been privileged to know him way before he was the Governor. There are difficult financial times we went through as a business. He, as a seasoned banker was there to encourage and provide options and sustainable solutions for us to stay afloat. I have had most people look down on me, but I would say he was consistent in urging me on when I felt like giving up.

He always gave me the push and would say “Don’t give up, don’t look for partners, this is your vision, you can do this on your own. Look for the banks, the bank can assist you”. When you are starting out having business partners can be a headache because of divergent view of how to do things, and different lifestyles and values. Yes, it may just work for other people but it doesn’t work for everyone. If you do decide to have partners, you must choose the right partner to get into business with. In our Af rican Zimbo mentality of pull- me – down competition it is sad but it is rare to find trustworthy people of character and integrity who have your passion and your energy for the project.

Q: Describe yourself in one wordA: Go-getter

Q: In your life is a car a fashion statement or mode of transportA: Both. It’s a lifestyle issue.

SIZE matters right???

It was not until several years ago, when I drove a large SUV for the first time, that I then understood why a lot of people prefer trucks over cars. Firstly, several brands are making SUVs that are equipped for off-roading, secondly , you feel super protected due to the size of the vehicle, and thirdly, you get the same luxury feeling that a great car gives, making the experience actually quite fun and satisfying.

All these reasons had me falling head over heels with driving a big SUV! Here is to why…

#1: THEY ARE PRACTICALSUVs are not only gorgeous, but they are also practical! They have space for pretty much everything, are extremely comfortable and are very safe. When I think of them I automatically envision an abundance of legroom/headroom, storage space, rear air vents and USB ports, which make our lives much easier.

In addition to ALL this SUV

goodness, the high seating positions offer more visibility. I feel a lot safer based on their size, durability, and ruggedness.

#2: YOU CAN PACK IT INThey are great for carrying large loads. When I am out thrifting and run across an amazing piece of furniture for my apartment, it is super convenient to just fold the seats down and have the stock guy toss my new must-have in the back.

Talk about a time & money saver! No more worrying about scheduling and paying delivery fees. #ChaChing???

#3: A BIG SUV IS EXTREMELY FUN TO DRIVEDriving a large, rugged, yet luxurious SUV is extremely fun! Most have the scandalous speed that I love. They are easy to handle, their cabins are exceptionally quiet, and are more of an awesome EXPERIENCE than just a drive.

#4: THEY ARE BETTER IN HORRIBLE WEATHER CONDITIONSI am a Harare gal, so I can tell you

countless horror stories about the times my Mazda 626 where I got stuck in mud. Throughout all my discombobulation, one of the things that I noticed is SUVs/Pickups usually plow through in these type of weather conditions which is a lot easier than cars. #BigSUVSRock!!!

#5: YOU FEEL LIKE A TOTAL BAD A$$Yep, I got to put it out there! When I am driving a big SUV, I feel like a total #Bada$$! They are exhilarating, empowering, and to be honest a total confidence builder. I love that I can handle vehicles of this magnitude with ease.

A lot of times I feel like Ludacris, and want to tell everyone to, “Move, get out the way! Get out the way! Get out the way!” A clean version, of course!???

If you have never driven a big SUV you should try it out! Like It is such a confidence booster and it is super fun and sexy. And, once you master the command over an SUV, you can practically do anything…motoring I mean!

THE PROS1. Amazing Off-Road CapabilityAll models of the new Defender come equipped with all-wheel drive and locking differentials. This gives drivers the traction they need to make their way more safely through difficult conditions. The advanced systems on the Defender have been finely tuned to be able to handle rocks, snow, mud, and more. Plus, the SUV has adaptive damping, which lets its suspension make the necessary adjustments to smooth out the ride.

2. Geometry is Key

The way the Land Rover Defender has been built can be used to the benefit of drivers. It has an approach angle of 38 degrees, a breakover angle that can be up to 29 degrees, and a 40-degree departure angle. This all means that the vehicle can hold its own even if the terrain is uneven.

With high ground clearance, the SUV can confidently go into a variety of places. It can wade at depths of up to 35.4 inches, making it possible to cross water to get to a desired destination. Using the Terrain Response program, the SUV

can actually raise itself up a few inches when fording a stream or creek.

3. Able to Tow Heavy LoadsWhen properly equipped, the 2020 Land Rover Defender can tow up to 3720kgs. This rivals many trucks and full-size SUVs, and it's an impressive capability for a vehicle that isn't super bulky. With the Advanced Tow Assist feature, steering while in reverse will be much easier.

4. A Modern Winching SystemThe Defender doesn't simply have a winch built into it; it has a

remote-control electric winch that can be conveniently controlled f rom wherever one may be, up to almost 45metres away. The winch has a maximum pulling force of 44482 Newtons so people will be able to get themselves or their buddies out of tricky spots.

5. Two Engine OptionsWith the Land Rover Defender, consumers will get to choose whether they prefer a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine or a mild hybrid system. The 2L component provides 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque, and the alternative set-up can generate 295kW of power and 550Nm of torque. Giving the engine all of this power are an electric motor and a turbocharged gas engine with six cylinders and a displacement of three liters.

When looking at the Defender and the various trims, people will see the terms "P300" and "P400" commonly used. P300 refers to the 2.0-liter engine, and P400 is used to describe the hybrid engine.6. An Attractive Infotainment SystemIn the dash of the 2020 Land Rover Defender, there is a ten-inch touchscreen. Land Rover has decided to go with the Pivi Pro interface, which is user-f riendly and simple to understand. The infotainment system includes wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, as well as the

capability to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

What's even better is that navigation, which can take traffic into account, is standard. Adventure-minded drivers who are often traveling to new places will really appreciate this feature.

The base model has six speakers. While they do the job pretty well, there's the option to upgrade to a 10- or 14-speaker Meridian stereo system if anyone prefers to have a premium listening experience.

7. Keeping an Eye on EverythingWith the Land Rover Defender, drivers will have the opportunity to see all around their vehicles. The 3D

Surround Camera can be used when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces, and it can really reduce the likelihood of getting scratches and dents. Further, ClearSight Ground View technology can come in handy when people want to see what's directly beneath them. The camera gives drivers a view through their hoods, so they can be aware of rocks, potholes, or other types of obstacles.

ClearSight is also used in the rear-view mirror. The mirror can be used as a traditional mirror, or it can display a live video feed of what's behind the Defender while it's in reverse. This alleviates the need to keep looking up and down between the mirror and the screen when trying to reverse safely.

8. No Need for a KeyAnyone who gets a Land Rover Defender will have the chance to get an Activity Key. This is worn on the wrist like a smartwatch, and it can take the place of a traditional key. This system is designed for people who are active and don't

want to be burdened by carrying a key in their pocket; it can also be useful for people who are a little forgetful. When people place the Activity Key next to the door, the handles can lock and unlock, and the presence of the Activity Key can also allow the push-button start to engage.

9. A Luxury CabinThis list of the Defender's advantages has mainly focused on its capability and durability so far, but it's important to remember that Land Rover is a luxury brand. With the Defender, the company didn't leave out too many details. Premium cabin lighting can be configured with 10 different options, the seats can be heated and cooled to make things more comfortable, and the seats can be trimmed with Windsor leather.

Whether one gets the premium trim, a base model, or something in the middle, there will be no doubt that the SUV has been built with sophistication in mind.

10. Versatile SeatingThere are many ways that the Land Rover Defender can be configured. The traditional layout offers five

seats, and this layout gives people plenty of cargo room in the back. For those times when more gear or larger items need to be transported, those rear seats can be folded down to expand cargo capacity. This seems par for the course when it comes to SUVs.

Where the Defender stands apart f rom many others is in its alternative seating options. With some trims, the center console can be flipped up to create a jump seat. Having room for a sixth person can be key for some people, eliminating the need to take two cars on trips. Something else to consider is getting two extra seats in the back.

The Defender can come with an optional third row, making it more appealing to people with a lot of passengers to carry.

The Cons1. Be Prepared to PayThe Land Rover Defender can be customized in so many ways. There are four available accessory packages, and other attachments and components can be added on. People with specific things in mind, such as driving into the backcountry or going on ski trips every weekend in the winter, might want to personalize their vehicles.

However, they should be ready to fork over a significant amount of money for this.

2. Base Engine Could Be More ExcitingThe enhanced engine on the Defender can make any drive fun, but the standard engine doesn't quite compare. On the lower trims, it would have been nice if Land Rover put in a V6 or anything with a little more pep.

3. A Full Cabin Can Feel CrampedAs previously mentioned, there are various seating configurations of the Land Rover Defender. It needs to be mentioned that people might feel a little crowded if the cabin is full of passengers. This would especially be the case in the third row, which seems to have been designed more for children than adults.

ConclusionLand Rover has done the market a favor by bringing back the Defender. It will attract anyone who has a taste for adventure and wants a capable vehicle that will be a little different than the standard SUV seen everywhere.

The Defender isn't a vehicle designed for people who mostly hang out in the suburbs and cities; it's for people who need something rugged, powerful, and durable. People who can afford such a quality SUV will be in for a treat with the 2020 Land Rover Defender.

KIA’S coming for the small crossover crown, but it has to get through Mazda first.

Mazda CX-30 Full OverviewThe 2021 Kia Seltos is the brand's latest entrant in the SUV octagon. It enters the arena with a full head of steam. Last year Kia delivered a knockout punch in the form of the three-row Telluride. With the recent release of the handsome new K5 sedan, as well as a redesigned Sorento crossover making its way to some countries, it's safe to say that Kia is on an adventurous roll. The question is, can anyone possibly hinder this South Korean juggernaut?

Well, let us see. It seems that Mazda certainly has a contender in the

CX-30. It is now available in Zimbabwe. The hatchback-based CUV gives the Seltos a run for its money—but when it comes to dollars and cents, the Mazda is starting on its metaphorical back foot. The 2020 Mazda CX-30 with Premium package we are using for this comparison is actually more expensive than the Seltos SX that it is up against.

CX-30 Vs. Seltos: The Inside StoryMazda is slightly more expensive the Kia but the extra cost, however, nets the Mazda a more delectable interior. Its use of higher-quality leather and lack of clutter makes it the preferred place to sit. Seat vinyl in the Seltos is rather rubbery and sticky in the summer heat, and feels a little lower-grade than in the

Mazda. Similarly, the graining on the armrest and door cards and dashboard feels a half step back f rom the Mazda. But if you are looking for budget wheels, the plastics are durable, and they will suffice for your needs.

Yet the Seltos is not without its strengths. Its array of buttons for the climate controls and radio are laid out so logically that it takes mere minutes to get the hang of it all. The Kia's infotainment system is the now-familiar system that appears in just about every Kia, f rom the Soul to the Telluride, and it's less convoluted and requires far less digging through menus than that of the Mazda's. In addition, even if its interior quality is a step down f rom the CX-30's, the Seltos is notably more spacious.

The hip-point is commanding in the Kia. My eye line was at the same height as a woman sitting next to me in traffic in a Dodge Durango. The second row is enormous—a

six-footer can sit behind a six-footer, and with cathedral seating, you still have a good view out f rom every angle. And yet there is a massive parcel area. How does Kia do this? You find yourself wondering the same thing. The back seat of the Seltos is significantly more spacious than the CX-30's, but Kia manages to find a way to give occupants ample room without sacrificing luggage space.

The Mazda's luggage compartment is nearly identical to the one in its Mazda 3 hatchback cousin—a mere 20.2 cubic feet of f ree space behind the rear bench. The Kia, on the other hand, offers a more generous 26.6 cubic feet of storage with the seats up.

CX-30 Vs. Seltos: Power HourInterior space and price are not the only places the Seltos pulls ahead of the Mazda. Despite having a smaller engine that makes less power (but slightly more torque), the Kia is actually quicker to 100km/h than the Mazda—7.4 seconds to 8.3. That is probably down to the extra low-end grunt of the Seltos. Its little turbocharged 1.6-liter four-pot makes all 264 Nm of its torque just off idle (at 1,500 rpm), which subsequently makes accelerating and passing a breeze. The Kia's transmission probably helps some, too; it has a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, whereas the Mazda makes do with a conventional six-speed automatic gearbox.

The engine is responsive, torquey, and has minimal lag. The

seven-speed DCT is smooth, too. Shifts are quick, timely, and there is not much clunking going on. Hills and inclines are a delightful breeze. The Mazda makes just 12Nm of torque less than the Kia, but peak torque does not come on until 4,000 rpm, just 2,500 rpm before redline.

The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine is responsive, but it is paired with a transmission that holds it back and does a poor job of keeping the engine in its (relatively narrow) powerband. You regularly find yourself thrashing along at 5,000 rpm in the Mazda thinking, "Hey, where's my upshift?”

This gearbox feels unrefined— as though Mazda rushed it out and forgot to tune it properly. The tall gearing does not help, either. You do not quite know what they did to the 2.5, but it does not feel as lively as it used to. It is adequate for the average consumer, but it works too hard when faced with hills.

Just puttering around town, one might not notice the Mazda's stressed powerplant. But once you ask it to do more than accelerate away f rom a junction or a red light, there is no denying the Kia's engine is better matched to the task of hustling the crossover effectively. And you will want to hustle these two, too, because the CX-30 and Seltos are both surprisingly great to drive. What the Mazda lacks in power, it makes up for in a sense of directness and solidity. The nose is planted, the whole car feels well balanced, and the CX-30 genuinely likes to turn.

But even if the Mazda is fun in the corners, the straight bits of tarmac take too long to cover. We know the CX-30 is getting a turbocharged mill under its hood for 2021, but for now, that strained four-cylinder lets a great chassis down.

CX-30 Vs. Seltos:The Verdict

Luckily, you do not sacrifice much of the Mazda's athleticism in the Kia. Yes, the Seltos is taller and less nimble than the CX-30, but it does feel planted through bends. Its turbo engine is also well matched to Kia's occasionally problematic DCT. The Mazda's ride is the better of the two.. Still, even though the suspension irons out small road imperfections, it is only adequate at soaking up

bigger lumps and bumps.

This comparison is between two competent and desirable CUVs, but in the end, it is a case of "(almost) anything that the Mazda does, the Kia does better." Yes, the CX-30 is slightly better to drive and more athletic on a curvy road, but this is not Best Driver's SUV, is it? The Seltos nails criteria that the CX-30 fumbles in. At the end of the day, fundamentals such as an easy-to-wrap-your-brain-around infotainment system, easy passing power on the streets and highway, and room inside the cabin and behind the rear bench are more important than driving dynamics. Mazda put up a good fight, but Kia rolls on with more wind in its sails than ever before.
