Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon August Meeting Round-Up Article by Dan Jardine Photos by Ron Calkins This year, on December 16th, we will return to the Museum of Flight for a fun-filled evening. There will be a bigger and better silent auction as well as the self-guided tour of the museum. Add to that a delightful cocktail hour as our members and guests check out and bid on their favorite silent auction items. McCormick & Schmick will serve a wonderful banquet and we will end the evening honoring our club officers, incoming and out-going, and all the club members who have contributed so much during the year. There will be more information in the next issue of the Iniezione. Any member wishing to participate in the planning and organization of this year’s Christmas party or wishing to donate an item to the silent auction, please contact Rita Ingram at [email protected] or by phone at 360-707-0154. The room was packed to the rafters and quickly taking on the ecstatic snap of a revival meeting, which in a sense, it was. It has been ten long years since a new Alfa was seen in this land, and when the main attraction rolled into view at Grazie’s Restaurant last month, the faithful swarmed the asphalt altar. September 2006Well, summer is gone just like that and it is time to bring on fall. Fall is my favorite time of the year. How about you? The driving is just better with a crisper coolness to the air and the changing colors of the season. We usually get our best Alfa weather in September/October. Hope this year is perfect for all the car things you plan to do.

Speaking of car things, wasn’t it great to see so many members at the August meeting? What a turnout for the unveiling of the 159 Sportwagon; it may have been the Alfa event of the year. What a beautiful car. The styling really works for me. Too bad we can’t have these new cars yet, and I certainly hope the current plan for Alfa’s return in 2009 comes to pass. It was also fun to catch up at the meeting with people I haven’t seen in awhile. The best part is that we share this common bond—Alfas. Old or new, it doesn’t matter, we are all connected because we love our cars. Can’t wait for 2009.

I again want to encourage you to consider stepping up to a leadership position in your club. Fall always brings on the elections. We are now one month away from nomination for our board positions, which will happen at the October meeting. President, VP and Treasurer are open this year. If you haven’t served on the board in the past, maybe now is the time for you. Many of our members have served before but some of you have not. We need new leadership; please consider taking this opportunity. I have had a blast the last three years on the board, and I know you will, too. Talk to any board member if you are interested or have any questions. Your club needs you!

I hope you plan to come to this month’s meeting, where Dave and Jane Emerson will be sharing the pictures and stories of their trip to Italy last spring. I have seen a preview, and I assure you that you will be quite entertained with visuals from the trip. Dave has a great eye for photography and these shots are some of the best I have ever seen.

Let’s drive our Alfa to the meeting and fill up the parking lot again.

Enjoy the drive!

Ciao Fred

Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon August Meeting Round-Up (continued)

With the music playing and his phone in his pocket, Velle simply said, “Call Judy.” The music faded and a sultry voice asked, “Work, home, or cell?” Velle responded, “Cell.” The system made the call and when his wife answered he said, “Just demonstrating again, honey!”

Pretty cool system, but what about the car? Five cylinders and a diesel engine with a 4500 rpm redline don’t sound very Alfa-like. Velle was a little cagey when asked what it was like to drive. After all, the car was purchased retail in Munich for about $30,000 and shipped unlicensed directly to Microsoft under a display permit—officially, it cannot be driven on the street. That said, Velle confessed that the Alfa diesel is rated at about 200 HP with about 400 lb/ft of torque! The engine is very quiet and apparently it does just fine on the low-quality diesel we get in the US. One of Velle’s associates shared that on the Autobahn, the car runs very nice at 125 mph. Even standing still, the car looks exhilarating. It’s about the size of an Audi A3 but, of course, infinitely more seductive.

Big thanks go out to a persistent Fred Russell, Velle Kolde, and all the folks at Microsoft for giving us this little taste of things to come in 2009.

Half Fast Lap of WashingtonJoin the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club for a Half Fast Lap of Washington

Starting Friday, September 15th, we want you to join us for a three-day tour of the East half of Washington. You’ll get three full days of open road driving with your Alfa friends. If you have one extra day you can make it a four-day event by signing up for our Pacific Raceways lapping day on Thursday, Sept. 14th. Check out the separate track sign-up. For the tour pick your own pace. We don’t intend to herd the group, but will give each car directions that should bring you to the end-point of each day at a reasonable time going legal highway speeds. We hope friends from Portland will join us in Walla Walla. The following gives the general driving plan. Driving times should turn out conservative but this isn’t a direct route-freeway trip.

Friday we start from Issaquah at 8 a.m., in Lombardi’s parking lot. From there the route goes to Enumclaw where we plan a second pick-up for south-enders. We should pull out of Enumclaw by 9:00. Pack your own picnic for Friday’s lunch break. Friday’s destination is Walla Walla, the city so nice they named it twice. We have a block of rooms at La Quinta 509-525-2522, talk to Jenny and tell her you’re with NWARC to get the $84 rate. For dinner and wine tasting you are on your own; Walla Walla has lots of options. We’re working on a group dinner but it will still be separate checks. Friday’s driving is about 350 miles or ten hours with breaks.

Saturday we’ll leave Walla Walla at 8:30 and head for Colville. Either bring your own Saturday picnic lunch or order one through the club. Saturday night we’re guests at the Kay Jones Ranch outside of Colville. Kay has a restored NP Caboose for a cabin and has offered to feed us a barbeque dinner Saturday and a pancake breakfast on Sunday. You can camp on Kay’s property for free or sleep at Benny’s Colville Inn about 15 minutes from the caboose ($57 to $82 – 1-800-680-2517). Saturday’s driving about 300 miles or nine hours with breaks.

Kay Jones will provide Sunday breakfast or you can eat at the Acorn near Benny’s. Sunday we start after breakfast and drive 3+ hours to Winthrop for lunch. We’re looking into box lunches, otherwise separate checks and take your choice. The tour will continue over the North Cascades Highway but we expect some folks to break off on their own. Sunday’s driving about 365 miles or 11 hours with

breaks.

Amy ChadwickWhat is your occupation? I’m an architect specializing in medical design. My current project is a new ambulatory care center for Group Health in Bellevue.

What Alfas have you owned? None yet!

Other Italian vehicles? Not yet.

Why Alfa Romeo? Why not?As the daughter of Greg Miller, it was unavoidable.

When and how did you first discover Alfa Romeo? Greg bought an Alfa the same year I moved out of the house. But I wouldn’t say I discovered Alfa Romeo until I had the opportunity to attend a general meeting and get involved with the Iniezione. The meeting I went to included a presentation by Martin Rudow on his book, Long Straits and Hairpin Turns. Although he didn’t sell me on Alfa fever, I really gained an appreciation for the passion of the Alfisti.

What was your first Alfa? When? That’ll be the day… I’ve got a few more years to go with the minivan!

How long have you been a member of the NWARC or other Alfa clubs? I’m not an official member, but I’ve been working with NWARC for almost a year now working as co-editor of the Iniezione.

Do you have any Alfa horror stories? Just staying out of Greg’s way when something goes wrong in the garage!

What has been your most memorable Alfa Romeo–related moment? Greg bought a 1991 Spider Veloce the same year that I got married. He (hesitantly) trusted my new husband to drive us away from our wedding in that little red convertible, and I enjoyed my first and only Alfa experience from Snohomish to Snoqualmie on an overcast August afternoon.

Anything else you would like to share about yourself? I’m a stay-at-home mom with two kids, married to a guy who’s into sports (not cars). For years I was baffled by Greg’s and my brothers’ obsession with cars & racing. However, having worked with the Iniezione this past year, I now fully understand and appreciate the passion each of you have for the Great Italian Automaker. Thanks for sharing.
