Algae-X On the Mighty Mississippi

Belle Chase Marine Transit in Louisiana has been in the marine business since 1977. The company operates a fleet of 14 crew boats, and 7 supply boats servicing the international shipping industry along the Mississippi from the mouth of the delta to Baton Rouge.

Over 400 million tons of waterborne commerce traverses the Mississippi every year by way of diesel powered watercraft. This heavy commercial traffic includes grains, coal and coke, petroleum products, sand and gravel, salt, sulfur and chemicals, building materials, and a lot more.

Earlier this year, maintenance manager Emmett Dykes of the Belle Chase Fleet, had seen enough clogged filters and rebuilt enough injectors and fuel pumps on the main engines and gensets aboard their vessels.

He decided to reverse the increasing costs associated with “Less than Optimal Fuel Quality”. To achieve his goal, he equipped one of their landing barges that are used as fueling staions in and around the Port of New Orleans with programmable, fully automated Algae-X Fuel Filtration Systems.

After seeing a substantial reduction in filter usage, and a significant reduction of injector and pump failures on the vessels bunkering at these landing barges, Belle Chase decided to install Algae-X STS-6000 Automated Filtration Systems on all 8 of their port facilities. The company decided to ensure supplying “Optimal Fuel Quality” to all the boats in their fleet and enjoy the same peak engine performance and lower overall operating costs they have realized with the one pilot projects.

Engineering UpdateThe New SMART FPS-DX System

ALGAE-X expanded its line of SMART Fuel Polishing & Transfer Systems with the debut of two new models – SMART FPS DX and DX-D.

FPS systems maintain fuel in optimal condition, prevent and eliminate tank sediments and provide Optimal Fuel Quality for peak engine performance and reliability. The new DX Series is equipped with a high quality 12 or 24 V DC gear pump and features a manual, or in the DX-D version, a digital programmable timer/controller.

The system is equipped with a strainer to protect the pump and clear “see–through” filter water separator to remove water and solids. This is the same type of filter combo we install standard on our TK systems. It can be used with a standard fine filter element, or optionally with a combination water block/fine filter, or a stainless steel, cleanable strainer. The DX features an Algae-X Fuel Conditioner that stabilizes your fuel, prevents and eliminates the effects of microbial contamination and to ensure Optimal Fuel Quality at All Times.

Our new DX Systems have stainless steel plumbing and are built on an aluminum back plate with spill prevention tray. For safe operation, Algae-X Smart FPS systems are equipped with vacuum and pressure sensors to monitor and control pump shutdown, alarm and operating functions.

The DX Series breaks new ground with the lowest price point for a professionally engineered fuel polishing system. They are very compact to fit in tight engine room spaces, and are ideal for installation inside generator enclosures. DX systems are uniquely suited to guaranty the reliability of engines, generators and pump stations that operate in remote and unmanned locations.

Hospital for Sick ChildrenThe Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto is Canada’s most research-intensive hospital and one of the world’s largest and most respected pediatric academic health sciences center. Children in every nation of the world have benefited from the innovations, preventative medicine practices, strategies, research discoveries, and partnerships around the world.

As with all hospitals, reliable emergency power systems are not optional. They are a necessity under all circumstances and the Hospital of Sick Children is no exception. To guaranty that reliability, maintaining the integrity of stored fuel, periodic fuel testing and fuel maintenance are a must.

Northern Generator, our Toronto based Algae-X Fuel Service Center, has recently serviced the fuel storage tanks at this facility. Using their MTC 3000 and treating all stored fuel with AFC-705 Fuel Catalyst, Northern cleaned the tanks and restored the hospital’s fuel to its “Clear & Bright” pristine condition. Pictured are the before and after fuel samples of the tank that really needed a visit of the MTC3000.

D’Amselle is a majestic 62’ vessel, built by Neptunus Yachts of St. Catherines, Ontario in 2008. Its proud owner, Beachcomber Ltd. in St. Lucia equipped the vessel with twin Caterpillar C18 main engines, each rated at 1015 HP.

To protect the engines and improve their performance, Beachcomber installed Algae-X model 1500 Fuel Conditioners on the mains and a model 200 fuel conditioners on the generators.

To ensure Optimal Fuel Quality at All Times, no matter where the vessel fills up or how long the fuel would stay on board, David J.E. Devaux, Managing Director of Beachcomber Ltd., recently installed a new, state of the art, Smart FPS-SX Fuel Polishing & Transfer System. The Smart FPS-SX systems are fully automated and can be programmed to ensure a high degree of safety, when operating while unattended.

Beachcomber Ltd. is not only the Caribbean distributor for Neptunus Yachts. They are also the distributor for Honda, Toyota, Daihatsu and Mercedes Benz. As the island’s authorized Algae-X partner and fuel service center, they have installed Algae-X Fuel Conditioners in every diesel vehicle they have sold since 2006.
