TEIN RESTAURANT 1095 Sixth Ave New York, NY Poised on the western side, 1095 Avenue of the Americas sits at the corner of 42nd street and sixth avenue. After a successful three year, $300 million renovation, the former Verizon phone company central office has been transformed into a class-a office tower, and is now home to MetLife's global headquarters. The building is conveniently located between three major transportation hubs: port authority, the times square subway station and grand central station. The 42-story tower features more than 1,000,000 square feet of office space. The ground floor store front is prime real estate for the dining industry as it has a high rate of foot traffic. Its centralized area near Bryant Park, which holds many seasonal events and activities such as the annual fashion show, the winter market, music concerts, yoga and fitness events, ice skating, etc. Across 1095 is the NYC public library & bank of America which are highly visited spots. It is also a hub for shopping as well as a center for many big companies. On average, 46,695 pedestrians pass by the store front on a daily basis, which makes this a prime location to open a restaurant, as it attracts many new diners.

F I R S T F L O O R F I R S T F L O O R The first floor is a dynamic space which contains areas for formal dining, lounge seating, and a bar area. Upon arriving through the main entrance, the diner will be greeted at the host/hostess station. To their direct right is the main bar area with seating along the bar as well as additional seating across the front glass wall, holding 29 patrons at a time. The bar is designed in a semi circular shape that wraps around the circular staircase which accesses three levels, from the second floor dining area to the kitchens located in the basement. Past the bar is the formal dining area which seats up to 80 diners at a time. Round booths seating up to 6 patrons are positioned against the walls at a raised platform of 1’-6”, with smaller group seating of 2-4 people in the center. To the back of the space is the lounge area, which is designed to host large group parties through its open plan seating. It allows for hookah smoking as it is separate from the main dining area. Curved bench seating is constructed along the built walls. The service area is located in the back with a dumb waiter station, which transfers food from the kitchens below to reach servers on both dining levels. Two restrooms are located on this floor, one of which is ADA accessible. An exit in the back is added to enter the building’s main lobby and elevator for wheelchair accessibility to the second level dining area.

The first floor reflected ceiling plan is mainly opened to below, with its shape mimicking the second level round seating. The overall design is inspired by Islamic geometric designs seen throughout most Islamic architecture and mosaics. It is designed with the Sicis The Art Mosaic Factory blue mosaic arrangement, which is inlayed within the indicated round design. At specific points, LED spot lighting is installed for lighting purposes as well as an additional aesthetical element. The remaining ceiling area in the center, shaping the stair opening will be tiled with the Whitney white stone by Cambria USA.

S E C O N D F L O O R The second floor allows for a more intimate setting. Each round enclosure seats a maximum of 8-10 people. This seating differs from the first floor in that it is a middle eastern seating style, also known as majlis, which consists of a raised floor platform at 6” inches high with cushioned seating and pillows. This allows the diner to not only indulge in Middle Eastern cuisine but to also experience its dining culture. This attracts diners as it represents the ‘exotic’. After demolishing the existing mezzanine floor, this new floor slab is installed which unlike traditional flooring, will be held and supported by suspended cables. These cables, chosen with a specific thickness to withhold the structures weight, are dropped from the second level ceiling. Positioned at specific markers on the outer edge of the round design of the second floor slab, each round shape will need 20 cables, making it an overall of 140 suspended cables. These cables are designed to also have LED lighting running up and down its line. This provides an effect of motion and weightlessness to the upper level for the person viewing it from below. The guardrail enclosing each round space is a clear tempered glass, allowing the diner to view the bottom level un-obstructively.

Charston, Jewel Collection Cambria USA

Blue Arrangement Sicis The Art Mosaic Factory

The mosaic and geometric design of the first levels reflected ceiling plan is replicated on the second level as well. This uniformity allows for a connection to be seen between the suspended cables through their round geometric design. Opposed to the white Whitney stone in the center of the bottom level’s ceiling plan, the second’s center will be tiled with the Charston black/blue stone. Whereas the geometric design of the first floors ceiling is composed within its parameters, the second floor has an explosion of shapes. This breaks apart from the over-systematized application of Islamic geometric shapes through a modern interpretation. The linear forms protracted from the round geometric shape, although out-stretched with specific coordinate’s in mind, render a random arrangement. These forms bleed onto the North and East interior walls. The various shapes and sizes created will also be tiled with the Sicis blue mosaic arrangement. The actual linear forms will have LED stripped lighting which will act as a main lighting source.

FLOOR PLAN

The space of this office is divided into two main areas. The East section is monopolized by the public rooms which consist of the reception, boardroom, two conference rooms, hoteling station and the hospitality bar. A great feature implemented in this area is the folding Nana Walls that are used to divide the boardroom, conference rooms, and hoteling station from one another. This allows for all these spaces to be combined with the opening on the Nana Walls in the event that there will be a large social gathering that will utilize all available space. The private division of the office is sectioned off for the employers and employees. Varying from the traditional work environment of private work cubicles, this office design promotes collaboration through its open work plan. Stepping away from enclosed areas, this design allows employees to move freely throughout the space. This not only aids in collaboration but is proven to make for better work performance. As a designer, it is conducive to not only create an aesthetically pleasing space but to also provide an environment that best meets productive working practices and office management.

Inspiration for the hoteling stations came for the camera itself. Analyzing the shape and form of the product, it is evident that one of the company’s most important marketing tools is their unique appearance. Since this is their flagship store, designed to attract investors and potential clients, it became imperative that the hoteling stations sell this point. Constructed on t h e f l o o r a r e f o u r o v e r - s i z e d touchscreen stations that mimic the camera’s upper half. The patron is able to interact with the touchscreens and utilize all of its features to grasp its capabilities to better compare it to similar products on the market. The ceiling design is a play on 128 dropped camera’s, all combined to screen a single image in 128 parts. This allows the viewer to see the full potential of the products resolution, image quality, and enhancements.

FLOOR PLAN TRIBECA LOFT, NEW YORK CITY

Located in the heart of Tribeca, New York City, this one bedroom loft is an embodiment of a modern spin on a Middle Eastern style residence. Inspired by traditional Islamic Architecture, this space represents many of the regions fundamentals in design. The main feature of the space representing this are the two rows of arches that divide the space into three sections. Adding a unique twist, these arches are constructed in rusted metal to portray an industrial look. With the combination of concrete flooring, the feel of the space is coarse which is contrary to the typical essence of Islamic design. Wanting to marry the rough look with the beauty of Islamic Design elements, I decided to take delicate features and build then in a rough look. The right section of the loft features a built-in storage unit with a large sliding metal door for coats, shoes, etc., an intricate wall feature, and lastly a kitchen with the same metal sliding door as the storage unit that houses the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher while the sink and counter space are located in the parallel island. The middle section encompasses the foyer with a water fountain design, a Majlis seating, which is the traditional Middle Eastern style seating and the dining area. To the far left is the bedroom which can be opened to the loft space or enclosed with built-in privacy screens. The bathroom can be accessed through the walk-in closet off the bedroom or through the entry adjacent to the office space.

define the foyer, living room, dining room, bedroom, and bathroom. The shapes within the dropped ceiling have LED lighting within them as the main lighting source with additional spot
