January 29, 2005By Dave Kingstone

The Northwest Alfa Club cre-ated the Alfi sti of the Year award to recognize the individual or couple from the general membership who most exemplifi es the spirit of the club.

This year we take pride in honoring Kathleen and Phil Edwards as Alfi sti of the year for 2004. Over the years the Alfa Club’s competi-tion program has graduated many members to SOVREN and other racing programs. With Kathleen and Phil, we fi nally got someone back. Several years ago the competition committee, fl ush with cash after a successful year, decided to solve one of SOVREN’s problems by purchas-ing their old timing equipment. For most of a season, the equipment sat around as we didn’t have anyone to put the time and energy into run-ning it. Then Kathleen and Phil came along and bailed us out. For the past several years they’ve been at virtually every track event. And not just running timing. Kathleen runs registration and Phil takes a turn as track master. And it’s not just competition. Kathleen put major effort into this year’s silent auction. And they’re not done. Cur-rently both Kathleen and Phil are involved in several Potlatch jobs.

Alfa Club events happen because of the efforts of folks like Kathleen and Phil. Any money we collect barely covers our cost. Without Kathleen and Phil and all the other people who help, there would be no NW Alfa Club. We depend on people step-ping forward, and it’s an honor for us as a club to be able to recognize Kathleen and Phil Edwards as Alfi sti of the Year 2004.

The NW Ferrari Club has thrown down the gauntlet to NWARC and invited us to lock horns with them in a challenge to see which Italian marque has the smart-est, nimblest and fastest drivers.

If you haven’t been out with the Club for a karting event, you don’t know what you’re missing. We’re talking neck and neck racing that is both safe and terrifi c fun! Something a little different, at least for NWARC participants, is that we’ll be using the latest electric go-karts, so they are fast, quiet, and don’t have that sickening exhaust smell that some tracks have. This year’s event will be held at the Champs Karting track in Seattle.

The event starts at 11:00am, and each driver will be entered into three heats. Based on these heats, the top four drivers from each of the Alfa & Ferrari Clubs will go forward to a “grand prix” style fi nal race. Let’s see who has the “best driver” for bragging rights!! At least we are using go-karts, and not our usual Italian steeds, so neither side should have a DNF (did not fi nish)! We encourage you to bring along a friend or family member to share in the fun.

So what does all this fun and grip-ping race action cost? The entry fee is $53 – but wait, there’s more… included will be “bottom-less” soft drinks, free tokens to play some of the video games between heats, and an opportunity to participate in the Ferrari raffl e of “parting gifts”.

Alfafredly’s RamblingWelcome to the New Year 2005! Time for resolutions, time for changes – tiime

now for the most amazing year in NWARC history as we prepare to host the 2005 National Alfa Romeo Convention here, July 28th – 31st.

The slogan or tag line for Alfa Potlatch 2005 is “Share the Experience”. What exactly do we mean when we say that to alfisti across the nation? I believe we all know in our hearts what it means, but let’s explore together for a moment. The idea of a Pot-latch is to share with others the wealth of labors, our land, our resource, and ourselves for one big party. We have so much to offer and this convention is all about us giving of our time, ideas, cars and experiences to ensure that our guests go home saying “ that was the most fun I ever had at an Alfa convention”. You might be saying, “Well that’s a pretty big goal”, but I must ask why we would do anything else.

Do we all not agree that this is the best and strongest group of Alfisti in the USA? I do! Do we not all believe that we live in one of the most beautiful places in the USA? I do! Didn’t we all support the decision to host this convention here just a few short years ago when we made the bid? Why of course we did.

So now it is time to make it happen. The planning becomes doing; the hours of work get more intense as we start to hit the deadlines in our plan. And the need for us all to play a role in putting on this party is critical.

What role will you play in our Potlatch? If you’re already involved, I thank you in advance. If you don’t have a role or a part to play, then you need to step up and get one! We need every member of this club involved to make our Potlatch the success we expect. Call or email Gordy or me. [email protected] Do it now – make the decision to have some fun, and remember – giving is always more rewarding than receiving.

I look forward to the ride!Happy New Year!Cheers,FREDPS Let’s make sure we show the Ferrari boys on the 29th who knows how to handle

the curves at Tracks. We all know Alfa owners are the better drivers!

Meeting: 7:30

Join us for the January general meeting Tuesday the 11th at Lombardi’s in Issaquah. Our guest and friend Don Kitch will bring the exciting story of this year’s Team Seattle effort. It is always fun to hear about the work that Don and the team have done to prepare for the 24 hours of Daytona. This year the team is running Porsches again and the level of support is very strong. It will be a great year for our team. Join us for drinks at 6:30, dinner at 7 with the presentation to follow.

Fred Wright

What is your occupation?I work as a Traffic Operations Supervisor for Snohomish County

What Alfas have you owned? Other Ital-ian vehicles?I bought my first ALFA (a champagne metallic 1987 Spider Veloce) in 1996. In a moment of weakness in 2000, I sold it to a Seattleite who never joined NWARC. I have been impatiently ALFA-less until this spring when I bought my green 1974 Spider.

Why Alfa Romeo? Why not? ALFA builds excitement, right? Oops, I guess that is Pontiac. Pontiac??Seriously, who could resist the sound, the mystique, and the timeless beauty of the design?

When and how did you first discover Alfa Romeo?Believe it or not, it was 1954 when I first saw ALFAs race at Watkins Glen. My dad worked corners at SCCA races back then and we kids got dragged (!) along. In 1957, while encamped next to Bob Grossman’s pit at Virginia International Raceway, my older brother and I handed tools to the mechanic during late night work sessions. I am still envious of my brother who got an impromptu Italian Tune Up ride through the Virginia hills at midnight.

How long have you been a member of the NWARC or other Alfa clubs?

I joined NWARC just before I bought my first Spider. I liked the people and thought I might get insider information about a nice car by hanging around with the club.

Do you have any Alfa horror stories?Yes.

What has been your most memorable Alfa Romeo related moment?I forget.

Anything else you would like to hare about yourself?I’m single, rich, and good-looking. Do you know any similar babes?

Alfa Romeo developed its 2.5 Litre, V6, 12 valve (part overhead cam and part push-rod) aluminium engine in the early eighties to breathe new life into the “Alfetta” GTV 2000 models. Could they possibly have envisioned that 20+ years of “evoluzione” later, this motor would retain the same basic block castings and see life as a production 3.7 Litre, 24 valve, 4 over-head camshaft beast? Maybe not.

Then again, a consortium of men with vision within the factory, as well as the local racing circles in South Africa, saw fit to approach Alfa Romeo–Italy during the mid-eighties and demand pen-ance! You see, the 2.5 Litre GTV6 cars (such as the likes of the Dawie de Villiers Glenwood racers) were giving the 3.5 Litre, in-line 6 cylinder BMWs a right run for their money in the extremely popular Wesbank series! These “men of vision” understood that if they were to retain their presence on the podium, something had to be done fast.

Fast it was! The factory gave

its blessing and the enthusiastic South Africans developed and homologated 200 GTV6 3.0 Litre cars with 3 twin-choke

Dellorto down-draught carburetors! While none of these beauties were ever officially exported, that same 3.0 12 valve motor

became the basis for broad use in the fuel injected L-Jet Milano/75 cars. The 3.0 eventually found its way into Motronic

164 models, virtually unchanged from that core developed in the early eighties! The mid-nineties saw the same 3.0 block

dressed with a marvelous set of 24 valve, 4-cam aluminium heads, and the newest models today include 24 valve 2.5, 3.0 and 3.2 Litre options, as well as a 330 horse-power Autodelta 3.7 Litre version!

Ideas about this 75 GTA project started with fleeting thoughts of stuffing one of these later 164 version, 24 valve 3.0 Litre engines in the nose of a Spider, but it must have been Wes Ingram’s simple question of “Why?” that brought me to my senses. (I was actually fortunate enough to autocross a 24 valve converted V6 Spider up in Canada last year – Wow, what a car!)

However, once I set my sights on a Milano as the bride of Frankenstein, the engine became my main focus as I learned that 24 valve Milano and GTV6 conversions have already been performed successfully. Naturally, I wanted more! My search brought me back full circle to one of those “men of vision.” Little did I know that Dawie de Villiers would change my vision as well.

South Africa enjoys a full line-up of the current 147, 156 and 166 series cars – each “home” to current “new genera-tion” 24 valve iterations. Dawie enlight-ened me as to the nuances of the improved

75 GTA PROJECT UPDATEThis is what happens when you put 350 horsepower in a 2500 pound car!

By John van Rensburg

The 156 generation blocks have a redesigned timing belt. Since the oil pump drive has been

moved to the crank the belt is routed much tighter than on the 24V 164.

The block as been slightly machined to make room for the new liners. These liners come

from a Ford turbo diesel truck engine.

Page 7: Alfi tsi Of The Year - Northwest Alfa Romeo Clubnwalfaclub.com/media/iniezione/2005/Iniez0105.pdf · 2018-05-08 · Alfi tsi Of The Year Phil and Kathleen Edwards Kathleen and Phil

7

(tighter-path) timing belt setups of the current engines, along with the new chain-

driven (off of the crank), higher-flow oil pump setups and a few other improve-ments! At the core, though, this is still that same 25 year-old block, only now with oil squirters in the bottom. This is where the similarities end.

For the conversion, Dawie has the head-studs removed and the crank mains line-bored for a perfect fit with the 78mm stroke, nitrated, GTA crankshaft (good for a 200 cubic centimeter bump in displace-ment over the 3.0). The block is also bored to receive specialty liners pillaged from the latest turbo-diesel truck design, running upwards of 45 pounds per square inch of pressure through them. Ample. The pistons for the conversion are 100mm bore, forged aluminum alloy units from Ross racing in California (good for an additional 500 cc gain over the 6 stock 93mm pistons). For the connecting rods, Dawie utilizes new GTA units, shot-peened for added durability. Rings are special units out of Total Seal in Arizona and special bearings round out the sub-assembly.

Dawie was one of the earliest pur-veyors of a special steel ring head gasket-insert to aid in the durability of engines with a tendency to “puke” their head-gaskets. This engine receives that same turbo-spec detail. The heads receive 2mm over-sized, German racing valves (sorry, Mr. Romeo) as well as mild, but effective, 9.5mm lift, billet camshafts with 272 º of duration. The beauty of these cams is

that they reach peak power at 6,200 rpm and then hold that power all the way up to

7,000 rpm! The engine rev-limit is set at 7,250, as we wanted to retain street-ability and, with it, the hydraulic lifters. The conversion, however, utilizes lighter, firmer resistance GTA lifters.

Heads are fully ported on the intake as well as on the exhaust side, and induc-tion is treated to

a special (never before used) aluminum dual-plenum and 6 intake runner setup – feeding 6 INDIVIDUAL THROTTLE

BODIES (again masterfully integrated into thicker billet head-adapters) con-nected 3-to-a-side on a solid brass shaft and connected via a set of gears at the back of the engine. There are six red, high-flow GTA injectors keeping those 6 ITBs happy!

Along with custom, ceramic-coated 46mm headers, ignition and fuel are controlled

by a fully programmable stand-alone engine management system from GoTech. Lap-top fuel curves were pre-loaded for both engines, which were individually dynometer-tuned installed in a GTV6 test-mule prior to shipping!

Feel free to email me with questions at [email protected]

Now that the engine has a displacement of 3.7 Liters it needs to breathe a little easier. These are the oversized German made valves that get the job done.

The most significant change from the 164 block is the chain-driven oil pump. This new pump provides a more stable oil pressure to feed the piston squirters.

The oversized ross piston with a stock 147 GTA connecting rod.

Dawie machines the pistons to his own specs in South Africa.

Next month we will cover specifics of the drive-line, shifter and transaxle improvements.
