Automakers sold 184,251 units last month, down from 186,772 in the same month last year. The consumer shift away from passenger cars towards various SUVs and pickup truck options continued in March, with car sales down 10 per cent for the month while light truck sales climbed by a slight 0.6 per cent, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. Ford was the top seller in March at 27,915 after a 7.2 per cent year- over-year gain, while General Motors lost its top spot after sales fell 18.4 per cent from last year to 24,610. GM recently announced plans to move from monthly to quarterly sales reporting to match its U.S. reporting schedule. The automaker reported actual total monthly sales while Automotive News estimated brand totals for the Buick (up 6.6 per cent), Cadillac (up 18 per cent), Chevrolet (down 19 per cent) and GMC (down 26 per cent). OTTAWA — The chief executive of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. says his agency wants to raise hundreds of millions more dol- lars to help Canadians afford places to live, adding to the billions already available in government funding. Evan Siddall said the aim is to raise $100 million more for housing, quickly and likely from private sources, because the money pledged by federal and provincial governments over the next decade or so isn't enough to make housing affordable for everyone in the country. CMHC's corporate plan, released last month, set the ambitious goal of providing all Canadians with homes they can afford and meet their needs by 2030. An estimated 1.6 million Canadian households are considered in "core housing need," meaning they live in places that are too expensive or aren't really suitable for them. Siddall admitted the goal is a moon-shot, but it's designed to force his agency and others to achieve more than is already eyed in the long- term national housing strategy, whose price tag is over $40 billion. "As massive as those investments are by the government of Canada, and the investments similarly that provinces are making, they're not going to be enough," Siddall said in a telephone interview from Victoria, where he had just addressed an affordable-housing conference. Siddall's agency has been at the centre of housing moves the federal Liberals have made since taking office in late 2015, putting CMHC in charge of major aspects of the national housing strategy unveiled in late 2017. Many parts of the strategy have rolled out, but the federal cabinet will soon be asked to approve one component: a rental supple- ment that low-income people can use with private landlords if they decide to move out of social-housing units. At issue for ministers is how portable the benefit will be, and under what circumstances a person would no longer be eligible for it. Another Liberal pledge is to come into effect at the same time as the supplement: a program to have federal coffers pick up some of the cost of a mortgage for qualifying buyers. Sunscreen protects the skin’s blood vessel function from harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure by protecting dilation of the blood vessels. Perspiration on the skin may also provide protec- tion to the skin’s blood vessels from sun damage, a recent study has suggested. UVR from the sun has been well-documented as a contributing factor to skin cancer and premature skin aging. UVR has also been found to reduce nitric oxide-associated dilation of skin blood vessels (vasodilation) by reducing the amount of nitric oxide available in the skin. Nitric oxide is a compound essential for blood vessel health. Vasodilation of the skin’s blood vessels plays an important role in regulating body temperature and re- sponding to heat stress, both locally in the skin and throughout the body. The findings were discussed in the Experimental Biol- ogy 2019 meeting. Researchers from Pennsylvania State Univer- sity studied the effect of UVR exposure with sunscreen or sweat on nitric oxide’s ability to promote vasodilation of skin blood ves- sels. Healthy young adults with light-to-medium skin tone were exposed to UVR on one arm while the other arm served as a control and did not receive UVR treatment. The dosage of UVR was roughly equivalent of spending an hour outside on a sunny day, but without the reddening of sunburn. Sara Ali Khan or Alia Bhattwho wore this blue kurta-

The ‘write’ way to go traditionalExploring the new-age sari

‘Move over slogan T-shirts andjackets, it’s time to make way forslogan lehenga choli andtypography-printed saris

When actor Deepika Padukone wore a red dupatta with the Sanskritquote ‘Sada Saubhagyavati Bhava’ embroidered in gold at her wed-ding ceremony last year, a fashionable love affair between traditionalcanvas and typography was kindled. And it has been a whirlwindromance ever since. From Nita Ambani’s ‘Shubharambh’ (translatingto ‘a good beginning’) embroidered lehenga choli by Sabyasachi toSonam Kapoor Ahuja’s House of Masaba sari featuring letterings inTamil or the Anamika Khanna lehenga choli set featuring her namealong with the phrase ‘Everything is AK-OK’, wearing your ‘thoughts’on your ‘traditional’ sleeves, is the new big deal in the trend-o-sphere.It’s not just about the slogan T-shir t or denims any longer. Awhile back, actor Karisma Kapoor too was seen flaunting the trend, with a typography-printed Satya Paul sari that spelt out ‘mirchi’ inHindi.Stylist Rishi Raj asserts that customisations such as these help take“couture to the next level”. He adds, “It can’t get more bespoke orcustomised in this world which wants everything couture. A couturepiece is like owning an exquisite piece of ar t and its exclusivity in-creases when you have typography or a slogan that’s uniquely yours.”A slogan is a basic way of telling the world who and what you are, what you like and dislike or what you believe in. But designer RahulMishra points out that not all occasions demand one to make a state-ment. He reveals he has been “gett ing a lot of requests forcustomisation of different sor ts” but shares “when it comes to slo-gans being featured on formal garments, one needs to take the under-stated route”. Mishra says, “I don’t think having big slogans will workon formal garments but I love the idea of typography. Slogans of anysor t, on any garment, mostly illustrate the political or social state of

present times, and formal functions don’t demand such issues to behighlighted.”On the other hand, designer Kunal Rawal says “there are no rules”.He insists that “the market is more than ready now for such trends.”Kunal, who loves customising his creations, shares, “Go for some-thing that resonates with you. Something you want to see again andagain.” He points out, “This trend has also given men the apt oppor tu-nity to be as involved as women while choosing a garment. Garmentsfeaturing wedding dates are a huge hit with the fashion enthusiasts.Besides the usage of numerals, roman numbers are a great optiontoo, and the market will see much more of the trend.”Naturally, in such a trend explosion, one is forced to question thelongevity of the garment with typography and its enduring appeal. Toensure it, celebrity stylist Isha Bhansali advises “never opt for some-thing that’s in your face, and be extremely careful with the placementof the slogan or the text”. She adds, “Also, ensure that when the slo-gan is embroidered/placed on the garment, it should be in sync withthe whole colour story of your ensemble. Don’t make it too colour ful.Don’t place it near a body par t where it will be too much to handle.Fashion is all about the right balance.”

Kur tas styled with palazzos and loose pants is perhaps the top-most trend this summer season. The Indian attire has an appealand comfor t to it and has been worn by a number of Bollywooddivas including Sara Ali Khan, Anushka Sharma, Nora Fatehi,Sonakshi Sinha and Alia Bhatt. They love to style this trend in anumber of colours especially pastel shades. This trend is alsoevolving because of the comfor t the outfit offers and the numberof variations of fabrics, prints and styles.Sara Ali Khan definitely loves her ethnic wear as we have seentime and again. Last week, the Simmba actor stepped out in ablue kur ta paired with cream printed palazzo pants. She kept herlook casual by styling the outfit with juttis, small gold earringsand gold bangles. She even carried a unicorn clutch with heroutfit which increased the quirkiness of her look.Alia Bhatt also wore a similar blue shade of Sara’s kur ta, but shestyled it with greyish pants with white polka dots. She also car-ried a white dupatta and styled the outfit with a pair of whitekolhapuris and chose to wear no accessories with the outfit.

Nora Fatehi was also spotted in a similar look, wearing a blueshor t kur ta with a palazzo. She completed her look with silveroxidised earrings much similar to the motifs on her kur ta.Another similar look was spotted on Sonakshi Sinha. She worea white and blue floral kur ta –palazzo outfit styled with a floraldupatta. She also wore white kolhapuris and even adorned ablack bindi. How to get the look.Kur tas styled with palazzos are a summer outfit everybody coulduse in their closet. Cotton kur tas especially in white, can beworn with a number of different palazzos or loose pants of al-most any colours. Similarly pastel shades kur tas are in trendright now and can be worn with muted shades like white, ivoryor grey. Kolhapuris should be your go-to footwear to style withthis look and you can also wear light accessories to completeyour look.

FASTING THERIGHT WAY

As the nine-day-longNavratras begin today, manypeople will be fasting forthese days. The very wordconjures up all kind of no-tions. But going by the usualpractices we see around, most of these are practisedthe wrong way, taking awaymuch of the benefits that fast-ing can actually provide.Fasting dates back to centu-ries and is central to manycultures and religions. How-ever, in recent years it hasgained popularity across theworld for reasons based onhealth rather than religion. From ancient ayurveda to lat-est medical research, fastingis good for health. Many medi-cal studies have shown vari-ous health benefits of fasting. It promotes blood sugar con-trol, improves blood pres-sure, triglycerides and cho-lesterol levels, fights inflam-mation, boosts brain functionand preventsneurodegenerative disorders. It can aid weight loss andboost metabolism.Usually, when the seasonchanges, our immunity is atthe lowest. It makes sense, then, to give rest to the diges-tive system and eat light. Asthe foods we eat duringNavratras do not include wheat, oats, etc., the consupmtion of glu-ten-free foods can boost theenergy levels.

It usedto be so taboo, but it's no longer a secret source of discomfort - having separate bedrooms can often make for a muchhappier living arrangement. Too many times one spouse suffers because of issues like a partner who snores, isrestless, sleeps too hot, sleeps too cold, steals the blankets or just has different sleeping patterns altogether. Sara Ali Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singhshow how to stun in yellow this summer

A lively shade like yellow can be an instant mood enhancer and also a good choice for summer fashion. One can wear its different shades any time of the day – a pale yellow in georgette and a pale yellow insatin will look stark opposite to one another.Celebrities and style icons like Sara Ali Khan, Alia Bhatt,Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar has spor ted the colour yellow with utmost panache and the colour is here tostay. The best par t, it’s not weighed down by gender biases. Imagine Bollywood fashion in the 90s, andthink Govinda who spor ted yellow pants which may have been frowned upon back in the day but haveinstead gained popularity with the young guns of B-town namely, Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan andothers continuing this quirky trend.Ranveer Singh has proven how he’s the king of quirk fashion through his many red carpet appearances inthe recent past. It warms my hear t to see a new-age actor-influencer promoting fluid fashion to begin withand making a fashion statement nearly every time. Last night at HT India’s Most Stylish 2019, Ranveercame wearing a lime-yellow tuxedo with thick-rimmed glasses with a white frame. His energy and hispersona aside, the yellow was pleasing to the eyes that stood out amidst the bling we spotted on HTIndia’s Most Stylish Black Carpet.Amongst the ladies on last night’s Black Carpet was Radhika Apte’s look (that she later changed forhosting the event), a ruffle gown in dull yellow that flowed like a stream around the Sacred Games actor.Recently, Gully Boy actor, Alia Bhatt wore a sunflower-yellow lehenga choli at Akash Ambani-ShlokaMehta’s wedding in Mumbai where pastels were the theme of the day. Looking peppy and sprightly, weloved the character that yellow brought out on Alia at the wedding. She was lent suppor t by her B-townmentor, Karan Johar, who also wore a jacket in the same shade on that day. Here’s a throwback to one of Alia’s looks from her debut film, Student Of The Year, when she was seen onthe beach in a yellow bikini.Kiara Advani, too, has spor ted a yellow gown with a thigh-high slit at a recent awards function. Thegown’s off -shoulder look and the bling on the bodice made her shine bright on this red carpet. She sportedthese with a pair of colour-blocked heels.
