DIEZ AñOS DE AmISTAD CON UNICEF

Si todas las celebraciones de una larga y fructífera relación de colaboración son felices, la amistad SEK-UNICEF, que ahora conmemoramos, lo es de forma muy especial.

Porque ha significado, para ambas instituciones, la posibilidad de desarrollar valores comunes en el marco de nuestras respectivas comunidades, y al servicio de la sociedad.

Y porque, desde esos principios compartidos, hemos podido promover acciones docentes tanto en España, en las aulas de los Colegios SEK y de la Universidad Camilo José Cela, como en Senegal, en la región de Kolda.

Ese encuentro, en principios, objetivos y proyectos educativos, ha permitido que nuestro trabajo juntos haya crecido con el tiempo y de él se hayan beneficiado niños, de contextos muy diferentes, pero unidos en su derecho a oportunidades de aprendizaje que les aseguren un futuro mejor.

Este es también el momento para dar las gracias.

Gracias a todos los profesionales de UNICEF Comité Español, y de los Comités Autonómicos de Madrid, Catalunya, Andalucía y Galicia, desde presidentes y equipos directivos hasta voluntarios, sin los cuales esta celebración no hubiera sido posible. Y gracias especiales a Anthony Lake, Director Ejecutivo de UNICEF, por sumarse a ella.

Gracias a los profesionales del SEK que han trabajado sin regatear esfuerzos, con la máxima ilusión y compromiso, para que cada actividad fuera un éxito.

Y gracias a todos los niños que nos han inspirado con su sonrisa, su esperanza y su pasión por aprender.

TEN yEARS OF FRIENDSHIP wITH UNICEF

If it is true that all celebrations of a long and fruitful relationship are happy, the SEK-UNICEF frienship, which we are commemorating today, is particularly so.

Because it has meant, for both institutions, the chance to develop common values within our respective communities, and service to society.

And because, starting from these shared principles, we have been able to promote teaching initiatives both in Spain, in SEK Schools’ classrooms and in those of the Camilo Jose Cela University, and in Senegal, in the Kolda region.

This coming together, in terms of principles, objectives and educational projects, has made it possible for our joint work to increase with time for the benefit of children from very different surroundings, but united in their right to learning opportunities that will assure them a better future.

This is also the time to express gratitude.

Thanks to all the Spanish UNICEF Committee professionals, and the Autonomic Committees of Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia and Galicia, from the presidents and management teams to the volunteers, without whom this celebration would not have been possible. And a special thank you to Anthony Lake, Executive Director of UNICEF, for taking part.

Fue, además, la primera ‘Escuela Amiga de UNICEF’ y su compromiso en estos años con el proyecto de ‘Refuerzo de la Escolarización de las Niñas en Senegal’ ha beneficiado a más de 25.000 niños y niñas de medio centenar de escuelas en la región de Kolda, en el sur del país. Su participación en las actividades de la campaña educativa ‘Gotas para Níger’ ha contribuido, además, a mejorar los niveles de supervivencia de la infancia en este país

africano.

SEK, THE FIRST SCHOOL IN SPAIN TO bE A ‘UNICEF FRIEND SCHOOL’

The SEK Educational Group has been working with UNICEF in the field of education since 2004. It was also the first school to be a ‘UNICEF Friend School ‘ and its involvement during these years with the ‘Improving School Enrolment amongst Girls in Senegal’ project has benefited over 25,000 boys and girls from fifty schools in the Kola region, in the south of the country. In addition, its participation in the activities of the educational campaign ‘Drops for Niger ‘ has contributed to improve

infant survival rates in this other African country.

Como ‘Escuela Amiga’, la Institución Educativa SEK comparte los valores y misión de UNICEF, incluyendo en su Ideario la promoción y defensa de los derechos de la infancia. Forma parte del programa ‘Enrédate’ de UNICEF, celebra el Día Universal de la Infancia e involucra a toda su comunidad educativa en múltiples actividades de sensibilización y movilización de recursos económicos (crowdfunding) para financiar proyectos de cooperación al desarrollo.

As a ‘Friend School’, the SEK Educational Group shares the values and mission of UNICEF, including the promotion of children’s rights, in their thinking and practice. It takes part in the UNICEF ‘Enrédate’ (Get involved) programme, celebrates Universal Day of the Child and involves its whole educational community in a variety of awareness and crowdfunding activities to pay for cooperation for development projects.

SEK y UNICEF UNEN SUS FUERZAS EN SENEGAL

Con motivo del convenio con UNICEF para ayudar a la infancia a través de la educación, los Embajadores Infantiles SEK viajaron a Senegal en 2005 y en 2008, tras reunir cada año importantes fondos procedentes de la propia Institución SEK y de las donaciones que realizan, con generosidad, las familias de su comunidad educativa.

En los 10 primeros años de alianza, la Comunidad Educativa SEK ha logrado aportar más de 850.000 euros al programa de UNICEF en Senegal.

El proyecto contempla, además, otros 255.000 euros, entre el presente curso escolar y el del año próximo, para la consecución de nuevos objetivos previstos.

Garantizar que todos los niños y niñas tienen acceso a una educación

de calidad sienta las bases para el desarrollo, la transformación, la innovación, la oportunidad y la igualdad. Ese es el convencimiento de quienes, durante estos años, han ayudado económicamente a la realización de este proyecto en Senegal.

Un proyecto que promueve la mejora cualitativa de la enseñanza y aborda los problemas de acceso y permanencia en las escuelas de la región de Kolda, con especial foco en las niñas.

La ayuda de la Comunidad Educativa SEK ha contribuido a la creación de nuevas infraestructuras escolares y sanitarias, la compra de material educativo, la mejora del ambiente escolar, la formación de maestros y la propia gestión docente.

UNICEF desarrolla en Senegal el modelo de ‘Escuelas Amigas de la Infancia’, en cuya iniciativa la

Institución SEK es pionera. En estas escuelas los niños, además de aprender conocimientos y aptitudes, están en un entorno seguro, tienen acceso a instalaciones de agua y saneamiento (abastecimiento de agua potable, retretes privados y separados niños/niñas), y toman conciencia de buenas prácticas higiénicas.

Mejorar la escolarización, reducir el absentismo y crear un entorno sano, saludable y protector, libre de violen-cia, de discriminación y de prácticas perjudiciales, es allí una prioridad.

Más de 10 años en los que UNICEF y la Comunidad Educativa SEK –alumnos, familias y profesores– caminan de la mano para reforzar su compromiso permanente por un mundo más justo y solidario.

Tras la iniciativa de la Institución SEK se han sumado más de 40 colegios de toda España a la red de UNICEF de ‘Escuelas Amigas de la Infancia’. ■

SEK AND UNICEF jOIN FORCES IN SENEGAL

Further to the agreement with UNICEF to support childhood through education, SEK Child Ambassadors travelled to Senegal in 2005 and 2008, following the collection of significant funds every year from the SEK Group itself and from donations generously made by the educational community’s families.

In the first 10 years of the alliance, the SEK Educational Community has managed to raise over 850,000 Euros for the UNICEF programme in Senegal.

The project is also looking forward to collecting another 255,000 Euros, in the current school year and the next one, as a result of reaching a variety of planned objectives.

Guaranteed access to quality education for all boys and girls establishes the foundations for

development, change, innovation, opportunity and equality. That is the conviction of those who have, through the years, provided financial help towards making this project in Senegal a reality.

A project that promotes improvement in the quality of education and which deals with problems of access and continuity in schools in the Kolda region, with special focus on girls.

The help provided by the SEK Educational Community has contributed to the creation of new educational and sanitary infrastructures, the purchase of educational materials, the improvement of the school environment, teacher training and education management itself.

UNICEF is developing in Senegal the ‘Child-Friendly School’ system, an initiative in which SEK is a pioneer. In these schools children, as well as

learning knowledge and skills, are also in a secure environment. They have access to water and sanitation facilities (drinking water supplies, private toilets with separate facilities for boys and girls), and pick up good hygiene practices (when you should wash your hands).

Improving school enrolment, reducing absenteeism and creating a safe, healthy and protective environment, free from violence, discrimination and harmful practices, is a priority there.

More than 10 years in which UNICEF and SEK Educational Community –students, family and teachers– march together to strengthen their permanent compromise for a fairer and more solidary world.

Following the SEK Group’s initiative, over 40 schools from all over Spain have involved themselves in the UNICEF ‘Child-Friendly School’ network. ■

LA INSTITUCIÓN SEK, PREmIO ‘mARCAS EjEmPLARES’ DE UNICEF EN LA CATEGORíA DE ‘INNOVACIÓN EjEmPLAR’

El 2 de diciembre del año 2004, la Institución Educativa SEK obtuvo, gracias a la inestimable colaboración y ayuda solidaria de toda su comunidad educativa, el Premio ‘Marcas Ejemplares’, en su categoría de ‘Innovación Ejemplar’, otorgado por UNICEF.

Fue el reconocimiento público a la labor pionera en España que, como primera ‘Escuela Amiga’ de Unicef, representa la Institución SEK con la puesta en marcha de diversas actividades formativas y la recaudación de recursos destinados a distintos programas solidarios de educación.

El premio lo recogió el fundador y presidente de la Institución Educativa SEK, Felipe Segovia, en nombre de toda la Comunidad Educativa SEK. ■

THE SEK GROUP, wINNER OF THE UNICEF ‘ExEmPLARy bRANDS’ AwARD IN THE ‘ExEmPLARy INNOVATION’ CATEGORy

On December 2nd, 2004, the SEK Educational Group obtained, thanks to the priceless generosity of its entire educational community, the ‘Exemplary Brands’ Award in the ‘Exemplary Innovation’ category, given by UNICEF.

It was a public recognition of the ground-breaking work in Spain which, as the first ‘Unicef Friend School ‘, the SEK Group represents through its initiation of a variety of educational activities and the collection of resources for various voluntary educational programmes.

The award was received by the founder, and at that time president, of the SEK Educational Group, Felipe Segovia, who made a short, emotionally-charged speech, for this noble cause which brings together all the efforts of the entire SEK Educational Community. ■


DíA UNIVERSAL DEL NIñO y ACTIVIDADES CAS

Como ‘Escuela Amiga de la Infancia’ de UNICEF, la Institución Educativa SEK celebra cada 20 de noviembre, en sus distintos Colegios, el ‘Día Universal del Niño’, que institucionalizó la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas en 1956.

Un día de celebración que, a través de múltiples actividades simbólicas y solidarias, se consagra a la fraternidad y a la comprensión entre los niños del mundo entero para promover el bienestar de la infancia e intensificar los esfuerzos realizados a favor de los niños.Pequeños y mayores celebran el Día Universal del Niño para recordar con su voz y sus propuestas que la nutrición, la salud, la supervivencia y el desarrollo son derechos humanos en todas partes.

Concienciar acerca de la situación de los niños más desfavorecidos, seguir trabajando por su bienestar, y dar a conocer los derechos de la infancia son tres de los objetivos básicos que persigue el ‘Día Universal del Niño’ y en los que los Colegios SEK se implican a través de campañas benéficas, carreras solidarias y diversas actividades CAS (creatividad, acción y servicio) de sus Programas del Bachillerato Internacional. ■

THE UNIVERSAL DAy OF THE CHILD AND CAS ACTIVITIES

As a UNICEF ‘Child Friendly School’, the SEK Educational Group celebrates, every 20th of November, in its various international schools, the ‘Universal Day of the Child’, instigated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1956.

A day of celebration which, by means of numerous symbolic and voluntary activities, is dedicated to solidarity and understanding between children throughout the world in order to promote child welfare and intensify the efforts undertaken for the sake of children. Both young and old celebrate the Universal Day of the Child, using their voices and their offers of help as a reminder that health, survival and growth are human rights everywhere.

To raise awareness on the condition of the most disadvantaged children, to continue working for their well-being, and to publicise children’s rights are three of the basic objectives that the ‘Universal Day of the Child’ pursues, and SEK Schools get involved through charitable campaigns, charity runs and various CAS (creativity, action and service) activities of their IB Programs. ■

Todos los años UNICEF pone a disposición de SEK International Schools propuestas educativas en derechos de la infancia enmarcadas en el programa ‘Enrédate’ de UNICEF Comité Español. Los alumnos aprenden y perciben una forma distinta de hacer las cosas y descubren que, si hay voluntad, se pueden cambiar las situaciones de pobreza y vulnerabilidad. ■

THE ‘ENRéDATE’ (GET INVOLVED) PROGRAmmE

Every year UNICEF makes children’s rights educational proposals within the framework of the Spanish UNICEF Committee’s ‘Enredate’ (Get Involved) Programme available to SEK International Schools. Pupils get to see and learn that there is a different way of doing things and they discover that, if there is a will, situations of poverty and weakness can be changed. ■


LA GALA bENéFICA SEK-UNICEF DE 2008, UN éxITO

Otro de los grandes hitos que jalonan la historia compartida por SEK y UNICEF es la Cena de Gala que se celebró en noviembre de 2008 en las instalaciones del Club SEK, en Villafranca del Castillo.

Todos los fondos recaudados fueron a beneficio de UNICEF Comité Español para el programa Refuerzo de la

Escolarización de las Niñas de la región de Kolda, Senegal, con el que colabora la Institución SEK.

La cena fue presentada por la actriz y embajadora de UNICEF Ana Duato, que mostró su implicación con la infancia y contó su experiencia solidaria en Níger.

Tras la cena, se celebró, además de una rifa entre los asistentes, una subasta benéfica en la que se pujó por artículos cedidos por músicos y deportistas. Salieron a subasta, entre otros artículos, raquetas oficiales de Rafa Nadal y gorras de Fernando Alonso. ■

THE 2008 SEK-UNICEF bENEFIT GALA, A SUCCESS

Another significant milestone marking the joint history of SEK and UNICEF is the Gala Dinner celebrated in November 2008 in the SEK Club buildings, at Villafranca del Castillo.

All the money collected went to the Spanish UNICEF Committee for their Support for the Education of Girls in the

Kolda region, Senegal, programme in which the SEK Group collaborates.

The dinner was hosted by the actress and UNICEF ambassador Ana Duato, who made plain her involvement with childhood and talked about her volunteering experience in Niger.

After the dinner, as well as a raffle amongst the attendees, it was held a charity auction of items donated by musicians and sportspeople. Put up for auction were, amongst other items, some official Rafa Nadal tennis rackets and Fernando Alonso caps. ■

REGALO AZUL DE UNICEF

Todos los años, los colegios internacionales SEK, la Universidad Camilo José Cela y la Fundación Felipe Segovia felicitan, además, el Año Nuevo a toda su comunidad con un mensaje ‘Regalo Azul de UNICEF’, tarjeta solidaria a nombre de cada destinatario, que equivale a productos educativos o asistenciales para niños, que UNICEF envía donde más se necesitan. ■

LA INSTITUCIÓN SEK, PREmIO UNICEF A LA ‘EDUCACIÓN EN VALORES’

En 2009 la entonces directora general de la Institución Educativa SEK, Nieves Segovia, hoy presidenta, recibió el Premio UNICEF a la ‘Educación en Valores’ por “el permanente y significativo apoyo de la comunidad docente que dirige a las actividades y programas en favor de los valores de solidaridad e igualdad que emanan de la Convención sobre los Derechos del Niño”. ■

In 2009, former Director General of the SEK Educational Group, Nieves Segovia, now its President, received the UNICEF Award for ‘Education in Ethics ‘ for “the constant and significant support of the educational community that manages activities and programmes in support of the values of caring and equality stemming from the Convention on the Rights of the Child”. ■

ExPOSICIÓN FOTOGRáFICA SEK-UNICEF: ‘SENEGAL EN ImáGENES’

En 2009 una exposición itinerante de fotografía reflejó la experiencia del viaje que un grupo de estudiantes, embajadores infantiles SEK-UNICEF, había realizado el año anterior a la región de Kolda, en Senegal, para evaluar los progresos en las escuela infantiles financiadas por la Comunidad Educativa SEK. La muestra, que se exhibió en varios Colegios SEK de España, representaba “una mirada a África a través de los ojos de niños senegaleses”.

Historias personales en imágenes que exploraron la vida de los habitantes de Kolda y que fueron reflejo de la ilusión, la alegría, la recompensa del esfuerzo y el anhelo de un futuro mejor para los niños y niñas de Senegal. ■

SEK-UNICEF PHOTOGRAPHIC ExHIbITION: ‘SENEGAL IN ImAGES’

In 2009 a travelling photographic exhibition reflected the experiences of the voyage undertaken in the previous year by a group of students, SEK-UNICEF child ambassadors, to the Kolda region of Senegal, in order to evaluate the progress of the infant schools financed by the SEK Educational Community. The selection, which was exhibited in various Spanish SEK Schools, presented “a view of Africa through the eyes of Senegalese children”.

Personal histories in images that explored the lives of the inhabitants of Kolda and that reflected the hope, the joy, the reward for effort and the longing for a better future for the boys and girls of Senegal. ■


SEKmUN mEETINGS CELEbRATE THEIR 10TH yEAR

In 2007, the SEK Educational Group celebrated, with the help of UNICEF, its ‘First SEKMUN Meeting’ which, inspired by Model United Nations, brings with it a global view of the world and respect for Human Rights, or their violation in other cases. The deliberations of the pupils lead them to show interest in others and to involve themselves in the solving of problems that affect everyone.

The initiative originates in 2005, upon returning from a joint visit by SEK and UNICEF Spain to the south of Senegal. The aim of that study visit was that pupils from various SEK Schools could see for themselves, on the ground, where UNICEF Senegal invested the funds raised by the SEK Educational Group. And so a project, SEKMUN, which was conceived that year, celebrates in 2016 its 10th anniversary with the participation of more than 3.000 students.

SEKMUN promotes consciousness of and respect for the Rights of the Child and stimulates consideration, amongst children and young people, of the situation in which other children and other young people in the world find themselves: why they live in these

circumstances and what can be done to change the situation of the most disadvantaged.

SEKMUN is an excellent programme to achieve these objectives and encourage commitment in future generations to make a better world.

Ten years on, SEKMUN, the educational-cultural model United Nations project brought to its schools by the SEK Group, has become a significant example of education in ethics .

The success of the UNO system is based on solid preparation: getting to know the rules, mastering debating and negotiating techniques, researching in depth the position of the country being represented and becoming familiar with the composition of official documents. These UNO systems, initiated by Harvard University 60 years ago, also demonstrate the idea that the best way to solve conflicts is through dialogue and not violence.

Various matters are dealt with, such as, amongst others, education as a key factor in childhood development, international migrations and global climate protection to safeguard the future of current and future generations. ■

LOS ENCUENTROS SEKmUN CUmPLEN SU x ANIVERSARIO

En el año 2007, la Institución Educativa SEK celebra, con el apoyo de UNICEF, su ‘I Encuentro SEKMUN’ que, inspirado en el Model United Nations, aporta una visión global del mundo y del cumplimiento de los Derechos Humanos, o de su violación en otros casos. La reflexión de los alumnos les lleva a mostrar interés por los demás y a implicarse en la resolución de los problemas que afectan a todos.

La iniciativa tiene su origen en el año 2005, a la vuelta de un viaje conjunto de SEK y UNICEF España al sur de Senegal. La finalidad de ese viaje de estudios era que los alumnos de los distintos Colegios SEK pudiesen comprobar sobre el terreno en qué invertía UNICEF Senegal los fondos aportados por la Institución Educativa SEK. Ahí se fraguó el proyecto SEKMUN, que este año 2016 cumple su X Aniversario con la participación estos años de más de 3.000 alumnos.

SEKMUN promueve el conocimiento y el respeto de los Derechos de la Infancia y fomenta la reflexión, entre los niños y jóvenes, sobre la situación en que se encuentran otros niños y otros jóvenes en el mundo: por qué viven en esas circunstancias y qué se puede hacer para cambiar la situación de los más desfavorecidos.

SEKMUN es un programa excelente para lograr estos objetivos e impulsar el compromiso de las generaciones futuras para construir un mundo mejor.

Diez años después, SEKMUN, el proyecto educativo-cultural de simulacro de Naciones Unidas que la Institución SEK lleva a sus colegios, se ha convertido en un claro exponente de la formación en valores.

El éxito de un modelo ONU se basa en una sólida preparación: conocer los reglamentos, dominar las técnicas de debate y negociación, investigar con profundidad la posición del país que se representa y familiarizarse con la redacción de documentos oficiales. Estos modelos ONU, que se iniciaron en la Universidad de Harvard hace más de 60 años, ponen además en práctica el ideal de que la mejor forma de resolver conflictos es el diálogo y no la violencia.

En ellos se abordan asuntos tan variados como, entre otros, la educación como factor clave en el desarrollo de la infancia, las migraciones internacionales o la protección del clima global para garantizar el futuro de las generaciones presentes y futuras. ■


LA UNIVERSIDAD CAmILO jOSé CELA CELEbRA EN 2015 SU PRImER ENCUENTRO mImUN

2015, el año en que se conmemora el X Aniversario de la Alianza SEK-UNICEF, ha sido también el año en que la Universidad Camilo José Cela, siguiendo la estela del exitoso y consagrado SEKMUN, ha celebrado su I Encuentro MIMUN (Madrid International Model United

Nations).

En esta primera edición, clausurada en la Asamblea de Madrid, participaron 107 alumnos de 12 universidades españolas y extranjeras, en representación de los países miembros de la ONU, para encontrar soluciones a los problemas globales. ■

THE CAmILO jOSE CELA UNIVERSITy CELEbRATES ITS FIRST mImUN mEETING IN 2015

2015, the year celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the SEK-UNICEF Alliance, has also been the year in which the Camilo Jose Cela University, following the wake of the successful and acclaimed SEKMUN, has celebrated its first MIMUN (Madrid International Model United Nations) Meeting.

In this first edition, held in the Madrid Assembly, 107 students from 12 Spanish and overseas universities took part, representing UN member states, in order to find solutions to world problems.■

UNICEF y LA UCjC ESTRECHAN LAZOS PARA ImPULSAR LA COOPERACIÓN

UNICEF España y el Instituto para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Humano (ICDH) de la Universidad Camilo José Cela firmaron un importante convenio en marzo de 2012.

Un acuerdo de colaboración que ha permitido al Instituto para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Humano (ICDH) de la UCJC promover, en estos años, acciones conjuntas de investigación, formación y asesoramiento en el ámbito del voluntariado, la sensibilización social y la cooperación al desarrollo, dentro del entorno universitario.

Un ámbito de colaboración entre UNICEF y la Universidad Camilo José Cela que ya había vivido antes algunos hitos. En año 2008, por ejemplo, la UCJC inauguró en su Campus la primera tienda UNICEF en Madrid.

En el marco de las acciones de sensibilización que promueve la alianza SEK-UNICEF, se abrió en La Tienda del Estudiante el único punto de venta permanente en España de tarjetas y productos de UNICEF. ■

UNICEF AND UCjC TIGHTEN THEIR ASSOCIATION TO PROmOTE COOPERATION

UNICEF Spain and Camilo Jose Cela University’s Institute for Cooperation and Human Development (ICDH) signed an important agreement in March 2012.

A collaboration agreement permitting the Camilo Jose Cela University’s Institute for Cooperation and Human Development (ICDH) to instigate, in the years subsequent to the signing, joint research, teaching and consulting activities within the ambit of voluntary work, social awareness and cooperation for development , within the university environment.

A range of collaborations between UNICEF and the Camilo Jose Cela University that has already achieved some successes. In 2008, for example, the UCJC opened on its campus the first UNICEF shop in Madrid.

In the context of awareness-raising action encouraged by the SEK-UNICEF alliance, the only Spanish permanent point of sale for UNICEF vouchers and products was opened in the Student Shop. ■

El 26 de febrero de 2016 la Universidad Camilo José Cela nombra Doctor Honoris Causa, por la Facultad de Educación, a Anthony Lake, actual director ejecutivo del Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF).

Recibe el más distinguido honor académico en reconocimiento a “los méritos y valores que encarna, a su extraordinaria labor en favor de la paz, a su contribución a la cooperación internacional y a su abnegada vocación de servicio público”.

On February 26th, 2016, Camilo Jose Cela University named Anthony Lake, current Executive Directory of the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) as Honorary Doctor in the Faculty of Education.

He receives the most distinguished academic honour in recognition of “the achievements and values that he personifies, his outstanding work for peace, his contribution to international co-operation and his selfless work in service of the public”.

On 1st May 2010, Anthony Lake became the sixth Executive Director of UNICEF, bringing over 45 years of public service experience to the post.

Throughout his career, Anthony Lake has worked with managers and policy-makers from all over the world. In 2007-2008 he was Senior Advisor for external politics for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, a function that he also undertook during Bill Clinton’s 1991-1992 presidential campaign. He has been involved with a large number of external policy, national security, humanitarian action and development matters at the highest level, as National Security Advisor (1993-1997) to President Bill Clinton and as Director of Policy Planning in the government of President Carter (1977-1981). He joined the State Department of the United States in 1962 as a Foreign Service Officer.

After leaving the government, he continued to work for peace as a

Special Envoy of the United States President, firstly in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and later in Haiti, from 1998 until 2000. His efforts, for which in 2000 he received the Samuel Nelson Drew Prize, helped to bring about the Algiers Agreement, which ended the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea. He also played an important role in shaping the policies that led to peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in Northern Ireland.

His experience in international development began in the 1970s as Director of International Service Volunteers, where he organised the work of these “private Peace Corps”. During this same decade, he was a member of boards of Save the Children (1975-1977) and the Overseas Development Council. For the last 10 years, Anthony Lake has also been International Advisor for the Red Cross for the period 2000-2003, and President of the Marshall Legacy Institute, concerned with the

removal of land-mines in countries affected by conflicts, as well as providing help to survivors and promoting children’s rights.

Anthony Lake has been connected with UNICEF for a very long time, since collaborating in 1993 with the third Executive Director of UNICEF, James P. Grant, in the presentation in the White House of the organisation’s most important publication, The State of the World’s Children. From 1998 until 2007 he was a board member of the United States Fund for UNICEF, of which he was President for the period from 2004 until 2007, after which he was appointed an honorary permanent member.

Before his UNICEF nomination, Anthony Lake served as Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Edmund A. Walsh School of External Relations at Georgetown University. He has been a member of the Mount Holyoke College Advisory Board, as well as Counsellor Advisor for the Institute of Regional and International Studies of Princetown University and for the Governing Council of the St. Mary’s College, Maryland, Centre for Democratic Studies.

In 1961 he graduated from Harvard University, he studied International Economics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and later, in 1974, received his doctorate from Princetown University Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Born in New York, Lake is married with three children and five grandchildren.■

Durante su carrera, Anthony Lake ha trabajado con dirigentes y encargados de formular políticas de todo el mundo. En 2007-2008 fue asesor superior para política exterior de la campaña presidencial de Barack Obama, una función que también desempeñó durante la campaña presidencial de Bill Clinton en 1991-1992. Se ha ocupado de un gran número de cuestiones relacionadas con la política exterior, la seguridad nacional, la acción humanitaria y el desarrollo al más alto nivel, como Asesor de Seguridad Nacional (1993-1997) del Presidente Bill Clinton y como Director de Planificación de Políticas en el gobierno del Presidente Carter (1977-1981). En 1962 se incorporó al Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos como funcionario del servicio exterior.Después de dejar el gobierno, siguió trabajando en favor de la paz como Enviado Especial del Presidente de los Estados Unidos, primero en Etiopía y Eritrea, y posteriormente en Haití, desde 1998 hasta 2000. Sus esfuerzos, por los cuales recibió en 2000 el premio Samuel Nelson Drew, sirvieron para lograr el Acuerdo de Argel, que puso fin a la guerra entre Etiopía y Eritrea. También desempeñó un importante papel en la configuración de las políticas que condujeron a la paz en Bosnia y Herzegovina, y en Irlanda del Norte.

Su experiencia en el desarrollo internacional comenzó en la década de 1970 como Director de los Servicios Voluntarios Internacionales, donde dirigió la labor de estos “Cuerpos de la

Paz privados”. En esa misma década, fue miembro de las juntas de Save the Children (1975-1977) y del Consejo para el Desarrollo de Ultramar. Durante los últimos 10 años, Anthony Lake ha sido también Consejero Internacional de la Cruz Roja (2000-2003), y Presidente del Instituto Marshall Legacy, que se dedica a la remoción de minas en países afectados por conflictos, así como a prestar asistencia a los supervivientes y promover los derechos de la infancia.

Anthony Lake está vinculado a UNICEF desde hace mucho tiempo, cuando colaboró en 1993 con el tercer Director Ejecutivo de UNICEF, James P. Grant, en la presentación en la Casa Blanca de la publicación más importante de la organización, el Estado mundial de

la infancia. Desde 1998 hasta 2007 fue miembro de la Junta del Fondo de los Estados Unidos en pro de Unicef, en la que desempeñó un período como Presidente desde 2004 hasta 2007, tras lo cual fue nombrado miembro permanente honorario.

Antes de su nombramiento en UNICEF, Anthony Lake desempeñaba el cargo de Profesor Distinguido en la Práctica de la Diplomacia en la Escuela Edmund A. Walsh de Relaciones Exteriores de la Universidad de Georgetown. Ha sido miembro de la Junta de Consejeros del Mount Holyoke College, así como del Consejo Asesor del Instituto de Estudios Internacionales y Regionales de la Universidad de Princeton y del Consejo de Gobierno del Centro para el Estudio de la Democracia del St. Mary’s College de Maryland.

En 1961 obtuvo la licenciatura en la Universidad de Harvard, estudió Economía Internacional en Trinity College, Cambridge, y posteriormente recibió, en 1974, el doctorado en la Escuela Woodrow Wilson de Asuntos Públicos e Internacionales de la Universidad de Princeton.
