January 17, 2017 Alibaba’s Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance is Positive for its Outlook Alibaba Forms Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance With Luxury Brands On January 16, 2017, Alibaba announced the formation of a Big Data Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance with international brands to support its efforts to remove fake goods from its platforms. According to Alizila, Alibaba’s official media arm, the Alibaba-led anti- counterfeiting alliance has about 20 members, including international brands such as Louis Vuitton, Samsung and Mars. The alliance—which will leverage Alibaba’s big data technology, combined with the industry and technical know-how of each partner—is consistent with Alibaba’s long-term strategy to rid its platforms of fake goods. Alibaba’s Capabilities in Combatting Counterfeits The Alibaba-led Big Data Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance, defined by a concerted push against pirated goods from all partners, adds a further dimension to Alibaba’s efforts to combat counterfeit products. The alliance is defined by the following characteristics: Big data and machine-learning capabilities: Alibaba’s counterfeit-detection campaign is powered by algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and big data. Alibaba’s AI bots scan entire platforms in real time to detect counterfeit goods. These technologies can detect anomalies in customer reviews, product listings and specifications. Enforcement capabilities: Alibaba’s efforts to detect pirated goods are also supported by regulatory efforts. In July 2016, the company launched a joint effort with Chinese law-enforcement authorities to seize and arrest people allegedly selling counterfeit Kingston and Samsung chips on Alibaba’s Taobao platform. The joint operation, which ran between April and July 2016, culminated in the arrests of 32 suspects and the seizure of US$207 million worth of fake goods. From a legal perspective, Alibaba also filed a lawsuit in January 2017 against merchants selling counterfeit Swarovski watches.
