CEC – The Historical Perspective
At its first meeting in 1922, CEC first identified the establishment of professional standards for special educators as one of its primary purposes.
In 1965 CEC held a national conference on professional standards, but it was not until 1981 that the CEC Delegate Assembly issued a charge to develop a set of standards for special educators that was aligned to a professional code of ethics.

NAEYC – The Historical
Perspective
NAEYC first developed a set of
professional standards for early
childhood educators in 1982.
Since then, NAEYC’s Early Childhood
Teacher Education Guidelines for Four-
and Five-Year programs has been
revised 3 times—in 1996, 2001-2003 and
most recently in 2009.

Developing a Curriculum Map
Allows faculty members to:
– See the big picture and understand the
scope of the program
– Find redundancies
– Identify gaps
– Make sure that the curriculum is sequenced
appropriately
– Look for ways to integrate content and/or
experiences

Additional Tips and Strategies
Curriculum maps can include as much or as little detail as you need. For example, you can develop a curriculum map to: – Focus on assignments and learning
outcomes
– Focus on course goals and objectives
– Focus on prerequisites and co-requisites
– Help current and prospective students see the scope and sequence of your program
