A Historic Development

Alkhorayef Group witnessed much progress since its establishment about 53 years ago and through its long history in business. Its founder our father Sheikh Abdallah bin Ibrahim Alkhorayef, may Allah rest his soul, had a futuristic vision, relying first on Allah, and his patience and perseverance in confronting the difficulties and challenges, then passing the banner to his children who developed the company, modernized it and spread its activities worldwide. There is a belief in the Alkhorayef Group that everyone who contributed in the achievement of its success whether an employee, client or supplier, is a partner in its success. In its long course, the Alkhorayef Group was concerned with utilizing all of its human, material and research capabilities to serve its customers through the localization of technologies and investment in the Group’s big industrial complexes in Riyadh and Dammam so that its products reach global markets, something that happened since the 1990s. We in the Alkhorayef Group are proud of our employees as partners in success. Without their efforts and continuous work to offer top quality services, this success would have never been realized. We emphasize we will go on investing in our human capital through training programs, development, and cooperation with governmental and scientific corporations in the private sector and effective participation in the development of human resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is thanks to the policies of our wise government, after Allah, in encouraging domestic investment in all of the agricultural, industrial and commercial sectors. Government support played an important role in forming the investment map of the Group and enabled its national products to reach its international status of quality, and its appropriate place in global markets. This wouldn’t have been achieved without state support and encouragement of manufacturing and export through support funds and of trade policies to remove investment obstacles before businessmen. An era has passed with all of its successes, challenges and achievements, and today we are on the dawn of a new age looking up to its horizons with all of its ambitions and trust, relying on Allah, armed with our experiences and accumulative knowledge, benefiting from our know-how and excellent relations with our partners, stressing our firm principles and values represented in the new slogan and identity of the Group in its new attire, are one of the apparatuses that increase the depth of partnership between us. Our experience in modernizing our identity has proved to us that the values forming the identity of the Group is the basis of our success throughout the years, underpinned by our understanding of partnership and the concept of one family represented in excellence, trust, inclusion and commitment.

Alkhorayef Group participated in the Armed Forces Exhibition 2010 held recently in Riyadh under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Deputy Premier, Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector-General and opened by His Royal Highness Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Assistant Defense and Aviation Minister and General Inspector for Military Affairs. Al-Khoaryef Group had its own pavilion that included all of the Group’s subsidiaries with its main “equipment, petroleum, water, printing, papers and lubricants” divisions. The Group companies showed in its activities and projects what it is capable of in these fields. Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz visited the pavilion and was received by the Chairman of Alkhorayef Group Sheikh Saad bin Abdullah Al-Khoaryef. Many people coming to the exhibition visited the pavilion and listened to a detailed briefing about the activities of the Group and its subsidiaries by company executives who were present there. Visitors were impressed by the activities the Group presents in its various divisions and in its capabilities and important potentials to serve Saudi society.

Volvo representative Hans Anderson presented the Alkhorayef Group with a gift souvenir on the occasion of the inauguration of the new corporate identity for the Group. This was on the sidelines of the ceremony that was held recently and through which the new Group identity was launched. The gesture was made to reflect the excellent relations between the Alkhorayef Group and Volvo that go back to more than 30 years. Chairman of the Board of the Group Sheikh Abdulrahman Alkhorayef received the gift souvenir and thanked Volvo for this kind gesture that echoes the strong relations the Grouphas with its partners in achieving success.

Food Security Committee Requests Strategic Storage Mechanisms ReinforcementThe Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Food Security Committee stated that the local agricultural sectors must be taken greater care of, for they are one of the pillars of food security in the Kingdom. These sectors which include “fish, poultry, livestock, green houses and dates” must be nurtured regardless of the cost of their growth. The Committee also affirmed the importance of laying down a strategy or a framework to analyze the contribution of national agricultural production in food security. In addition, it stressed the importance of discussing the mechanisms and methods of strategic storage and its significance and the need to benefit from the experiences of other countries in the field. The Committee reviewed in its regular session chaired by Board of Directors member and head of the Committee Saad bin Abdallah Alkhorayef, Chairman of the Board of Directors

of the Alkhorayef Group Company, the suggested topics to be discussed in 2010, the most important being that which is concerned with food security, and the understanding of food security as related to the Kingdom.The Committee emphasized on the importance of containing and earmarking the priorities of the commodities that can be provided for the local market and to see its actual rate in terms of food security. Also workshops should be organized annually for the realization of the vision of the committee. This is in addition to establishing greater communication between the Committee and the concerned governmental bodies on the issue of food security to bring closer different points of view and establish a joint vision related to the Kingdom. The role of the media must be activated by guiding consumers to economize and rationalize on food consumption and its economic and health impacts.

A delegation from Alkhorayef Group of Companies recently visited the Riyadh College of Technology. They toured the facilities of the college and listened to a detailed presentation about its specializations and the programs it offers and the workshops it organizes. The delegation met with the College Dean Dr. Helal Al-Askar, College Secretary for Training Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mousa, Manager of Graduate Affairs and Training Cooperation Abdulrahman Al-Aheedab and a number of officials at the institution. They discussed suggestions and means to develop cooperation between the College and the Alkhorayef Group so that the training outcomes serve both parties. The visit comes as part of the plans of Alkhorayef Group to reactivate its social role which is an important part of its activities.

The Gulf Parts Company recently organized a workshop for the indoor and outdoor sales team under the patronage of the Chairman of the Company Sheikh Bandar bin Ibrahim Alkhorayef and its General Manager Hamad Al Kaltham. Under discussion were the latest updates and developments and individual skills of the sales team in the company. Sheikh Bandar presented a futuristic vision of the company’s work action, praising the performance of the team and wishing them allsuccess in 2010. For his part, General Manager Al Kaltham discussed and reviewed the performance of the indoor and outdoor departments, and outlined his vision to plan to develop sales and guide the work teamin serving the public interests of the company.

This was in a ceremony held in Auto Mall in Jeddah and the employees were Tareq Banajah and Jiand Kumar from AIC. This accolade reflects the Group’s support and encouragement of employees in appreciation of their efforts and continuous concern to develop the work and contribution to achieve the sought-out-for results accordingto the plans and strategic objectives of the company.

Alkhorayef Industries Company (AIC) organized recently a training course on KSB valves. In attendance were 16 employees of industrial sales from the AIC Equipment Systems Division. Director of Water and Sanitation Valves Department in the Middle East and Africa Engineer Marwan Jasem introduced the product and the extent of its distinctive features over the other competitive products to develop the technical skills and performance of sales engineers and increase their sales in the company. The training course is part of a series of courses the management holds from time to time for the purpose of improving the performance of employees and ensuring the highest level of work in all of the Group’s subsidiaries and numerous divisions.

AIC Organizes Training Course

The Human Resources Management at the Alkhorayef Group of Companies organized a training course titled “CRP2” on the 12th edition of Oracle Software. The course reviewed the issues discussed in the previous training course “CRP1” on human resource procedures and payroll. This is part of the HRM plans to develop the performance of its employees and supply them with everything that is new in the world of advanced software to serve the interests of theGroup in a better way.

The Alkhorayef Industries Company represented in its Marine Division honored the Luxurious Carriage Corporation, one of its accredited distributors for achieving the highest sales rates of the YAMAHA marine tanks for 2009. Director of the Company’s Jeddah Marine Branch Mr. Mohammed Majdal Al-Qahtani presented the Distinctive Distributor Shield to Sheikh Abu Bakr Omar Balbeed,owner of the corporation.

This comes within the strategic plans of the Alkhorayef Group of Companies to encourage all distributors and create a spirit ofcompetitiveness amongst them to achieve the highest sales rates.

The inauguration was made during a grand ceremony organized in the city of Riyadh on Monday 3 Safar, 1431 Hejri corresponding 18 January, 2010 in the Makarem Hall in the Marriott Riyadh Hotel in presence of Abdulrahman Alkhorayef, Chairman of the Board of the Group of the Abdullah Ibrahim Alkhorayef Sons Company, and Chairman of the Saudi Installment House Company Hamad bin Abdallah Alkhorayef and Chairman of the Alkhorayef Group Company Saad bin Abdallah Alkhorayef, and Chairman of Alkhorayef Industries Company (AIC) Engineer Mohammed bin Abdallah Alkhorayef and Chairman of Alkhorayef Printing Solutions Company Bandar bin Ibrahim Alkhorayef as well as a large number of businessmen, international partners of the Group, journalists and the Group staff. In a speech delivered by Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdallah Alkhorayef, he states: “The launch of the new slogan represents an important day in the history of the Group witnessing the introduction of a new attire for its customers which does not end at the trademark, but it is a new style of work that comes as a continuation to what the Group has realized in the past from caring for its customers and complying with their wishes”. Its products are used in printing books, newspapers, magazines, advertisements and packaging processes. Alkhorayef Trans Orient Modern Machinery and Alnakhil Paper Industries Company merged under the name, of the Alkhorayef Printing Solutions Company, to present a top package of quality services as is the case with the exemplary spare parts services.

New identitySince its establishment in 1957 Alkhorayef Group sought the peak of success and pioneering,

There was no brand or specific identity, except that of the name of the owner and his character we inherited…and what a blessed inheritance! Then it was turned into the Abdallah Ibrahim Al-Khoaryef Sons Company and its activities diversified, witnessing thanks be to Allah, successes and excellence in all areas it worked and is still working in, and becoming one of the pioneering companies that contributed and is contributing in a transparent way in building our dear country under the umbrella of our wise government, which was a basic element in this development, success and expansion. Phases of the projectIn accord with Sheikh Bandar Alkhorayef, who is supervising the identity development project, the start was to appoint a specialized company. The first step was to produce a working analysis of the different activities of the Group and the regions it covers to be acquainted with of its history and identify its common denominators. The analytical study noticed these two aspects in the following way:

First: Historical perspective:This can be divided into three main phases:First phase: The establishment phase from 1377 Hejri to the early 1980s. In that time the agricultural sector grew greatly in line with the market situation. It started with the supply and installation of water pumps including engines, gear and pipes for irrigation then it imported irrigation systems and different agricultural machinery till the company become the biggest in this sector during the Kingdom’s agricultural boom. This may have

been the beginning to entrench a culture of offering integrated solutions to customers, which became an important part of the Group’s culture until today. Second phase: It was the period of

I t has become common for companies, from one period to another, to revamp their

identity to keep up with the development and change they are undergoing. The companies in the Alkhorayef Group witnessed big developments whether natural, geographical or in its diversification of its activities. This has called for a re-emphasis of its identity and solidification of a united culture, giving it a collective feeling of belonging to one entity in view of its activities and regardless of geographical locations, range, different cultures of its employees and/or its customers.

This is in addition to establishing Alnakhil Paper Industries Company to produce carbonated paper and general paper trading. Third phase: This was the phase of concentration and growth, starting in 1995 with the focus on four main sectors:Machinery sector: Includes agricultural and marine equipment as well as irrigation systems, industrial machines and handling equipment. Oil sector: Entry to this sector was through oil pumps and related projects as well expansion in the region and the world. The Group also represents Castrol Lubricants and founded a company for that purpose.Water sector: Expansion in operation and maintenance contracts and development

of contracting projects in desalination stations and sanitation. Alkhorayef Maintenance and Operation Company merged into the contracting sector by establishing a company specialized in water and energy. The Group entered as strategic partners to implement mega projects and expand in this sector. Paper and printing sector: The merger of the Trans Orient Modern Machinery Company with Alnakhil Paper Industries created much expansion, focusing on these activities, and increasing investment in them and coming to occupy a distinguished position locally and internationally. Sheikh Bandar asserts the Group today ranks fourth in the world in the oil and irrigation pumps sector, owning the technology that is supported by large investments in the field of research and development and one of the pioneering companies in water and energy and printing and paper sectors in the Kingdom. Second: Studying commondenominators:The analytical studies for identifying common denominators clarified there are two important points: First, despite the variety in activities and geographical areas the Group covers, these were a natural continuation of these capacities created in the past and built upon. This may be a reason for the variety, assuring that the types of activities was not by chance, but a natural continuation of the accumulative experiences and explaining the rapid success in all sectors the Group works in. Second, because the Group offers integrated solutions with its products being assets to the production of its customers, its consequent responsibility becomes to ensure the function of these products and offer technical support and after sale services. Water pumps, plowing machinery, oil pump, water desalination stations or printing machines have production functions, and the success of the Group’s customers, and their profits or loss depends on such competences. The results of this analysis showed the strength of the Group, its solidity, interconnectiveness of its activities, participation in a unified culture that is based on the importance of being close to customers and not limiting its role to just selling products and expanding to offering integrated solutions. The logo’s design came to encapsulate the Group’s identity and culture, bond its activities and unite them under an identi-cal system; they all assume a unified form, with differences in color to differentiate between the various sectors. The design is made up of two parts, close to one another, different, yet forms one unit, reflecting the partnership between the Group and the others, they do not overlap, which mirrors mutual respect and graciousness, for the two appear as one whole beautiful form as if an invisible circle connects them.

He and his sons were able along with those who worked with them in the different activities and geographical locations to preserve these values summed up by the principles of trust, excellence, inclusion and commitment. It was clear from the previous two phases, that the Group has a strong culture based on a long relation with its customers, believing in the importance of this approach in achieving results and mutual successes. While browsing through Issue No. 41 of the Alkhorayef Magazine I read a news story of a donation made by Sheikh Saad to fund 50 students for technical specializations including those of electricity and operation of machinery at the Saudi Petroleum Services Polytechnic (SPSP). This played into my head to become a journalist, if only for once, with my apologies to the journalism profession which would not want me to be part of in spite of the fact that I am not passionate about it. Although donating one and half million riyals to the above mentioned institute is one of the noble gestures continuously offered by Alkhorayef Group, I was more interested in the 50 students themselves as I wrote previously on Islamic economic development which is based on four pillars, “human resource, capital, management and perfection”. There will be no development without the existence of the human element no matter how large the financial resource that is allocated to it is spent as it is the human being who is the objective of sound development. No matter how ingenious plans are or of the successful and experienced managements, there will be no development if the human element is not there. We see in the Muslim world huge assets and funds, development plans and executive managements, and yet complaints of corruption and flabbiness are increasing. Those who believe that perfection does not exceed charity or philanthropic work downsize perfection, which Allah meant for when He added perfectionists to His love and company. Allah All Mighty says, “Allah loves the well-doers” (Surat Al-Baqara: 195) or his saying “Allah loves the doers of good” (Surat Aal Imran: 134).Perfection is to worship Allah as if you see Him and even though you do not see Him, He sees you and on this grounding many things can be built up and that is for everyone to be good in his work and “workshop, in his car, camp, school, ministry, in his restaurant and clinic…etc” because Allah sees him. I hope all of the 50 selected students that were chosen become scientists. And if this wish does not come true, Alkhorayef’s sponsorship is an appreciated contribution to heighten their scientific level and then their work level. This can be seen as an active contribution in human resource development through encouraging those persons to bear their responsibilities, and be patient in their treatment of the obstacles they may encounter and continuously seek to achieve the goals that have been set for them. This is so that they become productive, committed to their work, able to achieve what they are responsible for, working to maintain and preserve tasks, perfecting their work, without being afflicted with lethargy, laziness and discontent whatever the professions they are working in. This is the perfection and excellence that is required which it is hoped will take hold in the hearts of those students so they become pillars in the building structure. I hope God willing, some of them would become scientists and experts in their specializations, and creative in their work. It is a blessed sponsorship as well as the donation of those 50 students.

A Father’s Journey to Be Proud ofThe Making of Alkhorayef Group

They are a group of people who made it by themselves, they had the far-sighted vision and futuristic outlook, who paved their way in life, climbing the ladder of glory and in generosity since their first steps unto the financial hierarchy by patience and calmness, neither in a hurry or in reversal, encouraged by the belief in God, Who bestows, and guarantees sustenance for his servants, making their honesty and integrity their slogan, spending their halal pennies which Allah promised to increase even if it is diminutive.It is on the shoulders of these people that the foundation of progress developed, standing strong, tall and high. I saw a number of them in Riyadh publishing their journeys in life through biographies and/or newspaper interviews, clarifying to the new generations their beginnings and the wealth they have acquired, and the state’s pride in them and their efforts in the development and progress of the country that was achieved in record time. My father Abdallah bin Ibrahim Alkhorayef was one of those people. He was living in Huraimla, cultivating a piece of land to provide for his family but never managing to achieve self-sufficiency despite his restless efforts and exhaustion. This of course never satisfied those who have high ambitions and wide horizons for fruitful work in line with their creative thoughts. But it was the difference between him and those with empty heads who do not dream of the capacity of the universe and its state of dilation, and don’t have the dynamism and aspiration to go forward. Allah says in the Holy Quran “Behold all that is in the heavens and on earth” (Surat Yunus: Ayat 101), a reminder from Allah to his servants to widen their thoughts and build the earth, with Him continuing: “It is He Who has made the earth submissive to you. Walk about in its lands and eat of His provision. To Him is the Resurrection” (Surat, Al Mulk: Aya 15). My father had a penetrating vision of a copious future and his attention turned to Riyadh, the capital of the state which everyone saw as becoming a center of commerce, a hub for civilization and science as it has the basis to satisfy the ambitions of those that are serious about work and launching themselves in life. If ambition drove the generation that preceded my father’s to migrate outside the territory, it is of

good omen Riyadh today, may have come the place for that migration for those that are serious and hardworking, especially since it is near Huraimla, so why not for a person to try his luck there! My father headed to Riyadh in the 1940s and of the little money he had, he brought dates, no more than 60 kilograms, sold them, and made more piasters. He continued like this for a while, during which he became known for his honesty and integrity among the merchants who came to trust him, and agreed to increase the quantities he bought from them while deferring payment. And so he was able to establish a small shop and his trade flourished as a number of date merchants in Al Ihsaa, Riyadh’s main supplier, established contact with him and used to send him dates based on trust, on the understanding that if he sold the staples, then he would pay the dealers. One of them was Sheikh Hamad Abu Ali, may Allah rest his soul, and their relation became long and strong. He later worked in real estate and the spring board for this was the establishment of a tiles and cement pipes factory in the 1950s. Then he looked to the agricultural sector to achieve self-sufficiency through investment in agricultural lands and water resources. He foresaw that the future was in agricultural projects because the

agricultural sector was being backed by the state. And he invested in wheat, melons and fodder in Al-Khraj in Al-Rughaib region in partnership with Abdallah bin Zaid Al-Ghunaim under the supervision of Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Mufarraj, may Allah rest his soul. The grand launch however was to be in expanding internationally. He contacted the Western Lin Company in the United States, which specialized in water pumping manufacturing and won its dealership to sell pumps and agricultural machinery. This project succeeded with the help of my brothers Ibrahim and Abdulrahman who consecutively joined my father after graduating from the Commerce and Accounting Faculty at King Saud University. Since then the work became well organized and planned. It was success after success, paving the way to enter into mega agricultural projects including Al-Wasee Project which he entered as a partner with Prince Abdallah Al-Faisal Al-Farhan and Sheikh Rashid bin Hamad Al-Rashid, may Allah rest their souls. Al-Wasee is more than 100 kilometers east of Riyadh and is vast. When my late father was asked about the investment requirements there he said: “To reap its produce and fruits one needs the patience of Ayyoub, wealth of Qaroun (Korah), and the age of Shoaib, (Jethro)”. Today it has come to fruition and has become one of the Alkhorayef Agricultural Company’s important projects. With the expansion of the projects, the company has been always interested in adopting the sons who went to school and those that are educated, specializing in studies appropriate to the needs of the company especially in leadership positions. Brothers Ibrahim and Abdulrahman took care of Saad and Mohammed and we formed the first generation who took upon their shoulders to develop and expand the company to enter the battle market with working experience and dynamism, contributing in many fields in the growth of agriculture, industry and engineering, locally and internationally. At the same time, the door opened to the second generation to enter the battlefield of work

according to studied specializations needed so that it would enable the company to continually develop in prosperity. My father, the founder, may Allah rest his soul, was keen for this parent company and its subsidiaries to remain a family concern with lofty ideals, free from emaciation and division, enriched by the sons and grandsons, developing through research, renovation and modernization as well as horizontal expansion to attract new projects while preserving the rights of all of the sons and grandsons, boys and girls to get their share of the profits. My father, thanks be to Allah, was reassured about the course of the company and its ascension. The sons too, bore the responsibility for developing it and raising it in stature. And why wouldn’t they, as they were raised by the builder, who was upright and knew of the goodness of God; this man appeased souls with unblemished money, generosity and open-handedness. Those sons became the aspired successors, who followed the same work approach. We have been infused with his straightforwardness, standing at God’s boundaries. We have won our father’s love and appreciation, and now it is time for him to hand the banner to his children. It is time for him to rest after a lifetime of toil and hard work. And as the poet says: “We build just like our forebears; We build and do what they used to do.”I want to point to a photo of my father, may Allah rest his soul, published in a Spanish newspaper when he visited the International Trade Fair in Barcelona in 1965. A newspaper published a photograph of my father during the visit as he was seen as one of the important Saudi businessmen but he didn’t know of it. His ophthalmologist Dr. Bracair who was treating him saw the photo after the return of my father, and sent it to him as a sign of loyalty to him.I pray that may Allah show mercy on my father and allows him to reside in His capacious heavens. It is our duty to pray for him and to give alms continually on his behalf as a sign of our love for him so that he is in perpetual ascension. Prophet

Mohammed (pbuh) said: “If the son of Adam dies, his deeds end except for three: alms giving, knowledge benefited from, and a righteous child who prays for him.”

As part of the Group’s concern to develop the skills of its employees in all fields, our colleague Khaled Yahya Al-Yahya from the Alkhorayef Group Company attended a human resource

training course. Such a course is part of those that are organized regularly so that employees taking part in them can be trained and rehabilitated in its subject matter.

Abdallah Al-Manna’ from Alkhorayef Industries Company (AIC) along with other employees attended a training course in English to improve their English speaking skills.

Our colleague Hamad Fahd Al-Tleihi from the Al-Khoareyf Group Company attended a training course in English language to improve his ability to carry out his duties that require good command of English easily and precisely. This is part of the Group’s policy to develop the performance of its employees through training courses in different areas including developing their English skills.

Our colleague Turki Ali Al-Shaqha from Alkhorayef Group Company attended a training course in the English language. The Group seeks to improve its employees’ English speaking skills that would help them to carry out their duties, especially those that require a good command of English.
