‘I’vebeeninvolvedintheBirdGroupsinceitstarted11yearsago’saysDerekTurner.‘IwasalsoafoundermemberoftheColwallVillageSocietyandearlyonwehadatalkbyanornithologist.Theattendancewashugeandthreeofus,allamateurbirdwatchers,wonderedifpeoplewouldbeinterestedincarryingoutbirdsurveys.Weheldameetinginthesmallroomofthevillagehall,andwellover40peopleturnedup!Eversincethenwe’vehadaround60localhouseholdsinvolved.Noteveryonedoesthesurvey,there’splentyofotheractivitiestoo.Threetimesayearwehaveatalkbyaguestspeaker,theyarealwaysfascinating,sometimesthey’vebeenabroadandhavewonderfulphotographs’.‘EveryyearinAprilweorganiseavisittoawetland.Inthepastwe’vebeentoSlimbridge,Newportandthistimewe’rere-visitingBrandonMarshnearCoventry.Wenormallycomebackhavingseenmorethanseventybreedsinasingleday.DuringawonderfulvisittoSandwellValley(RSPB)wesawfourkindsofwagtail,includingayellowandawhitewithinafewminutesofgettingthere’.Closertohome,thereareallkindsofbirdsandanimalstoseeonourdoorstep.‘IgotalovelycallacoupleofyearsagofromahouseclosetotherailwayinColwall’saysDerek.‘Idasheddownwithmy

cameratoseearedleggedpartridge.Sometimesweheadoutlocallyforsomebirdwatching.OverseveralweekstherewasaWaterRailthathadarrivedinanareajustbelow‘TheKettleSings’café.Normallytheyareonlyseenonopenwatersothiswasquiteunusual.Itsalsoraretoseethem;moreoftenyou’llonlyhearthem,theysoundlikeascreamingchild.Ifyoudomanagetoseethemtheylookveryungainly,almostasiftheymighttoppleover’.Sowhatisitaboutbirdsthatintereststhegroupsomuch?‘Itsdifficulttoexplain’saysDerek,‘butthe

songandthelookofabirdislovely.I’mafairlyrecentconvert,onceIbegantorealisehowfascinatingitwas.Wehelpnewcomerstothehobbywithadviceonbinocularsandwhattodo.Ontripswesetupatelescopeandhelppeople

toseethebirds.Theyquicklybecomefascinated.PersonallyIamstillverymuchalearnerbutit’sgreattovisitahide,listentotheexpertsandhearaboutwhattheyspot’.Locally,thegroupseesallkindsofbirdsasitcarriesoutitssurveys.‘WenowseeRedKitesinthearea,abirdthathadallbutdisappeared’.AsuccessfulbreedingprogrammeinWaleshasseentheredkitepopulationrecoverandspreadeastwardstoourpartoftheworld.‘Sometimestheycanbeenseensoaringoverthehills’saysDerek,‘ononeoccasionI’veseenthemasfareastasWorcester’.Thegroupstillcarriesoutregularsurveys.It’sverysimple.‘Wedotheminsixmonthlyruns’saysDerek,‘eachhouseholdhasasheetofpaperwithacolumnforeachmonth,iftheyseeabluetitondayonetheyputatickintherelevantbox.Itsstraightforwardanduncomplicated,butveryinterestingtoseetheresults.Whatweseeinthispartoftheworldalmostexactlymirrorstheresultsofnationalsurveysofgroupslike

Howdiditgetthename‘MonkeyIslandDreams’?Thename‘MonkeyIsland’originatesfromtheearly1850’swhentherailwayviaductinLedburywasbeingbuilt.Theworkersontheviaductswungdownonropeswhilebuildingitandwereknownas‘Monkeys’.ManyofthemlivedintemporaryaccommodationinWellingtonHeathandsothevillagebecameknownas‘MonkeyIsland’locally.Thiswasn’tacomplimentasthemenwereknownfortheirfightinganddrunkenness.Startinginthe1980’s,agroupofvillagersgottogethertoputonfunvillageeventsandtoraisemoneyforcharityunderthebannerof‘MonkeyIsland’.Thiswasverysuccessfulwiththousandsofpoundsraisedovertheyearsforlocalcharities.Itevenhaditsownnationalanthemwhichincludesthewords‘MonkeyIslandDreams’;itseemedanappropriatetitlefortheexhibition.
