Every year, workplace electrical hazards causes many injuries, deaths and property damage throughout the United States. One of the primary reasons of 90% of the electrical hazards at workplace are

Workplace Electrical Hazard Facts & Statistics

Every year, more than 300 deaths and 4000 injuries are recorded as a result of

workplace electrical hazard.

In United States, electrical hazards are ranked number 6 among all causes of work-related deaths.

Every day, workplace electrical hazards causes at least one fatality.

On an average, employee encountered with electrical hazard stays away from work for 13

days.

From 1992 to 1998, an estimated 32,807 nonfatal workplace electrical injuries were recorded and were classified as electrical shock and 38% as

electrical burns.

More than 46,000 workers were injured from workplace electrical hazards over the last 10

years.

Every day in U.S, a worker takes time off the job because of getting hurt so severely from electrical

mishap.

NFPA 70E

In order to reduce the number of electrical hazards at workplace, OSHA developed a

workplace safety standard code “NFPA 70E” to help companies and employees

stay protected against electrical hazards.

The most common workplace electrical hazards are shock, electrocution, arc flash,

and arc blast. The NFPA 70E also helps assisting compliance with OSHA 1910

Subpart S and OSHA 1926

Basic Workplace Electrical Safety

Make sure all new electrical systems are installed to OSHA requirements for electrical installations.

Providing enough socket-outlets for equipment in use is a must.

Be very careful with socket-outlets overloading - using adaptors can also cause

fire.

Cutting off power in emergency with a clearly identified and accessible switch (EMO Button -

Emergency Off)

Use nearby sockets for portable equipment to easily disconnect it in case of emergency.

USING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

Choose the right electrical equipment that is suitable for its working environment.

Ensure equipment safety and maintenance in a safe condition

Make sure any equipment used in flammable or explosive atmosphere must be designed in a way

that avoids sparks.

Small electrical equipment such as light bulbs and other small devices can be hazardous if broken.

Maintenance & Repairs

Make sure all equipment are fitted with rated fuse.

Always avoid wires inside a cable working loose from plugs or inside equipment by ensuring outer

sheaths firmly clamped.

Avoid insulating tape to repair cable cuts and go for complete replacement of damaged cable

sections.

Make sure you have the best connectors to join cable lengths.

Make sure all wire connections are secure.
