WAPITI WIND September 2021

Greetings Fellow Elks,

It is hard to believe that it is September already. The months of July and August have flown by. These months were very busy with Grand Lodge Convention, 4th of July Picnic and the 2-week clo-sure of the Lodge for our annual cleaning. The 4th of July Picnic was a huge success, and our employ-ees did an excellent job in the cleaning of the Lodge

during the shutdown. The month of July also saw the return of Popcorn to the Lodge.

August also saw us with many new members waiting to be initiat-ed. To all of you members who have, or are sponsoring these new members, Thank You, and keep up the good work.

We are and have been an “All American Lodge” many times over, and the competition to become an All-American Lodge is very stiff and one area that is judged is the Lodges contributions to the Elks National Foundation (ENF). Upon becoming a mem-ber, the Lodge donates your first contribution for you, and then it is up to you after that. There are many ways to contribute, one of them being the ENF Fidelity Club. You can enroll on-line at enf.elks.org/recurring. It will take you to an enrollment screen and you can designate a dollar amount which you would like to contribute on a monthly basis. Follow the directions. You may

also donate each year when you renew your membership dues. Any donations are voluntary and greatly appreciated. Easy, Peasy.

In September we have the Family Picnic on September 12th. This is always a good event, with good food, prizes (don’t forget to mail in your tickets or drop them off at the office), and enjoying your fellow Elks friendship. Hope to see you all there.

Remember, your Officers and Trustees are here to help keep the Lodge up and running as smoothly as possible. They must make decisions and as fellow Elks; we should abide by those decisions (whatever they are). I have said it before and I will continue to say it, if you want to make changes in the Lodge, you need to attend the regularly scheduled meetings to have your voice/opinion heard. Or you can take an active part in the operation of the Lodge by becoming an Officer or Trustee. The bar is not the place to discuss Lodge business.

Until next month, remain safe, and I hope to see you around the

Lodge.

Summer flew by in the blink of an eye. Now, we hit the ground running in preparation for all the events on the horizon. The Elkettes have a jam-packed agenda this fall and winter, we are beyond thrilled.

I want to thank Jo Black for the time and dedi-cation she has put into the Elkettes ongoing Jewelry fundraising. She carefully goes through all donated jewelry, polishes it if need be and artfully places it in the jewelry case. She recently received a necklace she felt deserved more attention than it would garner in the case. She sold raffle tickets and raised $700 to donate to a local charity. Congratulations to necklace winner Char Thomas, and runners up Jackie Ballard, Mo Long, and Rita Howell. Thank you to all who supported this fundraiser.

To the person who generously donated all the small bottles of hygiene products we thank you. They arrived at the perfect time; PER Debbie Herd, Chair of The Freedom Grant needed items to place in life saving backpacks for homeless veterans in our community. The backpacks will be handed out October 2, from 10:00am- 2pm in the Rods and Relics Hall at the Aquatic Center.

September 1st is the beginning of two Elkettes events. Sales for 52 Raffle tickets for the year 2022 begin. There are 300 total available for purchase, get them while the getting is good. Any Elkette will be happy to sell you a ticket. The money raised through this event goes to local charities. I would like to thank PER Pat Marino for bringing to my attention that I have not

posted the winners in the Wapiti, this problem has been recti-fied. The second event, The Elkettes Concert Series. Sunday, November 7 we will have two concerts, Elvis will grace the stage at 4pm for a 90 minute show, at 7pm Johnny Cash will perform for an hour. Tickets will be $30 for VIP, $25 for Gen-eral per person, per show. If you would like to purchase tickets for both shows it will be VIP $55, General $45 per person. Tick-ets will be sold Wednesday, September 1st at 3pm, first come first served. There is no presale available. We will be selling charcuterie boxes during the break.

The Giving Tree will be back this Christmas. Last year the Elks and Elkettes gifted 60 local foster children with an amazing Christmas. We ensured every child had a new coat, socks, un-derwear, pajamas, and socks. If you would like to make a dona-tion you can do so in the office. We will have names for chil-dren in November.

The Elkettes meeting is Tuesday, September 14 at 6pm, please note the time change. I look forward to seeing you there.

DID YOU KNOW? The first anniversary of the new Elks Lodge was celebrated with a dance and buffet on August 23rd, 1975. Even then there were problems with parking. The first parking lot was paid for in November 1976. The mortgage for that loan was burned in February 1977.

Welcome back to the Vagabonds. After being dark for the months of June, July and August, we are ready to start camping again. Many were traveling during the summer to escape the heat and some stayed behind to enjoy the benefits of our beautiful lake.

Hopefully all had a great summer.

We will begin our regular meetings again Wednesday, September 8th at 1:00. This meeting will have two major events: 1) we will present the plaque of appreciation to Donna Goodine for all Jim Goodine contributed to the Vagabonds and our Lodge and 2) we will be voting on the changes to the Bylaws and Standing Rules. If you plan to join us for lunch, be there no later than 11:45 so all can be served prior to the beginning of our meeting.

Our first campout will be in Williams at the Railside RV Ranch September 15th through the 18th leaving on the 19th. This will be hosted by Bill & Debbie Horton and Don & Sue Underwood. If you don’t already have your reservations for this, you should do so right away as this is always very well attended. They may be booked, however, ask to be put on the waiting list as they try very hard to accommodate our group. Their phone number is 928-635-4077.

Our outing for October will be in Wickenburg October 14th

through the 16th, leaving on the 17th. All reservations must be made through our Wagon Master, Janet Sims, as the RV Park does not want to take individual reservations. Her contact infor-mation is [email protected]. Payment will be made upon arri-val and must be cash or check. They do not accept credit cards.

We count on our members to organize our campouts. They pick the camping spot and let us know what there is to do in the area. If you have not hosted in the past, we are always willing to help. We are a fun group and that equates to a successful campout. Grab another couple as it’s always more fun to host with friends.

For those of you that are unaware, we have a wonderful website, www.elks2399.com. This was put together by Gary Parson, our Lodge Secretary and PER. In addition to having updated infor-mation about what is going on in our Lodge, there is a section for RV parking at the different Lodges. Under the tab for RV Park-ing, there is a link to all the different states. This is very helpful when traveling. Thank you, Gary!

I look forward to seeing many of you at our meeting in Septem-ber!

Marti Johnson, Vagabonds Secretary

Lake Havasu City Elks Lodge #2399 Drink Chips Policy

Per House Committee Meeting 8/10/2021 It was determined at the August House Committee meeting that there is a lot of confusion about our Drink Chip policy. The fol-lowing is what was approved by the Committee at that meeting. 1. Bartenders and Cocktail Waitresses will ask all customers

when takingan order if they are using a drink chip to pur-chase a beverage.

a. Bartenders and Cocktail Waitresses will turn in any chip used to purchase a beverage when the drink is poured and entered into the register.

2. Only one drink chip can be used per drink (2 Drink Chips cannot be used to purchase a more expensive beverage).

3. Volunteer Chips (Lodge, Kitchen, Bingo, Elkettes) can be used to purchase a beverage up to and including $5.00).

a. If a beverage cost is over $5.00, the customer will pay the difference in cash (upcharge). No Exceptions.

4. Yellow Drink Chips will no longer be sold by the Bartenders to customers wanting to purchase drinks for others.

a. Date Stamped tickets will be sold to those customers who wish to purchase drinks for others, in lieu of the yellow Drink Chips, and will only be valid for that day.

b. Bartenders and Cocktail Waitresses need to explain this to the customer wanting to purchase drinks for others.

5. Currently we have Drink Chips for the Kitchen Volunteers and the Elkette Volunteers, that do not identify the Drink Chip is from our Lodge.

a. New Drink Chips have been procured for the Kitchen and Elkettes Volunteers. The Lodge and Bingo Drink Chips are still valid as they already have our Lodge Number Embedded.

b. All Drink Chips now have our Lodge Number embedded in them.

6. Any old Drink Chips that are not embedded with our Lodge Number, will continue to be honored through March 31, 2022.

a. If a member would like to exchange the old Kitchen or Elkette Drink Chips for a new one, they may do so in the Office.

FROM THE BOARD

The Board of Trustees has been busy since we took office on April 1, 2021.

During the first week of August, while the Lodge was closed for deep cleaning, two mini-split air condition-ing units were installed in the kitchen at a cost of $10.350.00. This acquisition was fully funded by dona-tions. A big thank you to all of our clubs and to our members for their generosity. (We rock!)

The Trustees also accomplished the following items in the current fiscal year: Installation of a new Reverse Osmosis Water System for the dining room; new water filter system for the bar area; new LED lighting for our parking lot; new thermostat for the Women’s rest room; repaired the Lodge water softener; working with Serve-Pro to repair outside wall; revised the Moving Forward Board Donation form.

Your Board of Trustees volunteer their time to make our Lodge the best in the country and would love to hear from you so we can best represent you. (Suggestion box is located in the Bar Area).

I found this quote to be very interesting. “Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do and damned if you don't.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

Don't say "I should" say "I could".

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CHAIR:

As the newly appointed Lodge Member-ship Chair, I am seeking volunteers to assist me with Membership/Lapsation duties including calling members. Lodges cannot survive without members, so this is an important and vital commitment.

If you are interested, please contact me. I look forward to working with you. Gabriele Medley, [email protected].

The Lodge donated $400.00 to the LHHS Athletic Booster Club. The Booster Club supports the athletic programs, coaches, and athletes at Lake Havasu High School.
