Religious EducationIs Religious Education a Substitute for Regular Mass Attendance?

Reflections taken from Aleteia Newsletter - A Catechist’s Perspective Part 3 of 3

Let’s look at the third reason why Mass is the best way to ground your children in the faith.

The Eucharist is like the sun.

We used to go to Children’s Adoration every month. It was a lively crowd, with kids ranging from 12 to newborn. Some of us had toddlers, and we spent the whole ‘adoration time’ wandering up and down the sides of the church while our children babbled to us about the Stations of the Cross. Father didn’t mind. “The Eucharist is like the sun.” he’d say. “When you go outside, it doesn’t matter if you run around, fall asleep, or read a book. You still get a suntan. You don’t have to be paying attention to be changed. Jesus is like that. When you spend time in his presence, he changes you, even if you’re not thinking about him.” When you take your children to Mass, you’re giving Jesus the chance to change them, to work on their hearts, and to prepare them for the sacraments. Mass is the single most essential part of sacramental preparation. Without it, nothing we do in the classroom matters. If you don’t already have this habit (or if you try to avoid taking the kids whenever possible), maybe this year is a good time to give it a try. And then try again, a few more times. If nothing else, do it as a favor for their future catechists. Take all of them, even the small ones, to Mass. (Aleteia Org)

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-4)Featured Quote from Pope Francis

“Each person is precious; persons are more important than things, and the worth of an institution is measured by the way it treats the life and dignity of human beings, particularly when they are vulnerable, as in the case of child migrants....

We need to work towards protection, integration and long-term solutions.”- Pope Francis, Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2017

For more information on the Seamless Garment, please contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson: 205.565.3456, [email protected].

Our school’s running club (a middle school elective) competed in the Magic City 5K and five of the eight students who ran placed in their age groups! Two students took first places and another took third place. POP Phys Ed teacher, Amy Browne, trained the runners twice a week for one semester by running distance and doing strength, cardio, and agility workouts. Congratulations to the student athletes and to Mrs. Browne!

POP Church’s Middle School Youth Group assembled 150 care packages for the men and women served by the Church of the Reconciler in Birmingham and delivered them,

along with a Bread and Roses ministry meal! The POP MOMs ministry donated handmade crocheted hats to accompany all of the toiletry items that were generously given by POP Parishioners. Thank you to the MSYG leader, Corey Kappler, and all of the students’ parents who helped to provide such a great service and learning opportunity during Advent to the students.

Prince of Peace Presents an Interfaith Trialogue Celebrating Mutual Respect and Kindness

A priest, a rabbi, and an imam will explore their common heritage as children of Abraham in a public forum at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on Thursday, January 26, at 7:00 pm. (Please RSVP to [email protected].)

All are welcome to this trialogue on Muslim, Jewish, and Christian interpretations of Scripture, as embraced initially in the Catholic Church's Vatican Council II document, Nostra Aetate. This 1965 document, which declared the relation of the Catholic Church to non-Christian religions, is extremely relevant today. The panel discussion will be moderated by Sr. Mary McGehee, OSB, retreat and spiritual director at the Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center in Cullman. The panelists will answer audience questions after their ten minute presentations.
