‘I CAN WORK’ PILOT PROJECT – UPDATE

Our pilot project has taken another exciting step with placements due to start at Emerald Publishing Group, Bingley and Haworth Medical Centre April/May. Staff at both organisations have received awareness training and have been supported to build a relevant job role for the young employee. We have also been trying to attract volunteers to become part of our growing support team needed to support the placement so that it is successful.

Can you help please? If you would like to volunteer your help to support a young person within the work place we would love to hear from you. Ideally we are seeking experienced, semi retired professionals who can offer one to two days each week and who are confident to support not only the young person but also staff at the work place to ensure all involved are working together to make the placement a success. Please contact the office for details.

TRANSITION EVENINGS AT OUR CENTRE

Tackling the difficult question of what comes next

During March we ran two transition evenings at our centre. The first detailed transition from primary to secondary school. We discussed the different options available and the pros and cons of each weighing up mainstream and various specialist provisions, questions to ask, what courses may be studiedn and transport; encouraging parents to make plans. There is still so much work to do to make main-stream secondary school a realistic and good option in Bradford. Following the meeting we wrote to Bradford Education expressing our concerns at the lack of DSP (designated special provision) within mainstream schools and the lack of resources and training within mainstream secondary schools to support good inclusion and education.

The second evening focussed on transition from secondary school to college and employment. Fifteen parents attended representing young people from mainstream schools, DSPs, special schools, college and in home education. We discussed various options; college, adult social care placement, such as Mind The Gap and supported work placements. Again there are still many issues to be challenged; such as why can’t the children in mainstream stay on into sixth form provision? Both evenings tackled issues that many parents find difficult to address and therefore both evenings will be followed up with a second meeting later this year. Many thanks to the staff and additional volunteers at the WisH Club who entertained some of the young people while the meeting took place. See page 6 for further relevant articles and opportunities.

Consultation on sufficiency of SEND

Placements - PLEASE HAVE YOUR SAY

DEADLINE 11th APRIL

The Local Authority has a statutory duty to keep under review the provision it makes for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) whilst also ensuring there are sufficient specialist places available to meet the needs of the growing SEND population.

Bradford has experienced a significant increase in demand for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision in the last 10 years. It is projected that the demand for SEND provision in Bradford will continue to grow and it has been identified that additional specialist places across all sectors in the Bradford District are required. This initial consultation is to share and gather information on the development of further specialist provision places to enhance the current specialist provision offer across the District.

To maximise the opportunities for expansion and creation of new provision within budget they are looking at the possibilities of expanding and re-configuring existing provision.

In 2017/18 a consultation was undertaken to increase SEND provision and the developments below were agreed in April 2018:

• 116 additional maintained Special School Places

• 54 additional Designated Specialist Provision (DSP) places in maintained schools

• 28 additional Early Years Enhanced Specialist Provision (EYESP) places

• 74 additional Academy Special School places

• 23 additional Designated Specialist Provision (DSP) places in academy schools

• 40 additional PRU places

In 2019/2020 they propose to further increase the amount of specialist places available by 354. They are seeking your views on all of this. Please take a few minutes to answer their short questionnaire by following the link; https://surveys.bradford.gov.uk/snapwebhost/s.asp?k=155257901249

If you would prefer a paper copy of this questionnaire or any of the documents, please telephone 01274 438260 or email [email protected].

PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS

They are also holding a number of public consultation meetings:

• Tuesday, 9 April, 5:30pm to 7pm, Margaret McMillan Tower, Bradford BD1 1NN

• Tuesday, 9 April, 10am to 11.30am, Keighley Library Annexe, Spencer Street, Keighley BD21 2BN

BRADFORD CONSULTATION

INTO EARLY HELP https://bradford.moderngov.co.uk/mgConsultationDisplay.aspx?ID=178 Bradford Council wants your views on its proposed changes to where they deliver Prevention and Early Help services for babies, children, young people and families across the District. This includes the children’s centres. The proposal looks at which buildings are currently used to deliver these services, and how the Council could use these buildings more effectively in the future. This could allow for more money to be spent on staff to support families rather than on buildings. The consultation closes on 7 May 2019.
