The text usually
follows verse
form or rhymes.
It typically ends
up feeling very
rhythmic.
Writers often think
about this as
theyre making up a
new dramatic
poem, becausethey want a person
to be able to deliver
the lines well, and
because they wantthe audience to
understand whats
happening.

a character speaks mainly to
himself, not interacting with
anyone else.
It typically is a good way to
quickly show what he thinks,
wants or is going to do,
because it gives insights into
his mind.
The best example comesfrom William Shakespeares
tragic play, Hamlet, in which
Hamlet questions whether it
is better to live or die.

It is very similar to a soliloquy in that
it reveals something about the
speaking character.
The main difference is that, the actor
is talking to someone else in the play,
not just himself.
This second person doesnt sayanything, but their presence often
makes the speech a little bit more
believable.
This type of dramatic poetry usuallyshows up during critical moments in
the plot.

NURSERY RHYMES
A nursery rhyme is a short rhyming story, often set to music and
usually designed for young children.
Songs for children often serve as an oral record of important
political and historical events.
They also can preserve archaic forms of language.
In the English language, the bulk of commonly used nursery rhymesdate from the 16th-18th centuries, with some originating in Europe
and others, such as Mary Had a Little Lamb.

Nursery rhymes are often used to help young children build their
vocabulary.
Counting is often integrated into nursery rhymes.
They also show children how to find and keep a beat, and they can
be used to get children to start reading.
When a child learns a nursery rhyme, he or she also can learn to
follow it on a page, so many children learn the fundamentals of
reading this way.
