As the twelve days of Christmas lead us into Epiphany in the new year, we celebrate the central message found in the Nativity of our Lord. This is the message of the Incarnation. Incarnation comes from Latin, meaning “in the flesh.” The Incarnation means that the Creator of the cosmos has an eternal destiny for us; the universe actually has a purpose! God became one of us as the Holy Child of Bethlehem, Jesus the Christ himself. The extension of the doctrine of the Incarnation is that our material world has a value and purpose in God’s eyes. Thus, what we do in the here and now does matter. In fact, our actions have eternal signifi- cance. With that in mind, what are we going to do as a parish in 2014? How should we enhance and de- velop the Christian formation program? How best can we incorporate our new members into the ministries and life of our parish? Do we have enough fellowship opportunities? Outreach opportu- nities? How about the recruitment and training of the essential volunteer base for the Altar Guild, lectors, lay eucharistic ministers, acolytes, and intercessors? What kind of special music and worship programs will we offer? How about a systematic planned giving program and a year-round engagement with stewardship? Surely there is a multitude of ministries on which we ought to focus our attention. What should our priorities be in 2014? What kind of church do we want to be by next Christmas? The Vestry and I will mull over these questions during our Mutual Ministry Review in January as we set the goals and objectives for this new year. I encourage you to let us know what you think we should focus on in the new year. Apart from our corporate goal-setting, we can set goals individually as well for our spiritual lives. Do you have a plan for the new year for your spiri- tual life? There are many ways to prepare for spiri- tual growth. One way is to establish for ourselves a spiritual Rule of Life. Think about this suggested format: I resolve to attend Sunday Holy Eucharist at least (how many times) a month, with God’s help. I resolve to read selections from the Bible (Sun- day lectionary, one-year Bible reading plan, etc.) at least (how many times) a month, with God’s help. I resolve to read a book on Christian spirituality (the rector can suggest titles) at least (how many times) a year, with God’s help. I resolve to support the work of the parish by time (when?), talent (which ministry?), and treasure (pledge or giving as able), with God’s help. I resolve to help those in need by volunteering (Food Pantry, Angel tree, Lighthouse Shelter, etc.) at least (how many times) a year, with God’s help. God has created time, seasons, and rhythms in life for us. Our spiritual life also needs to follow a certain rhythm or structure if we want to grow. Spiritual growth does not come out of the blue. We must be intent on working toward spiritual maturity. Likewise, the corporate spiritual life of our parish won’t just happen without a collaborative strategy and plan. We must base the plan for the parish on our common vision. There is no better time for us to do that than at the beginning of the new year. Unlike other types of planning, spiritual plan- ning must begin with grace—God’s grace given to each of us. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians makes the point clear: “…grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Ephe- sians 4:7. The Rector’s Letter

Dearly beloved in Christ,

Joy to the world! The Lord is come! Asthe twelve days of Christmas lead us intoEpiphany in the new year, we celebrate the

central message found in the Nativity of our Lord. This is the message of the Incarnation.

Incarnation comes from Latin, meaning “in theflesh.” The Incarnation means that the Creator of thecosmos has an eternal destiny for us; the universeactually has a purpose! God became one of us as theHoly Child of Bethlehem, Jesus the Christ himself. The extension of the doctrine of the Incarnation isthat our material world has a value and purpose inGod’s eyes. Thus, what we do in the here and nowdoes matter. In fact, our actions have eternal signifi-cance.

With that in mind, what are we going to do as aparish in 2014? How should we enhance and de-velop the Christian formation program? How bestcan we incorporate our new members into theministries and life of our parish? Do we haveenough fellowship opportunities? Outreach opportu-nities? How about the recruitment and training ofthe essential volunteer base for the Altar Guild, lectors, lay eucharistic ministers, acolytes, andintercessors? What kind of special music andworship programs will we offer? How about asystematic planned giving program and a year-roundengagement with stewardship? Surely there is amultitude of ministries on which we ought to focusour attention.

What should our priorities be in 2014? Whatkind of church do we want to be by next Christmas? The Vestry and I will mull over these questions during our Mutual Ministry Review in January aswe set the goals and objectives for this new year. Iencourage you to let us know what you think weshould focus on in the new year.

Apart from our corporate goal-setting, we canset goals individually as well for our spiritual lives.Do you have a plan for the new year for your spiri-tual life? There are many ways to prepare for spiri-tual growth. One way is to establish for ourselves aspiritual Rule of Life. Think about this suggested

format:• I resolve to attend Sunday Holy Eucharist at

least (how many times) a month, with God’shelp.

• I resolve to read selections from the Bible (Sun-day lectionary, one-year Bible reading plan, etc.)at least (how many times) a month, with God’shelp.

• I resolve to read a book on Christian spirituality(the rector can suggest titles) at least (how manytimes) a year, with God’s help.

• I resolve to support the work of the parish bytime (when?), talent (which ministry?), andtreasure (pledge or giving as able), with God’shelp.

• I resolve to help those in need by volunteering(Food Pantry, Angel tree, Lighthouse Shelter, etc.) at least (how many times) a year, withGod’s help.God has created time, seasons, and rhythms in

life for us. Our spiritual life also needs to follow acertain rhythm or structure if we want to grow.Spiritual growth does not come out of the blue. Wemust be intent on working toward spiritual maturity.

Likewise, the corporate spiritual life of ourparish won’t just happen without a collaborativestrategy and plan. We must base the plan for theparish on our common vision. There is no bettertime for us to do that than at the beginning of thenew year.

Unlike other types of planning, spiritual plan-ning must begin with grace—God’s grace given toeach of us. Vestry and Parish News: Annual Meeting February 2, 2014

On this first Sunday of February, the congregationwill meet immediately after the one service ofthe day for the Annual Meeting. To encourage

greater attendance at the annual meeting, the Rector andthe Vestry decided to hold one service only, beginningat 9:00 am in the Brick Church, a compromise designedto accommodate both the Chapel folks who prefer anearly (8:00 am) service and the Brick Church SundaySchool and music fans.

Plan now to attend the meeting to hear reports(short!) of our achievements in 2013; to elect newVestry members, and to meet our new members

The Vestry Search Committee (Vestry membersRobert Allen-Emerson, Anne Buffington, and BradHersey, who will complete their terms at the end ofJanuary, as well as Kate Fox and Joe Annillo) began inSeptember to seeking qualified parishioners willing tofill the three upcoming vestry openings. On December 5,they voted unanimously in favor of the following slateof candidates: Kathy Kenney, Esq., Betty Evans, andDr. Robert Binner. The by-laws require that thesenames be published with short bios of the candidates. We already know Betty Evans and Kathy Kenney asformer Vestry members who have agreed to serve a newterm.

Dr. Robert Binner is a native of Buffalo, New York, who came to All Hallows from Holy Family. He hasbeen practicing anesthesia since 1985, and has been athis current position at Johns Hopkins Bayview since2007. He and his wife Madelaine have two grownchildren, Josh and Beth.

The Vestry also approved Fred Allen as the newtreasurer of the parish. Jim Vrancik has been showinghim the specifics of the job as Fred is very competentwith numbers and banking. We are lucky he came herefrom Texas (thanks, Michelle Allen-Emerson!).

Father Alistair presented the out-going Vestrymembers with gift prayer books as thanks for theirservice.

Thanks to our extremely competent BudgetCommittee, Treasurer Jim Vrancik, Endowment ChairJoan Placido, Senior Warden Kate Fox, Junior WardenRich Johnson, Mike Power, Patrick Sullivan, and FatherAlistair, the Parish’s financial outlook is looking betterthan it has in ages. After years of a dismaying downwardspiral, we seem to have turned the corner, reducedexpenses, and most important, begun to reduce thedrawdown from the investment portfolio to coveroperating expenses. At its December meeting, the Vestryvoted unanimously to approve the proposed budget, for

presentation to the congregation at the Annual Meeting. The Rector and the Senior Warden designated the

third Sunday of each month as Appreciation Sunday todemonstrate our gratitude for our unsung heroes whoaccomplish many unseen good works for the Parish. OnDecember 15, Father Alistair presented Nick Jones andJim Vrancik with certificates of appreciation. Nick cameout the night before the Thanksgiving Eve service toovercome the darkness on the Brick Church campus intime for the Davidsonville Community EcumenicalThanksgiving Service. Almost all our exterior campuslighting was out and we had a potential public relationsfiasco as members of the other churches would stumblethrough the dark to find our door. Nick saved us bytracing the problem to a blown GFI outlet and restoredpower to our lights just in time.

Jim Vrancik retired as Treasurer at the end ofDecember in a blaze of glory, having persuaded the IRSthat we had filed all their required forms and should notbe fined for failure to do so. AND, he reconciledaccounts with the Diocese to show that we have fullypaid into the Church Pension Fund, so we will becredited $4,400 in 2014. He voluntarily took on the work(for which we had been paying a fee) to unravel thedisarray he inherited from the former bookkeeper, whofell ill, and Jim trained Eileen to handle this job. He hassaved the Parish a lot of money.

The congregation is invited to nominate additionalunsung heroes for recognition in subsequent months.

Fr. Alistair invited Canon Scott Slater from theDiocese to facilitate a Mutual Ministry Review, in whichthe Rector and the Vestry discuss and recognize theirachievements and new goals to be met in the comingyear. We will hold it at Davidsonville United MethodistChurch for most of Saturday, January 18.

Please take care not to trip over the dislodgedgravestone in the walkway at the Brick Church, movedthere for planned cleaning and restoration of one of theoldest stones we have. Weather permitting, it may becompleted by the time you read this, and this is the lastcemetery stonework to be scheduled until spring.

Stewardship flourishing in faith!A happy note from our Stewardship Chairman, Patrick O. Sullivan

As of Christmas, we are stillgratefully receiving pledgecards, so if you did not have

a chance to update us regardingyour 2014 intentions, it’s not toolate to pledge. Simply drop yourpledge card in the weekly offeringplate or mail it to the Parish Of-fice. If you need a pledge card orare in need of any stewardshipassistance, contact the Parish Of-fice or Patrick and we will be gladto help. Sometimes it’s nice tohave envelopes as a reminder forthe special offerings that occurduring the year. If you would liketo have a box, contact the parishoffice, e-mail Patrick Sullivan atposullivan4 @verizon.net, or callor text Patrick at 301-502-1725.

We are very excited that ourpledge total has exceeded the 2014goal of $160,000. As of December26, we are over $164,000 andcounting. With your continuedhelp we will be able to close thegap between our pledge incomeand expenditures. We hope to re-duce the withdrawals from theendowment portfolio to a sustain-able amount; pledges will enablethis to happen.

All Hallows Parish thanks allwho pledged for their support inthe year ahead. Their sacrificialoffering enables us to worshiptogether, educate each other, tohelp those in need, and to shareour faith with one another.

The pledges support the oper-ating budget of regular expendi-tures for the parish: staff salaries, office supplies, cleaning, trashcollection, etc., and maintenanceof our historic buildings—theBrick Church (1730-ish), theChapel (1860), Rectory (1760sand 1850s), and the yellow house(1850-60) next door to the Cha-pel. The Rectory and the YellowHouse are now rentals that pro-vide income to the parish.

We are equally grateful to thedonors who earmark their giftsfor specific projects and minis-tries such as the Altar Guild,Food Bank, music program, andcemetery maintenance, among themany programs of this very activeparish.

Via MediaEducation, dinner, fellowship, worship!

January 9 - February 27

All Hallows will host a Via Media series on Thursdayevenings over an 8-week period between Epiphanyand Lent: January 9 through February 27, 2014, at

the Brick Church, 6:00 pm until 8:30. This program isfully funded by a grant for Ministry from the Diocese ofMaryland.

Via Media is a video-enhanced education series opento anyone who is curious or interested in the Episco-pal/Anglican tradition; a Christian formation curriculumdesigned to proclaim the Good News of God in ChristJesus and to present the Episcopal Church in a contempo-rary context; celebrates who we are as American Angli-cans and invites others to “come and see,” offeringseekers both the content and the context for conversationsabout Christian faith; invites those seeking spiritualcommunity to explore Anglican Christianity through anon-threatening course of study, prayer, and conversationsurrounded by radical hospitality.

Each session begins with a meal and is followed bya short video about important issues affecting the churchand society and is conducted by a facilitator. A portion ofthe class is dedicated to open discussion and conversa-tion.

Get involved and be inspired by your faith. TheEpiscopal Church has so much to offer and we want ourcongregation members to experience the true colors ofour faith tradition. We also encourage members to bringalong friends and family members who have unansweredquestions about our faith. Don’t be passive about yourfaith. Learn about it, understand how it evolved, most ofall, learn to love it and be proud of what it stands for.

The Via Media program is sponsored by a grant fromthe Episcopal Diocese of Maryland to All Hallows. Spaceis limited and we are opening the program to peoplebeyond All Hallows. Please enroll by e-mail [email protected] or by phone 410-798-0808 toreserve your spot in this exciting new program.

Forming Christians

All Hallows’ Christian Formation programs arestupendous! Our Sunday School is growing aseveryone at the 10:30 service seems to enjoy theonce-a-month family Eucharist on the Second

Sunday. Not only is it instructive for the children, butsometimes it is very exciting for the adults. You shouldhave seen Meredith McQuoid-Greason leap from herpew to rescue the tilting Advent Wreath on December 8!Who knew she could fly?

There are enough service tasks to provide nearlyevery child the opportunity to shine—the outdoor bellringer, usher/greeters, acolytes, streamer and torchbearers—taking turns as they wish. Our young Lectorsand Intercessors are learning to speak before a crowdwith ever-improving diction and delivery. The gradeschoolers are preparing for training as Acolytes. Eventhe little ones are learning to volunteer their answers toFr. Alistair’s questions as they sit in the Chancel duringhis homily.

The Sunday School pageant was a joyful andworshipful event on Christmas Eve, as they enacted theGospel story with a script arranged by Aleah Mathews, taking us from the Annunciation through the arrival ofthe Wise Men—Riley Foran (also the prophet Isaiah),Ryan Hart (also the prophet Micah), and Kevin Patter-son (also a shepherd).

Narrators Natalie Mason and Heidi Tine were also inthe Angel Host led by Head Angel Lottie Allen-Emer-son. Narrators Andrew Emmons and Linda Johnsondoubled as shepherds leading their shepherd crew ofGrayson Hersey, Evan Hart, Declan Foran, WillDougherty, Kevin Patterson, and Sam and MatthewSimpson, watching over their wandering flock of sheepand lambs—Finley Foran, Lulu Hersey, Addison Jones, and Maggie Dougherty. Narrator George Lovell was alsoa Priest. Skylar Deichmann (King Herod) also doubledas a shepherd. Lainagail Greason was a stentorian AngelGabriel speaking to Mary, acted by Grace McQuoid whospoke loud and clearly in her gentle response, whileGavin Foran as Joseph stood by attentively and brought the manger on cue.

The Parish continues to offer life-broadening oppor-tunities for our middle- and high school students as well.Members of our Youth Group will travel to New Yorkon January 10 to participate in the Episcopal NightWatch at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine just off113 Street near Morningside Park. (Among the recentth

burials in the Cathedral is James Gandolfini.) Attendingany event in a great cathedral is an impressive andmoving experience. After spending the night in theCathedral, they will tour the city on Saturday.
