    Friendliness, pies and Kruse FarmMarket

A well-known farm market in GardenValley has become a traditional stop forpeople seeking local produce, bakedgoods and regional gifts.

It has been quite a family journeyfrom the original 15 acres Don and

Joanies parents, Bert and Alice Kruse, bought in 1923, to the farm and farmmarket that Kruse Farms has today. The farm has been in operation for thepast 82 years. The market, located at532 Melrose Road, was added in 1988.

Family members over the years havecontributed to the business. Theyinclude Don and Sally Kruse, brothersJeff and Denny Kruse, Joanie KrusePeterson and nephew Mark Christian, who helps with field work and the deliv-ery of produce to other farm markets.

Jeff Kruse now serves as a state sena-tor and works in the family business.

A complete line of produce causesmouths to water as customers also takein the variety. A bakery, the inspirationof Joanie Kruse Peterson, has been a hitwith customers. All the pies, cakes, cookies, nut brittles and salsa are madefrom scratch with recipes developed forthe bakery.

People really like the pies, SallyKruse said.

They like the idea that everything ismade fresh everyday and that the local

produce is picked fresh daily.Dairy products, breads and soft

drinks are available. There is a gift shopfull of Pacific Northwest items including jams, syrups, and other products withthe Kruse Farm label.

Kruse Farms full-time and seasonalemployees, 22 in all, are friendly and

The latest addition to the market is agreenhouse complex. A variety of flow-ers, hanging baskets, patio planters andbedding plants are there with moststarted by early January. Fall is also afun time at the market. There is apumpkin patch and corn maze. Chil-dren of all ages can enjoy hayrides tothe pumpkin patch. The market nowhas Umpqua Valley lamb & EmeraldHills group beef. Also Monte SmithsThe Dog Housewill be at the farm.

Business makes a clean sweep withhigh-quality vacuums

Picking out the right vacuum can be achallenge these days. With so manyfeatures to choose from it can be hardto decide.

Problems like that dont last longafter a visit with Ran the Vac Man at1561 S.E.Stephens Street. StoreownerRann Morris straightens out the choicesin a jiffy.

We sell the best and service therest. He said. I know we sell a productthat meets peoples needs with every-thing from top quality to moderatelypriced vacuums.

Ran the Vac Man carries Royal, Eure-ka, Sanitaire, Sebo and Dirt Devil vacu-ums. While he sells other brands, hes

quick to say that he doesnt specializein them, but he can fix them.We have no quarrel with those who

sell for less, he joked. They shouldknow what their product is worth.

When new dust bags, belts or lightbulbs are needed,Morris almost alwayshas what is needed with his full line ofreplacement parts.

Morris wasnt always Ran the VacMan. He bought the business in 1975

after making the decision to get out ofthe wholesale food industry following a16-year career. He said he thought

about running a grocery store. Then herealized that would be a seven-days-per-week job. It wasnt for him.

I didnt know a thing about vacuumcleaners, but I self-learned using techni-cal books, he said. Now I pretty muchknow all about it.

Servicing has gotten a bit more com-plicated since vacuums are designedtoday to filter the air better to improvethe indoor environment.

I think thats a good thing and theyare trying to make vacuums more con-venient to use, he said. I like to keeptrack of the trends and thats reflectedin the vacuums Im offering.

Ranns daughter, Mary Carpenter, helps out part time. She repairs andsells vacuum cleaners and is also a self-taught repair technician, with some

help from her dad.Rann said his daughter caught onpretty quick and has been working withhim for about 13 years.

Looking back on it, he thinks he madethe right choice when he became Ranthe Vac Man.

I really like the people, he said. Tobe able to serve them is something Ireally enjoy.

Whitestone Vitamin was the result ofa long held wish to create a place thatoffered people health and wellness in

this very unhealthy time in our society.Linda Neuschwander also wanted togive her friend, Diana Schrock, a placeto do what she loves and does best. She is, after all,Lindas healing angel.Diana got Linda through a very difficulttime in her life and Linda can say forsure that Diana had a huge impact onher survival. Diana and Linda have beenfriends for years, in fact, their sons werebest friends all the way through school.

The timing was right for Diana lastspring, so the hunt was on to find a

place to call home for Whitestone Vita-min. It took a few months but finally, just up the street from Nanas, a placebecame available. Having the two busi-nesses just a block apart was most con-venient for Linda.

Linda is very blessed that Lori Fallsdecided to come on board as well, sonow Whitestone offers the most experi-enced ladies with the most heart andcare for their customers in town.

The store as a whole has been verywell received by the community andhealth care providers in town. Their cus-tomers love the atmosphere and thestaff, and the Whitestone staff feels veryblessed to receive so much supportfrom the local community.

Linda Neuschwander is a home grownlady, born and raised in Roseburg,OR.The daughter of Robert & Betty Miller,Linda began looking for a businessopportunity in Roseburg in 2005 anddeveloped Whitestone Investments,LLCas a place to start. Always looking foradventure, in August of 2006,Lindafound a small tea house in Roseburg onCass Avenue that was for sale and feltdrawn to the idea of a restaurant.Downtown Roseburg has a very strongpull for her, because growing up here inthe fifties and sixties, downtown was allthere was. Linda had no background inthe restaurant business and now laughs

at how nave she was to think it cant berocket science to get a sandwich andsoup to the table. In the course of the

last year and a half, she has come to theconclusion its a strong second to rock-et science. It has been a journey. Theystumbled a few times, but when shesees where Nanas is today, she feelsextremely proud that her vision hasbecome reality and it is so well receivedby her customers.

Its funny, but with all the decisionsthat are required to start a business, what you call it can be one of the mostdifficult. Lindas granddaughters, Hai-ley and Jessaca Neuschwander, can becredited with helping Nana come upwith the name for the restaurant. It justcame down to the most logical; it was, after all,Nanas place.

Nanas has been described by theircustomers as a hidden treasure indowntown Roseburg between theatmosphere, menu, and most impor-tantly, the staff. The menu is not exactlywhat you would expect from a deli, butLinda wanted to create something just astep off and a step up from a traditionaldeli. Her customers love the friendlywarm reception they receive, the deli-cious and unusual soups, the sandwich-es and wraps, and the signature dessert(Lemonberry Jazz). The staff has beentrained extensively as baristas and is

happy make your favorite blended orhot drink.

rens have remained very close friendsover the years.

Frank Bartley,Doloresbrother, retiredfrom the US Army in 1982 and Frankand his wife Jere joined Hanson Jewel-ers.These additions allowed Alf to semi-retire and pursue other interests.

Continuing in the family tradition, theBartleys purchased Hanson Jewelersfrom Alf and Dolores in 2000.Frank &Jere expanded their store and opened asecond store on Jackson Street in Rose-burg Town Center a year later. The Bart-leys consolidated both stores into theone Roseburg location in 2006.

One look in the display shelves atOakland Wood Products and you knowthat you are in a family business seriousabout wood crafts and services. Hand-lathed pens and chopping blocks sosmooth that they reflect the sunlightrest next to hand-made wooden bowlsand tools. Most are the products of theowners and their family. And its fittingthat a family that has been built aroundwood and construction for over 19 years(not to mention two generations)should find their passion hand in handwith their work.

Now,a definition is in order herebecause when it is said that the busi-

ness is familyit is meant in the large-ness of the word. Most days Terry, who previously

worked as a cabinet maker and privatecontractor, and his wife,Jane Knowlton, can be found at the store. But you willalso find Terrys nephew Brian and hisfianc Amy there. Terry and Janes twochildren help out with more than justcreating beautiful handcrafted items, even though they are only 15 and11years old, and Terrys dad and mother, both avid wood workers themselves, help out at the store as often as they

can. Janes parents have been known tomake appearances too, which is greatsince it was at a construction site ofJanes fathers that Terry and Jane firstmet.

So while you will find a lot of experi-ence,humor and always a friendlyatmosphere, you will never find a lack ofvariety. The Knowltons carry a varietyof wood working tools for both hobby-ists and professionals, and can specialorder any that they dont have on hand. They also have Wilsonart laminatecounter tops, hardwood and laminateflooring, and real natural stonecladding. Terry specializes in customlumber work and owns a small portablesaw mill, edger and wood drying kiln. They have piles of 2x4's and 4x4 postsready for your summer projects. If youlook around though you are just as likelyto see a red and black piece of Macas-sar Ebony or Mango leaning against thewall. Lengths of Bass wood rest in acorner and in the back of their storeBurls, planks of Teak, Purple Heart andother exotic woods wait patiently for theperfect project to call their names.

And if you ask her, Jane will admit, somewhat sheepishly, that the woodentoys are still her favorite .

Unbelievable as it is to us, and withthanks to our wonderful staff and our equal-ly wonderful customers, we are looking for-ward to our 50th anniversary next year.

We were not quite ready to open ourdoors to the public when the Roseburg blasthappened back in 1959.We were asked if wecould open early and help out with our serv-ices, so we did,3 days after the blast.

We started small with our store beingaround 1300 sq.ft. and employing onlythree people, one of them being me,PhilKaser. I can remember my wife coming tothe store with my three girls and bringingmy evening meal. She would go up front andwork the gift counter and leave the threegirls on a blanket on the pharmacy floorwith me.In between filling prescriptions, Iwould get to talk and play with my girls. Inthose days I worked long hours, as many as80 hours a week,so getting to interact withmy girls and wife in the evenings were spe-

cial times. Now,after many years, and enlargingthree times, our store is 5000 sq. ft. and weemploy 23 people; two of them being ourdaughters and several of them being ourgrandchildren who have helped us everystep of the way. Our family has grown, aswe consider everyone of our employeespart of the family.I credit our top-notchstaff with a large part of our stores successand we consider our crew the best youregoing to find anywhere.

Our store has a plethora of wonderful giftitems, from collectable porcelains, hand cutcrystal, art glass, locally made myrtle woodpieces, childrens books, toys, and educa-tional games. We would like to think that we

have something for just about everyone. Some say we are bursting at the seams, andI guess you could say we are. We are burst-ing at the seams with pride, joy and grate-fulness for the success of our store and theblessings that God has poured out over ourfamily.

Customers who came into the store aschildren now return with their own childrenand grandchildren, and the business hasbecome a Roseburg tradition, named to theNews Reviews ReadersChoice list as theNo. 1 Gift & Drug Store for the last 7 years ina row.In addition to everything else we pro-vide is trust, whether it be in the quality andaccuracy of prescription services or backingup the merchandise that we have on theshelves with the strength of our own reputa-tion. Trust takes a long time to build. Peo-ple have to trust you, they have to know thequality of something is what you say it isand that you will stand behind it. Its about

connecting with the customers and knowingthat when they leave this store, they leavehappy and with confidence that what theyhave purchased is exactly what they wantedand expected it to be.

As a pharmacist, I like the idea of helpingpeople with their problems. Im concernedabout peoples problems and their health, both emotionally and physically.I alwayshave been, and Im glad to be an independ-ent pharmacist.

My wife and I would like to thank thecommunity for their support over thesepast 49 years. We hope to serve our com-munity and serve it well for many years tocome. Phil said.

Spring 1973 (March) was an excellenttime to start a landscaping business, but when youre only 25 years old,any-thing you do seems excellent! A crew ofone,a 1956 Chevy pick-up truck, amower, a rototiller and various handtools and youre good to go!

Now how to get that first project isthe big question. Easy! Just go to all thereal estate companies and general con-

tractors to introduce yourself and work just pours out into your lap, NOT!Actually, the first project was an

eight-plex in Winston owned by a friend. After much intense brainwork, an esti-mate of $800.00 appeared on thepaper and the owner quickly said,Goahead Mike. Seven hot days later,(temps averaged 103 that week) aquestion nagged, how come for 86hours of really hard work, was there nomoney to take home? Werent busi-nessmen supposed to make a lot ofmoney? Maybe a mistake on this cho-

sen profession needed to be examined. For the year of 1973, a grand total of$4,300.00 for about 10,000 hours wasrealized. Thank God for working wivesor there never would be enough to eat!

Fast forward the tape to March,2008. Wintergreen Nursery, Landscap-ing, and Florist is just starting its 36thyear in Douglas County. Through 3recessions and many economic down-turns,Wintergreen has grown (no punintended). With 10 employees, eightacres of plants,a florist & gift shop, andway too many tools,Wintergreen hassurvived in rural Southern Oregon.Theres even a gardening radio showevery Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:00 pmon 1240 KQEN. Maybe there wasnt amistake made after all! For the seventhyear in a row,Wintergreen Nursery &

Landscaping was picked as DouglasCounty Favorite Landscaping Company! Why? Good Question and several possi-ble answers.

Business & personal philosophy isidentical; most importantly, treat every-one as you would like to be treated. AsWinston Churchill once said, Never, never, never quit. If times are hard or iftimes are good, never deviate fromdoing the absolute best that you can. While Wintergreen is not the leastexpensive landscaping nursery compa-ny,a maximum effort by all employees

is made on a daily basis to more thansatisfy our customers and clients. Themotto Quality is our most importantproductis what our staff believes in!

Wintergreen wants our clients to besuccessful with their yards & gardens.Whether they are purchasing one shrubor tree or a full landscape project, ourstaff is full of advice on planting,fertiliz-ing,watering, or pruning. The bottom

line is life & growth; so that your gardenis enjoyable and healthy. A satisfiedcustomer is the best advertisement tohave. In 36 years of business, less than1% of any plant material sold or plantedhas ended up on the burn pile or land-fill. A very large percentage of trees and

shrubs are grown right at the nursery,so customer satisfaction is assured andplant quality is guaranteed.

Remember three things for plant sur-vival.

    1. Plants will die more quickly fromover watering than from under water-ing. Major cause of death.

    2. Over fertilizing.3. Poor soil & drainage.

Recently we hear of companies goinggreen, whatever that is. Wintergreenhas been green for 36 years even beforeit became popular. And remember Quality is our most important prod-uct.

Gerretsens Building Supply, cele-brating 85 years of service!

This third generation business isproud of a history that reaches back to1923. Located at 1900 NE Airport Roadin Roseburg,Gerretsen Building SupplyCo. is in the hands of Donda GerretsenKing, Eric Gerresten and Doug Carl.Combined, they have 97 years of knowl-edge from working in this family busi-ness.

The Gerretsen Building Supply familyand staff have always known their com-pany is a family affair with personalservice a key to continued success inthe future. Everyone is sure to getfriendly and knowledgeable assistancefrom a familiar face since more thanfifty percent of the full time staff haveworked at Gerretsen Building Supply formore than ten years.

Customer relationships are one ofour strengths and we work really hard tobuild those relationships though part-nerships with our contract base, DondaGerretsen King said. Business relation-ships,much like family ties, require careand attention through the years andexcellent relationships have long beenthe strength of this company.

The addition of big box store to Rose-burg has given more retail choices tothe area, but even these bigger stores

know there is a difference betweenretail building supplies and a project ori-ented contractor yard. This shift hasallowed us to increase our business inareas they dont service well; DIYremodel projects and contractor servic-es, Donda Gerretsen King said. Theseare areas we really enjoy!

At Gerrestsen Building Supply, con-tractors can find competitive pricing, selection and job-site delivery. Theyhave a service team that offers job sitemeasurement for mill-work needs, esti-mating services and constant contactwith contractors through outside salesrepresentatives.

Things have certainly changed at Ger-retsens since the early days, but thecombination of service and ready inven-tory makes this building supply store anessential first stop for anyone startingremodeling or new construction. Evenin a time of increases competition, Ger-retsens is preparing for the future byholding to the standards of excellencethat Douglas County builders know theycan always expect from their favoritebuilding supply store.

A familys hobby greenhouse is now agardeners delight.

They started with a greenhouse justfor the family but grew a seedling-sizedhobby into a nursery business with areputation for quality.

John and Peggy Mignola, togetherwith their son and daughter-in-law Mikeand Mariah, are pleased to offer a gen-erous variety of plants as well as gardenand yard products at Mignola Farms. The business located at 2690 RobertsCreek Road, south of Green, is also theplace to purchase bulk landscape andnursery products such as bark mulchand soil amendments.

After her husband John bought asmall greenhouse more than 16 yearsago,Peggy Mignola took over the fun ofgrowing plants and learning aboutthem. That fun soon turned intorewarding hard work. Peggys plantgrowing activity soon outgrew the smallgreenhouse that helped get a strongfamily business started.

I just wanted to grow plants, thatwas the main thing, she said. But wedecided as a family this needed to be

more than a hobby.Weve been keepingbusy. You just change your hat to fitwhatever youre doing here.

With years of experience, MignolaFarms has grown to include two 100foot greenhouses. The Mignolas pur-chased a specially designed blowertruck for easy delivery and applicationof mulches. Two dump trucks are avail-able to lead and deliver garden materi-als. A selection of fertilizers and pest-control products are available in theirsales room.

Each member of the family has a spe-cialty that helps Mignola Farms contin-ue to serve customers. John keeps theequipment running, Peggy handles pur-chasing and sales, Mike makes deliver-ies and operates the blower truck thathas added a whole new dimension totheir family owned business, and Mariah jumps in wherever she is needed fromtruck driving to pulling weeds. They areproud of their family owned businessand their work to provide the best serv-ice and the only blower truck in thearea.

With the bark blower our businesshas taken off in Roseburg. We get a lotof feedback. We try to make peoplehappy, Peggy said. I think our selec-

tion of plants is growing each year andour customer base is getting biggerevery year.

    Loras In-Home Care

Loving and compassionate care foryour loved one.

Lois Deatherage started Loras In-Home Care in March,1997. There was asignificant family event that occurred in1959 which prompted Lois to begin thebusiness. When I was a teenager,my

mother was diagnosed with terminalcancer, she says.I could not take careof her because I had to work to supportboth of us. I had to make the decisionto place my mother in a nursing homebecause she could not be left alone andthere was no one who was willing tostay with her while I was at work. I havealways wanted to be a nurse and I want-ed to provide some type of service thatwould allow people to remain at home ifthey wanted to. Finally, in 1997 I startedan In-Home Care business and I namedit after my mother as a tribute to her.

Lois has a Bachelors and MastersDegree in Business Management and isa nurse with 30 years of experience inhealth care.

We go into clients home. Some areunder Hospice care, some have beenreleased from the hospital and needtemporary care, some are unable to givethemselves personal care or preparemeals, and so we assist them.We workwell with Home Health and Hospice

agencies and have a good relationshipwith the local hospitals and doctorsoffices. We also do respite care, whichallows family members a break.Thebusiness now has 55 employees and isstate licensed and belongs to the BetterBusiness Bureau. Employees are drugand criminal checked and go through athorough orientation period before they

are sent to a clients home. Lois givesthe employees at both businesses a lotof credit for what the couple has beenable to accomplish. We have wonderfulemployees [that] we have [had] for a lotof years, she says. Its a good staff, andpeople stay where they feel valued andappreciated. The community is alsoimportant to the couple, and in the past, they have sponsored potlucks in thedowntown area to help build the com-munity and forge friendships. As theymove into semi-retirement-sort of-theywant to travel across the United Statesin their RV. Lois says they will still play arole in the day to day operations of bothbusinesses. They appreciate the workthey have been able to do and theresponse they have received. We bothlove what were doing, and well be hereuntil they kick us out, she says.

Loras In-Home is opening a newoffice in North Bend with Reva Abeene, currently the Roseburg administrator,as the office manager.

    Mobile Tune

Come to them, or theyll come to you!

Mobile Tune was started by KenDeatherage in 1973 and was the firstmobile auto repair business of its kind inOregon.

I noticed that many of the cars thatwere towed to us could be easily repairedright where they broke down, Kennethsays. So I started the business as anemergency repair service. We still do sev-

eral such calls per day.It all started in a step van and motored

its way along quite nicely. In 1996 hebought the old Roseburg Motors building, where he had worked as a sales manager.

The business now performs auto repaireither in-house, at your house or on theroad, with three emergency vans ready toassist stranded travelers.

The company has built a reputation intown as a reliable and honest enterprisethat takes care of customers. Many of theresponsibilities are being turned over toSteve Perry and Tyler Nelson as KenDeatherage moves out from under the

hood and to the front of the store, where heenjoys spending time with customers.

There has been an appliance store onthe corner of Harvard and W. Fairhavenfor over 56 years. For the first 25+ yearsit was called Berghs Maytag. This smallshowroom and shop took up just 1/4thof the first floor of the building.AfterTim bought the business he expandedto the first two sections and thatswhere it stayed until late 2003. By 2004the new owner Joe DeMeyer expandedthe sales floor by 50% to over 4000square feet. Parts, service and ware-house take up the rest of the first floor. The rapid expansion of the store isequaled by the rapid growth in sales.

Tims Appliance offers a Home Townshopping experience with pricingfinancing offerings that only NationalBuying Power can provide. In 2003 thestore became a member of BRAND-

SOURCE.BrandSource is the largestindependent buying group in the US.The buying power of over 2200 dealersis strong enough to compete with any ofthe national chains in the way of price, special financing, plus they receive fac-tory rebates and offers exclusive toBrandSource dealers.

Recently Joe attended a NationalBrandSource convention in Dallas. Atthe convention there are seminars tohelp improve everything from customerservice to store layout and design. There is also a product show that everymajor appliance manufacture attends

with huge booths containing all of thatcompanys latest and greatest prod-ucts.The convention hall for just theappliances is larger than our own Dou-glas Hall at the fairgrounds. During theshow there is also a BUYING FAIRwhere the manufactures offer even bet-ter deals than normal. After takingadvantage of those offers, the store hasbeen unloading hundreds of new appli-ances at super show prices.

Several things set Tims Applianceapart from it competition.First, thebiggest concern for Tims is that thecustomer truly likes the product thatthey purchase.A great price on thewrong product is not a good deal.AtTims they are willing to take the time, ask the right questions, and then helpthe customer make the correct choice

for their personal needs. To help in thatprocess,Tims has several productshooked up LIVE on the display floor. Forexample, there are several differentdishwashers hooked up live. Customerscan really listen to the differencebetween a 46 decibel and a 54 decibeldishwasher. When you can hear the dif-ference it is easier to make an informeddecision.

When you put together customerservice before and after the sale alongwith big city prices you get the very bestdeal on appliances right here at TIMSSAppliance.

    Hi 5 Music

Still marching to thebeat of his own drum

Please come by andsee our new lines includ-ing JBL loudspeakers,Jackson guitars, andnew models of Fender,Ovation, and Pearl dur-ing our 6 year Anniver-sary.

We have grown andhave become a destina-tion point for our cus-tomers as far away asMedford,Eugene,Bendand the coastal townssuch as Coos Bay & Gold

Beach. In the past Imade some positivechanges for the better ofHi 5 music and for ourcustomers, the resultshave been remarkable tosay the least! We havereached out to bring more business toRoseburg and Douglas County to helpour local economy.

We plan to do a lot more in the future.

I have noticed a lot of our young peoplehanging out in the parking lots all overRoseburg because there are no teen

centersor a venue like the wow hall orMcDonald theatre in Eugene for them tospend there time at.We need toaddress this problem, our young peopledeserve a place to go hear and playtheir music. The music on the half shell,Douglas County fair and occasionally

the Jacoby Auditorium are wonderfulexamples of what can be done. Whyshouldnt we have a year round venuefor our community, and start bringing inlive national acts with local bands also?

The Great White concert on May 24this a positive example. It sure beats the

now expensive drive to Eugene orPortland to catch a big act; andwould also bring in more cultureand dollars to our community. Iwas at the Les Claypool show lastsummer at the McDonald Theatrein Eugene and met some youngpeople that drove 1200 miles tosee the show! We are not off the

beaten path as we are told bysome, I-5 goes through our townand big name acts are driving on itevery day.

Hi 5 Music began with imagi-nation and hard work 6 years agoand now doing very well with a90% costumer return rate.Westrive to be competitive to the larg-er markets. Hi 5 Music has thelowest prices in Southern Oregon

and a full selection of instrumentsfrom guitars, drums to keyboards, amplifiers and microphones.

Now that I am at the store 6days a week I dont have muchtime for my true passion which isperforming, I still do however fill inwork and special occasions in my

    spare time

Thank you all very much for all yoursupport!
