WELCOMEOn behalf of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, it is a pleasure to invite you to theinaugural All-Ireland Postgraduate Conference in Sport Sciences and Physical Education, to be held at theUniversity of Limerick on Friday 24th January 2014. The conference aims to give research students theopportunity to present their work to their peers and to interested academics, in a supportive and collaborativeenvironment. This inaugural conference offers an important opportunity for postgraduate research candidatesto:

● Enhance and develop their research skills by presenting research in a conference environment● Present research proposals, preliminary data or research-in-progress● Contribute to the ‘knowledge exchange' of the postgraduate community in Ireland as well as contributing to

the establishment of a national postgraduate forum● Network and engage in academic discourse in a supportive, interdisciplinary environment● Receive constructive feedback on their poster/oral presentation with prizes for best poster presentation and

best oral presentation

ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONSubmission of an abstract is free of charge. Authors need to state their preference for oral or poster presenta-tion as well as thematic area.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 29th November 2013. After reviewing, authors will be informedabout the acceptance of their submission by 9th December 2013.

Sample Abstract Abstract must be submitted in the format and guidelines requested.

The potential of physical activity and sport tocontribute to the greater good goes well beyondthe realms of our own discipline. It is throughquality research that we can truly realise itspotential. This presentation will explore andchallenge our role and responsibility in translatingresearch into useable outputs to influence policymakers and practitioners in diverse fields such astransport, engineering, employment, or socialpolicy.•It will also reflect on a postgraduate journeythrough research and into practice and policy, andraise issues for participants to ponder.

Keynote: “Careful preparation is thekey to quality postgraduateresearch”

Research is a daunting process.Nevertheless with carefulpreparation, the acquisition anddiscovery of new knowledge can bean empowering experience for both the student andteacher alike. This lecture will take the postgraduatestudent through some of the essentialmethodological steps (and pitfalls) in producingquality and publishable (quantitative) research.

WORKSHOPS

Workshop 2 Using Your Mind’s Eye: Imagery in Sport,Exercise and Rehabilitation Context

How can we use our minds to improve our sporting performance or to evenenhance the recovery process from injury? This workshop focuses on answering this questionand others. It is designed for those interested in physical activity research,performanceenhancement in sport settings and injury recovery and rehabilitation. A British Association ofSport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) expert statement developed by the presenters withinternational collaborators forms the basis of the evidence based guidelines presented in thisinteractive workshop for researchers, coaches and practitioners. The workshop will be highlyinteractive, include break-out groups and the use of video-based case-studies forconsideration by the attendees.

Workshop 1 Getting Your Research Published

Professor Nevill will use his 13 years experience as Editor in Chief of the Journal ofSports Sciences to outline the essential tips researchers can use to help getting their researchpublished and identify some of the common pitfalls authors fall into that lead to their articlesbeing rejected.
