Oremus pro invicem “Let us pray for each other”
Father Edward C. Hathaway, Rector
NEW APOSTOLATE SEEKS REPARATION FOR RACISM A new Saint Mary parish Apostolate, the Saint Katharine
Drexel Society, has been founded in response to recent
events of racial injustice. The society prays for the healing of
our nation, especially for the historical and continuing
wounds inflicted by slavery, and in reparation for the sins of
racism, past and present. The group prays the rosary during
the Basilica’s Holy Hour on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30
p.m. and meets at other times for prayer and fellowship.
Father David is the group’s chaplain.
Catholic teaching encourages reparation for our own sins and, through the virtue of the
Communion of the Saints and the oneness of the mystical Body of Christ, for the sins
of others. Through our prayers, we ask God to repair the spiritual damage done in the
past and to heal our community, state, country and the world.
The patroness of the society, Saint Katharine Drexel (1858-1955), was the second
American-born saint canonized by the Church. Born in Philadelphia to a wealthy fami-
ly, she gave up her affluent lifestyle to enter religious life, using her inheritance to
minister to the poor and oppressed. She founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament,
which established more than 100 schools serving Native American reservations and
Southern African American inner-city and rural communities. The Sisters never wa-
vered in their mission, even when threatened and their buildings vandalized.
When he canonized Katharine Drexel in 2000, Saint John Paul II said, “She taught a
spirituality based on prayerful union with the Eucharistic Lord and zealous service of
the poor and the victims of racial discrimination. Her apostolate helped to bring about
a growing awareness of the need to combat all forms of racism through education and
social services. Katharine Drexel is an excellent example of that practical charity and
generous solidarity with the less fortunate, which has long been the distinguishing
mark of American Catholics.”
For more information about the Saint Katharine Drexel Society, please contact Monica
Favela at [email protected].

PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR THE SOLEMNITY
OF SAINTS PETER & PAUL The Papal document, Domus Ecclesiae, spells out specific privileges granted to Saint
Mary and other Minor Basilicas throughout the world. The most important of these is
the Plenary Indulgence, which you may receive, under the usual conditions, when you
devoutly visit the Basilica on certain days and participate in any sacred rite “or at least
recite the Lord’s Prayer and the profession of faith.”
One of those days is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Monday, June 29. If you
can, please join us for Mass at 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m. or 12:10 p.m. to honor Saints Peter
and Paul. If you meet all the “usual conditions,” you gain a Plenary Indulgence, the
“remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1471) Learn more at https://

POPE FRANCIS ADDS THREE NEW TITLES
TO MARIAN LITANY The ancient Litany of Loreto, featuring a list of devo-tional titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will now have three new invocations, as Pope Francis has decided to include “Mother of Mercy,” “Mother of Hope” and “Comfort of Migrants.” While some spiritual writers believe the litany can be traced to Saint Gregory the Great (540-604 A.D.) or even to the Apostles, most historians believe it was composed in the late 15th to early 16th century. It is thought the litany was initially adopted at the miracu-lous shrine in Loreto, Italy, where tradition says the original house of the Virgin Mary was transported. From there, the litany spread around the world. The new titles were announced in a June 20 letter from Cardinal Robert Sarah, Prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, to the bishops’ conferences around the world. The letter includes the placement in the litany for the three new titles: Mater misericor-diae (Mother of Mercy) should be placed after Mater Ecclesiae (Mother of the Church), Mater spei (Mother of Hope) should follow Mater divinae gratiae (Mother of Divine Grace) and Solacium mi-grantium (Comfort of Migrants) should follow Refugium peccatorum (Refuge of Sinners).

BASILICA TEENS RE-BOOT WORKCAMP FOR 2020 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Diocese of Arlington was unable to conduct its traditional diocesan-wide WorkCamp this summer. The annual program gives teenagers an opportunity to perform large-scale service projects and take part in gatherings for prayer and fellowship. This year, the diocese decided to “re-boot” WorkCamp and encouraged individual parishes to organize projects for the campers. The Basilica of Saint Mary hosted 17 teens the week of June 22 for our WorkCamp Re-Boot. With eight adult volunteer supervisors, the WorkCampers repaired the deteriorating alley wall near the parish’s Pitt Street park-ing lot, repainted and repaired the rectory carport, painted classrooms at the Basilica School of Saint Mary and
removed weeds throughout parish properties. They also attended Mass in the Basilica each day, prayed, enjoyed meals together, played games and attended virtual evening programs with Work-Campers from other parishes. One evening pro-gram featured Bishop Michael Burbidge leading Eucharistic adoration and giving a reflection. During the week, 38 parishes from throughout the diocese hosted about 700 WorkCampers.
SAINT MARY’S EARLY BLACK PARISHIONERS, SLAVE AND FREE There were many black individuals living in colonial Alexandria, both slave and free. By the 1800 census, Alexandria
was home to 1,172 slaves (19.7% of the city's population) and 383 free people of color (.064%). The number of slaves
grew, reaching its peak in 1820 (1,857 or 19.1%), then tapered off somewhat. By 1860, the number of slaves had
dropped to 1,386 (11%). The number of free blacks also grew, reaching its peak in 1830 (1,548 persons counted), but
was dropping by 1860 (1,415), when there were more free blacks than slaves.
Many of Alexandria’s enslaved and free blacks were Catholic, owned by wealthy white Catholics who brought them
from Maryland. These individuals often had no last names or took the last name of their owner. Typical baptismal list-
ings in pre-Civil War parish records include:
February 28, 1801 – ULIA ANN, daughter of CHARITY and ORANDA, slaves to W.H. Foote.
September 3, 1809 – MOORE, LUISA, colored. Simply baptized slave of Capt. Moore. Sponsor Mrs. Moore.
Aged about 18 months.
July 9, 1831 – CATHERINE, daughter of SIMON and HENNY, his wife. Aged nine months, and a slave of
Richard Mason of Fairfax County, VA.
July 9, 1831 – BUTTS, MARY and HELEN, twins, daughters of MARY BUTTS, free and colored.
Aged nine months.
July 1832 – MAGDALENE, daughter of ELIZA, a colored person free. Aged seven months.
February 8, 1846 – ELIZABETH JOHNSON, a woman of color and near 100 years old. Baptized conditionally.
Since the majority of early Saint Mary parishioners were shopkeepers and small merchants,
tradesmen and laborers – professions that had no need for slaves – they generally either did
not own slaves, or owned one or two at most.
Other parishioners owned larger numbers of slaves. For example, Slave Manumissions in
Alexandria Land Records, 1790-1863 in Friends of Freedmen's Cemetery, 2007, lists Saint
Mary parishioner William Hayward Foote as having freed 44 of his slaves in his will, pro-
bated in 1852. He did not free them outright, however, when he died. Concerned they would
have no means of support, Foote and his widow, Cecelia, freed them gradually over several
years, and urged them to "…look to my dear wife as their protector.” A newspaper clipping
from the Alexandria Gazette, inserted in the parish records by Father Joseph Bixio, reveals
the high esteem Foote held for one of his elderly slaves, Bob Foy. Foote’s tribute included
the following: “If an honest man be the noblest work of God, then was Bob Foy one of na-
ture's nobility.” Some of Foote's freed slaves bore the name "Quander," a name associated
with the Washington family and Mount Vernon. Saint Mary Church records show marriages
and baptisms of several Quanders, free persons. A number of Quanders settled in Fairfax
County, just south of Hunting Creek. Quander Road bears their name today.
