Pastor’s Chronicle Today’s gospel [Mk 10: 2-16] gives us his teaching on marriage and divorce, and also a lesson on wel-coming children. Jesus tells us that the practice of divorce resulted from human stubbornness or hard-ness of heart, not from God’s original plan. He teach-es that men and women are equal partners. Men and women share one human flesh, one human nature and are equal in God’s eyes. On the basis of that equality, Jesus condemned the double standard that prevailed in his society: a strict prohibition of divorce for wom-en, a rather indulgent law of divorce for men. Jesus says, if men and women are equal partners, equally loved by God, there could only be one standard for both. That standard is faithful love unto death. To be sure, there are human situations in which a marriage is no longer sustainable, where there are instances of abuse (physical or emotional), situations in which divorce becomes necessary. In these situations, the Church responds with a supportive love and not con-demnation. A rupture in human relationships is al-ways tragic and must never be treated casually. Jesus’ act of welcoming little children and blessing them reinforces the same teaching of equali-ty. We feel such affection and compassion for chil-dren that we presume that it was always has been this way. Actually this is a rather modern phenomenon. In the time of Jesus children were not given much protection or care. At the time the same legal system that assigned women a lower place than men also considered children to be inferior. Girls were consid-ered inferior because of their sex; boys under the age of twelve were considered non-persons. Jesus’s pub-lic act of welcoming children and blessing them was a major challenge to the religious beliefs and social conventions of his day. Today children continue to be abused, abandoned, and most reprehensibly kid-napped by those involved in “Human Trafficking”. Today is “Respect Life Sunday,” both parts of today’s gospel show us Jesus’ respect for human life at every stage of development from conception to natural death. Why should human beings try to wipe out the awesome beauty, and variety, and mystery of human life by abortion or euthanasia? Rather, shouldn’t all God’s children come to be born, grow to their full potential, and die as God wills?

The Pope’s Visit to the USA and a Parish Forum

Follow the pope’s visit to the “New” World – Cu-ba and the USA this week. The parish will debrief this visit and its significance here at an Open Fo-rum on Oct. 7 from 7 to 8:30 PM in the Parish Hall. Much of his visit will center on the Family Conference being held in Philadelphia at the same time. News coverage will be extensive. There is also the ETWN, a Catholic TV channel with cov-erage. The family is the bedrock of “church”. An open forum means “you” bring what you have heard and your reflections to share with oth-ers. “Our panel to help us facilitate the Forum will be Fr. Bill, pastor, Michael Newhouse, parishioner, and Sister Roselle Hass, a Cenacle Sister. Join in sharing and receiving on this evening.

Adoration You are invited to commit to a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament on Wednes-

days from 8:30am to 7:00pm. So many graces flow to those who spend time before Christ in Eucharistic Adoration. In silence, we can hear more readily that still, quiet voice of God. Adoration is a beautiful gift and I hope many of you will take advantage of it. Prayerfully consider committing to one hour per week. We strive to have two committed Adorers for each hour. Many hours now have only one person and currently no one is

scheduled to be present from 5-6pm. If you are interested, please contact Charla Macicek, [email protected], 713-861-2702.
