Parish News

Recently we gathered for the Year 12 Final Mass at Samaritan College. Let us thank God for this wonderful occasion. On this significant milestone for our Year 12 students we not only celebrated their achievements but also acknowledged the contributions that these students made to our school. Their presence and leadership at the College over the time that they have been part of this community have been a blessing for us all and have also helped form the school’s character. We hope that they may continue to accept the call of Jesus to become the light of the world and witnesses of His goodness to those who are in need. We pray and entrust the success of the future of our students to the love of God and to the motherly care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Now, we are in the month of November when Christian people remember and pray for those who have died. During the week, many children and young people had great fun dressing up for Halloween. Probably through the years, young people have enjoyed pretending to be ghosts and seeing if they can frighten their friends - certainly I remember doing so. I regret, however, that the feast of All Saints and All Souls have been so commercialised to facilitate profit for some of the larger firms and provide an extra expense for parents so close to Christmas.

Actually, November 1 and 2 are holy days. On the feast of All Saints we honour all our relatives and friends who have died and gone to heaven. This includes grandparents, sometimes unfortunately even a parent or a brother or sister, whom we miss very much. But the feast day gives us a chance to honour them and gives

some consolation from the knowledge that they are now happy and at peace with Jesus in heaven. In heaven they still remember us. It is also a chance in our prayer to say thank you to these good people who have enriched our lives. On the feast of All Souls we pray for those who have died and maybe are still experiencing the mystery of purification to make them ready for heaven. Then throughout November, masses and prayers continue to be offered by loving relatives and friends for all who have died.

On Tuesday, November 14 at Our Lady’s Church at 7pm, there is a Memorial Mass especially for those parishioners and friends who have died during the past 12 months and the recently deceased. Everyone is invited. Then this Sunday, November 5 at 4pm, the Parish conducts the blessing of graves at Whyalla Cemetery. Again, all are invited.

News about our Youth Group: at the end of next week, on Friday evening, November 10, we will have another meeting of our Youth Group. Come and join us for some food, fun, and discussion of our future plans. It should be a great evening!

Prayers and best wishes for the rest of the term.

who have been going the extra mile with the Year 12s by having before and after school lessons, holiday classes and by making themselves even more available to help with any questions from the students. The time they have given to be at events like the early morning breakfast on Friday is very much appreciated.

Trees at St Teresa’sFor those who have been looking at the designs on the office window at St Teresa’s or on our website, you would have noticed there is some work to be done to the front of the campus, including the fence. Even though alternatives were looked at, the Board has agreed that the trees at the front of the campus will need to be removed. The wall cannot be repaired if they remain, new sewerage pipes for new toilets cannot be installed if they remain and we have advice that the trees themselves will become more of a safety hazard with that species of tree known for dropping branches. Over time, new landscaping will grow in that area and those

new plants/bushes will become the norm. In the spirit of sustainability, we plan to re-use the old trees/stumps in some form in our gardens and play areas in the future.

DiariesFeedback from staff/parent/student surveys in recent years has indicated that the student diary is not utilised as much as it used to be. This is in part due to the fact that our secondary students now have Office 365 (provided free of charge) and therefore can utilise (across the web/cloud) the Microsoft Office Calendar function and this can be linked to any device they choose. In moving forward with technology, the paper version of the diary will now be optional for the secondary students. Students will still be able to ask for one (no charge) but students, especially senior students, will now be encouraged to use their online calendar to set alerts, store assignments, plan the term etc. Please note it is optional to not use a paper diary in 2018, not mandatory and this only applies to secondary students.

Year 9s with the National Evangelisation Team (NET)

Farewell Year 12s

Religious Dimension

It certainly has been an eventful start to the term. Last week the National Evangelisation Team spent two days with our Year 9 and Year 10 students. The Team were engaging and youth focussed, enabling our students to interact openly and honestly as a group. The Year 9 students explored the theme of Self Image and were encouraged to see themselves through the eyes of God. The Year 10 students focussed on Leadership and explored the way we can all be leaders in our own communities and lives.

The Year 12 students were farewelled by the Saint John’s Campus community as last Friday was their final school day before beginning their final preparations. The college and all the Year 12 teachers wish the Year 12 students all the best in their upcoming assessments and final results. I would also like to thank Fr Ramel for leading us in prayer at the Mass on Thursday morning.

Yesterday the Church celebrated All Saint’s Day, and today we celebrate All Souls Day. On All Saint’s Day the Catholic Church prays for all the Saints in heaven. We pray to the Saints to ask God to intercede on our behalf. You may have a favourite Saint you wish to pray for.

On All Souls Day we remember all those who have died. It could be a time when your family prays for someone you know who has passed away.

College News

- To the Communities of Eyre Peninsula and Whyalla -The Western Region Pastoral Councils brings together a broad cross-section of leaders from the Catholic Parishes and Schools of Eyre Peninsula and Whyalla.

At our recent meeting in Cleve (September 20) we heard of the story of a farming family from the Lock region who had only planted a third of their usual cropping land this season. At the mid-point of the growing season their crop was patchy and struggling.

Another family near Cleve did not sow any crop this

year. Now in their seventies this was a first for this family.

This story could be repeated in many parts of the Peninsula as families battle the effects of their toughest start to a season in a decade.

In many parts there were no decent rains for the first six months of 2017.

Might we encourage all in our region to be especially conscious of the needs and challenges of those who are doing it tough at present and to reach out to them.

A Prayer for Fruitful SeasonsCreator God,

the sun and the rain givelight and water to the land

manifesting Your power and goodness.

The plants, animals and peopledraw nourishment from the earth, bringing forth and sustaining life.

God, in Your goodness, send timely and bountiful rains

to water thirsty crops, that all who provide our daily bread

can reap a fruitful harvest.Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

As educators we strive to instill in students a love of learning and the skills and disposition to support life-long learning. Central to this is our own commitment to professional learning as we look to review, evaluate and further improve our practice.

This week and next, primary teaching staff will have the opportunity to showcase their professional learning with each other, within the Whyalla community and Catholic Education South Australia (CESA).

On Monday due to our involvement in the CESA Numeracy program, some staff were filmed teaching Mathematics lessons. This footage will be used for professional development purposes for other teachers in Catholic schools across the state. If you watched the local news on Monday night you may have seen our teachers in action!

Similarly, as we reach the half way point of the Trauma Sensitive Schools Project, the project team will participate in a sharing day with various other Catholic schools tomorrow. The opportunity to share the initiatives we have implemented to support the learning of all students and the chance to hear what other schools are trialling, will affirm our practice and provide a catalyst for further learning.

Finally, next week all teaching staff will have the opportunity to share their personal professional learning. This interest based professional learning runs concurrently with our school based professional learning and enables teachers to investigate areas of professional interest.

As always, we acknowledge the ongoing commitment and professionalism of our teachers as they consistently embrace these learning opportunities.

Band Showcase - Advance NoticeAll students in Years 4 to 6 will be attending the Samaritan College Band Showcase on Friday, November 24 at Saint John’s Campus. This is a wonderful opportunity for the primary and secondary bands to showcase what they have learnt up to this point and also to have their peers participate and listen to an instrumental performance. Students will be bussed from the primary campuses and dismissed from Saint John’s Campus at 3:00pm on this day.

Children's MassThere will be a Children’s Mass at St Teresa’s church on Saturday, November 11 at 6pm. A preparation workshop will be held at St Teresa’s church on Saturday, November 11 at 5:00pm.

All students and families are welcome to attend. Families of students celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation, please consider attending this Mass with your children.

Remembrance Day LiturgiesNext week marks Remembrance Day. This is the time to remember those men and women who served our country and dedicated their lives to ensure our security and peace.

Remembrance Day will be commemorated this term on Friday, November 10 (Week 4). Year 5/6 Arcobelli and Year 4/5 Baverstock will be celebrating a Liturgy at 10:30am at both primary campuses. Please feel free to join us as we honour the men and women who have served in the military and remember those who have died for the cause of freedom. The OLHCC service will be in the church and the service at STC will be on the asphalt area.

St Vincent De Paul Christmas AppealEvery year our generous Samaritan community donate to the Vinnies Christmas appeal. The volunteers at St Vincent De Paul always gratefully accept the donations of food, toys for children and gifts. Christmas for many families are made better and brighter by our donations.

This year we are again accepting food, toys and gifts as donations but as something a bit different, we are also accepting donations of new summer clothes for children and donations of good condition second hand summer clothes.

Please send donations to the office at each primary campus until the end of Week 7.

Learning ExpoDuring Terms 2 and 3 students in Year 2/3 have been working on project based learning during Investigations.

They have developed research skills including identifying an area of interest, posing questions and collecting information and data. They found information in books, on the internet and by interviewing other people.

Other skills they have learnt are working independently, planning and organising their work and working collaboratively with others. Students presented their projects at a Learning Expo attended by parents, carers and other students.

My area of interest was the water cycle. I learnt a lot about the water cycle and rain. Next time I would work on fireworks and explosives. I really enjoyed working with Jasmine before she left.

Demi

My area of interest was space. I learnt about the Solar System, what happens in space and

some fun facts about the planets. Next time I would work on the celebrations from Rio de Janeiro. I would improve by checking if I have the correct spelling and that would probably be all. I really enjoyed making the planets and learning the correct order.

Maddison

My area of interest was fidget spinners. I learnt that the bearing is the one that makes it spin and there are heaps of bearings on scooters, bikes or motor bikes. Next time I will do Tech Decks or cycling. I really enjoyed making it and making a poster.

Jett

My area of interest was Gorillas with Maddison. I learnt that a Silverback is so powerful it can tear you into pieces and they are ground-dwelling, predominantly herbivorous (plant-eating) apes that inhabit the forests of Central Africa. Next I would work on the human body because we are learning about it in MITIOG. I really enjoyed making the poster and model because we took a long time to make it and got paint everywhere.

Phoebe

We love the garden because there are lots of things to do.

We can't wait for the plants to grow so we can eat what we grow.

We love the noughts and crosses - it's just fun playing together.

CongratulationsA number of our students were involved recently in the South Australia Regional Hockey Championships, held in the Barossa Valley. The regional team that our students play in is a mix of players from the Port Lincoln and Whyalla Clubs. The U15 and U18 Boys teams won all their minor round games and progressed through to the final.

The finals were hotly contested games, but the U15 boys were able to hold off their opponents to come away victorious with a 3 -1 win. In the U18 game the boys fought hard and defended well. The final score 0 – 0 saw them enter extra time with the golden goal in play. Once more the teams took to the field and challenged hard, but unfortunately our regional team came off second best in the end.

Congratulations to the boys who represented the Region, in U15 – Matthew Bern; Dale Grinter; Matthew Holmes and Brayden Sampson; in U18 – Chris Margaritis.

I would also like to acknowledge Cadell Herbert who has been selected as part of the U18 Men’s State Squad

in Hockey. Cadell will no doubt have countless hours of training ahead to secure himself a position in the team. Good luck!

Farewell Year 12s Last Thursday the college held a Mass to farewell our Year 12 students. It is fitting that the entire secondary campus was there as many of our younger students will probably not see the Year 12s again. The Year 12s were given gifts from children from the primary campuses, and the entire congregation said prayers wishing these young adults all the very best as they move from school to the next stage of their lives.

ExaminationsWith Year 12 exams starting next week, held at UniSA, it is time to remind our Year 11 and 10 students that their examinations are not very far away. I would encourage students to start discussions with their teachers around the topics that are going to be covered in the exam. Armed with that knowledge a revision schedule can start to be formulated so as to achieve the best they can.

STEMIEOn the first day of Term 4, representatives of the Samaritan College STEMIE team travelled to UniSA to take part in the Regional Showcase of student work. STEMIE (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Innovation Experience) is a state-wide competition that affords students the opportunity to take part in a series of challenges, solving problems using their knowledge of STEM. Samaritan College students worked diligently during Term 3 to produce solutions to the problems associated with developing a hypothetical town in country SA, including transport, town planning and environmental considerations. Students represented the college with pride, showed great team work, as well as a healthy and respectful sense of competition. Samaritan College thanks UniSA for their support with this initiative.

VET Options for 2018This year we linked with Edward John Eyre High School to expand the number of TAFESA VET options that the two schools could offer, in 2018 we will continue this partnership enabling more students access to TAFESA courses whilst still at school. Most students have completed their subject selections for 2018, any who nominated a VET option should make an appointment to talk with Ms Gibson and find out what else needs to be done. Students who might have had a change of mind, and are re-considering a VET option should also make an appointment.
