ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER—FEBRUARY, 2016 __________________________________________ Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Since I did not get an opportunity to get something into the newsletter in January, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for remembering me with cards, gifts, and the congregational gift this past Christmas. You are a special group of people that I so enjoy being in ministry with. However, the greatest gift that I have received from you is the gift of your love and friendship. I am truly a blessed and richer man for having you all in my life. On January 6, we began the journey that we are currently in, during this time of Epiphany. Without doubt, the community saw us bring in Epiphany in style with the chili supper and bonfire. So a quick recap of Epiphany which means “manifestation”, the revealing of Christ to the Gentiles. This is a day set apart that brings our Christmas season to a close, we tell the story through the eyes of Matthew: Magi from the east, gifts of gold, a conniving King Herod, and a marvelous star. During this season we experience epiphanies; that is, God in Christ is revealed to us in the flesh and personhood of Jesus. Some of the stories we have heard during this time of Epiphany have included, Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in which he changes water into wine in Cana. The word and sacra- ments are for us the great epiphany of God’s grace and mercy. But we have moved so quickly through this time and it is a matter of a few days and we will already begin our journey through Lent. This month brings us to the Lenten season, the purple season, a season that people live and treat in so many different ways. Our Ash Wednesday gospel will say, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luther says, “Anything on which your heart relies and depends I say, that is really your God.” From our hymnal we sing these words, “Jesus, priceless treasure, source of purest pleas- ure, truest friend to me.” Where is your treasure? This question requires self-examination, a searching of your heart. Ash Wednesday moves this theme right into your pathway. As you move through Lent, the gospel read- ings will offer variations on the theme. You will reencounter revealing stories of Jesus as God’s treas- ured one and the world, especially the sinner, as loved beyond measure. Take a look at ELW Hymn #775 (your assignment as you begin your Lenten journey). The devil tempts Jesus to exploit his divinity: if you are the son of God, unleash your power (Lent 1). Jesus is the mother hen looking out for the wayward ones, attempting to gather those who are not willing (Lent 2). A lackluster fig tree is left alone, given one more year to bear fruit; it is too precious to cut down. (Lent 3). (More in March) Where are we in these stories? Are we willing to be gathered under Jesus’ wings this Lent? Like the fig tree given that extra time and like the wayward son welcomed home, we are given Lent to discover to whom and what we cling. May God be with you and bless you as you enter into your Lenten journey. Servants together, Pr. Paul <><

ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER—FEBRUARY, 2016

__________________________________________

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Since I did not get an opportunity to get something into the newsletter in January, I wanted to take a

moment to thank you for remembering me with cards, gifts, and the congregational gift this past

Christmas. You are a special group of people that I so enjoy being in ministry with. However, the

greatest gift that I have received from you is the gift of your love and friendship. I am truly a blessed

and richer man for having you all in my life.

On January 6, we began the journey that we are currently in, during this time of Epiphany. Without

doubt, the community saw us bring in Epiphany in style with the chili supper and bonfire. So a quick

recap of Epiphany which means “manifestation”, the revealing of Christ to the Gentiles. This is a day

set apart that brings our Christmas season to a close, we tell the story through the eyes of Matthew:

Magi from the east, gifts of gold, a conniving King Herod, and a marvelous star. During this season we

experience epiphanies; that is, God in Christ is revealed to us in the flesh and personhood of Jesus.

Some of the stories we have heard during this time of Epiphany have included, Jesus’ baptism in the

Jordan River, and his first miracle, in which he changes water into wine in Cana. The word and sacra-

ments are for us the great epiphany of God’s grace and mercy. But we have moved so quickly

through this time and it is a matter of a few days and we will already begin our journey through Lent.

This month brings us to the Lenten season, the purple season, a season that people live and treat in

so many different ways. Our Ash Wednesday gospel will say, “For where your treasure is, there your

heart will be also.” Luther says, “Anything on which your heart relies and depends I say, that is really

your God.” From our hymnal we sing these words, “Jesus, priceless treasure, source of purest pleas-

ure, truest friend to me.”

Where is your treasure? This question requires self-examination, a searching of your heart. Ash

Wednesday moves this theme right into your pathway. As you move through Lent, the gospel read-

ings will offer variations on the theme. You will reencounter revealing stories of Jesus as God’s treas-

ured one and the world, especially the sinner, as loved beyond measure.

Take a look at ELW Hymn #775 (your assignment as you begin your Lenten journey).

The devil tempts Jesus to exploit his divinity: if you are the son of God, unleash your power (Lent 1).

Jesus is the mother hen looking out for the wayward ones, attempting to gather those who are not

willing (Lent 2). A lackluster fig tree is left alone, given one more year to bear fruit; it is too precious to

cut down. (Lent 3). (More in March)

Where are we in these stories? Are we willing to be gathered under Jesus’ wings this Lent? Like the

fig tree given that extra time and like the wayward son welcomed home, we are given Lent to discover

to whom and what we cling.

May God be with you and bless you as you enter into your Lenten journey.

Servants together,

Pr. Paul <><

LENT- A Season for Fasting, a Season for Feasting

Fast from judging others; Feast on Christ living in them.

Fast from harsh words; Feast on words that build up others.

Fast from discontentment; Feast on gratitude.

Fast from anger; Feast on patience.

Fast from pessimism; Feast on optimism.

Fast from worry; Feast on God’s care.

Fast from complaining; Feast on appreciation.

Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness.

Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion for others.

Fast from discouragement; Feast on hope.

Fast from facts that depress; Feast on facts that uplift.

Fast from suspicion; Feast on truth.

Fast from thoughts that weaken; Feast on promises that inspire.

Fast from idle gossip; Feast on silence with a purpose.

Fast from guilt; Feast on the mercy of God.

Lent is such a time for fasting and feasting! (Author unknown

The following is shared with our newsletter friends and with permission from Danielle after

she read her poem aloud to the congregation:

IN GOD WE TRUST

By: Danielle Saxton

“Passions of Christ and misfortunes led I thank you JESUS for dying for our sins. Greatness comes and loneli-

ness goes with you by my side I’ll never let go. Free from sin forgiveness amends a daily prayer on my knees I give.

Cleanses my soul thanks to the Lord Hallelujah to all Amen as we know. Greatness is felt much more then I know

unexplained like an alien or UFO. Science is nothing it’s not in control. The Lord is my shepherd my rock and my

shield please give me strength and wisdom I pray to heal. It seems I’m stuck to breathe a lonely life but feel comfort

to know JESUS stays by my side. Amen as I feel your light in my heart, my soul opens up like children playing in the

park. Or a dove that flies with its mate in the sky only to be carried by the wind on a rise as GOD lets um soar

through the sunshine. Many things happen much more is to come so thank the heavenly father for sending us your

son. AMEN”

Looking For a Way to Deepen Your Worship Experience? For many people, looking at the Bible readings before Sunday helps put the message in the context of their lives. As you read the lessons, ask yourself: Is there anything in the readings that relate to your life right now? Is there anything that surprises you in the readings? Disturbs you? Try doing this and see if following this on a weekly basis strengthens your personal faith life, and deep-ens your worship experience.

The Lessons for Worship in February These are the Bible readings that we will hear during our worship services this month. They are provided that you might use them for personal devotion and meditation.

February 7th – Transfiguration of Our Lord February 14th – 1st Sunday in Lent

Worry is a total waste of time. It doesn’t change anything. All it does is steal your joy and keeps you busy doing nothing.

No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you believe you are, how you treat people tells all. Integrity is everything.

Four things you cannot recover: The stone after the throw; the word after it is said; the occasion after it is missed; time after it is gone.

Q: Why do cows have hooves? A: Because they lactose.

Q: What is the difference between ignorance and apathy? A: I don’t know and I don’t care.
