ALL SAINTS’

Dear Friends,I am very much looking forward to being with you the weekend of April 17-19, both for retreat and a visitation on Sunday morning. Our retreat time together will, I hope, be one of prayerful reflection about the values and identity of All Saints’, which will help us discern a forward direction. What we learn about the All Saints community will raise our awareness of the future toward which All Saints’ is being called, and especially, what sort of spiritual leader would best support, inspire and energize this holy time of transition.

I hope we will join together with open hearts and minds as together we seek God’s will and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.May the joy and grace of the resurrection be with you!+Mary

Decorated for only that one Sunday, the church was stunningly beautiful. The liturgies on Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday started us on our Holy Week journey with their own beauty. Easter is always our goal.

Dear Friends:Every day is Easter when we approach faith as an adventure. Indeed, an attitude of adventure helps us encounter the risen Lord, who is present through the Holy Spirit.People of adventure experience loss. My call to retire simultaneously represents a calling for All Saints’ to enjoy new leadership. Our parting will be bittersweet. As I told one member, I alternate between wishing I could stay another five years, and wanting to leave tomorrow. I’m excited about the future for both of us, and already sad that we’ll have to say goodbye. Our adventures of faith lead us into the unknown. I’m not sure how I will glorify Christ and lovingly serve others in retirement. As the saying goes, I won’t know until I get there. The adventure in faith for All Saints’ has already begun. I’m gratified to see additional people step forward to lend a hand in various ministries. Leadership positions are filling up, and additional

volunteers are helping in various ways—there’s room for more! There’s room for more. You have a strong and loving vestry. The associate clergy and staff are very present. Bishop Mary is pleased to lead you in a parish retreat on April 17 and 18. People of adventure experience joy. As we venture forth in faith, we experience the new life of Easter. We discover new qualities and strengths, as well as confirm the heritage in which we stand. You won’t know who the new All Saints’ is until you get there! We do know that the crucified and risen Lord is our never-failing friend, guide, mentor, inspiration, teacher, confessor, lover, and savior. With love and prayers, Rick+

Columbarium & Memorial Gardenby Jana GillImagine sitting in a beautiful columbarium garden outside of Grant Hall listening to doves coo, smelling the ocean air, and praying. Perhaps you are remembering your own loved ones who have died. Perhaps you are praying for the people named on the plaques. Maybe your mind is still as you rest in God’s presence. This is a proposed plan for a beautiful columbarium at All Saints’. It surrounds the existing original church cross at its current location. It includes ground niches for single or double ashes that line a cross-shaped pathway and seats. This place of prayer and peace includes garden areas for ashes interred in the earth, and space for memorial plaques. A second wall extends the existing wall given in memory of Walter M. Lehmann, Hans’ father. You’ll find this concept drawing at the back of the church. The project was begun through the generous donations of several members. The vestry has agreed to proceed with the design and research based on the enthusiasm of these donors, of which I am one. I think this memorial garden and columbarium is a gift we can give to our wonderful parish, as well as to our neighbors and many visitors. It provides a place for us to memorialize our own loved ones that we can visit often.

Stay tuned for more information and for opportunities to share ideas. In the meantime, if you have comments or would like to help, contact me, Jana Gill, or Jim Shillinglaw, chair of Buildings and Grounds.

Buildings & Grounds Report by Jim ShillinglawThe B&G Committee has been re-staffed with several eager volunteers since the beginning of 2015. We are now moving forward with an impressive list of projects begging for attention. These are our major and minor accomplishments so far this year: The Chalet renovation is now complete, and the parish now has a drawing of the proposed columbarium to be located in the upper patio, thanks to Jana Gill. A large mirror which was bugging the organist (it quivered when he played), has been removed, making Richard Wilson very happy! Raul purchased four new fire extinguishers to replace old ones whose time had come.We will be working on a variety of other projects and will report to you periodically our progress as action is completed.

Sr. Warden letter to the congregation:by Claudia Ward, Senior WardenThe Lord is risen! The Lord is risen, indeed! The Easter acclamation shakes us awake with its absurdity, but when we allow its truth to sink in we are reminded of the hope that it promises us.As All Saints’ celebrates the Fifty Days of Easter with its Adventure in Faith, we rejoice in our Christian life together in so many ways that give us hope for a wonderful future. Retreat with the Bishop: Friday evening and all day Saturday, 17-18 April. Who are we exactly? What makes All Saints’ tick? This is our opportunity to define ourselves and your opportunity to put in your two cents worth. The Bishop has agreed to guide us through this process. If you do not know her, here’s your chance. Knowing who we are is critical to our selecting the right person for the job, the right person for our congregation. So do come; everyone is needed. We will insure that even those who cannot be present those days will be able to contribute. Friday dinner will be potluck. Continental breakfast served Saturday, but bring a sack lunch. Drinks provided.

Confirmation: Sunday, 19 April. Several children from All Saints’ Day School will be confirmed by Bishop Mary at the 10:30 Eucharist. Come and make them feel welcome. They are members of our congregation. There will be a brunch for the confirmands, their families and the vestry after the service.Pilgrimage with the Presiding Bishop: Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will be in Monterey County on May first. She will be leading a pilgrimage at Mission San Antonio de Padua which is located on Fort Hunter Liggett near King City. It would be wonderful if we could have a contingent of folks from All Saints’ participating. More information when it is available, but mark your calendars.Good bye and Happy Retirement to Fr. Rick and Andrea. 6 June at All Saints’ Day School. This will be a joint celebration with the school. (This is a date change.) Time to be determined.Celebration of Ministry: On April 7th at the 10:30 Service we will have a celebration of the eight years of ministry that Fr. Rick has given to this parish.

The Status of the All Saints’ Organby Nancy JonesFriends – Our organist Richard Wilson and Clay Couri, the parishioner who has been maintaining our organ for the last four years, have informed the Vestry that our 25-year old digital organ is nearing the end of its life. To some of you, the current organ may sound fine, but it takes Clay’s volunteered twice monthly maintenance to keep the organ playable. The decay of aging electronics cannot be prevented forever. Almost every visit Clay needs to adjust the voicing of the increasingly unstable 55 registers; one or more of the stops fail or partially fail to maintain ideal voicing and require re-adjustment to maintain quality sound. There are signs that one of the power supply units is failing. If this happens, the entire organ will be disabled. At some point, the organ will reach a state where no mechanical intervention will save it. Richard and Clay describe our current organ as geriatric, requiring an ever increasing repair budget to replace failing components (it has been estimated that we would be spending many thousands of dollars if we had to pay for what Clay offers). They believe that a plan for the organ’s replacement as soon as possible is an urgent matter. As Richard reminds us, the musical heritage of the Episcopal Church is a rich, deep and varied tradition. All Saints’ is a parish that has warmly welcomed all of these musical forms for use in its worship. But to perform this musical liturgy requires not only the gifts of the musicians and parishioners involved, but also high-quality instruments that support this level of musical worship. In our church most of this support comes from the organ. In addition to its importance in our liturgy, our organ contributes to the value of our church in our outreach to the community.

In response to the reports provided by Richard and Clay, the Vestry has formed an Organ Research Task Force. We ask you to join us in an informal Vestry forum tentatively scheduled for May 10th after the 10:30 service. The task force wants to inform the congregation of the state of our current organ, discuss the role of music in our ministry, describe the process we plan to take in our research and ask for feedback. More information may be found in an article on the All Saints’ web-site. We urge you not to form an opinion until all of us have information in hand, which will take many months of research. Task force members are remaining open to all options. We need to make a wise and faithful decision. There are several ideas to consider and we seek the comments and suggestions of the entire church body, in that everyone will be affected by the next steps. If you have any questions or comments before that date, please contact any member of the Organ Research Task Force listed below:Susan Britton (chair), [email protected] Couri, [email protected] Jones, [email protected] Kirkwood, [email protected] Lawrence, [email protected] Wilson, [email protected] Ward, [email protected]. Rick Matters, [email protected]

The “A” Word!We processed out Alleluia on the last Sunday in Epiphany, and left them tied up in purple cords throughout Lent. Then on Easter Day we processed them into the liturgy. Let everyone now say Alleluia!

CommunitySmall Group Ministriesby Candace DiLello The power of a small group is well known. Most of us belong to one or another of them at All Saints’. The choir is a small group, so are the ushers, The Friends of St. Benedict, the Outreach group and the Wednesday Bible study group and many others. These are small groups of people joined by their mutual passion for a certain subject and the groups are open to new people joining. These kinds of small groups are called Affinity groups and we are all very familiar with the joy and community they bring. There is another kind of small group that is very different from an Affinity group called a Covenant group. Covenant groups are drawn together by a desire to explore one’s own faith journey on a deep and intimate level. They are powerful and transformative spiritual experiences because they are safe places where doubts and questions can be shared without fear. The bonds formed in a Covenant group are strong and enduring. Covenant groups are protected by an agreed upon confidentiality among the members. Because of this, after the initial formative stage, a Covenant group is “closed” to new people. The groups share brief opening prayers and then read, watch or listen to and deeply consider an offering brought by one of the members. During this reflection time we consider the offering through the lens of our own lives and faith and what light it casts on our hearts. The groups end with a special prayer for God’s light and presence in our lives. There is one Covenant group now at All Saints’ that meets on the first and third Friday of the month between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM in the Chapel. We are still in the formative stage so we are open to two or three more people. There is also the possibility of a couples group forming that will meet in the evening. If you are interested in finding out more about the joy and power of Covenant groups, please talk to me, Claudia Ward or Fr. Rick.

Friends of St. Benedictby Bill ReedEach liturgical year we pass through Advent to Christmas to Epiphany to Lent to Easter to Pentecost and their seasons, and then the cycle begins again the next year, and the next year, and the next year, turning and turning and turning. The Church celebrates this cycle to bring us more deeply, year in, year out, into the mystery of Christ. Nevertheless, it is an endless turning and turning, but is there no still point in this turning world?Yes, there is. Easter is the still point, or more to the point, the risen Christ is the still point of the turning world. Christ is not born again each December, and He doesn’t die on the cross again

in March or April (strangely, some priests and preachers talk this way). Many religions do celebrate the annual birth and death of their gods; but this is not Christianity. He was born and died and rose once and for all. Yet Christ is risen still, the Living Christ, who is present in our worship and in our world, transfiguring the cosmos and the church. This is the Living Christ at the center, transfiguring all the peripheries, the LivingChrist Who is the still point of the turning world. Yes, Christ is the still point of the turning world, even to its consummation, even as we pray, now and forever.

All Saints’ is a Learning Communityby Ed FinckeAre you a teacher or a learner? I think each of us is a teacher and a learner, and we form a learning community at All Saints’.We are a community of teachers and learners. We sometimes separate ourselves into teachers and learners, but, each of us needs to be both. We are gifts to one another. Parishioners become teachers and share what they have learned. For example, the parishioners who lead groups such as, Bible study, yoga, St. Benedict, Lenten series, book club, and covenant group, are also learners in other forums. Learning is about doing, not just knowing. Education involves not only teachers and learners, but also all the people who touch our lives during the week. This includes formal and informal settings, such as participation in our five ministries (Worship, Community, Discipleship, Stewardship, and Outreach.) Knowing what is good is the first step; actually doing the good is what is important. “A disciple is more than a student or learner, he/she is a follower.” We learned in this year’s Lenten program to not only follow the Light, but to chase it. Join the learning community. A learning organization is a term coined by management guru Peter Senge, and refers to a company that facilitates the learning of its members. The Discipleship Commission at All Saints’ fosters a learning community to enable learning, teaching and spiritual transformation. The Commission supports the rector, vestry, and all of us by facilitating training and education to enliven the faith and vitality of our congregation. Whether you want to be a teacher or learner, or both, you are invited to participate in our learning community. What do you want to teach? What do you want to learn? Contact members of the vestry or the Discipleship Commission (Ed Fincke) with your ideas and suggestions.

Treasurer’s Report Feb. 28, 2015by Dave McClendonWe ended the month of February with a nice surplus of $2,157.81, bringing our surplus year-to-date to $2,594.07. Before you start doing cartwheels in the Church aisle, March will be a sobering month, but more on that later. For the moment, let us all be thankful and grateful for the solid beginning to our new year, which will indeed be an Adventure in Faith. I am very pleased to be able to report that we are finally on track with a regular monthly Fair Share payment, neither ahead nor behind as we had been since I became Treasurer on Oct. 1, 2014. I am confident that we will be able to maintain this consistency of meeting our obligation as the year progresses. Now onto the aforementioned month of March, which is still in progress as of this writing on March 24, 2015. During the months of March, June, September and December of each year, we experience a spike in our expense profile because of certain quarterly obligations that we pay during each of those months. In December of last year, this spike was admirably dealt with

because of the extraordinary additional support we received at that time from the Church members who stepped up when called upon as we sought and succeeded to close out the year on a strong note. As this extra effort is a precious resource that should not be overused, and while revenue flows for March have been within the bounds of expectation, given that they too can fluctuate, we will end March with a deficit that will likely put us in the red for the first quarter. We were positioned at the start of March with a decent amount of cash in the bank, which has allowed us to weather this little storm of the moment. Furthermore, April is likely to provide opportunities for us to bounce back a little bit as we begin the second quarter. So let’s all keep pulling in the same direction together and we will be just fine. Thank you as always for your ongoing support and dedication. We are all so very blessed to be a part of this Church and this community.

Tapestry on Consignmentby Fr. RickWe are privileged to show the Mark Adams tapestry that is hanging in the baptistery. It is on consignment from Winfield Gallery, on Ocean Avenue. The owner would like to sell it, and we are hoping that someone would purchase it as a gift to All Saints’. Of course, someone could purchase it for personal use. However, we are the home of several Mark Adam pieces, including the larger tapestry, now hanging downstairs in Seccombe Hall, a rose window, now in storage, and the baptistery itself, which is a dynamic work of art.

Outreach Commission Newsby Hans LehmannThe Outreach Commission buys and distributes food, both in daily food bags and Christmas food boxes, serves monthly IHELP dinners, supports the Thomas Karman food pantry in Marina and St. Patrick’s school in Haiti, collects and distributes Christmas gifts, and helps in other ways, such as with the IOC (The Interfaith Outreach of Carmel,) and their benefit shop, Joining Hands. We also make cash donations to other nonprofits, such as our own Rector’s Discretionary Fund and the Epiphany Lutheran Episcopal Church. Most recently, we gathered socks, clothing and blankets for the homeless. We obtain our funds through Small Bites for Big Hunger, the Crafts Faire, and voluntary donations. You will shortly hear more about our plans for this year’s Small Bites fund raiser.Additional information can be obtained through the weekly bulletins, monthly Outreach minutes, quarterly newsletters and annual reports. We try to be transparent and welcome new members. Thank you. Hans Lehmann

Presiding Bishop to Visit Diocese for Spring Pilgrimage and ConferenceMark your calendars for two exciting spring days in May across El Camino Real, highlighted by the presence of Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. On Friday, May 1, join a scenic Pilgrimage through a little-known part of California with the Presiding Bishop and Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves. We’ll gather at 9:30 am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jolon for welcome, prayers and a walk through St. Luke’s historic cemetery. For a map to St. Luke’s, visit here. We’ll be walking and driving in the footsteps of James Shannon McGowan, who founded several missions in the wilds of Central California 100 years ago. The country is quite beautiful and still appears as when McGowan was here: wildflowers, spectacular rock formations and geology, as well as evidence of thousands of years of habitation. We’ll drive through Ft. Hunter Liggett, where our military trains for duty across the world. Along the way, we’ll hear from Presiding

Bishop Katharine and from Bishop Mary about the nature of mission and ministry in a multi-cultural context. Lunch will be provided. At 1:30 pm the group can either disperse, continue hiking in the area or visit nearby attractions such as San Antonio Mission. The next day, Saturday, May 2, the diocese’s annual Spring Conference will take place at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Saratoga; speakers include the Presiding Bishop, Bishop Mary, and others. The theme is “Maturing in Mission: Growing into the Full Stature of Christ.” Attendees can arrive at 9:30 am; the conference begins at 10 am and ends by 3 pm. Cost is $25, which includes lunch. St. Andrew’s is located at 13601 Saratoga Avenue. For both events, reserve your space by emailing Mary Beth Powell at [email protected]. Watch for more information and registration details soon!
